Rocky Balboa is the man! In somewhat related news, this last weekend we had our annual mission trip to Philadelphia! About forty of us spent four days and three nights working in homeless shelters, local churches, street ministries, and more. It was definitely an eye opening experience for all of us, not just the kids. And it was powerful to hear the stories coming from these teens from their interactions with different homeless people they met on the streets and in the subways.
It was a bit of a challenging weekend as a leader; for a while their my morale took a bit of a hit. In the space of a night we had to send a kid home who was really sick, I took an call about a crisis back at the church, a leader’s grandfather died and he had to leave, other students started throwing up … you get the picture. The biggest one, however, was my wife! Poor Heather fell and ended up seriously hurting her right foot, so I had to rush home late Saturday night to take her to the emergency room. She ended up massively spraining her foot, pulling some of the tendon from the bone, and basically wrecking her mobility for the next month or so. She’ll be on crutches for at least a few weeks or more, and she’s all bandaged up with a splint. Ug. Do I need to mention that we have four mobile boys tearing around? Yikes. My in-laws were away for the weekend for a wedding, but they cut their trip short and came back which enabled me to finish out the MAD Man trip (Make A Difference is the acronym, if you’re wondering).
All in all, it was a really great experience in spite of the setbacks and challenges. We were working with CSM, a great organization that I would definitely recommend!
