How do you diet when sick?

This comes up every once and a while, but a lot in the last week between people I know online and in my weight loss group, so I thought I’d jot down some of what I’ve been saying … what do you do when you’re sick and you’re trying to lose weight?

To be honest, a few years ago I always stopped eating when I was sick.  I took advantage of the loss of appetite to try and lose a few pounds, but that was pretty unhealthy.  If you are counting calories, in theory you are already eating less calories than your body would consume at rest for the day.  In other words, if you did nothing whatsoever and just laid around all day, but were on a low calorie diet, you would still lose weight.  Adding exercise to the mix makes you healthier and causes you to lose weight more quickly.

But here’s the thing; when you’re sick, your body is actually burning a lot more calories than normal fighting the sickness.  That’s why we feel tired, drained, feverish, whatever.  There is a lot of stuff happening under our skin, so even if you’re missing your workouts, your body is still burning calories at an elevated rate.  Which is why continuing to eat your number of calories is essential.  Your body NEEDS that fuel to continue its fight against whatever is ailing you.  If your queasy, change what you’re eating to something you can stomach, but still eat on your regular schedule and get the food you need.  You will get well sooner and feel better throughout.

And do NOT weigh yourself while you’re sick.  The scale jumps around, but it’s not because you are putting on fat.  It’s water weight.  Your body retains extra water as part of the healing process – especially if you’re not drinking enough!  Weird but true!  A few days after you’re better you should see the scale settle back down.  So keep eating, drink plenty and wait it out.  Being healthy in how you deal with being sick is just as important as how you eat and exercise when you’re well!

Random gaming thoughts

Okay, I don’t have any one thought worth a whole post, but it’s snowing and I’m bored so I’m going to throw a few jumbled half-thoughts together.

I’ve played Metroid Prime 3: Corruption for all of twenty minutes.  I’m stuck.  Seriously.  I guess I didn’t realize this was a puzzle solving first person shooter.  Odd combo if you ask me.  So, I spent some time online, found a guide that tells me all the answers so I can get to the shooting.  Now I just need some time for some gaming …

I just spent $17 on Ebay buying ten controller extension cables for Gamecube controllers.  Sheesh!  I’m planning a Smash Party for when the new Smash Bros. game comes out in a few weeks for the Wii.  There are a ton of middle school kids in this town dying to try out the game that don’t have Wii’s, so we’re going to use the projector at church and make a party of it.  Because it will also accept Gamecube controllers, that’s the way we’re going to go – cheaper!  And actually better for this game any way … but they won’t reach the Wii if it’s connected to the projector.  But with the extension cables doubled up, we’ll have no problem.  I’m also going to set up a couple Gamecubes and XBoxes as well, so it should be a fun afternoon.

Downloaded Super Street Fighter II on the Virtual Console for the Wii a few weeks ago.  Man, that brought back some memories!  I totally dominated the first half of the combatants, but the second half … whoa.  I am stuck.  Oh well.

And apparently I haven’t turned on my XBox in two or three weeks.  Wow.  It has a blog (yeah, video game systems can do everything now), and it’s been whining about how I have been ignoring it forever.  I’ll leave you with yesterday’s blog entry:

A bunch of us Xboxes held a candlelight vigil last night called ‘Bring Back the Gaming’ to protest the blatant ignoring of Xbox 360s everywhere. We had lots of consoles participate… It was a good time… I made some friends…

100 inches of snow.

Well, it’s snowing.  Again.

This winter has been CRAZY!  Or maybe it’s a sign … that God wants me to move to Florida …

Anyway, so far we’ve gotton a few inches of the 7-12 inches we are supposed to have by tonight.  Add that to previous snowfalls, and we are now safely over 100 inches of snow this winter … and it’s not done yet.  That’s over eight feet of snow!  Rediculous!

Granted, it looks pretty while it’s falling … but still, a light dusting would have had the same level of eye appeal, and without all the back breaking shoveling!

