Biggest Loser is now casting for season 12! Casting calls will be announced in January, so stay tuned. Basically, this post is a collection of tips I’ve written based on my experience making the cast of season three, as well as some links to casting advice I don’t think you should miss:
- NBC has posted casting information and the application here. They have all the casting news and information on a special blog just for Biggest Loser casting, which you can find here.
- Pete Thomas, the season 2 $100,000 winner has some of the best casting call advice out there, which you can find at his website, Winning Man.
- Jen Kerns, a season three contestant like myself, and a doctor for the show for seasons four and five, has also put together some fantastic casting advice that you can read here.
- Holland, a casting director for Biggest Loser sent me a bunch of great advice on how to be casted, you can find it here. She updated them October, 2009.
- I’ve been posting these casting tips for the last few seasons and they always seem to end up with thousands of comments; just about every season has contestants that were hanging out on here, reading and giving each other thoughts and advice. You can find the most recent one here.
- If you’re dealing with disappointment about not being cast, then check out my post on Biggest Loser casting disappointment.
One of the questions I hear a lot is about money … how do contestants afford to be away from home and work for months at a time? I don’t know what it is now, but when I was a contestant there was a $500 a week stipend for cast members on the ranch. When you received the check you could cash it and spend it, send it home, save it, whatever. All airplane tickets, hotel accommodations, etc., for the contestants and potential cast members are taken care of by NBC, and during the casting process it self there was a $50 per diem to cover food costs.
Another question is timing; typically a season lasts for about 8-9 months. About four of this is spent in filming; if you last all the way until the final three or four, you could be away from home for as much as four months or so. Once the ranch filming wraps and the last few contestants are sent home, however, there is still another four or five months that all the contestants have to continue losing weight until the finale. In addition, potential cast members are flown out to California a couple weeks before filming begins for the final round of casting, medical checkups, psychological evals, etc. NBC brings out more people than what they need and the cast is not finalized until filming literally begins. People have been cut at the last minute and replacements flown in with hardly any time to spare. Nothing is in stone until it’s on camera!
When will you hear from Biggest Loser about your video? There is no way of knowing. I heard back a few weeks after I sent it in, but even after that it’s a big waiting game. If you get a phone number or email from a casting direction, definitely drop them a line/call every couple weeks to find out if you’re still in the running or what’s going on. Schedules and plans change almost every day, so it’s easy to get lost in the shuffle. If you don’t hear back within a month I would think your video didn’t make the cut. That doesn’t mean you can’t send in another or visit a casting call – it’s just up to you!
Finally, here’s my video application tips! This is by no means a recipe for success; it’s based on my video application and the conversations I had with casting directors out in LA in between things. I was pretty curious about the whole process so I was pumping them for info even after filming began. I’m such a nerd!
-
They’ve usually decided if they’re interested in you within the first 30-60 seconds of your video, so front load it with your best stuff. Make it interesting! Start off with something funny or exciting!
-
Keep in mind, if you’re going to be cast, your video is going to be watched hundreds of times by producers, executives, casting directors, etc. If it bores you or your friends the second or third time watching it … put some more time into it!
-
Special effects? Don’t bother! We’ve all got video editing software with all sorts of bells and whistles on our home computers, but fancy transitions are not going to sell you to people who do video editing for a living. In fact, it can distract from who you are. I’m a video editing nerd and I didn’t use any special effects other than putting my name and contact info on as a subtitle at the beginning.
-
Don’t bother talking about why you need to lose weight. When I first started filming my audition video I started describing all of my health reasons for losing weight – but when I was watching it back, I realized … they don’t need to hear it! One look at me was all they needed to know I needed to lose weight! Show them why you need to lose it; I said I needed to lose weight for my kids, and then I followed it with a minute or two of the best footage I could find of me with wrestling with my three boys. We probably filmed half an hour of that insanity and I grabbed the cutest, loudest, and funniest few moments for the audition video. Your physical need to lose weight is not nearly as interesting as who or what your losing the weight for.
-
Live loud! Reality TV is over the top, dramatic, and filled with loud personalities. They need to see that on your video! I wanted them to know that even though I was morbidly obese I was up to the challenge of the crazy competitions and workouts – so I threw on a bunch of clips from my different youth group activities; me getting slimed, snowtubing, playing paintball, screaming at events, being on stage, running around … you get the idea. Other contestants did things appropriate to their lives; Tim from Oregon had himself spinning out on his Harley, Tim from Delaware recruited his elementary school class to do things with him, Heather Hanson filmed herself running around in a sports bra all day doing her household chores and errands. The less talking and more action you can have, the better (in my opinion)!
-
If you have footage or photos of yourself thin, include those at some point on the video. If you can show them what your after will be, then do it!
Remember, enjoy the conversation here and know that I will never compromise your anonymity – not to NBC, 3Ball, Casting Directors or anyone. You can post anonymously, or you can leave your names and contact information … just remember that NBC likes to be the one announcing their cast for the show, so if you start identifying yourself publicly as a finalist, you’ll probably find yourself eliminated from the casting process. Be aware that casting directors do check in at my blog to see what people are saying, get a feel for what questions are going on out there, and sometimes to give us updates. Good luck to everyone … and let me know if you make the show! I get a kick out of hearing about the different contestants that have hung out on my blog before making the show! ![]()

