I’m a sci-fi nerd

I read a lot.  It probably works out to a book every ten days or so.  Some weeks I’ll rip through a couple, sometimes it takes a month to get through two books.  Depends on how crazy my life is or how good the book is (duds take me forever to finish).  I also usually have a couple books going at the same time; typically a youth ministry related book, and either a John Grisham novel (dude is awesome) or a sci-fi book.  If you actually read all my posts, then you already know I’m working my way through a Star Wars series, Legacy of the Force.  I’m not totally feeling it, but I’ve started so now I’m committed.

Anyway, all that to say that I actually caved and joined a Science Fiction book club this morning … six books for a buck was just too enticing a startup deal, especially given that they had the latest book in the Dune series, Sandworms of Dune by Brian Herbert.  I’m excited just thinking about it.  I gotta say, that Brian Herbert has worked the Dune series to a frenzy.  His dad is the guy who wrote the original series of books, one of the biggest selling series of books in sci-fi history.  Somehow, over the last decade Herbert, jr., has managed to crank out more Dune books than his dad ever did.  Each time it’s the last one … this latest last one came out last summer.  Apparently the next trilogy of Dune books drops this summer.  It’s like a neverending tray of lasagna … heaven.

So here’s my list of six that I am anxiously anticipating …

  • FIREFLY: THE OFFICIAL COMPANION.  Yes, I’m a Firefly nerd.  That show got cancelled waaaaaay before it’s tiime.
  • SERENITY: THOSE LEFT BEHIND.  More Firefly nerdery.  I just couldn’t help myself.
  • UP TILL NOW.  William Shatner’s autobiography.  Seriously.  I already have Sulu’s, Scotty’s, Uhura’s, and Spock’s, so it’s only right that I have Captain Kirk’s.  Don’t judge me too harshly, we all have our weaknesses!
  • THE ROAD TO DUNE.  A bunch of short stories and making of stuff from the original author of Dune.
  • HEROES.  A spinoff book from the TV show???  This will hold me over until season three!
  • SANDWORMS OF DUNE.  You know it, baby.

Yes, it looks like I have some great summer reading headed my way!

  1. Re: Firefly – also go to your local comic shop and look for "Serenity: Better Days". What happens to the crew of _Serenity_ when a heist seems to go their way?
