Biggest Loser casting tips (season 14)

Biggest Loser is getting ready to start casting for season 14! Casting calls will be happening this summer and will be posted soon on the Biggest Loser casting website. Basically, this post is a collection of tips I’ve written based on my experience making the cast of season three, as well as some links to casting advice I don’t think you should miss:
- NBC has posted casting information and the application here. They have all the casting news and information on a special blog just for Biggest Loser casting, which you can find here.
- Pete Thomas, the season 2 $100,000 winner has some of the best casting call advice out there, which you can find at his website, Winning Man.
- Holland, a casting director for Biggest Loser sent me a bunch of great advice on how to be casted, you can find it here. She updated them October, 2009.
- I’ve been posting these casting tips for the last few seasons and they always seem to end up with thousands of comments; just about every season has contestants that were hanging out on here, reading and giving each other thoughts and advice. You can find the most recent one here.
- If you’re dealing with disappointment about not being cast, then check out my post on Biggest Loser casting disappointment.
One of the questions I hear a lot is about money … how do contestants afford to be away from home and work for months at a time? I don’t know what it is now, but when I was a contestant there was a $500 a week stipend for cast members on the ranch. When you received the check you could cash it and spend it, send it home, save it, whatever. All airplane tickets, hotel accommodations, etc., for the contestants and potential cast members are taken care of by NBC, and during the casting process it self there was a $50 per diem to cover food costs.
Another question is timing; typically a season lasts for about 8-9 months. About four of this is spent in filming; if you last all the way until the final three or four, you could be away from home for as much as four months or so. Once the ranch filming wraps and the last few contestants are sent home, however, there is still another four or five months that all the contestants have to continue losing weight until the finale. In addition, potential cast members are flown out to California a couple weeks before filming begins for the final round of casting, medical checkups, psychological evals, etc. NBC brings out more people than what they need and the cast is not finalized until filming literally begins. People have been cut at the last minute and replacements flown in with hardly any time to spare. Nothing is in stone until it’s on camera!
When will you hear from Biggest Loser about your video? There is no way of knowing. I heard back a few weeks after I sent it in, but even after that it’s a big waiting game. If you get a phone number or email from a casting direction, definitely drop them a line/call every couple weeks to find out if you’re still in the running or what’s going on. Schedules and plans change almost every day, so it’s easy to get lost in the shuffle. If you don’t hear back within a month I would think your video didn’t make the cut. That doesn’t mean you can’t send in another or visit a casting call – it’s just up to you!
Finally, here’s my video application tips! This is by no means a recipe for success; it’s based on my video application and the conversations I had with casting directors out in LA in between things. I was pretty curious about the whole process so I was pumping them for info even after filming began. I’m such a nerd!
-
They’ve usually decided if they’re interested in you within the first 30-60 seconds of your video, so front load it with your best stuff. Make it interesting! Start off with something funny or exciting!
-
Keep in mind, if you’re going to be cast, your video is going to be watched hundreds of times by producers, executives, casting directors, etc. If it bores you or your friends the second or third time watching it … put some more time into it!
-
Special effects? Don’t bother! We’ve all got video editing software with all sorts of bells and whistles on our home computers, but fancy transitions are not going to sell you to people who do video editing for a living. In fact, it can distract from who you are. I’m a video editing nerd and I didn’t use any special effects other than putting my name and contact info on as a subtitle at the beginning.
-
Don’t bother talking about why you need to lose weight. When I first started filming my audition video I started describing all of my health reasons for losing weight – but when I was watching it back, I realized … they don’t need to hear it! One look at me was all they needed to know I needed to lose weight! Show them why you need to lose it; I said I needed to lose weight for my kids, and then I followed it with a minute or two of the best footage I could find of me with wrestling with my three boys. We probably filmed half an hour of that insanity and I grabbed the cutest, loudest, and funniest few moments for the audition video. Your physical need to lose weight is not nearly as interesting as who or what your losing the weight for.
-
Live loud! Reality TV is over the top, dramatic, and filled with loud personalities. They need to see that on your video! I wanted them to know that even though I was morbidly obese I was up to the challenge of the crazy competitions and workouts – so I threw on a bunch of clips from my different youth group activities; me getting slimed, snowtubing, playing paintball, screaming at events, being on stage, running around … you get the idea. Other contestants did things appropriate to their lives; Tim from Oregon had himself spinning out on his Harley, Tim from Delaware recruited his elementary school class to do things with him, Heather Hanson filmed herself running around in a sports bra all day doing her household chores and errands. The less talking and more action you can have, the better (in my opinion)!
-
If you have footage or photos of yourself thin, include those at some point on the video. If you can show them what your after will be, then do it!
Remember, enjoy the conversation here and know that I will never compromise your anonymity – not to NBC, 3Ball, Casting Directors or anyone. You can post anonymously, or you can leave your names and contact information … just remember that NBC likes to be the one announcing their cast for the show, so if you start identifying yourself publicly as a finalist, you’ll probably find yourself eliminated from the casting process. Be aware that casting directors do check in at my blog to see what people are saying, get a feel for what questions are going on out there, and sometimes to give us updates. Good luck to everyone … and let me know if you make the show! I get a kick out of hearing about the different contestants that have hung out on my blog before making the show! ![]()

I'm Matthew, and you've found my blog! I'm married to Heather, a father of four boys, the Youth Pastor at Brandywine Valley Baptist Church, and former contestant on NBC's Biggest Loser.

