Biggest Loser casting tips (season 10)

Casting has begun for season TEN of Biggest Loser. Can you imagine? ย Here are some links with some great casting advice, followed by some of my own advice based on my experience getting on to season three of Biggest Loser (still the best season in my opinion!!!):

  • NBC has posted casting information and the application here. ย You can download the application for season ten here.
  • Pete Thomas, the season 2 $100,000 winner has some of the best casting call advice out there, which you can find at his website, Winning Man.
  • Jen Kerns, a season three contestant like myself, and a doctor for the show for seasons four and five, has also put together some fantastic casting advice that you can read here.
  • Holland, a casting director for Biggest Loser sent me a bunch of great advice on how to be casted, you can find itย here. ย She updated them October, 2009.
  • I’ve been posting these casting tips for the last few seasons and they always seem to end up with thousands of comments; just about every season has contestants that were hanging out on here, reading and giving each other thoughts and advice. ย You can find the most reason one here.
  • If youโ€™re dealing with disappointment about not being cast, then check out my post on Biggest Loser casting disappointment.

One of the questions I hear a lot is about money โ€ฆ how do contestants afford to be away from home and work for months at a time? I donโ€™t know what it is now, but when I was a contestant there was a $500 a week stipend for cast members on the ranch. When you received the check you could cash it and spend it, send it home, save it, whatever. All airplane tickets, hotel accommodations, etc., for the contestants and potential cast members are taken care of by NBC, and during the casting process it self there was a $50 per diem to cover food costs.

Another question is timing; typically a season lasts for about 8-9 months. About four of this is spent in filming; if you last all the way until the final three or four, you could be away from home for as much as four months or so. Once the ranch filming wraps and the last few contestants are sent home, however, there is still another four or five months that all the contestants have to continue losing weight until the finale. In addition, potential cast members are flown out to California a couple weeks before filming begins for the final round of casting, medical checkups, psychological evals, etc. NBC brings out more people than what they need and the cast is not finalized until filming literally begins. People have been cut at the last minute and replacements flown in with hardly any time to spare. Nothing is in stone until itโ€™s on camera!

When will you hear from Biggest Loser about your video? There is no way of knowing. I heard back a few weeks after I sent it in, but even after that itโ€™s a big waiting game. If you get a phone number or email from a casting direction, definitely drop them a line/call every couple weeks to find out if youโ€™re still in the running or whatโ€™s going on. Schedules and plans change almost every day, so itโ€™s easy to get lost in the shuffle. If you donโ€™t hear back within a month I would think your video didnโ€™t make the cut. That doesnโ€™t mean you canโ€™t send in another or visit a casting call โ€“ itโ€™s just up to you!

Finally, hereโ€™s my video application tips! This is by no means a recipe for success; itโ€™s based on my video application and the conversations I had with casting directors out in LA in between things. I was pretty curious about the whole process so I was pumping them for info even after filming began. Iโ€™m such a nerd!

  • Theyโ€™ve usually decided if theyโ€™re interested in you within the first 30-60 seconds of your video, so front load it with your best stuff. Make it interesting! Start off with something funny or exciting!
  • Keep in mind, if youโ€™re going to be cast, your video is going to be watched hundreds of times by producers, executives, casting directors, etc. If it bores you or your friends the second or third time watching it โ€ฆ put some more time into it!
  • Special effects? Donโ€™t bother! Weโ€™ve all got video editing software with all sorts of bells and whistles on our home computers, but fancy transitions are not going to sell you to people who do video editing for a living. In fact, it can distract from who you are. Iโ€™m a video editing nerd and I didnโ€™t use any special effects other than putting my name and contact info on as a subtitle at the beginning.
  • Donโ€™t bother talking about why you need to lose weight. When I first started filming my audition video I started describing all of my health reasons for losing weight โ€“ but when I was watching it back, I realized โ€ฆ they donโ€™t need to hear it! One look at me was all they needed to know I needed to lose weight! Show them why you need to lose it; I said I needed to lose weight for my kids, and then I followed it with a minute or two of the best footage I could find of me with wrestling with my three boys. We probably filmed half an hour of that insanity and I grabbed the cutest, loudest, and funniest few moments for the audition video. Your physical need to lose weight is not nearly as interesting as who or what your losing the weight for.
  • Live loud! Reality TV is over the top, dramatic, and filled with loud personalities. They need to see that on your video! I wanted them to know that even though I was morbidly obese I was up to the challenge of the crazy competitions and workouts โ€“ so I threw on a bunch of clips from my different youth group activities; me getting slimed, snowtubing, playing paintball, screaming at events, being on stage, running around โ€ฆ you get the idea. Other contestants did things appropriate to their lives; Tim from Oregon had himself spinning out on his Harley, Tim from Delaware recruited his elementary school class to do things with him, Heather Hanson filmed herself running around in a sports bra all day doing her household chores and errands. The less talking and more action you can have, the better (in my opinion)!
  • If you have footage or photos of yourself thin, include those at some point on the video. If you can show them what your after will be, then do it!

