Updated Biggest Loser casting tips (season 7)

Hey everyone!  I’ve locked this thread – too many comments!  It was taking forever to load!  To find the casting tips for season eight blog entry, just follow this link: Biggest Loser casting tips (season eight)!

I’ve been meaning to do this for a while now … but only now got around to it!  Biggest Loser is casting for season seven – my guess is that they will begin filming at the end of summer or the beginning of fall.  To get the application and more information from NBC, click here.  To find my original casting tips post which contains the video application advice you’ll see below as well as over a thousand comments worth of discussion, click here.  I’ve added my answers to a couple questions that seem to come up a lot, as well as my tips for a casting video; I was cast on season three because of my video – I’ve never actually been to a casting call.  And if you’re dealing with disappointment about not being cast, then check out my post on Biggest Loser casting disappointment.

One of the questions I hear a lot is about money … how do contestants afford to be away from home and work for months at a time?  I don’t know what it is now, but when I was a contestant there was a $500 a week stipend for cast members on the ranch.  When you received the check you could cash it and spend it, send it home, save it, whatever.  All airplane tickets, hotel accomdations, etc., for the contestants and potential cast members are taken care of by NBC, and during the casting process it self there was a $50 per diem to cover food costs.

Another question is timing; typically a season lasts for about 8-9 months.  About four of this is spent in filming; if you last all the way until the final three or four, you could be away from home for as much as four months or so.  Once the ranch filming wraps and the last few contestants are sent home, however, there is still another four or five months that all the contestants have to continue losing weight until the finale.  In addition, potential cast members are flown out to California a couple weeks before filming begins for the final round of casting, medical checkups, physchological evals, etc.  NBC brings out more people than what they need and the cast is not finalized until filming literally begins.  People have been cut at the last minute and replacements flown in with hardly any time to spare.  Nothing is in stone until it’s on camera!

When will you hear from Biggest Loser about your video?  There is no way of knowing.  I heard back a few weeks after I sent it in, but even after that it’s a big waiting game.  If you get a phone number or email from a casting direction, definitely drop them a line/call every couple weeks to find out if you’re still in the running or what’s going on.  Schedules and plans change almost every day, so it’s easy to get lost in the shuffle.  If you don’t hear back within a month I would think your video didn’t make the cut.  That doesn’t mean you can’t send in another or visit a casting call – it’s just up to you!

Finally, here’s my video application tips!  This is by no means a recipe for success; it’s based on my video application and the conversations I had with casting directors out in LA in between things.  I was pretty curious about the whole process so I was pumping them for info even after filming began.  I’m such a nerd!

  • They’ve usually decided if they’re interested in you within the first 30-60 seconds of your video, so frontload it with your best stuff.  Make it interesting!  Start off with something funny or exciting!
  • Keep in mind, if you’re going to be cast, your video is going to be watched hundreds of times by producers, executives, casting directors, etc.  If it bores you or your friends the second or third time watching it … put some more time into it!
  • Special effects?  Don’t bother!  We’ve all got video editting software with all sorts of bells and whistles on our home computers, but fancy transitions are not going to sell you to people who do video editting for a living.  In fact, it can distract from who you are.  I’m a video editting nerd and I didn’t use any special effects other than putting my name and contact info on as a subtitle at the beginning.
  • Don’t bother talking about why you need to lose weight.  When I first started filming my audition video I started descibing all of my health reasons for losing weight – but when I was watching it back, I realized … they don’t need to hear it!  One look at me was all they needed to know I needed to lose weight!  Show them why you need to lose it; I said I needed to lose weight for my kids, and then I followed it with a minute or two of the best footage I could find of me with wrestling with my three boys.  We probably filmed half an hour of that insanity and I grabbed the cutest, loudest, and funniest few moments for the audition video.  Your physical need to lose weight is not nearly as interesting as who or what your losing the weight for.
  • Live loud!  Reality TV is over the top, dramatic, and filled with loud personalities.  They need to see that on your video!  I wanted them to know that even though  I was morbidly obese I was up to the challenge of the crazy competitions and workouts – so I threw on a bunch of clips from my different youth group activities; me getting slimed, snowtubing, playing paintball, screaming at events, being on stage, running around … you get the idea.  Other contestants did things appropriate to their lives; Tim from Oregon had himself spinning out on his Harley, Tim from Deleware recruited his elementary school class to do things with him, Heather Hanson filmed herself running around in a sports bra all day doing her household chores and errands.  The less talking and more action you can have, the better (in my opinion)!
  • If you have footage or photos of yourself thin, include those at some point on the video.  If you can show them what your after will be, then do it!