@Realdeal
lol…I dont think theyre just clerks as you say, but I do think too much weight is given to them in the decision making process. I like to think of them as "Bird Dogs" as we say in the south. They scare up the hopefuls and then you have to make it through them in order to make it on to the show. But after the Callback Interview, I dont think they have much left in the decision making process.
Still looking for more annonymous peeps who got the Contracts and more.
Sorry to all of us who didn't make it. It can be quite difficult. This time around was easier for me to take then two times ago. This time I but my video up, which received over 10,000 of the over 14,000 views within one week in particular. Our family has been so blessed by all of the people we have had the pleasure to meet and friends we have been able to make. On my Facebook fan page and Youtube channel I have many published comments that were beyond humbling. Privately I have had even more, some from past contestants and one from a past winner of the show. My video end wasn't meant to be what it turned out. (I never really allow myself to show that side. I try to always keep things positive and be the "strong" one.)
We live in the real world. I would be a liar if I said that I wouldn't love to be on the ranch right now. I will probably try again for Season 13 if it is singles just because I still have the weight to lose and I never give up on things easily.
Rather than letting BL run my life, as it easily can. I choose to allow it to impact my life so that my life can impact others. I will continue to work towards my weight loss goals as I always have. Some weeks will be more productive than others.
Instead of being negative, let us take this time to lift one another up and build a structure of support that we can all take part in and be proud of.
Don't get me wrong, we can still hope and dream of making it on the ranch. Just don't let it consume you. That will only prompt bitterness.
congrats to those who have made it and may God bless and protect you all.
If you watch the casting directors (joke they direct nothing) videos Mark is a complete douche this could be a #1 show with the right casting but no that's why NBC has not had a hit show for awhile. NBC could not find talent if it knocked on their door. If they read this blog I challenge them that I could put together a much more compelling cast than they ever could! Come on NBC you got the balls. Your casting company has three.
Hey Everyone – After all the craziness over my past audition attempts, I wanted to share my experience to help demystify the process. I know Holland posted a "step-by-step" of the process, but its really not helpful unless your a cd. Below is my experiences of the casting process from the "auditionee" point of view.
1. Send in video / application
2. Get VIP to casting call
3. Go to casting call
4. Get called back
5. Receive request for additional video, photos, background check
6. Receive request for additional questions / answers
7. Receive request for 3rd person Biography
8. Receive request for Doctor Okay
9. Receive approx. travel dates / information
10. Receive finals contracts and pay information
11. Receive the call you've been selected as a finalist
12. Fly out to CA
13. Initial interview with NBC personnel
14. Meet with Dr H
15. Final interview with NBC producers / execs
16. Go on to ranch
Now, we all know the process is not always uniform, and you may skip or reorder some of these steps. Please feel free to correct me if I missed anything.
I will not be auditioning again, but i hope this can help other people understand the process a little better.
sooo…why hasnt there been a season for teenagers yet???
@Mackenzie
you need to be at least 18. I think they should do a college student season. it would probably be more competitive since everyone would be on more of a level playing field.