Remember, enjoy the conversation here and know that I will never compromise your anonymity โ€“ not to NBC, 3Ball, Casting Directors or anyone. You can post anonymously, or you can leave your names and contact information โ€ฆ just remember that NBC likes to be the one announcing their cast for the show, so if you start identifying yourself publicly as a finalist, youโ€™ll probably find yourself eliminated from the casting process. Be aware that casting directors do check in at my blog to see what people are saying, get a feel for what questions are going on out there, and sometimes to give us updates. Good luck to everyone โ€ฆ and let me know if you make the show! I get a kick out of hearing about the different contestants that have hung out on my blog before making the show! ;)

kiwi :@Busy And you got the email stating it was rcvd?

    Nope.

  4. @dyingtoknow

None yet. I am holding on to yet.

  5. Ok ya'll.. so why is it i can start and stop the process of losing weight but without fail I hit that invisible wall and then I give up on myself. I think today I am having a self reflection moment and I am not really liking the person that is looking back. It isn't that I am not liking "me" because I love me. It is that my representive looking me in the mirror isn't who I feel like I am deep down.. This probably doesn't make sense but I am using this blog to verbalize my thoughts.. HAHA Wish me luck!!!

  6. @jepsyba

I've had those moments too ! Keep going! Don't give up ! Good Luck !

  7. So I just found out that I am joining the rainks of unemployeed teachers at the end of this school year.

I am not good enough for the biggest loser. I will be unemployeed in a month. It makes a person feel like a big pile of dirt.

I hate that people have controll over your life and make decisions for you.

For those of you that are religious my faith is really poor at the moment.

I hope you all are having a better day than I am!!

  8. I am sure they have not watched my video. I emailed the link on April 7th. And my video has not been watched by anyone from California since that time.

    How frustrating!!!

  9. @My Time!!

It's never that you are not good enough for biggest loser. You could be perfect for the show but with the 250,000 that apply so are a lot of others…which means that a lot of people get lost the mix of it all. They look for specific casts and people with specific angles. You are probably more than good enough for biggest loser.

And getting laid off is no reason to feel like dirt. You are amazing because you are a teacher. It's horrible how the first cut to our economy goes to education. The teachers affected by it are some of the most wonderful people in the world. I know your faith is shaking right now, I've been there, but if faith is what gets us in these precarious situations then faith is the only thing that can get us out. Don't let go after God has only taken you half way. Stay the course and he'll take you to the finish line.

  10. @My Time!!

My Time, please don't say you're not good enough! I've been on this site since January and I always feel happy when I read your blogs. YOU ARE GOOD enough and don't forget that!!!!!

I am so sorry about your job, I know that they are laying off or asking for early retirement in my state also. It's so hard, you train to be something special and then you lose your position. We really need good teachers who care!

I understand about your faith being low right now, because I feel the same lately, why didn't I at least get a callback. You know that they can't really get to know you sometimes from a video, because we don't know what they're looking for. I will pray for you and hope that things get better in your life. Maybe a cc for season 11 will be close enough for you to get a chance. I'm hoping that!

Anyway, love and best wishes to you!

  11. I have had two VIP passes in three seasons. My videos are awesome. I think I am done trying for this.

    Have a great weekend all.

  12. Have the season 10 contestants been chosen already?

  13. Oh no! I'm out of the running. Good luck to everyone else!!!! This is the email I got:

    Hello,

The Biggest Loser Casting Team would like to thank you personally for sharing your incredible and inspiring stories with us. Unfortunately you have not been chosen as a finalist this season. We really appreciate all of the hard work and effort you put into this experience and we had a blast meeting all of you during the process.