Skit Guys = Hilarious

I stumbled across this last night and it brought back some sweet memories of laughing until my face hurt!  I was actually at this performance; in the front row, way over to the left (can’t see me).  It was at Youth Specialties’ youth worker conference in Texas a couple years ago, so this particular sketch is aimed right at youth workers – but it’s still funny!  I absolutely love these guys; you can check out their website here.  The Skit Guys have a great ministry and have put together some of the best ministry related drama resources out there.  I’ve used their skit videos as illustrations in youth group, retreats and even Sunday morning worship services with the whole church!  It’s not often you get a couple guys that can appeal to every generation!

Breakfast is key!

I had always heard for years that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, but I guess I never really understood why.  Over the last couple years, though, I think I finally get it: it’s all about managing my appetite.  Back in the day, I wouldn’t eat until one or two in the afternoon (a common trait amongst those overweight), which is usually when I started feeling hungry.  However, because I was starving at that point, my portions would be absolutely out of control.  Eating a healthy size breakfast before you’re ravenous helps to control cravings and appetite; by having a steady flow of appropriate sized portions of food throughout the day, the impulse to binge is greatly lowered.

I typically eat around 500 calories for breakfast, which lately has been in the form of oatmeal (I tend to rotate between a few of my favorite cereals and egg beater omelets).  I really like to have a high fiber breakfast for a couple reasons; most Americans don’t actually get enough fiber in their typical day, so partially it’s for a healthy balance in my eating.  My body needs it!  The second reason, though, is more of an eating strategy.  In comparison to other foods, dietary fiber takes a looooong time for the body to break it down and digest.  What does this mean practically?  I’m going to feel full a lot longer and it will be that much easier to control my cravings through the day.  There is no need to spend the day hungry – it’s all about eating healthy and with intentionality.

Want some of my high fiber breakfast favorites?  Quaker’s weight control oatmeal is called that because it has more fiber than Quaker’s regular oatmeal (there’s no real difference in calories).  It’s decent, but my favorite is the Kashi brand oatmeals and hot cereals.  You can taste the difference in quality and they’re only slightly more expensive.  For cereals, I like Kashi brand and Fiber One brand cereals.  I usually have a few in the house at any given time and bounce around the different flavors.  I even keep a box of the Caramel granola bars from Fiber One in my car in case I need a quick, high fiber snack during the day.  Good stuff!

Biggest Loser Couples: Mark goes out a hero

I enjoyed last night’s episode of The Biggest Loser.  It was a pivotal weigh in, and it showed in the trainers: the stakes?  A season five sweep of the finale.  Season four was the first year only one trainer had contestants represented in the final four, and last night answered the question of whether or not the same would be true for this season’s blue team (not to be a pessimist, but I would find it highly unlikely that black team has a shot at this this year).  Not to be doubtful of a reality show’s intentions, but I do think it’s somewhat suspect that blue team’s “reward” was a boys trip to Vegas with no trainer.  Bob had a right to be upset about it … if nothing else, the changes in air pressure when traveling on an airplane can cause the body to retain a couple extra pounds of water weight.

When it was all said and done, blue lost the weigh in and Mark took the hit for it.  His willingness to be voted off spoke a lot for him.  He bit the bullet for the sake of the team and really put the team ahead of himself and his brother.  Think about it; even if Dan and Roger voted the same, and Mark and Jay both voted against Roger … if it went to a tie there was no way the black team was going to vote off anyone other than Roger.  So all Mark had to do was hold out for an hour and Roger would be gone, which in all honesty, would have pretty much guaranteed that at least one of, if not both, Mark and Jay would have made the final four.  And with Roger out of the picture, there would be a good chance one of them would get the $$$.  So at the end of the day, I was pretty impressed with Mark’s selflessness and his focus on the weight loss, not the game.  It was better for Roger to be at the Ranch than him, so he did it.  A lot of garbage has been said about Mark online over the last couple months, and it’s not entirely fair.  His portrayal on the show hasn’t been what he had hoped, but I guess that’s to be expected.  JD Roth, the executive producer for the show was pretty upfront about it with us before our season began filming; he told us they don’t create fiction for the show (riiiight), they just exagerate truth.  So good stuff looks great and bad stuff looks horrible.  Makes for great TV, but it’s left a trail of broken people from over the years from all the different reality shows that have destroyed someone’s image for the sake of ratings.