Mackenzie :sooo…why hasnt there been a season for teenagers yet???
Because of the California gaming laws which require you to be 18 to gamble. There is a HUGE PRIZE to the winner of this game.

What about the college students in their 60's, 70's, 80's, or even in their 90's? Working for a college for many years, I've known quite a few.

I voted for…I cannot tell you, cause some of you may not have watched it yet.
A college student season wouldn't interest me….:)
My partner and I made it to 7 for the season that's on tv now. I didn't try this season as it was way too much of an emotional rollercoaster. "You are perfect for the show ect…. oh and btw we need this by yesterday". I however; am addicted to this blog and have read it daily to see everyone's progress and updates.
@mando
I totally get being addicted to this blog!! I can't figure out why I can't stop myself 🙂 I really haven't been in the process since seasons 8/9, but I can't help myself from checking this site!
@DietSnappleLover
After #10 I got a bunch more stuff, and still didnt make it to 11…
10a. Rules for Travel/Airport and What to bring to Hotel
10b. Checklist of what to bring to Ranch
10c. BL Ranch Contract and New Season rules
10d. Size Chart to fill out for Clothes
Until these last few emails, I knew it was still a longshot. But after receiving this even my skeptical boyfriend was sure I was going and started making plans for my dismissal.
This is what I was talking about earlier. Why send out these last few, if the decisions have not even been made yet? Surely they could wait a day or two without needlessly getting our hopes up. And to think after my CB Interview I thought I was a "Shoe in" as sooo many others were told also; some, as I've read on here, by that same exact phrase.
@Hoping
I agree a lot of that seems to be a waste of time/energy. That sounds like stuff that should ONLY be given to finalists once they have been notified. I can' t imagine why they would waste their time sending it out. It would be heartbreaking to get, too, if you don't actually get the call!
There are a lot more steps after 11. Just sayin'…and it's been published several places that even the ones who go to finals aren't sure of making it on the ranch.
@Hoping
sorry – I lumped all of that into # 10 without a lot of details. I never received the size chart email though. Thanks for letting us know. <blockquote cite="#commentbody-36975">

I've personally never made it to finals, the information I included was a friend who made it that far and that was their summation. If you have information to add then do it… instead of saying there's more….. I'm actually putting real info out there rather than saying there's a lot more……
@Hoping
I had the same e-mails that was sent to me.
it is a disappointment not making it to the finals. I felt teasted, but just because of this let down I am not going to go out and gain another 10 pounds.. with of without the show i have decided this year I am going to work harder towards a healther me.. total lost since April has been 15 pounds.. not much.. but better and a gain or staying unhealthy. 🙂
@stealth
I understand and accept the disappointment of not being chosen and started my weight loss on Saturday, but thats not the purpose I write here and tell the peeps how many more steps there really are; and ya still won't be picked.
What I dont understand is WHY they had to send out Rules on the Ranch, contracts, and want to know the size BL shirts I'll need, Shoe size, and dress size?!? This is a quick 30 second email I can easily fill out AFTER I GET THE CALL! Why send it beforehand? Why, once again, put all this hope in our heads? Isnt this process already filled enough with false hope and then dispair? I cannot come up with ANY reason for this except some kind of power trip Hollywood BS.
I know for a fact 3Ball monitors this site, I challenge any one of them to give me a good reason why they send out these emails BEFORE we get the call making us think we FINALLY made it to Finals Week. Very Cruel.