Biggest Loser is not going anywhere so please keep an eye out for future castings! We would love to see you back in the action next season and hope that you feel the same way. We hope that with or without our help you go on to achieve each and every one of your weight loss goals! Let this be the start of your weight loss journey and not the end.

    Sincerely,

    The Biggest Loser Casting Team

Yes, I got that too. Disappointing, but it is cool to have gotten that far. Motivating? I hope so. Good luck everyone else!

I received the same letter about 30 minutes ago. But…I'm not going to let it get me down!!! I know I can do it on my own. I have the will within me to keep pressing on, and family and friends who will support me.

Best of luck to everyone moving forward!!

I'm sorry to hear about your disappointments… but I know that God has something better in store for you. You are a good person who dedicates their life to improving the lives of children and you will be rewarded. Like the poem/story Footprints… during this time more than ever God is carrying you and taking care of you! And not to get too preachy… when one door closes another opens… I just hope that this door is amazing for you and your family ๐Ÿ™‚

I must say I am so sorry to all that are in the same boat with me, in being so disappointed.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but to all that have not heard anything, I really think it is over for the majority of us.

I found the following post on Holland's facebook minutes ago and although I feel it could have gone a bit further with information, this is all Holland writes.

    "Holland "Master Caster" Striplin

Hi Everyone! Hope everyone isn't going too crazy! It's been a madhouse around here and we're ready to try and relax this weekend! Happy Weekend!!

I was let down also but I got a letter last week telling me to get a Drs appointment and be ready to go on the 30th my letter was the same above except it told me to cancell the Dr appointment…….. wow what a let down….

  22. AS close as it gets. Avatar
    AS close as it gets.

yeah I went to cc had cb told moving up in process background/bio more pics , additionl questions longer video sent an email Telling me I was still in process and make a Drs Appointment days I was to go, date I was gonna be told…. everything BUT your going until tonight I am sick…… I will never do this process again it is horrible ans I can see why people dont do it once they get this far I was so certain I made it . it would have been tough leaving the family anyway so there Loss……..

  23. Hello – Yes, I went to a CC, got a CB. I got a BIO/Longer Video request. After that, I got an "additional questions" request.

I'm trying so hard not to shame spiral this weekend. I never put too much stock in making it to the ranch – I've had a lot of let downs lately, but I'm trying to stay in control.

@one email away – geez, that's terrible. My heart goes out to you.

  24. I got the same email…poop.

  25. It seems like the CDs are really trying hard to communicate standings in the casting process via email this time around. Any thoughts as to whether or not someone is still in the running if they were emailed for a long video/bio/forms and it was picked up at the PO Box on the 12th and still have not heard anything? Any chance?

I'm so confused… I've never heard of them treating potential contestants so horribly… I wonder if they just got news from NBC to change everything and choose different people.

so bizarre… so sorry to hear your news!!!

anyone who is still in the process out there??

  27. I will be MY Biggest Avatar

I got the email too :'(

I went to a casting call, got a call back, sent in a long video, then sent in a bio, background, additional questions, and some pictures. Then I got an email telling me to make a doctor's appointment for next week because I was being considered and if I was a finalist I would need that appointment but if I didn't get contacted this weekend to go ahead and cancel it. Then today's email.

Sure, I'm bummed, but I never expected this to happen. They tell you it's a lottery because it is. I'm sure I am just as good as the people they will cast..but I may not have the angle they're looking for. It's television, keep that it mind. Your struggles only matter if they can put them together with a cast and make it exciting on TV. Even though I didn't get chosen I'm still going to lose the weight. My personal goal is to MATCH the weight loss of a contestant who is about my size at how much they've lost when they leave the ranch (if they're in the final 4) or when they do the "where are they now"…if that makes sense. Not when they're at at the finale… that is not realistic. I will continue this journey and i will succeed.

I would love to have a "weigh in" buddy that will check in with me every week, and vise a versa. Someone who is SERIOUS about doing this. I am willing to do it over the phone, online, or in person. I am in Utah right now, let me know if you're interested. We will literally weigh in every week, check up on struggles and how we can overcome them, and have someone who really understands where we are coming from.

Every single one of us can do this, Biggest Loser has proved that time and time again. So lets do something about it…this is OUR time.

And…I don't want to burst anyone's bubble…but from the way this process went and what I have heard from others…I REALLY think this is going to end up as a couples season. Don't quote me on that…those are just my thoughts.

Best of luck to those still in the running. I feel SO much better because my stress and worry and anxiety is gone. I can finally get started on the weight loss!!!!!

