COMMENTING IS CLOSED! THIS POST GOT TOO BIG! YOU CAN CONTINUE THE CONVERSATION ON THE BIGGEST LOSER CASTING TIPS (SEASON 8, PAGE 4) BLOG POST!

Okay, casting is well on it’s way for season eight of Biggest Loser. I’m reposting this entry to enable people to continue the conversation started here. As you can see by the title, this is actually page three; page two is here. There’s over a couple thousand comments worth of ideas, notes, and other information, including casting directors, and former contestants (other than myself) on each of those pages, so if you have some time it’s worth exploring. Here are the vital links:
- NBC has posted casting information and the application here.
- Pete Thomas, the season 2 $100,000 winner has some of the best casting call advice out there, which you can find at www.WinningMan.com.
- Jen Kerns, a season three contestant like myself, and a doctor for the show for seasons four and five, has also put together some fantastic casting advice that you can read here.
- My original casting tips post with over a thousand comments worth of discussion, click here. Stacy, Adam, Phil, Amy and Coleen were all reading and posting in the discussion there – it’s fun to look back and realize they were some of the superstars of season six!
- My second post (fairly identical to this one), with well over two thousand comments worth of discussion, click here.
- If you’re dealing with disappointment about not being cast, then check out my post on Biggest Loser casting disappointment.
One of the questions I hear a lot is about money … how do contestants afford to be away from home and work for months at a time? I don’t know what it is now, but when I was a contestant there was a $500 a week stipend for cast members on the ranch. When you received the check you could cash it and spend it, send it home, save it, whatever. All airplane tickets, hotel accommodations, etc., for the contestants and potential cast members are taken care of by NBC, and during the casting process it self there was a $50 per diem to cover food costs.
Another question is timing; typically a season lasts for about 8-9 months. About four of this is spent in filming; if you last all the way until the final three or four, you could be away from home for as much as four months or so. Once the ranch filming wraps and the last few contestants are sent home, however, there is still another four or five months that all the contestants have to continue losing weight until the finale. In addition, potential cast members are flown out to California a couple weeks before filming begins for the final round of casting, medical checkups, psychological evals, etc. NBC brings out more people than what they need and the cast is not finalized until filming literally begins. People have been cut at the last minute and replacements flown in with hardly any time to spare. Nothing is in stone until it’s on camera!
When will you hear from Biggest Loser about your video? There is no way of knowing. I heard back a few weeks after I sent it in, but even after that it’s a big waiting game. If you get a phone number or email from a casting direction, definitely drop them a line/call every couple weeks to find out if you’re still in the running or what’s going on. Schedules and plans change almost every day, so it’s easy to get lost in the shuffle. If you don’t hear back within a month I would think your video didn’t make the cut. That doesn’t mean you can’t send in another or visit a casting call – it’s just up to you!
Finally, here’s my video application tips! This is by no means a recipe for success; it’s based on my video application and the conversations I had with casting directors out in LA in between things. I was pretty curious about the whole process so I was pumping them for info even after filming began. I’m such a nerd!
-
They’ve usually decided if they’re interested in you within the first 30-60 seconds of your video, so front load it with your best stuff. Make it interesting! Start off with something funny or exciting!
-
Keep in mind, if you’re going to be cast, your video is going to be watched hundreds of times by producers, executives, casting directors, etc. If it bores you or your friends the second or third time watching it … put some more time into it!
-
Special effects? Don’t bother! We’ve all got video editing software with all sorts of bells and whistles on our home computers, but fancy transitions are not going to sell you to people who do video editing for a living. In fact, it can distract from who you are. I’m a video editing nerd and I didn’t use any special effects other than putting my name and contact info on as a subtitle at the beginning.
-
Don’t bother talking about why you need to lose weight. When I first started filming my audition video I started describing all of my health reasons for losing weight – but when I was watching it back, I realized … they don’t need to hear it! One look at me was all they needed to know I needed to lose weight! Show them why you need to lose it; I said I needed to lose weight for my kids, and then I followed it with a minute or two of the best footage I could find of me with wrestling with my three boys. We probably filmed half an hour of that insanity and I grabbed the cutest, loudest, and funniest few moments for the audition video. Your physical need to lose weight is not nearly as interesting as who or what your losing the weight for.
-
Live loud! Reality TV is over the top, dramatic, and filled with loud personalities. They need to see that on your video! I wanted them to know that even though I was morbidly obese I was up to the challenge of the crazy competitions and workouts – so I threw on a bunch of clips from my different youth group activities; me getting slimed, snowtubing, playing paintball, screaming at events, being on stage, running around … you get the idea. Other contestants did things appropriate to their lives; Tim from Oregon had himself spinning out on his Harley, Tim from Delaware recruited his elementary school class to do things with him, Heather Hanson filmed herself running around in a sports bra all day doing her household chores and errands. The less talking and more action you can have, the better (in my opinion)!
