Biggest Loser Casting Tips (season 8, page 2)

COMMENTING IS CLOSED! THIS POST GOT TOO BIG! YOU CAN CONTINUE THE CONVERSATION ON THE BIGGEST LOSER CASTING TIPS (SEASON 8, PAGE 3) BLOG POST!

Okay, casting is well on it’s way for season eight of Biggest Loser.  I’m reposting this entry to enable people to continue the conversation started here.  There’s over a couple thousand comments worth of ideas, notes, and other information, including casting directors, and former contestants (other than myself), so if you have some time it’s worth exploring.  Here are the vital links:

  • NBC has posted casting information and the application here.
  • Pete Thomas, the season 2 $100,000 winner has some of the best casting call advice out there, which you can find at www.WinningMan.com.
  • Jen Kerns, a season three contestant like myself, and a doctor for the show for seasons four and five, has also put together some fantastic casting advice that you can read here.
  • My original casting tips post with over a thousand comments worth of discussion, click here.  Stacy, Adam, Phil, Amy and Coleen were all reading and posting in the discussion there – it’s fun to look back and realize they were some of the superstars of season six!
  • My second post (fairly identical to this one), with well over two thousand comments worth of discussion, click here.
  • If you’re dealing with disappointment about not being cast, then check out my post on Biggest Loser casting disappointment.

One of the questions I hear a lot is about money … how do contestants afford to be away from home and work for months at a time?  I don’t know what it is now, but when I was a contestant there was a $500 a week stipend for cast members on the ranch.  When you received the check you could cash it and spend it, send it home, save it, whatever.  All airplane tickets, hotel accommodations, etc., for the contestants and potential cast members are taken care of by NBC, and during the casting process it self there was a $50 per diem to cover food costs.

Another question is timing; typically a season lasts for about 8-9 months.  About four of this is spent in filming; if you last all the way until the final three or four, you could be away from home for as much as four months or so.  Once the ranch filming wraps and the last few contestants are sent home, however, there is still another four or five months that all the contestants have to continue losing weight until the finale.  In addition, potential cast members are flown out to California a couple weeks before filming begins for the final round of casting, medical checkups, psychological evals, etc.  NBC brings out more people than what they need and the cast is not finalized until filming literally begins.  People have been cut at the last minute and replacements flown in with hardly any time to spare.  Nothing is in stone until it’s on camera!

When will you hear from Biggest Loser about your video?  There is no way of knowing.  I heard back a few weeks after I sent it in, but even after that it’s a big waiting game.  If you get a phone number or email from a casting direction, definitely drop them a line/call every couple weeks to find out if you’re still in the running or what’s going on.  Schedules and plans change almost every day, so it’s easy to get lost in the shuffle.  If you don’t hear back within a month I would think your video didn’t make the cut.  That doesn’t mean you can’t send in another or visit a casting call – it’s just up to you!

Finally, here’s my video application tips!  This is by no means a recipe for success; it’s based on my video application and the conversations I had with casting directors out in LA in between things.  I was pretty curious about the whole process so I was pumping them for info even after filming began.  I’m such a nerd!

  • They’ve usually decided if they’re interested in you within the first 30-60 seconds of your video, so front load it with your best stuff.  Make it interesting!  Start off with something funny or exciting!
  • Keep in mind, if you’re going to be cast, your video is going to be watched hundreds of times by producers, executives, casting directors, etc.  If it bores you or your friends the second or third time watching it … put some more time into it!
  • Special effects?  Don’t bother!  We’ve all got video editing software with all sorts of bells and whistles on our home computers, but fancy transitions are not going to sell you to people who do video editing for a living.  In fact, it can distract from who you are.  I’m a video editing nerd and I didn’t use any special effects other than putting my name and contact info on as a subtitle at the beginning.
  • Don’t bother talking about why you need to lose weight.  When I first started filming my audition video I started describing all of my health reasons for losing weight – but when I was watching it back, I realized … they don’t need to hear it!  One look at me was all they needed to know I needed to lose weight!  Show them why you need to lose it; I said I needed to lose weight for my kids, and then I followed it with a minute or two of the best footage I could find of me with wrestling with my three boys.  We probably filmed half an hour of that insanity and I grabbed the cutest, loudest, and funniest few moments for the audition video.  Your physical need to lose weight is not nearly as interesting as who or what your losing the weight for.
  • Live loud!  Reality TV is over the top, dramatic, and filled with loud personalities.  They need to see that on your video!  I wanted them to know that even though  I was morbidly obese I was up to the challenge of the crazy competitions and workouts – so I threw on a bunch of clips from my different youth group activities; me getting slimed, snowtubing, playing paintball, screaming at events, being on stage, running around … you get the idea.  Other contestants did things appropriate to their lives; Tim from Oregon had himself spinning out on his Harley, Tim from Delaware recruited his elementary school class to do things with him, Heather Hanson filmed herself running around in a sports bra all day doing her household chores and errands.  The less talking and more action you can have, the better (in my opinion)!
  • If you have footage or photos of yourself thin, include those at some point on the video.  If you can show them what your after will be, then do it!