But enough already!  I gotta say, that farewell was pretty emotional!  I actually teared up during it, which is pretty unusual for me when watching a reality show!  The only time it’s really happened in the past is during season three, and that’s only because it was my friends on the screen!  Powerful stuff!

Jillian Michaels’ (of Biggest Loser) latest podcast (Feb. 24)

Jillian’s latest podcast is online and ready to download.  It’s her weekly call in talkshow from KFI AM 640, a California radio station.  You all know and love her as the trainer for the black team on Biggest Loser (originally the Red Team trainer until she disappeared for season three and was replaced by Kim Lyons, my personal favorite of the three Biggest Loser trainers).  Anyway, I’m still playing catch up from snow camp (Sheesh … I keep falling back on that same excuse, don’t I?) so I haven’t actually listened to it yet, but according to the radio station’s web page, she covers the following subjects in this edition: the LA marathon, triathalon training, how much water to drink, dealing with loose skin, home gyms, a teen dealing with weight, and some other stuff.  I’m looking forward to hearing it all during my morning workout!  To download it, right click the link below and select “save target as” to save it to your computer!

Metroid Prime 3: Corruption

I came home from snow camp to discover my copy of Metroid Prime 3: Corruption in the mail box!  I haven’t really had a chance to play it yet, but I am excited.  It’s my pay off for using the website, www.Playswitch.com.  It’s a site where you list the games you have that you want to trade and list the games that you want, and it connects you with people!  It’s great!  I traded off a couple of my old XBox games that have been collecting dust for the last year or two which gave me enough “switch bucks” to get this gem for my Nintendo Wii!  I’m excited because there was no way I was going to drop fifty bucks on it, but now it almost feels like I got it for free!  And even though it’s used, the guy wasn’t kidding when he said it was in like new condition!

So now I’m a believer … I was thinking about dropping off the site once I got a game out of it, but it really is a great system!  Now if I could just trade for Super Mario Galaxy …

Superbowl Party will be back!

This year was the first year in a looooong time that I haven’t thrown a Superbowl party.  It was kind of nice in a way … a quiet afternoon at home … but sad, too.  And disappointing for dozens of teens!  We’ve had the reputation for having the biggest party in the area; tons of give aways (last year we even gave away an Ipod), piles of food, usually around 7-10 video game systems set up, ping pong, foozball, crazy games like our annual hot dog eating contest and more.  Well, all that was shut down this last year because the NFL had been cracking down on churches who have Superbowl parties!  I’ve never charged a penny – I factor the events costs into my youth budget and get a ton of donations from church people, but even in those situations the NFL was saying no deal.  Basically, it boils down to ratings; the NFL wants everyone watching it from their homes and they said gatherings of more than 15 violates copyright or something like that.  Last year they even sent some threatening letters to some churches about their parties being illegal.  With all the hoopla, we made the decision to cancel ours this year.  The bizarre thing is, sports bars were still allowed to have public screenings, but churches couldn’t!  Go figure!

Well, it looks like all the stink raised last year because of churches getting those letters has paid off! In an article on WashingtonPost.com (you can find it here), it’s being reported that the NFL has reversed its earlier stance and now says churches can have Superbowl parties as long as they’re not charging admission!  Woo-hoo!  The party is back on!  Um, next year, that is …

All that to say, I’m really happy about their decision.  Every year we’ve had teens who have passed up unsupervised, drinking parties to come to our clean church party.  To me, that’s just awesome.  We’ve also always seen kids start coming to our other events and even youth group because of our party – it’s purely a “get them through the door” type event with no preaching and lots of party … with a five minute commercial part way through for our snow camps and other meetings.  And I can’t think of a single year where we haven’t seen growth in our other programs specifically because of the Superbowl party.