-
If you have footage or photos of yourself thin, include those at some point on the video. If you can show them what your after will be, then do it!
Remember, enjoy the conversation here and know that I will never compromise your anonymity – not to NBC, 3Ball, Casting Directors or anyone. You can post anonymously, or you can leave your names and contact information … just remember that NBC likes to be the one announcing their cast for the show, so if you start identifying yourself publicly as a finalist, you’ll probably find yourself eliminated from the casting process. Good luck to everyone … and let me know if you make the show! Pete Thomas has more contestants on season seven than I did and I’m bitter! 😉

Considering there are less than 50 people who've posted this season, I hope the majority of us make it to that next step– sequester. One step at a time.
Lastchanceworkout-I totally agree. Thank you Matt!
TrulyBlessed: 20-30, Female, East Coast. I don't think we are competition so I wish you the best! Ha! I wonder if we went to the same casting call..
i will be there!!! and real hopeful….
thank you so much for your answers to my question! i appreciate it! 🙂 i thought i remembered that brittany had a thyroid issue….but then just figured i may have remembered wrong.
i have gone back to read most of the other posts in these threads and now i have a huge KNOT in my stomach! i could not make it to a CC for this season, and my tape won't make it to CA until tuesday – so i may be way too late for this season. especially if people think decisions will be made by the 31st. yikes! i doubt they would have time to watch my tape by then.
i will never get to sleep tonight…. 🙂
Truly Blessed-that is the way you have to look at it. I feel the same way. I gave more information than what they needed and I do not feel that they will need more. So I am in the same boat that you are in.
I am from the South and in the 30's and female.
Do you have an anon email addy you can post.
We don't have to exchange names. I just want to compare notes about what our experiences have been like. Now that I think we're in the pitching period, I don't even want to mention what CC I went to. Obviously people can find it if they want but I'd rather not put all that info back out there.
Anyway, north east coast or mid?
That was for IWillBeThere and TerminalVelocity.
TrulyBlessed if you will post an email address I will email you!
I'll start: terminalvelocity55@gmail.com
I obsessively watched all these pitches to see how they are made. Then I mentally compared the info in them to the info/footage I gave them on my home tape and in my interview.

TrulyBlessed,
Email me!
I just did.
Terminal-I just sent you an email.
Terminal Velocity-I have heard from AV too!
Truly blessed… can you elaborate more information on the "I have read on the other threads about the date being changed not once but three times"??
Truly I sent you the same email I sent Terminal
BigCollegeKID-What did you hear from AV? Did she just need additional information? Medical background? Just curious?
Waiting,
Last season, while they were casting season 7, the hearby date kept changing. It went from August something, to another August date, to a September date.
Another question… did anyone send their video in with "delivery confirmation"… I checked it today and it said it was attempted to be delivered, but they left notice that it is at the post office for them to pick up….. did anyone else have this issue with sending it with delivery confirmation?
Waiting what address did you send it to?
The one posted on NBCs website……
Waiting Video-Delivery Confirmation is the way to go. It is a P.O. Box you send it to, so all the mail has to get picked up. They only pick up Monday thru Friday so don't worry! It is n safe hands now. You can now play the waiting game like the rest of us.
I Will Be There-Just some very simple additional info. No medical forms I wish!
That happened with both videos of mine. I guess because it is a PO Box they hold it until someone picks it up. What sucked for me is that I paid top dollar for overnight and whoever didn't pick it up for 2 days. So I could have just done priority mail and saved $12.
Maybe it's an email for the medical forms that's going to be sent out on the 31st.
Thanks guys for all of your help!! 🙂
aw man….i did not send mine with delivery confirmation. i sent it express mail with guaranteed delivery – but i didn't add the delivery confirmation because i thought it might hold it up if someone had to actually sign for it. i totally did not even think about it being a PO box…..
Yes unfortunately the PO box is picked up by someone. I found that out the first Season I applied. But, when the extra info is requested you then get a different address which is a physical address to send it to and then you can overnight it and that will arrive at the receptionist desk.
well…..it is official….i won't make the show…
i just did a personality test and i came out as AB – not A.
all hope is lost….
lol…. 😀
Truly-Don't worry if you don't get the medical form because I know people who never were asked for a medical form and were sequestered to CA. So I wouldn't count or worry about it. They do a FULL medical background and test when you go to CA.
Oh and someone mentioned the CDs moving on to other jobs. I know for fact one of the CDs is now casting a love show for bigger people in LA. It's listed on realitywanted some other site.
Oh yeah shoot they go from one show to another. Sometimes a CD will work a show and then fly down to work a casting call for BL in between while working another show. It is crazy! You never know which CD's will come back each Season. I know the very first two CD's I had my one on one interview with were still doing it.
is it bad to address your video to the attn of one of the CDs? mine said i could do that if i wanted so i did – but will it just sit and sit until that person actually opens it? or will someone just take it since it says "biggest loser casting?