There’s probably other things to say, but that’s all I can think of at the moment!  If you have other questions, post ‘em here and I’ll add it to the list!  Good luck!

*** EDIT ***

Pete Thomas, season 2 $100,000 champion and currently a big asset in the casting process left a comment in the discussion below (to read the full comment, click here).  Here are few timeless highlights from his comment:

While I could give you tons of additional tips I will give you the BIG ones. They are really the only 3 that matter for the Open Call and Call Back.

#1 Your Look – Come looking beautiful or handsome. Men (and women) come shaven and looking neat, clean and beautiful. If you’re a slob this is the wrong show for you. You may be fat but you should still have a level of self confidence and respect that shows through in how you carry yourself. No need to dress for a wedding but Erik from Season 3 bought new clothes. See my site for his interview.

# 2 Your Team – Think about this. Who has a stronger team ’story’ – Two Fat Camp Counselors or two third Cousins? Get it? How you ‘relate’ to your teammate makes a big difference since this is part of your story. If you’re an individual all hope is not lost as they may have some twist that gets you on the show (think Bernie and Brittany from Season 4).

#3 Your Job – Assassins need not apply. Interesting or regular jobs only please.

Extra A – Have A LOT to lose. Men with ‘only’ 100 lbs to lose are borderline at best this year. Women with 70 lbs to lose are borderline. 700 pounders are also a no go. You have to be able to exercise. But I have a feeling one day that may be a twist or special feature they will add to inspire those who are that size.

Extra B – Type A’s get cast on the show. And the A’s of the Type A’s (See Bullets #5 from Matt’s video blog above – Live Loud)

There are even more tips I could give that have to do with interpersonal stuff which is where I see people mess up but remember what Matt said – Live Loud (not obnoxious, but Loud -)

Pete

Talk to you soon and remember, There’s a Winner Wi ‘thin’ You!

  1. My partner and I have made it pretty far in the casting process and had VERY recent contact with our CD. We were told that we are still in the running and we have not received medical papers so I agree that there is NO WAY they have sent medical papers out.

There are a lot of people on this board that have made it far. Has anyone else received paperwork? I just find it hard to believe.

  2. Yikes

When is the last time you have been in contact with anyone regarding casting? What is the last information you have received?

    Yikes,
You have to do what feels right to you. Whatever anyone says here may not be the right thing you want to hear. But I honestly think just because your CD is out, doesn't mean you're out. Like Matt said your contact was your CD, but a bunch of people have seen each of us and if they are interested iat this point they will contact you. So try and relax. If it's meant to be it will.

I've just been sitting here since my last post going on 50 mn ago and just want to say AGHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!! My nerves have just about had it here. Sorry YIKES! I can be rationale for others, but going stir crazy myself. Need to take my own advice and Relax! 🙂

    NO MORE WAITING…

I got medical paperwork too!!!!!!!! Yee Ha!!!!!

  6. Seriously doubt anyone received medical paperwork. I received a unicorn!!!!

  7. If it were a regular who posted on this site, I would probably believe they received medical paperwork. Its just someone who wants everyone to start freaking out.

  8. Loser-

    LOL!!! Seriously!

  9. Glen CoCo: What movie did your screen name come from? Just curious…..Passing time…………

  10. I'll let y'all know if I receive any info. Its not like anyone here knows who I am or could even figure me out for that matter. I hope whoever gets on drops a hint on air. Course we'd know anyway since you wouldn't post anything for a loooooooong time……

  11. NewBLFan-
My name is from the movie Mean Girls. There is a scene where santa is passing out candy canes to a high school class and santa says "Two for you Glenn CoCo. You go Glen CoCo!" It seriously is a hysterical movie, I recommend it to everyone to pass the time!

