Biggest Loser casting tips (season 12)

Biggest Loser is now casting for season 12!  Casting calls will be announced in January, so stay tuned.  Basically, this post is a collection of tips I’ve written based on my experience making the cast of season three, as well as some links to casting advice I don’t think you should miss:

  • NBC has posted casting information and the application here.  They have all the casting news and information on a special blog just for Biggest Loser casting, which you can find here.
  • Pete Thomas, the season 2 $100,000 winner has some of the best casting call advice out there, which you can find at his website, Winning Man.
  • Jen Kerns, a season three contestant like myself, and a doctor for the show for seasons four and five, has also put together some fantastic casting advice that you can read here.
  • Holland, a casting director for Biggest Loser sent me a bunch of great advice on how to be casted, you can find it here.  She updated them October, 2009.
  • I’ve been posting these casting tips for the last few seasons and they always seem to end up with thousands of comments; just about every season has contestants that were hanging out on here, reading and giving each other thoughts and advice.  You can find the most recent one here.
  • If you’re dealing with disappointment about not being cast, then check out my post on Biggest Loser casting disappointment.

One of the questions I hear a lot is about money … how do contestants afford to be away from home and work for months at a time? I don’t know what it is now, but when I was a contestant there was a $500 a week stipend for cast members on the ranch. When you received the check you could cash it and spend it, send it home, save it, whatever. All airplane tickets, hotel accommodations, etc., for the contestants and potential cast members are taken care of by NBC, and during the casting process it self there was a $50 per diem to cover food costs.

Another question is timing; typically a season lasts for about 8-9 months. About four of this is spent in filming; if you last all the way until the final three or four, you could be away from home for as much as four months or so. Once the ranch filming wraps and the last few contestants are sent home, however, there is still another four or five months that all the contestants have to continue losing weight until the finale. In addition, potential cast members are flown out to California a couple weeks before filming begins for the final round of casting, medical checkups, psychological evals, etc. NBC brings out more people than what they need and the cast is not finalized until filming literally begins. People have been cut at the last minute and replacements flown in with hardly any time to spare. Nothing is in stone until it’s on camera!

When will you hear from Biggest Loser about your video? There is no way of knowing. I heard back a few weeks after I sent it in, but even after that it’s a big waiting game. If you get a phone number or email from a casting direction, definitely drop them a line/call every couple weeks to find out if you’re still in the running or what’s going on. Schedules and plans change almost every day, so it’s easy to get lost in the shuffle. If you don’t hear back within a month I would think your video didn’t make the cut. That doesn’t mean you can’t send in another or visit a casting call – it’s just up to you!

Finally, here’s my video application tips! This is by no means a recipe for success; it’s based on my video application and the conversations I had with casting directors out in LA in between things. I was pretty curious about the whole process so I was pumping them for info even after filming began. I’m such a nerd!

  • They’ve usually decided if they’re interested in you within the first 30-60 seconds of your video, so front load it with your best stuff. Make it interesting! Start off with something funny or exciting!
  • Keep in mind, if you’re going to be cast, your video is going to be watched hundreds of times by producers, executives, casting directors, etc. If it bores you or your friends the second or third time watching it … put some more time into it!
  • Special effects? Don’t bother! We’ve all got video editing software with all sorts of bells and whistles on our home computers, but fancy transitions are not going to sell you to people who do video editing for a living. In fact, it can distract from who you are. I’m a video editing nerd and I didn’t use any special effects other than putting my name and contact info on as a subtitle at the beginning.
  • Don’t bother talking about why you need to lose weight. When I first started filming my audition video I started describing all of my health reasons for losing weight – but when I was watching it back, I realized … they don’t need to hear it! One look at me was all they needed to know I needed to lose weight! Show them why you need to lose it; I said I needed to lose weight for my kids, and then I followed it with a minute or two of the best footage I could find of me with wrestling with my three boys. We probably filmed half an hour of that insanity and I grabbed the cutest, loudest, and funniest few moments for the audition video. Your physical need to lose weight is not nearly as interesting as who or what your losing the weight for.
  • Live loud! Reality TV is over the top, dramatic, and filled with loud personalities. They need to see that on your video! I wanted them to know that even though I was morbidly obese I was up to the challenge of the crazy competitions and workouts – so I threw on a bunch of clips from my different youth group activities; me getting slimed, snowtubing, playing paintball, screaming at events, being on stage, running around … you get the idea. Other contestants did things appropriate to their lives; Tim from Oregon had himself spinning out on his Harley, Tim from Delaware recruited his elementary school class to do things with him, Heather Hanson filmed herself running around in a sports bra all day doing her household chores and errands. The less talking and more action you can have, the better (in my opinion)!
  • If you have footage or photos of yourself thin, include those at some point on the video. If you can show them what your after will be, then do it!