Remember, enjoy the conversation here and know that I will never compromise your anonymity – not to NBC, 3Ball, Casting Directors or anyone.  You can post anonymously, or you can leave your names and contact information … just remember that NBC likes to be the one announcing their cast for the show, so if you start identifying yourself publicly as a finalist, you’ll probably find yourself eliminated from the casting process.  Good luck to everyone … and let me know if you make the show!  Pete Thomas has more contestants on season seven than I did and I’m bitter!  😉

  1. A moment on the lips, forever on the hips…

  2. I have been reading this site for the past few days. I now consider myself an unfortunate victom of the useless Phoenix CC. I , too, had to sit for Brandon. It was the Biggest Waste of 8 Hours of My Life! He was such an arrogant boob. I read over and over what a positive experience the CC's were, WRONG! I spent 8 hours in line just to sit and listen to fourteen other people diatribe about "obesity in America." Which…what? Sorry could not hear a thing you said b/c loud mouths or Brandon guided the conversation.
And, why bother to dress nice? A vast majority of the people there were wearing leggins and flip -flops. To those of you considering going to a CC, don't. Make your video and send it in. You will save yourself eight hours of disappointment. And at least with the video, you will have a journey of self-reflection which will hopefully be your motivation.
By the way, I 'm not bitter, I'm annoyed. Annoyed I wasted eight hours of my life. Eight hours that I could have spent making a soulful video spending time with my family.
Please, please, please people if you don't have the finincial means to attend a CC, DON'T! Make your video! The open CC's are so not worth the time and effort.

  3. Looking 2 lose it, …. haha, i was standing right accross from there hotel room. Me another coule people went into room 113 to go pee. and those boys were letting people use their bathroom too. soooo funny. what was your application number?

  4. gettingoff thecouch… where you wearing a white dress shirt?

Freshfit, I was in a dark blue dress shirt and charcoal slacks with black dress shoes. I totally should have spent more time in the lines but I had been driving for almost 20h so I just wanted to get in there and rock it out and then sleep, haha.

  6. MisQ – I can be sad for one night. I haven't eaten anything all day since I was so nervous.

It's a good quote to live by, but honestly if we all followed it, we wouldn't be reading this page. But thanks for the tip honey!

  7. I just got home after driving 6 hours back and forth today to the Phoenix casting call. WOW what an experience.

Kristin gave me a VIP – what a blessing that was! Although I will say I got a *lot* of dirty looks and negative comments from at least 15 people in line, including people in my own group over the fact that I had a VIP pass! I tried to be friendly and compliment people on their photos or give encouraging words and save for two sweet women got nothing but attitude and hateful stares back. It was sad, actually.

The actual interview didn't go as planned, but I am trying to stay optimistic. I was in Brandon's group and had the dreaded "debate" format. Although I am very outspoken by nature I could not get a word in edge-wise. There were two women in particular who dominated the conversation and cut people off, yelled over them, and basically did not let anyone else speak. I really don't know what value that format brings to Brandon but he is the professional and I'm sure he knows what he's doing.

On the drive home I started to map out my video.. =) This is my first time auditioning and although it wasn't quite the warm and fuzzy experience I envisioned it won't be my last!!

  8. Did you guys find out anymore about what season 8 is all about, or what the trainer thing is?

I would start sealing my lips after the one-on-one if you're in contact to go any further. Right now, I think the info is fair game.