  28. I am so sorry everyone. They must have changed the theme. That happens, so I hear.

The fact that you made it so far shows that you must have something special that stands out. That is wonderful to have been noticed out of the thousands.

I know it is a let-down. I didn't even get to the Dr. Appt. stage and I went through a little sad spurt. If we weren't dreaming of this, we would not have applied. So, know we are all here to support each other and we can change our lives on our own. It will be hard, but if we were willing to get our butts beat at the ranch, we can do it on our own. A little walk here, smaller portions there….

I will talk to my family. If they were willing to let me leave for 4 months, maybe they can allow me some "me" time to exercise. I deserve it. They want me around, don't they?

I have to say, I have learned a lot about myself while making the videos. I realized I am important and I have some special qualities. I have always felt I had to prove myself worthy, but I am worthy and only have to prove to myself that I can change- for me! I have come through a lot and have become a strong, confident woman. I am proud of myself. We all should be proud of ourselves. We put ourselves out there and were willing to open up to people we don't know. There is a lot to be said for that.

  29. I went to a CC For BL8 in Feb 08, Made a tape and sent it in March 08, Heard absolutely nothing until Aug 08 out of the blue. They were casting for BL9 but I was applying as an individual so they put me aside for BL10. Got a VIP for CC for BL10, got a CB, turned in Bio/Background/Pics/etc… , got an email for additional footage, waited 2 weeks, and then got the email tonight saying my journey had come to an end. I never received the email though about making a Dr's appt. This definitely been a long and emotionally draining process. I will admit that I have learned a lot about myself and I know that my weight loss journey is not over and by the time the BL10 finale arrives in December, I will have the weight off. I am DETERMINED!!! We can do anything we put our minds to. And like Amanda A. said on BL8… "Nothing tastes as good as being thin feels", I want to experience that! Off I go! My journey starts NOW.

    -Determined and pressing onward ๐Ÿ™‚

  30. Did anyone here who received the letter, have Rita as their Casting Director?

  31. @I Will Be My Biggest Loser

I totally agree with you about the anxiety being gone. It's like a burden has been lifted to at least know something!!

I got the email on my way home from a night out with my husband. We had a moment of shock, we cried, and then we prayed and thanked God for the answer that He had given us. There is a reason for everything and yes, it IS hard to get a rejection letter when you have worked so hard for something, but that is where we just have to sit back and trust that God has something else for us, and He is going to give us the willpower to do it on our own. 250,000 to 16 – crazy odds!

Romans 8:28 says "And we know that in ALL things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose."

I am resting on that promise tonight.

Keep truckin y'all! One day at a time, 100's of small victories turn into a lifetime of change.

I've always been the one to be proud of everyone else. Now it's my turn to be proud of myself.

    -D

  32. Would anyone be interested in a Facebook group/network of BL10 hopefuls that made it made it past the premliminary steps of the casting process only to be rejected before making it to the ranch? I know we are all soaring with energy from our disappointment and have strong plans to make weightloss a priority in our life. how great would it be to have a group of people to share ideas, trials and triumps? Also, this group knows and understands what an emotional ride it has been over the last two months.

Let me know if you'd participate in a group like this!

  38. @not a BL

I think your page is a great idea. I may be by in a little bit. For now, I honestly have spent SOOO much time on FB, Twitter, and Holland's Casting Page these last few weeks, that if I would have gone to the gym in the time that I was surfing the web and seeing what everyone else was doing, I would have spent hours there, and probably already be down 30lbs. I have been excessively lurking and focusing on this thing so much that I seriously need to have my lap top and iPhone confiscated! ๐Ÿ™‚ I think support groups are a fabulous idea, but for now I personally need to "detox" from this. I added your URL to my favorites list so I will be sure to come by and join the group after the BL10 finals/sequester/confirmed cast is complete.

Blessings and see ya soon! Determined @–>—-

  39. I guess we could wait on the Facebook until the season has been cast in case there are any last minute changes(still hoping). Isn't that what happened to a few past BL contestants?

  40. Hey Everyone!!

Yep, I got the email too ! I hope everyone is not too bummed but I know it is a major disappointment. This is my fifth time !! (I must be crazy). I've been to four casting calls total. I received a callback everytime and I've been pitched all four times and then a big rejection. One season they called me and gave me 24 hours to find a partner and I did and nothing. I didn't intend on applying this season but I got another email and decided what the heck. I'll go for it !

