COMMENTING IS CLOSED! THIS POST GOT TOO BIG! YOU CAN CONTINUE THE CONVERSATION ON THE BIGGEST LOSER CASTING TIPS (SEASON 8, PAGE 4) BLOG POST!

Okay, casting is well on it’s way for season eight of Biggest Loser. I’m reposting this entry to enable people to continue the conversation started here. As you can see by the title, this is actually page three; page two is here. There’s over a couple thousand comments worth of ideas, notes, and other information, including casting directors, and former contestants (other than myself) on each of those pages, so if you have some time it’s worth exploring. Here are the vital links:
- NBC has posted casting information and the application here.
- Pete Thomas, the season 2 $100,000 winner has some of the best casting call advice out there, which you can find at www.WinningMan.com.
- Jen Kerns, a season three contestant like myself, and a doctor for the show for seasons four and five, has also put together some fantastic casting advice that you can read here.
- My original casting tips post with over a thousand comments worth of discussion, click here. Stacy, Adam, Phil, Amy and Coleen were all reading and posting in the discussion there – it’s fun to look back and realize they were some of the superstars of season six!
- My second post (fairly identical to this one), with well over two thousand comments worth of discussion, click here.
- If you’re dealing with disappointment about not being cast, then check out my post on Biggest Loser casting disappointment.
One of the questions I hear a lot is about money … how do contestants afford to be away from home and work for months at a time? I don’t know what it is now, but when I was a contestant there was a $500 a week stipend for cast members on the ranch. When you received the check you could cash it and spend it, send it home, save it, whatever. All airplane tickets, hotel accommodations, etc., for the contestants and potential cast members are taken care of by NBC, and during the casting process it self there was a $50 per diem to cover food costs.
Another question is timing; typically a season lasts for about 8-9 months. About four of this is spent in filming; if you last all the way until the final three or four, you could be away from home for as much as four months or so. Once the ranch filming wraps and the last few contestants are sent home, however, there is still another four or five months that all the contestants have to continue losing weight until the finale. In addition, potential cast members are flown out to California a couple weeks before filming begins for the final round of casting, medical checkups, psychological evals, etc. NBC brings out more people than what they need and the cast is not finalized until filming literally begins. People have been cut at the last minute and replacements flown in with hardly any time to spare. Nothing is in stone until it’s on camera!
When will you hear from Biggest Loser about your video? There is no way of knowing. I heard back a few weeks after I sent it in, but even after that it’s a big waiting game. If you get a phone number or email from a casting direction, definitely drop them a line/call every couple weeks to find out if you’re still in the running or what’s going on. Schedules and plans change almost every day, so it’s easy to get lost in the shuffle. If you don’t hear back within a month I would think your video didn’t make the cut. That doesn’t mean you can’t send in another or visit a casting call – it’s just up to you!
Finally, here’s my video application tips! This is by no means a recipe for success; it’s based on my video application and the conversations I had with casting directors out in LA in between things. I was pretty curious about the whole process so I was pumping them for info even after filming began. I’m such a nerd!
-
They’ve usually decided if they’re interested in you within the first 30-60 seconds of your video, so front load it with your best stuff. Make it interesting! Start off with something funny or exciting!
-
Keep in mind, if you’re going to be cast, your video is going to be watched hundreds of times by producers, executives, casting directors, etc. If it bores you or your friends the second or third time watching it … put some more time into it!
-
Special effects? Don’t bother! We’ve all got video editing software with all sorts of bells and whistles on our home computers, but fancy transitions are not going to sell you to people who do video editing for a living. In fact, it can distract from who you are. I’m a video editing nerd and I didn’t use any special effects other than putting my name and contact info on as a subtitle at the beginning.
-
Don’t bother talking about why you need to lose weight. When I first started filming my audition video I started describing all of my health reasons for losing weight – but when I was watching it back, I realized … they don’t need to hear it! One look at me was all they needed to know I needed to lose weight! Show them why you need to lose it; I said I needed to lose weight for my kids, and then I followed it with a minute or two of the best footage I could find of me with wrestling with my three boys. We probably filmed half an hour of that insanity and I grabbed the cutest, loudest, and funniest few moments for the audition video. Your physical need to lose weight is not nearly as interesting as who or what your losing the weight for.