    That said…

Laughsalot, you're right. The CD sounded like the speech has been said more than once so I'll share a bit. First of all, there was mention of word coming down just today of some of the things they are contemplating with the next two seasons– like a versus, as in 8 vs 9, singles vs partners– both being filmed simultaneously. Sounds pretty cool.

There was also mention of things being contemplated as far as season 12. Yes, season 12. My memory's a bit fuzzy right now but those are the things that stood out– including having a trainer assigned to you if you're eliminated from the campus.

Again, it was repeated that nothing is set in stone. These are all just things that are being contemplated and are subject to change at any moment before filming, which takes place on May 4th for 16 weeks.

  10. One of the people in my group asked Brandon if Season 8 was singles or teams and he said it was both but cautioned that teams could be split up, meaning only one person could be cast. He did not say anything about the trainer casting.

  11. daintycake, were you in a pink dress, by chance?

  13. by teams I mean couples, sorry. I've been up since 3am and have driven a total of 12 hours so I'm a little delirious 😉

  14. Spera .. I was in a coral dress, so yes – I guess that counts as pink. 🙂 WOW I guess I stood out =/

  15. daintycake… I was at the Phoenix CC as well. I actually went to the end of the line because I did not want to pass all of the other people out of fear of what you just described. One of the assistants came to the end of the line and saw my pass (when I was showing him my completed application) and he told me I belonged at the front of the line and then he escorted me alllllllllllll the way inside the doors. He was so sweet! And boy did I get looks and comments and he kept getting questioned about how to get a VIP pass. I felt bad for him but was totally thankful.

  16. Any callbacks from Houston's casting call? Got back to DFW around 1800 and have not heard anything as of yet. Not giving up hope yet, lol!! Had a great time! Met some wonderful gals, if you are lurking, and you know who you are, lol!! Ya'll were awesome!! Good luck to everyone!!

  17. I felt really bad passing them and had my VIP pass out so they knew I wasn't "cutting." One lady looked at me and the pass and said really loudly "It's people like her who ruin it for the rest of us." I looked at my husband and for a moment I wanted to jump in line with the rest of them but he reminded me that I was given that pass and it was mine to be used and he escorted me to the front of the line. I felt really bad about it though and I told as many people as possible about this blog, about emailing the casting directors to get the VIP passes, etc. I even gave my cell phone number out to one woman so she could contact me and I would give her all the info so that she could get a VIP next time. I'm trying to pay it forward. =)

  18. WOW you guys have been busy today! I have been out all day with no access to a computer and it was killing me that I couldn't be here to hear all of your good news! From the bottom of my heart I want to say CONGRATS to you all. Even if you didn't get a call back, the fact that you got out of your comfort zone and tried is AMAZING in and of itself! I truly hope that you all enjoyed yourselves today!

Budakay1- OMG that is so funny! It sounds like he may have been using a pick up line on you! Not trying to be nosey but……………………did the pick up line work? LOL! If it did that means I'm a match maker!! Make sure I get an invite to the wedding! LOL!

  19. I was in line from 7a.m to 4p.m and when we finally got in we all had a talk and decided we were going to be polite and not try to speak over each other well then they let 3 women in and they ended up saying they were at the end of the line for 10 min. and they gave them a vip pass…..
It turned into a shouting match not even a debate in my eyes i was very dissapointed….I think our group would have been better off without them not to be mean about it…and i was surpised the cd let that happen till the end…

  20. JML3783 – No word yet. Glad you had a safe trip home. I did lol. I am nervous but hopeful.

  21. how late will they make call from houston? Holland what days are you going to make calls for Call Backs?

  22. daintycake the only reason I asked is because of what happened when a girl in a pink (or coral) dress was admitted to my group. I sat to your left during the interview and was so grateful you shorted my wait 🙂 Sorry if I came across as being rude, I was so nervous by the time you got there!!

I was really upset after we got out of the call. I tried so hard to stand out, but I have a feeling that I'm not going to get a call. Trying to keep my hopes up and am not letting my phone out of my site nonetheless.

Good luck to you, and thanks for giving me fewer minutes on my feet! I got there at 7 this morning 🙂

  23. Fabulous! It was so nice to meet you! We had a great time! So, now word yet? My friend, was like, "the CD will either call you (talking to me), or Fabulous, or the both of ya'll" LOL. So no call back for either one of us, BUMMER! LOL, oh well, it's not over until I sing, lol!

