Casting has begun for season TEN of Biggest Loser. Can you imagine? Here are some links with some great casting advice, followed by some of my own advice based on my experience getting on to season three of Biggest Loser (still the best season in my opinion!!!):
- NBC has posted casting information and the application here. You can download the application for season ten here.
- Pete Thomas, the season 2 $100,000 winner has some of the best casting call advice out there, which you can find at his website, Winning Man.
- Jen Kerns, a season three contestant like myself, and a doctor for the show for seasons four and five, has also put together some fantastic casting advice that you can read here.
- Holland, a casting director for Biggest Loser sent me a bunch of great advice on how to be casted, you can find it here. She updated them October, 2009.
- I’ve been posting these casting tips for the last few seasons and they always seem to end up with thousands of comments; just about every season has contestants that were hanging out on here, reading and giving each other thoughts and advice. You can find the most reason one here.
- If you’re dealing with disappointment about not being cast, then check out my post on Biggest Loser casting disappointment.
One of the questions I hear a lot is about money … how do contestants afford to be away from home and work for months at a time? I don’t know what it is now, but when I was a contestant there was a $500 a week stipend for cast members on the ranch. When you received the check you could cash it and spend it, send it home, save it, whatever. All airplane tickets, hotel accommodations, etc., for the contestants and potential cast members are taken care of by NBC, and during the casting process it self there was a $50 per diem to cover food costs.
Another question is timing; typically a season lasts for about 8-9 months. About four of this is spent in filming; if you last all the way until the final three or four, you could be away from home for as much as four months or so. Once the ranch filming wraps and the last few contestants are sent home, however, there is still another four or five months that all the contestants have to continue losing weight until the finale. In addition, potential cast members are flown out to California a couple weeks before filming begins for the final round of casting, medical checkups, psychological evals, etc. NBC brings out more people than what they need and the cast is not finalized until filming literally begins. People have been cut at the last minute and replacements flown in with hardly any time to spare. Nothing is in stone until it’s on camera!
When will you hear from Biggest Loser about your video? There is no way of knowing. I heard back a few weeks after I sent it in, but even after that it’s a big waiting game. If you get a phone number or email from a casting direction, definitely drop them a line/call every couple weeks to find out if you’re still in the running or what’s going on. Schedules and plans change almost every day, so it’s easy to get lost in the shuffle. If you don’t hear back within a month I would think your video didn’t make the cut. That doesn’t mean you can’t send in another or visit a casting call – it’s just up to you!
Finally, here’s my video application tips! This is by no means a recipe for success; it’s based on my video application and the conversations I had with casting directors out in LA in between things. I was pretty curious about the whole process so I was pumping them for info even after filming began. I’m such a nerd!
-
They’ve usually decided if they’re interested in you within the first 30-60 seconds of your video, so front load it with your best stuff. Make it interesting! Start off with something funny or exciting!
-
Keep in mind, if you’re going to be cast, your video is going to be watched hundreds of times by producers, executives, casting directors, etc. If it bores you or your friends the second or third time watching it … put some more time into it!
-
Special effects? Don’t bother! We’ve all got video editing software with all sorts of bells and whistles on our home computers, but fancy transitions are not going to sell you to people who do video editing for a living. In fact, it can distract from who you are. I’m a video editing nerd and I didn’t use any special effects other than putting my name and contact info on as a subtitle at the beginning.
-
Don’t bother talking about why you need to lose weight. When I first started filming my audition video I started describing all of my health reasons for losing weight – but when I was watching it back, I realized … they don’t need to hear it! One look at me was all they needed to know I needed to lose weight! Show them why you need to lose it; I said I needed to lose weight for my kids, and then I followed it with a minute or two of the best footage I could find of me with wrestling with my three boys. We probably filmed half an hour of that insanity and I grabbed the cutest, loudest, and funniest few moments for the audition video. Your physical need to lose weight is not nearly as interesting as who or what your losing the weight for.
-
Live loud! Reality TV is over the top, dramatic, and filled with loud personalities. They need to see that on your video! I wanted them to know that even though I was morbidly obese I was up to the challenge of the crazy competitions and workouts – so I threw on a bunch of clips from my different youth group activities; me getting slimed, snowtubing, playing paintball, screaming at events, being on stage, running around … you get the idea. Other contestants did things appropriate to their lives; Tim from Oregon had himself spinning out on his Harley, Tim from Delaware recruited his elementary school class to do things with him, Heather Hanson filmed herself running around in a sports bra all day doing her household chores and errands. The less talking and more action you can have, the better (in my opinion)!
-
If you have footage or photos of yourself thin, include those at some point on the video. If you can show them what your after will be, then do it!
Remember, enjoy the conversation here and know that I will never compromise your anonymity – not to NBC, 3Ball, Casting Directors or anyone. You can post anonymously, or you can leave your names and contact information … just remember that NBC likes to be the one announcing their cast for the show, so if you start identifying yourself publicly as a finalist, you’ll probably find yourself eliminated from the casting process. Be aware that casting directors do check in at my blog to see what people are saying, get a feel for what questions are going on out there, and sometimes to give us updates. Good luck to everyone … and let me know if you make the show! I get a kick out of hearing about the different contestants that have hung out on my blog before making the show! ![]()