-
Live loud! Reality TV is over the top, dramatic, and filled with loud personalities. They need to see that on your video! I wanted them to know that even though I was morbidly obese I was up to the challenge of the crazy competitions and workouts – so I threw on a bunch of clips from my different youth group activities; me getting slimed, snowtubing, playing paintball, screaming at events, being on stage, running around … you get the idea. Other contestants did things appropriate to their lives; Tim from Oregon had himself spinning out on his Harley, Tim from Delaware recruited his elementary school class to do things with him, Heather Hanson filmed herself running around in a sports bra all day doing her household chores and errands. The less talking and more action you can have, the better (in my opinion)!
-
If you have footage or photos of yourself thin, include those at some point on the video. If you can show them what your after will be, then do it!
Remember, enjoy the conversation here and know that I will never compromise your anonymity – not to NBC, 3Ball, Casting Directors or anyone. You can post anonymously, or you can leave your names and contact information … just remember that NBC likes to be the one announcing their cast for the show, so if you start identifying yourself publicly as a finalist, you’ll probably find yourself eliminated from the casting process. Good luck to everyone … and let me know if you make the show! Pete Thomas has more contestants on season seven than I did and I’m bitter! 😉

T30, I have two bodybuggs (an old gray model & a new black model) – they are amazing! I would so recommend them. It is very insightful.
Question to the board: What will you miss most while you're on campus?
I am tied btwn my kids/internet/books/movies
Sleeping in my own bed, family, friends, tv, and of course the four legged furry friend!
Oh and my cellphone.
ah, yes, the cell phone…how could I forget that one also. I love texting!!!
TrulyBlessed
I would miss my spouse and child the most. Watching this last week's epidsode I bawled like a baby because I was thinking of how it would be to be away for that long and finally come home to your family. When I talk to my spouse about it I cry already. I want to be on the show so bad and would do this for 6 months or more if it meant saving my life for my family but the part that you get no contact is what I would miss the most.
Also I would miss the food. Food has become my friend that has never left me like others have. I know that on the ranch I will be able to come to terms with this and truly break the addiction but I know at first I will miss it and going back into the real word afterwards will be a challenge.
Also–quick question–can we NOT take books on the ranch? I've heard of all the other things but wondered about books. People have talked about IPODS but I read a lot and have devotions every day so I hope that we could at least have a Bible and a devotion.
has anyone ever gotten to the point of receiving the sequester list of items you can/can't bring? I'd love to hear what some of the examples are.
I will miss my phone..we cannot have ipods??
I heard we can have iPods for dark days. I think Matt said that.
Again, Curious, I feel the same way. I'm already prepping my life for my departure. It's just a gut feeling I have.
I asked if books we allowed and I was told no. The reason being is that it is some people's enabler. I know it is one of mine as I snack while reading. And I read while snacking. I READ a LOT. And I am Biggest Loser eligible.
Obviously no computer. I'm supposed to be sleeping and look what I'm doing. Plus someone on here introduced me to FarmTown and I've been on and off of it all day.

Ok so it's quiet again. Good time for me to leave before I get sucked into another conversation. G'nite all!
he peeps if anyone has any idea to my question please answer or comment so after my cc i saw my cd looking thru my app, pics, just everything i gave him i did put a video i n there now i havent gotten a cb yet i know they said 2weeks but im wondering if they have enough from there to possibly pitch me or what no i havent received a bio/background email but is there a chance that they could pitch me without me knowing or them requesting info? i know im stretching in a bit but i really have a gut feeling that i have a great chance of still beeing on the show… the last 3 seasons that i was going to try out something major happened and i couldnt try out or even try to loose the weight on my own this is the first season that nothing has happened ……….oh am i just being naive?
are call backs done for la?
tblfan: I think there is a chance given that you are an LA CC that you could be pitched first and contacted later if they have everything they need. Stay prayed up!