  24. Telll your friend thanks and it was nice meeting you. Good luck. Some wrote earlier that they did not get a call back until late Tues of the following week, so I am hopeful. I am trusting in God and his promise.

  25. Spera – you are the one with the professional photo right? You really did have a nice picture, I meant that. =)

I did not think you were being rude, I can understand you must have been all kinds of exhausted and nervous rolled into one! I was actually referring to a couple others in the group who were pretty miffed when I joined the group, but that's okay – I guess I can understand their frustration at me just walking up after they had waited since 7am (or earlier).

I was pretty disappointed as well. After all the "prepping" I had done I was not anticipating the debate format. I am very out spoken and normally have no problem making myself heard but I just really.. could not get a word in today. There were only about two or three girls in our group who I think really got to say anything.

My husband made a great point though – it's not just about the debate. You submit a picture and the application for a reason. Brandon could have seen something in you or me in those pictures and our answers in that application, so we just have to stay positive. =)

Send in a video too, it won't hurt!!!!!!!!!!

  26. No debate at my table. Tad asked weight/how much to loose and if team partner. He spoke a little and that was that. No questions, no story, nada. real disappointing. i know they know right away but there were some lookers in my group that drove far. he should have taken more time, someone might have impressed him

  27. Fabulous, that's a great attitude to have. I was really disappointed after the casting call but my husband reminded me of the same and I've been working to shake the negativity and focus on the positive ever since.

  28. Thanks, daintycake. That's one of the few pics I have that I like.

I know which two you were referring to. One just kept talking herself in circles…talking just to talk. Frustrating.

I'm def. sending a video in. Your husband does have a good point! I'll try to keep my hopes up.

Feel free to email me at eeyorefan607 {at} yahoo {dot} com!

  29. kiki, it's possible Tad could just be going off of their presence and the information in their applications. I filled out the application posted on NBC's website and man, it's thorough. People in my group had other applications but I'm sure it was just as in-depth. Anyway, maybe Tad just goes off of gut instinct.

Personally, I feel that I'd have had a better shot at Tad's table. However, that could just be attributed to the grass being greener on other side.. 😉

  30. I am totally with you Fabulous! Ya'll have a great night! I'm off to bed, exhausted! Blog with ya'll tomorrow, lol!

  31. thanks danty. i know you are right but still he should let people talk. I think they need to change up these casting calls. I mean look they picked Joelle and she should have never had made it on

  32. I agree with you.. I think I would have preferred a table where each person got a minute to tell their "story." No one interruping them, no one talking over them, and everyone being able to be heard. I can imagine that's the least favorite for the CD though, because they must hear a lot of the same things over and over and over and over…

I find it extremely interesting to hear the different interview styles each CD has. It would be fun to know what CDs current and former contestants interviewed with … I can see Carla doing very well in Brandon's debate. 😉

  33. My CD today was Tad and I had a totally different experience than the one you describe. I think the first person at the table sets the tone. The one at my table started explaining what she does for a living as soon as he asked her weight. The next person that followed went on to do the same/similar. When it got to me I took the opportunity when he asked if I had any family as a backup who could audition with me. And so on. What I'm saying is that the people at my table looked for the opportunity to get some of their story in. He was kind, patient, and interested in what we all had to say. There was a lot of laughter and joking at my table with Tad and amongst ourselves. My nerves disappeared almost completely and I was pretty comfortable.

  34. I think everyone should have been able to tell their story. we werent given the opportunity. some cd cast off of tapes and some off of the cc i think tad must be off of tapes

    MisQ,

So did you get a callback?

  36. I was the first person, i guess i didnt take that opportunity. i tried to let him run his table. he told us to sit to his right since its rthe best seat. maybe thats why???? that sucks!

  37. applied again – around when were you seen?

  38. Applied again…yes.

Tad also took whatever we had to bring him: dvds, pictures, and/or the long application. I read that some had the experience where the CD didn't even take their picture. Tad was just a great guy.

  39. kiki…that would explain why he didn't look at my side of the table a lot while he was giving his speech. I thought we were not what he was looking for. Then when he went one by one he was attentive.

