I am legend (movie review)

So maybe I’m way behind the times, but I finally saw “I am legend.”  It took me a couple days – I watched it while exercising.  : )  I really enjoyed it – which isn’t surprising since I’m kind of a sci-fi geek and a Will Smith fan.  So while I didn’t think it was spectacular or anything like that, it kept me entertained and involved.

SPOILER ALERT!

Here’s where I was frustrated – I felt like they missed out on a lot of opportunities to make it a deeper, better film.  For example, the Dark Seekers.  The writers hinted that they were following a leader, getting smarter, changing their behavior – but they only hinted at it instead of really having fun with it.  I was excited that it seemed like something was building that didn’t end up happening.

The appearance of the woman and the child almost seemed too far fetched to me.  I honestly thought Smith’s character snapped after his dog died and he was imagining them.  It just seemed to convenient, and yes, they tried to explain it as God working … but it felt more like an easy explanation than something they actually believed (which would have been cool).

Maybe I just wasn’t happy about Smith dying in the end seconds after realizing he had discovered a cure, or the neat and tidy ending of finding the human sanctuary.  I guess it would have been more powerful to discover the cure only to see it lost because the Dark Seekers were destroying everything.  I’m not sure what I’m trying to say, only that the ending seemed to simple and neat for a movie that could have gone deeper.

All that being said, I really enjoyed it and that’s just nitpicks from a sci-fi nerd wishing for a little more.

  1. funny story! I took my middle schoolers to Stuck in the Middle and on the last night we watched I Am Legend in the hotel…and I got too scared so we switched it! I had no idea it was a horror/sci fi movie! my kids are still giving me crap about that! I stopped it after he does the tests on the chick who dies.

I couldn't handle not finishing it though, so I rented it a week later and watched it again…with all the lights on in my house. I'm such a wuss!

I liked the whole "There is no God!" fight and her commitment that God spoke to her which eventually leads her to safety.

Lots of stuff in the movie was weak…like him getting rescued after his car got turned over. I did love him hanging and almost getting killed. That was pretty suspenseful.

  2. That IS funny! You big chicken! : ) It did make me jump a few times, but I didn't really think of it as horror … more of a scarier sci-fi …

And yeah, the getting rescued at that timing just seemed too convenient. That's why I thought he was going crazy and imagining it all. I loved that the Dark Seekers set a trap for him and had him hanging there, that had me so tense!

  3. Hi I liked the movie though would have really preferred the original ending where in like in the Richard Matheson book Neville never died making him the only human survivor and thus Legend. If you want to see the original ending of the movie then you can visit my blog at htttp://likeiknowit.wordpress.com and check the review section. Actually according to the book he was the last man surviving who would capture the creatures to conduct the freaky tests in vain to cure them. In the end he simply returns the captured Alice Braga and survives to be a true Legend.

  4. Now you have me curious; I'm going to have to grab a copy and read it! Thanks!