I am moving on and ready to do this!
Thank you so much.
Anyone know of anyone who actually went to Finals Week? When did they actually Leave?
Hey every one! So happy you are all here!
What did you all think of the finale?? New trainer?? I think it is a desperate reach to take on a famous trainer!
Tempted … I am with you on taking on Anna Kournikova … I know they are revamping the whole show … but I do not see what experience she has in personal training … being trained … yes … but training others? Perhaps she will prove us all wrong. 🙂
Rulon didnt work out so well and I don't think she will either…
From The Examiner
After confetti rained down on Biggest Loser season 11 winner Olivia Ward and Anna Kournikova was announced as a new Biggest Loser season 12 trainer to join Bob Harper, an NBC spokesperson confirmed to us today that Cara Castronuova and Brett Hoebel will not be back.
Brett and Cara were brought on for season 11 and were first introduced to viewers as the "mystery trainers." They worked with half of the contestants off campus, at the Biggest Loser Resort in Malibu while the other contestants trained with Harper and Jillian Michaels, who has chosen to leave the show.
What do you guys think?
@when i am thin
Personally, I am not interested in famous names for a reality show. Wether Anna will be good or not is irrelevant to me. It ruins the show that she is so well known.
And they didn't even mention Rulon… what's up with that??
@Tempted
I think it all but states he was kicked off for breaking the rules…I guess that rumor was true.
Holland posted pics of Rulon on facebook. One fan claims that once you leave the show you can't be a part of it any more, therefore, he couldn't participate in the finale.
But… why didn't they mention him, ya know?? It was just like he wasn't ever there!
If they are going to be picked up for a Season 13, CC announcements start in about a month, if they hold to last years schedule…unbelievable…
Crazy, huh??? This season went WAY late.
I have had a tough couple of weeks keeping motivated. I hate to even weigh-in tomorrow.
It did run late, but that means that those of us with the weight still to lose don't have to wait as long to audition again. I am so sorry for those of you who had negative experiences this time around.
Still trying to get things moving on my end, but like many Americans the economy has hit us hard so I am trying to make sure that I am doing everything I can to care for myself and family.
Hope all is well. God bless you all.
Is it too late to audition for Biggest loser season 12?
Yeah … season 12 started filming this last week. However, they have started casting for season 13 (I guess I should update my blog!).
Ah ok. Thank you!
@Matthew McNutt
The application still says season 12. Can I print that and send it in with my video for season 13? I'd season 13 going to be coupes again?

What I meant to say was " Is season 13 going to be couples again?" 🙂
So, I was wondering if anyone had heard from BFG since before finals….could it be? BFG are you around?
Where are the casting calls for 13?
I hope BFG made the cast. 🙂
More trainer news ….. wonder if there will be 4?
NBC's 'The Biggest Loser' has added another new face to its roster: Justin Bieber's personal trainer Dolvett Quince.
According to Us Weekly, Quince will join 'BL' vet Bob Harper and tennis pro Anna Kournikova as trainers for the fitness show's twelfth season, which is set to begin production this week.
"I couldn't be more excited about joining 'The Biggest Loser' as their newest trainer," Quince, who has also worked with Janet Jackson, told Us. "This amazing opportunity allows me to use my expertise to change lives one rep at a time, and encourage contestants — and viewers — to find strength beyond muscle."
Quince, who is based in Atlanta, not only trains Bieber, but also developed a fitness and diet plan for the teen star for his intense 'My World' tour.
The next season of 'The Biggest Loser' premieres next fall on NBC.
Hi all! Been gone for a few seasons (very active here during season 10 casting). Still struggling with my weight, still need to lose. As far as the new things happening to BL I'm not sold. As TEMPTED said, I don't care either how famous the new trainers are (or how famous cast members are)…I just would want someone that can replace Jillian (NOT going to be easy!) While I liked the BL 11 people, I didn't 'fall in love' with any of them as I have in past seasons. They seem to be looking for people with bigger and more sad 'sob' stories each season. What about the average person that has struggled ALL their life, takes care of everyone else but themselves and is ready to make a change? Someone who has NEVER had the opportunity to experience top trainers, nutritionists, and medical advice?.
I could go on and on here but will leave my comments to this. I will be around more 🙂
Just wondering if anyone else out there heard that 3Ball was suspended from Season 12 filming? I was reading that it may or may not have had something to do with the ABC show. Anyone hear or know anything?
If that is the case, that may explain why the BL casting website application is updated for 13 yet. Are they going to be part of it?
Just throwing a new discussion out there.
@Balzak75
I hadn't heard that! I wonder what it is all about? And what does that mean to the future of BL? Could make things interesting!
OH! And does that mean filming was stopped, or just that 3 ball isn't doing the filming?
And what about the contestants of 12??
Do you think that has anything to do with why casting was so different this time around? (Like they were tied up in issues of one kind or another?)
OK, read the article. Questions answered… sorta.
So, are they really starting to cast for 13 already?? I've read it more than once, but see nothing official about it.
Someone posted on Holland's facebook (Monday) that she got a callback but was too small for season 13. What is that all about?? Anyone got answers?