Thank you for the reminder, as I had forgotten.
I expect I’ll be there.
S
I hope to…. however, I’m in a diffferent time zone….. and the timing is tough with the responsibilities I have to break free at that time!
Well… of course, they’ll totally have their way with you.
Seriously though, what do you mean by “what do they do”?
I’ve never been there, but I would expect:
1. they’ll meet with you (for some, it will be the 1st time)
2. the doctors will meet with you, so they can perform lots of tests
3. the Producers and execs of BL and NBC will probably meet with you.
4. etc., etc., etc.
Although, there’s alot to accomplish before you would ever be flown out there, if you want to be more clear on your question, maybe an experienced person will respond to you in a bit.
Good Luck
So do we know which people are going to which casting calls yet? I just watched the video chat!
Prayers for our family as we depart to Prince Edward Island for a wedding. Talk to you all next week. Someone on one of the boards mentioned ‘promoting’ or nominating’, can any of you explain since I missed the chat? Thanks. See you all next week!

“Our apologies to everyone that had trouble watching our chat. It normally works fine. It did not record all of the chat, unfortunately. We answered questions for over 30mins so thank you to all those that joined in. Most of your answers can be found on our website at http://www.thebiggestlosercasting.com – See you soon!

Biggest things I took away from it:
1. Use Vimeo NOT YouTube – Bummer! I have all my previous seasons audition videos loaded onto YouTube, so that when they recognize how great I am for the show (from my current season’s video submission) they would quickly and easily be able to access all my past season’s submissions for additional footage.
2. (21:35) – Nominations are for people who are not already applying and you want to nominate them.
3. DON’T have a lot of people write in, nominating or recommending you. If you want to have 1 person write in and actually tell a great reason WHY BL should choose you, then go ahead.
4. (12:00) – finals are August 30th / last week in August. You should start to hear from them by late July (from the 1st cities)
5. (13:45) – Use Vimeo, NOT YouTube
6. EVERYONE’s casting process is different.
7. They prefer us to pre-register

My thoughts and prayers go to you and your family during this exciting trip to PEI. I also pray you have perfect weather for traveling and a most enjoyable time while you are there.
If you are interested, you can still watch the LIVE video chats online, as I posted links to them below (See my post of June 12th 4:20 AM). Also included in my post is some information regarding your question about promoting / nominating applicants.
Be safe and I hope to hear from you soon.
PS. Sorry, I forgot to mention my post below is awaiting moderation, as the casting team put their video chat online (in 5 separate parts).
It says the content is not online. It’s not a PI link fault. What gives?
Well…I do not understand your comment, whereas the 5 links work fine for me (but I imagine I am missing something you’re saying).
I will post BLCasting’s latest comment from their facebook page here.

I think I need. To download the app on my iPad. Speaking of which, I still can’t post from my iPhone
I’m thinking you’re not alone and the fact someone cannot post on their iPhone is probably a great reason why the activity on here is so down this season. I personally don’t own an iPhone, but overall, I do not find the new design of this blog, to really be as user friendly at this point as in seasons past. Anyoine else having trouble with posting on their iPhones?
It’s strange that the first CC is in just 3 days, and yet we can go days with only 1 or 2 people speaking on this blog. That’s normally unheard of, even between seasons (when the blog’s activity really drops off).
Barbara Wulff just posted an interview with Brandon Nickens about what they are looking for for season 14. Good article.
I think a lot of the BL momentum has fizzled because of the delay in casting. I reached out to a few “old BL friends” who didn’t realize they were getting ready to cast again. I have every faith it will pick up! This Saturday is only 1 CC… the next week should get more active!
Check out this interview with casting produce Brandon Nickens about BL 14 -

Thank you for sharing the link. I, for one, really do appreciate it.
That was a good article. I think they listened to the audiences reactions to last season’s naztiness.
I wonder if they will have a hard time deciding on a cast since they are not fitting the typical profiles.
VERY, VERY INTERESTING…
“Q: What are some qualities that make selected contestants stand apart from other applicants for this show?
Brandon Nickens: “We’re looking for people who are willing to be vulnerable…give in to the process. We’re also looking for strong personalities and positive energy – no drama or conflicts. Our team is really serious about making this a ‘feel-good’ show.”
Anyone know which casting directors will be in chicago next week?
I think holland. Someone posted who is where a few pages back.
You guys my computer broke (on a friend’s computer right now) so I won’t be online for a few days. Sorry for not checking in. I’ll catch up on everything when it’s fixed
. Talk to you all soon!
Thanks anon- I finally found it
Anyone going to the CC in LA this weekend? If so good luck to you.
The blog is back online! Sorry for the disappearing act … WordPress announced an upgrade, I did it … and killed the blog. Finally got it working again after spending a bunch of (wasted) time on the phone with GoDaddy and then finally picking through files and code one at a time on my server.
In other news … I was also able to tweak some css code and fix the issue with commenting from an iPhone and other portable devices, so that works now as well.
I had been hounding the designer for a fix on that but hadn’t gotten anything helpful back, so I tried experimenting with some stuff and it worked.
Good thing today was my day off! lol
Thanks Matt. I was going crazy, as I imagine many were, without your blog tonight. In case you’re not aware of it, the “quote” feature has not been working this evening and still remains a problem.
I hope you realize we appreciate everything you do for us.
Have a great weekend.
Thanks Matt, I’m sooo happy you are back!!
I didn’t realize the quote button wasn’t working … I’ll look into it. Thanks for the heads up.
Testing from iphone
Thanks Matt for fixing this issue! My typing thumbs feel all happy now!