  12. Good Morning Everyone I have been reading Matt's site for quite some time now. I chose not to post because I do not want to ruin my chances of getting on the show. Just wanted to give a little information. I myself have been through the casting process quite a few times. I have someone I know that made it to the ranch for Season 6 as a husband and wife team. They were never called or asked for additional information from their CD after they had their one on one interview. No background check, no medical papers, etc…… They were called at the last minute to go to CA for Season 6. So, evidently EVERY case is different. I have made it far in the casting process each time and it is a hard road to travel. They will get your hopes up and make you think you have a for sure place as a finalist and then that is it! It is never over until it is over. I myself am in the same shoes you are in and waiting and holding my breath. I just hope one of us does actually make it and then like someone said on here it would make for an awesome alliance!

  13. Those of you with medical papers… you're just going to drop that in there with no more details? Was it a physical form? Did you get a deadline to return the papers? Did the email say why you were getting them? I'm sure most of us would rather you not post anything than something obscure and then just disappear. I'm excited for you, I really am. But it's hard to be excited for you when I feel like someone's being a little kid on the playground taunting me with something that I want but don't have.

  14. Let's try to stick to the facts…has anyone received word that Finalists will be notified tomorrow?

  15. Yes I have received word that we will be notified by tomorrow if we are picked to go to CA.

  16. Good point whooo hooo… I had a minor moment of frustration. Back to my calm self now. 🙂 BTW… I have not received word that finalists will be notified tomorrow… other than Matt's post a while back about "the end of the month."

  17. Just one more day guys and gals! No matter what it has been a great experience I remember 2 weeks ago when my cd had called me I was flabbergasted!! and though the wait is torturous I still am glad I had shoulders to lean on this blog really helped me through the anticipation.

  18. Thank you for confirming heatherbl2008! That is what I heard as well! Finalists will be notified by Friday 8/29/08. Just think..the original date was 8/15/08 two weeks from tomorrow. The longest two weeks ever! I am just nervous that they are going to push the date back again if they are still asking for more info from people.

  19. Yes I to have received word that we will be notified by tomorrow if we are picked to go to CA.

    The wait is killing me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

call back we were told Monday Aug. 18 would be the day they would be doing call backs for a Sept 5th meeting in L.A. This is the only firm date we have obtained. Based on what i was told we are out of the running as we did not geta call on the 18th. Understanding the process and how things get pushed back ue to all sorts of situation, it is not over till I see an official notice or the next season is in casting, then it just restarts. We willbe much more prepaired forthe next casting.

So… I will take everyones lead and go with tomorrow is D-Day. Till we hear on Monay it had been pushed another 2 weeks. Then another 2 weeks.

    Party on!

  21. That is awesome that we have some consistent information here! It gives me hope that tomorrow really is the day!

Just think 11-12 days after tomorrow you could be boarding a plane to LA!!! If that is the case, I bet the next two weeks will go a lot faster than the last two weeks!

  22. I love you man…. hehe

Patiance is a virtue and that I dont have…

PLEASE PLEAS TELL ME KNOW…. Woot Woot…

Going to the ranch… Camping out .. Let me in.. .Gotta lose weight… Must climb hill… Be demanded by Jillian to do more.. More More more moremoremoremoremore… must have more.. I am going nutz here.. Woot Woot..

    God Bless you all

They can't push it back too much. Bob's myspace says filming will start at the end of the month. They need a weeks to get everyone there and probably two weeks for medical/psych testing and photo shoots for promotional stills.

  24. I hope the plane is large enough !!!

If they book on southwest the will be paying for a lot of second seats! The crappy thing if they fly us out it will be on a regional jet, now those are small. Was on one tueday night flying home from Vegas. Luckly the filighwas only half full or some poor SOB would have had half of me in his lap. I gusee sense we are only 4 hour drive it will be a road trip for us.

Let the god times roll! Then watch the rolls go away!

  26. If tomorrow is supposedly the day… I am confused as to why I was contacted 2 days ago asking me to send in more video footage so that they would have it no later than Sept. 2nd?!

What the heck is THAT all about??

  27. My friends were told from their casting director that he wont know anything till friday. So that's another confirmation of a friday date being "d-day". Also, they never filled any paperwork (background check) and are pretty far in the process and were told (after they asked) that they can do all the paperwork in LA. They have not recieved any medical paperwork either. Again, it's different for everyone.