My3sons!!!!!!! Hey there cutie pie how are you? Omg, the website was not working when I last checked it a couple of days ago, so I finally checked it and wow y'all have been busy. I don't have time to read everything that's been posted so can you fill me in? I read that the L.A. casting call people have already been notified:( Is that true? They are done:( They forgot me!! I need to call Paul or something, he'll remember me. Have you heard anything? Did you send in a tape? I'll try to check this at work tomorrow if I get the chance. Hope you are doing well. Take care!
thanks misQ youve given me hope i just have a good feeling about this
sponge bob where did you read that?
CURIOUS,
What other tv shows did you try out for?
Just throwing this out there…the NBC.com casting website says videos must be sent in by March 31st. The casting directors have said that ALL videos are viewed.
I know Paul told us at the cc that videos were due by March 21st, and I just noticed the March 31st date yesterday.
Also, please remember before you get discouraged by all of the dates being thrown about on this blog, the dates have been pushed back a few times for the past three or four seasons of casting. 🙂
Hope ya'll have a great day!
~Christi
is there anyone out there that has trouble sleeping at night because they picture theirself on this show!!!???
Nope, no trouble sleeping here. I get to dream about being on the show when I sleep.
Hey all..
Ok….I was told that they would start sorting and cutting people by the end of March and then possibly have a list of hopefuls by the first part of April.
I also know that I am being pitched.
Until you hear that they have a cast, we all have a chance. Don't let what others say about where they are crimp your style.
Video is done-done! Burnt and labeled. Photos picked and form filled and signed. Everything is ready to be mailed tomorrow. Wish me luck!
Hopefully I will be the first video person to get a ring on the phone or emailed med/bio forms. Thinking positive!
Goodmorning all!! I hope everyone has a BLESSED day and remembers to live the life they are given now!! I have to keep that in check. My hubby gave me a lecture about it yesterday. I was travelling and did not have access to internet and I kept asking if he had heard anything and he said "I'm not supposed to tell you but they were here and put up survelleiance cameras to capture every moment of your neurotic behavior about this show!" He was joking of course but I bet that would be funny for them to do becasue I know I'm not the only one obsessing about it!
Oh and good job LemonGirl!! It is lots of relief to have that part of it finished isn't it?
I feel relieved and it's out of my hands now and up to fate, but now it's onto the waiting game with everyone else! I am going to try to just "forget about it" and get back to normal, and hope for a happy surprise, but I am pretty sure that isn't going to happen anytime soon! At least until Mid-April!
Endurance is a kids show for teens age 12-15 right?
Oh wow JimBob. I didn't know you applied for TBL. I thought it was just your wife who applied. Are they doing an adult version of the tv show Endurance?
i thought that show was cancelled…guess not
Yes the show was cancelled. Am I the only one who thinks JimBob is full of it? LOL 🙂 Sorry JimBob but everything you've come on here and said is humerous and unbelievable – very entertaining though I must say!
Oh I know maybe you should be on the new version of "Hee Haw" that would be awesome! 🙂
3ball called me too, I'm going to be the next Bachelorette, they don't care if I'm married. That's the TWIST. At the end, my husband will come out and fight the guy who has stolen my heart.
JimBob, I think if you get called to be on the show you should get off this board as fast as you can! You will have to sign a confidentiality contract so no I wouldn't do that.
I read that Endurance was not cancelled but put on hold. But I also read that it's a kids show. That's why I asked.
Thinking about getting on TBL…
Ya know, for sequestering you're not allowed to talk to the other contestants that are there (from what I read). Maybe we can come up with some outfit signal to let people know who we McNutties are. It'd be as simple as looking through your wardrobe and selecting something that's not of the ordinary then telling us what it is.
Maybe like a button on your shirt or something? Or a certain colored bandana? Or even some kind of hand signal?