  40. yeah that sucks. he asked us a lot of questions and even came back to us. he also looked through all of our pictures right on the spot. no call 🙁

I'm not exactly sure when that was because I got lost into the stores of the mall (I have a bit of a shopping problem :)). I do know the sun was pretty high overhead so I'm guessing 12ish. Maybe 1. I know it was definitely before 3 because that's when I left from the mall.

  42. OMG!!! I was in line for over 8 hours. They asked that no one get there more than 3 hours early, so we got there right at 7am. I was #448. So if you plan on going to the open casting I would probably get there more than 3 hours earlier. The experience was amazing and I met so many people. Only problem I had was that they stuck a lady in our group that was bragging about only being in line for 10 minutes and how she got a VIP pass to the front of the line. Ok, I am not a hater but that is not fair. I had 2 hours of sleep, had been standing for 8 hours, nothing to eat or drink the whole time, and it was cold as heck. She was refreshed and ready to go.

I totally understand that it is the name of the game but to top it all off when we get into the interview it was a debate style interview. We met with Brandon and good Lord he is hott!!! Anyway, this girl would not let anyone speak. I was so annoyed. She was screaming over everyone, literally. I was upset with the turn out, however, my sister and my fate lies in Gods hands. If it is in his will for us to get through, it will happen.

    Good luck everyone!!!

After a long-long drive, we went to the Columbus CC, and had Paul as my CD! He was actually super-super rad.

I got a VIP from Rita and was a little bit scared at fist when I got put in his group, since the PA said I would be in Rita's group for sure, and then I got switched … and because everyone has said Paul was pretty hardcore and did not take pics or anything but the short form and the format was a big yelling match … and no one had heard of anyone getting a CB from him ever!

So … my CC was an open talk format, (Just name, age, job – then free for all), but he did ask people follow-ups, and seemed to pay attention to who was making the most real sense and not just yelling. You could tell he sort of focused on whoever gave the best (not loudest!) answer for a few seconds. He even actually adressed me a few times directly, and that was super awesome!

He also took whatever pics and stuff we brought and asked us to leave what we wanted him to keep on top of our form – not like what was said before on here about him not taking pics. He is definitely not brutal like some people on the board were saying earlier, and he was very cool to everyone and very positive and funny!

There was also one lady in our group that just yelled over everyone and had sort of a diva complex! We all wanted to tell to shut her trap … she tried very hard to dominate the group at all times.

Paul also mentioned that just because you are loud and proud and yell over everyone doesn't mean you're going to get on the show – and that he keeps trying to tell people that, but there are always those kind of people in some of the groups! He said just to say what you think and he will hear you, even among the chaos!

Anyway, if that's how your CC is, make sure to make what you say count and express your real views, and not just try to yell over everyone non-stop just so no one else can talk!

Moral of the story … if you get Paul don't be scared he is very cool, and I think he's just trying to see how people interact in groups … because you can defiinitely tell a lot about some people just from that!

Talking with a few cool people afterwards, we already had some thoughts of our own on that one lady, ha ha! It was fun and I am so gald I did it!!!!

  45. The Phoenix auditions were crazy, I am sure there were well over 1300 people there at the end of the day.

I got there at 12 and was #799. The group I was in had numbers in the 300s and had gotten there at 7am!!!

~~ Also, a Reminder in case anyone forgot~~~

I know it's about 12:30 Eastern time right now, but don't forget to set your clocks ahead 1 hr. Don't want anyone being late for church tomorrow (for those who go). 🙂

I thought Brandon was great and the debate format he used was excellent! Only the strong survive! You have to speak up and LIVE LOUD! If you get ran all over in a casting call, what can they expect from you on the ranch… but to get ran all over and be somewhere balling your eyes out! Let's get real people!

  50. hey guys! glad all the callbacks went good <3
no callback here…sadness! lol! Nah, I had a great time, I was in the FIRST group in Miami with my VIP pass, but didn't really get to talk much, just said my name/weight/how much I want to lose, and that I had a family member to lose weight…that was about it…I do wish I could have said more, but it was the beginning of a busy day, and Tad was more than nice at my table, just wish we had more time, lol!

Again, thanks to all for the help and support- I hope you guys make it all the way <3 <3 <3