Good luck and I hope to be watching some of you next season. I think a secret code of tugging your ear or scratching your nose (like a baseball coach) during the voting is a cool idea to send all of us the signal that you once posted here. 🙂

  28. I was on my space and ran into a bulletin written by Brittany yesterday 8/27/08 it read this:

  29. Hey everyone 🙂 Well, I suppose it's a good sign that it's the day before D-Day and the date hasn't been moved as of yet. My partner is going NUTS with not hearing anything and I'm getting discouraged but if NO ONE has been notified then our chances are still pretty good. I will for SURE put something up here if we are selected, I wouldn't want to keep my hopes up if people were already notified and no one knew about it.

Thank you to whoever it was that brought up the medical information not being asked for until they got there because i was beginning to think that if you weren't asked for it, you weren't going but other contestants on the show weren't asked for it prior either.

I wish everyone the best of luck and REALLY hope they do notifications tomorrow to put us all out of our misery.

As far as the plane goes….. Oh lord!!! HAHAHAHA

I just want to add something to the mix. Some relate they are further along then others… Well those on the next step would most likely signed some type of cofidentiality agreement. Posting where they are in the process would be a violation of that agreement. If they only have say 25 groups picked it would ot be to hard to gure outwho is in violation. I also know anygood IT guy to figure out who each of us arin a heatbeat, right partner!

I love the posts, I love how everyone is fired up and jumping everytime the phone rings.

I just wish those who are messing with us would stop, but then again, it is keeping everyone on the edge of their seats.

My partner has convinced me to stop looking at the odds and have faith. I look at it if it is to be it will be, I beleive in fate! Either way, I'll beat you to the top of the hill! And yes, I want Jillian as my trainer!

    Carry on!

  32. Cue George Michael… Good word, pick me, good word.

  33. They did a story about that this morning on the Today Show! Unreal!

  34. Waiting –

I found the same bulletin posted by BN (a casting director) two days ago.

So… if they are still posting these… AND requesting more video footage from people… how in the heck could tomorrow be the day to get called?!

  35. Can you guys please post that link

  36. If tommorrow is D-Day than i think we should come up with some sort of sign that we can give if anyone of us gets on the ranch!!

  37. I have Brittany as my friend on my myspace if I give you the link you won't be able to see it without having my sign in name and password

  38. Faith.. Love .. and Happiness…….

Faith in God that you know he is doing what is best for you

Love your friends and family that they support what you do..

Happiness…… BEING ON THE RANCH GETTING BEAT DOWN IN EXCERSICE BY JILLIAN….

I just wanna be happy….. **SNiff Sniff**

    Woot Woot..

    God Bless You all ….

  39. Hello/// All I guess i am going to make this 1 BIG drive by..

    I am a male ( hense the word Daddy…)

The1st person i would tell would be my wife/family/church/

My Boss knows all about it( So does the owner) I am commissioned 100 % so i would even continue being paid while i am gone. How about that blessing. My accounts all know and are more than supportive to stay with me while i am gone hense me still getting paid.

If i was gone to cali and then sent home. No biggie i would pick up where i left off and comeup with my own regimen.

I am no longer worried about the D Date like several of you have said. It is going to take alot a patience and faith.
If it is suppose to happen it will happen.

  40. adding to my last post if anyone decides to make a sign we should also decide where to do it at. For example at the first weigh in or first elimination.

  41. Hey guys!…. Just went to BN's myspace and a comment made to him by a friend this morning at 11:30 this morning said

"Good luck on your pitch… you have always been a good pitcher… get it? lol"

SO… guess what that means boys and girls…. TODAY we are being pitched 😉

  42. i didnt mean brittany i meant bn

  43. if it is today then how would we hear back tomorrow seems to soon. FYI – Can someone please post the link to bn

  44. who is bn?

  45. The casting director

  46. Kiki – BN's myspace page is set to private. Even if I posted the link… you cannot view his page or comments unless you are on his friend's list.

I would agree that tomorrow may seem a little too soon to hear back if they are in fact pitching today. However, I bet the pitches are done by this afternoon… giving NBC execs the remainder of the business day today and all of tomorrow until that 5 pm deadline to make decisions. All of the phone calls to the finalists can be made in a matter of moments if the representing CDs each call their own finalists.

OK guys… tomorrow might actually BE the DAY!

  47. oh ok I was a bit confused thanks for clearing that up

  48. wondering – thanks I now know who it is. Lets see if he adds me 🙂

  49. i was also told that tomorrow's the day. they could have already chosen most of the finalists and want to go ahead and let them know…doesn't mean they aren't scrapping to fill the last few spots.