Or maybe just clothes in general. They might make us remove buttons and stuff.
No offense all but if I did in fact make it that far I am following all rules to a T!!! Just wait until you make it on the ranch and discuss it then.
Jimbob- what is the purpose of blogging under different names/identities? Is it so you can have a conversation with yourself?
True Applied Again – they may catch on to that. I think I read before that general chat was ok when they were chaperoned. Maybe a code word non-related to casting like: spinich. LOL That would mean you were a McNutter!
Who said anyone was taking your house JimBob. You're a riot 🙂 Okay, okay let's keep the convos on casting.
The lighting in my tape was horrible compared to others I've seen, plus I should have done more outside stuff. It was all taped in my house. But the 6 days I had to make it, plus dealing with everyday life was stressful so there wasn't much time to do it and make it as awesome as I would have liked.
Does anyone feel like after viewing their tapes over and over that you could have done better?
Hi everyone, I hardly ever post but I check out the blog every day or two. Does anyone know how many people are being pitched to NBC?
I have second guessed my tape from the moment that I dropped it in the mail. I think that's just the nature of the beast— the waiting just makes it worse! Only having a week and having a cold really put a damper on my video– I sound like I was holding my nose when I was talking, lol. But in the end, the tape is me and my life. That's what they asked for– it might not be the most exciting adventurous thing, but it was full of things I do every single week. So if they're looking for REAL video, they got it. If they're looking for amped-up, synthetic situations, I'm out.
LMBO@flapping mullets!!!!
Annonymous: About the lighting. The lighting on mine looked GREAT on camera and on the computer while editing, but when I watched the DVD on T.V it was dark and not so great. I hope they watch them on computers!
Curious, I didn't ask if anyone wanted to brag about their tape.
soonergirl, I have not heard how many will be pitched yet. Neither here or from my CD.
WhoIsGonnaWin?, I guess we'll never really know EXACTLY what they are looking for, but we can just hope for the best!
runninglate, I don't know how I could have made the lighting any better, my house just has bad lighting as it is. Maybe I could have opened the blinds on the window or something. I was thinking it would be too much light coming in from behind. Oh well, it is done, so now we wait. Good luck!
I just got am email from one of the casting directors. The dead line for the tapes is March 31 and yes they all will be watched. The will not know the finalists until mid to late April and they said all we can do is just wait and be patient.
Yarra and Iamgoingtomakeit Do you have annon emails that I can contact you. I have some questions for you I dont want to post on here.
Want on the show, that is the same response I got.
Heavyweight-my annony email address is iwillbetherebl8@yahoo.com
Want on the show-those are the exact dates I heard also. Everyone needs to chill. The CD's get a kick out of watching this board. Once the CD's submit our info to 3Ball then 3Ball compiles our info and presents to NBC. The CD's no longer have control.
annenoni muss- dont listen to him.
annenoni-I have second guessed my video a ton. There are parts that I LOVE and think they will too and then there are parts that I think-oh I could have cut that out or the lighting is terrible there or why didn't I keep that part in? I've watched mine over and over and find new things to critque every time. The lighting was tricky and you realy had to make sure it was in front and not behind. ButI did that for the most part and my lighting still was not good.
All we can hope is that they see us through our video adn know that we are NOT producers or editing gurus and if we were we would be doing their job. We are just full of life and personality people stuck in a fat suit with its zipper stuck !!! 🙂 🙂 I keep telling myself this so I won't go crazy.
My lighting was better on my computer as well. When I played it on the TV it was horrible. I"m for watching it on the computer! Someone should contact NBC fast!! 🙂 🙂
Hello! I am SO GLAD this blog is back up and running. I was having serious "issues"…I think I need to read and post in order to cope with the waiting. I am sure most of you understand/agree.
It is one week today since my video arrived for viewing. I keep checking my phone and email over and over. I am starting to get a little down…for no good reason really…I know that it is far from decided yet. I think I just wish I was where some of you are in the process.
Best of luck everyone!
does anybody know paul gordons email address ?