Express mail has a tracking number on the receipt. That's what I used for my 2nd tape.
No someone in casting will open it. Don't worry it will get to the Biggest Loser Casting department.
Truly-I wish I would have used Express Mail instead of over nighting mine but I wanted to make sure it got there by the date on my email even though it said it only had to be postmarked. I was being paranoid.
OH YAY! i did not even realize it had a tracking number! i will check that out!
thanks trulyblessed! i am sorry if i am asking annoying questions….i am really nervous and excited all of the sudden. i appreciate your kindness in responding. 🙂
iwillbethere!!
thanks! 🙂 i too thank you for your kindness. i am really not well-versed in all of this and now that i have sent off my tape – i have nothing to concentrate on to keep me busy! these next few weeks are going to be torture i tell you!
Half-It is totally torture and I keep telling myself I am not going to do this anymore because the waiting is just terrible. But, I seem to do it to myself everytime. UGH!! I keep thinking eventually it will pay off. I am always willing to help anyone I can. Hopefully it will come back good to me.
Express mail through the us postal service is overnighting. The darned thing cost me $17 to send.
i hope it will come back to you too! 🙂
i worry that i waited too late to send in my tape. but then at the same time i am kind of glad i did not do it earlier for the simple fact that i just don't know how i could have waited as long as most of you have. you all ROCK!
i am gonna have quite a few more gray hairs when all this is done!
Truly-17 is good I spent 47 to send mine Fedex
Half-Thank you! No need to worry about it. You had plenty of time to send it.
Wow, $47?!? For overnighting?!? Amazing! Well now you know. 😉
I am located in the west, and I almost wish I was even closer so I could be a fly on the wall for all of us
It'd be great to have an insider spy…aw shucks, too bad!
Well, g'nite all.
i checked out the FedEx prices today and it would have been $45 for me to overnight. CRAZY! i too went with express mail and it was also $17. can't really beat that when looking at $45. 🙂
iwillbethere – how many times have you applied? (if you don't mind me asking)
I know for a fact the home submissions still have a chance. I got it from a reliable source…not someone trying to get on the show…
So dont give up just because they are saying the cds arent watching anymore. They are, and yes some of them do go to other shows, and thats how they make their living. But remember they arent the only cds watching the tapes, they havent been there for a while when they were on cc, did you all send your videos in then??? Some one pick them up????
So please try to stop saying things like that, some of us have never made this big of a step for many many seasons before, this is our first. We have no idea what the steps are, and truth be told only the ones running the show, do.
God bless you all, try to think before you type, and send, some of us are not old pros and we stress too.
I am in the middle of tape-only sadness, no CC for me!
Every time I read about people being pitched now, and things wrapping up, my heart sinks! I have put my own personal deadline to send in my tape Monday.
I have asked this before, but have not gotten a good answer beyond what Matt or Pete have said, or watching other videos. I am looking for more specific info.
What sort of questions did they ask you in the one on one?
I have read every post here, so please don't say just look at everything before. I want to do my own sort of short one on one, since I did not go to a Casting Call.
So far my tape is filled with me running around town, but I want to hit those questions that might be good for pitching that they might be looking for – from looking at the videos online it looks like they put the person talking at the one on one under active footage of them and cut it down to 2/3 minutes.
If they contacted you and asked you for more tape, did they ask you for more active footage or more of you talking about your current life?
I am also having trouble keeping it to just 10 minutes!
I am freaking out having to cut and cut my video footage! Do you think it is bad that I am going over 10 by maybe a minute or so? Can I make it a little longer if I think what I have is good, and that I think they might want to use it?
Right now I have a variety of things that are a minute or so, and I want them to have a lot of choices and get a good feel for me and who I am. I also have some friends and family talking about me.
Does anyone think it doesn't hurt to put some extra photos in too?
I know that us video people need you "pitched" people on here to keep us up and pumped about the process!
It does feel like if you did not go to a casting call that you are doomed not to get on! Any kind advice would be nice for us in the BL camcorder camp to hear right about now!
Love ya – and good luck to everyone!
MaMaGlaze,
I just want to clarify. I have finally caught up with reading this new thread and I don't see anywhere where anyone said the CDs stopped watching tapes. What I did see was a lot of uncertainty. So yes, like you said, the only who knows anything for "sure" are the ones in charge. I don't want a repeat of page two so I just wanted to point out that you're correct in saying home tapes have a chance, however, no one said they didn't in the first place.
Hope there are no misunderstandings. We're all here to help. 🙂 Joy!
Oooh, looks like a good time to evoke a song from my old pal Stimpy:
Happy happy joy joy! Happy happy joy joy.
I don't think anyone said anything about bad about the CD's going onto other shows. That doesn't mean anything. They still have ones that stay at 3ball all the time. The ones that go around from City to City are just contracted out and travel from show to show. I don't think anyone is trying to discourage anyone on here.