Honestly, all of us are more than good enough to be casted but we do not need to be on the show to lose the weight. We all have what it takes to reach our goals so let's just do it !

    Good Luck !

  41. @My Time!!

    Praying for you!

I know it probably doesn't help, but you make a lot of us smile just by reading your posts. I know you've helped me through some tough days and I thank you for that.

It's hard to lose your job and have to look for a new one, but even harder when your confidence level is down below your ankles and you don't have the energy to even start looking.

We are all here for you the best we can be. Don't forget that. ๐Ÿ™‚

  42. To everyone who has applied and is really upset, I would like to say that you have to remember this is an audition. Don't take it personally. Like actors, we go audition they try and pick the cast that people are going want to root for on TV. I am sure most of us are those people. Unfortunately, thousands of people around the country are up for those roles. I have a friend who is an actor and he went up for a role as a cop and they told he looked too much like a cop….hellloooooo wouldn't that make him a believable character. And all the roles he has played on TV and movies basically are cops or military.

Most of the contestants try out several times. This is the fourth time I have been in the process and I will say this is the first time I ever got an email saying I am sorry you were not picked. I think that was better than having us all sitting and waiting because the dates are always changing.

I can say for certain I will not be able to apply for BL11. I am about 240 and was told last season and this season I didn't "look" like I weighed that much and that I didn't "look" big enough. Unfortunately I am. I took pictures of me pushing it all out and was horrified to send them. But, thank goodness I am strong like bull and supposedly that muscle will help burn the fat.

I am going to get the where did all the fat go and 6 weeks to a healthier you. I excercise but my food is horrible! So I am going to work on that. I wish you all the best of luck and please if you are that overweight and try to lose it then go to a casting call this summer it can't hurt. GOOD LUCK!

p.s. I told my husband with some of our tax return I would go to the UTAH ranch…I just may have to check it out.

@giving it one last go….you know who I am and I will keep in touch girlie!

Hey girlie, we're Facebook friends right? I have an issue of not looking fat enough but at 250lbs I definitely am too. ๐Ÿ™‚ And it's the same problem here, exercise almost daily (at least an hour of cardio 5x a week) but the food is the issue, plus I don't do strength exercises– yet. I've purchased the Jillian 30-Day Shred. Now, let's see if I crack open the DVD.

And guys, an email telling you you didn't make it is actually a godsend. When I auditioned for season 8, not knowing was HORRIBLE. These TBL cds are different from most casting directors; they've been communicating to all of us contestants which is something they DON'T have to do. I know it hurts, during my season 8 casting it hurt like h e l l.

Wish I can do that UTAH ranch next year but I gotta use that tax money for a move.

Shoot, if it's changed to couples, I've got the partner unless they're looking for relatives.

  45. I'd actually prefer less contact about the process. I know everyone seems to be grateful these casting directors keep everybody in the loop, but I think it makes things worse when you don't get selected.

Has anyone ever applied for another TV show with a different casting company to compare their experience too?

  46. Anyone having a problem getting on Facebook today? I have barely been able to get on there all day. No problems with any other websites though.

  47. I'm really happy for all of you that have had some type of contact with BL, I didn't even get the email that says you are not the biggest loser. My son made me a cd that has the biggest loser theme on it for when we tried to get to OKC. Since we had to turn around due to the weather, I still listen to it to get inspiration, especially when I walk my dog, Sophie. (My family is kind of sick of it by now). They just don't get it!

So happiness to all of us, and we may be down right now, but we're not out!!!

I am really motivated by all of your stories!

I applied for Jillian's show through Casting Duo. I put my info on their website and was emailed and asked to go to a cc that I couldn't make. I had to send in a video and application. The ap was specific about not posting stuff on social sites or talking about the process too much up until casting. That was nice since it was spelled out. I had emailed a question or two and they were very nice about communication. Then I submitted the video on YouTube and I didn't think about it at all. I just went on with my normal life. I read on their Facebook that the casting was over and that was fine. At least I was noticed which was a compliment!! It wasn't stressful at all and they were nice. Over all, dealing with casting directors has been a positive experience for me for both shows……Except I am still waiting for my call for BL10…LOL!!!hahahaha Off to my life. Have a wonderful day.

    I'm from Northeast Ohio.

Maybe we have workout buddies in here and don't even know it.