Remember, enjoy the conversation here and know that I will never compromise your anonymity – not to NBC, 3Ball, Casting Directors or anyone. You can post anonymously, or you can leave your names and contact information … just remember that NBC likes to be the one announcing their cast for the show, so if you start identifying yourself publicly as a finalist, you’ll probably find yourself eliminated from the casting process. Be aware that casting directors do check in at my blog to see what people are saying, get a feel for what questions are going on out there, and sometimes to give us updates. Good luck to everyone … and let me know if you make the show! I get a kick out of hearing about the different contestants that have hung out on my blog before making the show! ;)

can i ask you what they needed after the bio?

  2. They said just wait…

  3. Hey!! well I have given up making it this season… can I just ask though that if any of y'all actually make it onto the show, will you come back on here and write and tell all of us bloggers the news? Even if its a few months down the line? I think that'd be awesome to know that 1 of us "made it"

How is everyone! I'm sooooo glad, I am NOT stressing out over BL this season, like I did the last two seasons!!! 😀 I'm doing really great eating good and losing weight in a healthy way, exercising, setting goals, not stressing about NOT eating but eating every few hours, drinking water, and making and buying healthy choices 😀

As, yall know, I've gotten into X Factor 😀 It has been so much fun and if you love to sing, then definately try out for the show 😀

Here is a litte song by Black Eyed Peas, "I've got a feeling", I re-wrote a bit to tell about X Factor, it's only 30 seconds but kind of cool, yall might like it 😀

Well, I've now been UNWATCHED in both Norway and Conneticut.

    Still NO hits in California.

Nothing for me, either! 🙂 This week should prove to be really interesting! But, haven't we said that for a few weeks :)?

I am pretty sure, if you are here, and/or applied for BL its not because your dream is to be on t.v. and get famous or rich or whatever.

The majority of us have a dream of losing weight for whatever reason. Just remember that is what your DREAM really is no matter what the outcome of BL12 (or any season) is.

  12. @WTFisthat

    Agreed.

  13. @WTFisthat

    I agree…she is nuts.

  14. Why is everyone so sure doctor notes have not been sent out?

  15. I have a feeling that people got called this morning…thats how it was last season…

On 4/28/2011 My tryout partner and I got an email to our home emails giving an exact date they hoped would have finalists selected by and someone would call the finalists. Don't call email blah blah b;ah we will be in touch with you. And then the next day on Holland's Facebook page she is mentioning end of May as a selection time which is later than I was told in email. Is this a general email to me or does this mean I am close to being a finalist. Because I have tweeted with and chatted with people who did not recieve this email.

Anyone else here get that email?

  18. @BL12Hopeful Guy

Most of us got it…I did.

  19. @BL12Hopeful Guy

If your email gave the date of May 6th then it may be the one that went out to a lot of people…we have been trying to figure out on here if it was generic or not….the jury is still out.

  20. @yeahno

I think it went to people who were pitched IMO…

  21. @WTFisthat

    STILL LOL!!!!!

I have only been technically called once when I was called for one on one interview. But since then I have gotten a couple of hang in there personal emails and such

I mean how many peolple commenting/blogging in here have gotten this email are we all here because we are still in the running I mean how people here are recieving this email?

  23. BL12Hopeful Guy Avatar
    BL12Hopeful Guy

I think a few of us that are here beacause we are hunting and searching for more insight because we are close to the selection process am I right?

  24. BL12Hopeful Guy Avatar

How many people who have been posting here since that April 28th email actually got that email?

  25. BL12Hopeful Guy Avatar

Where are some of you from and where did you audition?

  26. IMO, in the past, publicly given dates are usually a little farther out than the real deal. The last few seasons finalists were called ever-so-slightly earlier than the publicly given dates. Privately given dates are usually a little closer to fact. IMO.

The only thing that doesn't make sense to me is how many late submission tapes have not been viewed (this time around). My limited experience has been that they wrap it up within a couple of weeks of the tape deadline, and that is not the case this season.