I’ve been sitting on this response since yesterday, whereas the “quote” button wasn’t working and I wanted this to be more current than the “reply” button would allow it (for you to be sure to see when you have the ability to get back online). I know you’ll be going a ways back, to get caught up, to stuff that’s been forgotten about.
I realize you are certainly NOT new to this blog, but just to be sure you’re comments are seen, I thought I’d share the following… If you are replying to someone, I don’t recommend you go back a few pages and click “reply” to respond to them, or about their post. Most likely all will be for not, as I cannot imagine many people actually go back on a regular basis to see if their comments have had any replies (from us or newbies, who do not know any better). Newbies could be waiting for answers, never for them to come.
My recommendation was for you to click on “quote” instead and then your post would land on the current page of the day.
Unfortunately, now the “quote” button is gone altogether, so I, myself, am back to copying and pasting. I’m sure, you being such a smart boy; you will be able to figure out how to make sure you are seen.
I’m going to try and find a working option for the quote function. A lot of plugins are incompatible with the newest version of WordPress – they’ve been updating them like crazy, so I turned that one off until it gets updated. I’ve also been trying to find a way to get rid of the ‘reply’ button altogether. There don’t seem to be any plugins that do it, and the designer said he’d get back to me if he could come up with something.
I’m not getting into having to “Fill in your details below”. So, apparently we must register each and every time we make a comment. It slows down the process and takes more time when you’re responding to multiple previous comments. Previous to last night’s maintenance, the computer automatically saved the “Email” and “Name” for the next time one would comment.

YEH! Get rid of the reply button, pleeeaaaaassse!
I really shouldn’t say “hate, but as you can probably tell, I HATE that button. If I had to choose one, I’d so rather have the “quote” button. It’s so much more useful.
I seem to recall when you first started playing with your blog’s design, there was a point when you actually removed the “reply” button and at one point, I think both the “reply’ and “quote” buttons were both removed.
Is there any possibility of bringing back the page numbers? Again, it’s another feature that makes it a lot quicker to maneuver through the pages (when you’re in search of something from the past).
Thanks again for everything.
YAY! I don’t have to write my Name and Address again.
So, who’s going to the LA casting call tomorrow?
Anyone from here…
Good luck to anyone going to the CC tomorrow!
Let the fun begin!!!
GOOD LUCK TO EVERYONE AT THE LA CC…

Are we to assume, not one of us is going to the LA casting call today?
If there is someone who is not admitting to it, but will be attending today, I will be thinking of you and praying for the best.
Keep the positive thoughts running.
To all going to CC in La today I pray God will be with you. Don’t get too hot. Bring water!
Matthew, I don’t know if this is happening to anyone else, but when I hit the link on the side of the page for most recent comments it takes me back to June 4.
Ok friends. Magic scale update time. Magic scale says I am down a total of 16.6. I was 11 something last week.
I did not get much exercise in. My pool was closed for a week. It reopened today so I will be sure to get my swim in before hubby awakes tomorrow.
Happy Father’s Day weekend to all the great dads on this board!
I’m only down 1 more lb. Slow going.
Anonymous, I can’t believe another 16 lbs! Congratulations
!
Nanny, 1 lb is better than 0 lbs
. You’ll get there when you get there, but for now, enjoy the ride
!
PI, thank you for calling me smart c: (<– I just discovered that cute little face. He's very smiley XD)!
(Back on the internet by the way
. I’ll be with you guys again!)
Hi guys,
Just checking back in to see what’s going on.
As I think I said befire, this will be my first time applying or attending a casting call (of any type). For the BL CC in Atlanta, how many people generally show up? If I get there at 7am, will there be a ton of people there already?
Honestly, I have no idea what to expect, other than what I’ve seen on tv for American Idol, and hopefully there won’t be that many people!
Nooooo I am down 16.6 total, not just this week.

As far as what I’ve heard from the CD’s, there’s never been anywhere near American Idol’s turnout, at any BL CC anytime. Thank God!
I’ve not been to an Atlanta CC before, so I can not comment on their previous turnouts.
Good luck to you.
@Anonymous
Oh sorry.. Whoops XD.
I’m sorry too! 16 pounds in a week woulda been fabulous!!!
XD. Maybe it’ll happen someday