  27. @Tempted

There is NO WAY that anyone could move forward for this season who has not completed the background/bio, etc. I was TOLD that by a CD.

  28. UNLESS it is someone at the very end and they wourd rush everything, but I was told that is VERY rare…

  29. BL12Hopeful Guy Avatar
    BL12Hopeful Guy

Well I have done all the Bio Background and all that stuff they asked for already…any responses on who here has gotten this email I am afraid to get into what exactly was said in email. I dont want to mess up my chances….

    The suspense is killing me

  31. @hmmmmm

If that is the case then that email wasn't to just people being pitched. Trust me, I wish it was since I received it too….

  32. BL12Hopeful Guy Avatar
    BL12Hopeful Guy

When did you guys audition/send in the Bio Background and all that extra stuff they ask for. I was complete with all my stuff an sent in around mid march.

  33. BL12Hopeful Guy Avatar
    BL12Hopeful Guy

I sent physical copies of my personal HT and my partner and I also made a team tape. that team tape I posted on vimeo and sent them that link too. It got a private view close to the time I let the CD know it was available…but shortly after that view they would have recieved my physical videos . BTW I auditioned in Orlando and live here in FLA how bout you guys?

  34. I was complete by mid march as well.

  35. BL12Hopeful Guy Avatar
    BL12Hopeful Guy

I really think we are more in the running than some of these glass half emptiers are giving credit for.

  36. I'm only basing my opinion of the email on what somebody posted in here that someone received it that hadn't moved past the callback and that a couple of people who knew they were no longer being considered (due to their team being split up) received it. You could be right, I hope you are.

  37. BL12Hopeful Guy Avatar
    BL12Hopeful Guy

well my partner and I both got it and we havent officially heard via a call if we were split up or not they asked us seperately if we had any other family members as well at on point

  38. We were asked that as well. But quite a while ago.. like at the end of march. When were you asked that?

  39. BL12Hopeful Guy Avatar
    BL12Hopeful Guy

    yeah around same time

  40. @BL12Hopeful Guy

    is this your first time?

  41. @BL12Hopeful Guy

A lot of us got the email (with the 5/6 notification date). I think it was sent to people who'd made it past the last "Congrats" email, but it does NOT mean you're a finalist. Both my partner and I got the email and I know for an absolute fact that I'm out… and my partner is not. I don't think it means a whole heck of a lot, unfortunately. That said, I do believe finalists will be notified either this week or early next. Just based on a conversation with a CD… nothing concrete, just a vague time line.

  42. @JustWaiting

Not trying to sound rude.. just curious.. if I knew I was out, I don't think I would hang around the blogs. I can't help but think its your partner that is out and you that are actually still in. If I am off base I am just curious of your mindset as this site wouldn't be something I would want to be such a vocal part of if I was out of the running.

  43. And not that I expect you to share with me because that could give away your identity, but you said you recently spoke with a CD regarding your "unique situation". Is that for bl13? I hope I'm not confusing you with someone else on here but I am just curious since you seem to have a bit more info than others on here.. kinda like runningfaster.

  44. @blogstalker

I think I have the same info – for the most part – as the people who were notified that they're still in the running. I'm definitely out… but my partner is someone I'm very close to (family member) and I wouldn't say they're the most tech savvy of sorts…lol 😉 So I keep up on the gossip (which is what a lot of it is, I'm sure) to try and piece together what the HECK is happening! Just like everyone else 🙂 And stalking the board is way less time-consuming when you know you're out… I just check every day or two to see if I can report anything new to my 'partner.'

  45. Ever watch Rounders. And when he is talking about if you don't know who the sucker is then your the sucker.

Well if you don't KNOW that your in the running and very close to being done…then you are not in the running.

Kind of the same thing at this point. And when I say know I mean really KNOW. Without a doubt.

  46. @lurknomore

NOT TRUE pal…I know 2 people who went to finals last season and did not have ANY contact after the "you are still in it" email until they got the call they were going to finals…

  47. @lurknomore

    You sound like a rookie…

  48. @hmmmmm

    whatever you say, pal.

  49. @lurknomore

I said you must be a rookie because NO ONE knows without a doubt!

  50. there are some out there that know beyond a doubt that this week they are in the running still. They know more than us. They received emails we don't.