Me too!!! I live in Boston 🙂

WOW! I just read Biggest Loser's book 6 Weeks to a Healthier You. There are some ingredients in those recipes I've never heard of. I am wondering what the cost of some of these items are? Although I added up how much my husband and I spend on food now a month and I'm sure it can't be much more. Has anyone tried the plan in this book?
im from wisconsin…would LOVE a buddy !!! Have people taken down their youtube videos?
Whatever happened to the DWONGU guy? I noticed his video isn't on YouTube anymore. I can't imagine he didn't make it through… How exciting!?!?
I figured he made it too. He just dropped off you tube and this blog.
I read Ali Vincent's book this weekend and it mentionied she was an athlete nefore too. (swimming). This season Sunshine was a swimmer too. They seem to pick quite a few people who were athletes previously.
oops before
@shymomma – WOW – Yeah, I was wondering about @dwongu too. I bet you guys are right. He is fantastic! (He gave me a bunch of pointers for my video.) I got my email on Friday too. If he made it, I won't feel as bad about not making it… He was in a different league!
@eyes of blue – I'm in Davenport!
I dont think thecasting directors are being honest with us. I posted my video and emailed the link and got the email confirmation. It has not bee watched by the casting directors at all. You can see what regions/states from which people watch your video. There is not one single view from California. I dont know if they look at your pics first and then decide to watch your video or what but the casting director did not watch my video at all. I believe they just give us alot of fluff.
Sorry for the poor gramar I am just a little annoyed!
@normalnorah
Well if you try for it next season, maybe we could share transportation costs. Look at me, still hoping for bl to save me!
On the biggest loser casting page it says the deadline for home tapes is April 30th.

"3. MAKE A VIDEOTAPE (only DVD, MINI DV, or YOUTUBE LINK will be accepted). Click here for instructions on what to include in your tape. The home tape deadline is April 30th, 2010."
Strangely enough, if you click on the link for instructions it still reads "DEADLINE: Friday April 12, 2010". I wonder what that means???

Maybe, all the people that talked too much are starting to get kicked out.

I’d actually prefer less contact about the process. I know everyone seems to be grateful these casting directors keep everybody in the loop, but I think it makes things worse when you don’t get selected.
Has anyone ever applied for another TV show with a different casting company to compare their experience too?
I've been contacted for 2 weightloss shows before which were cast by different people. I always got right up until the medical release papers. Was told I'll be notified when to make a doctor's appt. The calls never came, guess I wasn't what they were looking for. Well, in all honesty, I think it was because I had an umbilical hernia at the time (had it since Feb 2006). I just had surgery for it in December 2009. Don't know what I was so scared about. So I'm 90% sure that was the reason for both. But both of those times were a fill it and forget it situation. I didn't stress at all about them. I don't know what it is about Biggest Loser. Maybe it's because I know what it's about, what should come out of it whereas the other two were new untitled shows and I had no idea what was going on. As usual, there was virtually no communication until they needed something, then nothing. I really appreciated the communication and updates this season b/c not knowing reeeeeally sucks.
@Girl Scout Thin Mint Cookie Blizzard Lover
That is a very real possibility. I know I tried to warn people. I wonder if it really did switch to couples though or was that just a rumor?
I think we won't really know until Holland says it's over. I'm just keeping everything crossed. I hope they are looking for a special education teacher who has had two miscarriages and would love the opportunity to help change lives and have a child with my husband that I waited nearly 40 years to find. WOW! That was one giant run on sentence. 🙂
Hi All,
Thanks for the support and kind wishes. Unfortunately, I too got dropped over the weekend after making it through the various background, bio, doc rounds, etc… I have a feeling it came down to not being "fat enough". By the time of my interview, I really only had about 110 to lose, just at the minimum threshold.
So, the first thing my wife and I did was re-join a gym. Life is to short to wait around and look to a tv show to solve my problems. First day of "perfect" eating was tough, and first day of cardio was humiliating, but it gets easier. I'm already feeling great! Luckily my wife is just as psyched to get back in shape, so we are doing it together.
I can't lie, I was actually pretty relieved to get "dumped". Our business is really starting to take off, and the uncertainty and inability to plan on the ranch (or not) was starting to take its toll on my staff. I would have loved worked with Bob, Jillian, and Dr. H – but I'm already back in high gear.
Eat well, sleep well, work hard, my friends. Best of luck to you and all of your endeavors!
DWONGU! (aka Steve)
They extend the deadline every season. Do you really think they get many more tapes? If so, how bad do those people want to be on the show if they couldn't get it together for the original date?!!! And of those, how many could possibly be a the right fit?!! 🙂
With so many applicants I have a hard time believing they couldn't put a perfectly AWESOME cast together with what they already have!
Did anyone notice that Ali (not Alison Sweeney) twitted that they are looking for young girls from 18 to 25 to send in videos.
I still have not rcvd anything…..not sure if they are still sending the emails saying to take your video's down.
Good Luck to you Steve….I figured you had to have been moving along in the process. I lived in Sisters for a while and still love central Oregon.
@dwongu
Oh my word, I am so surprised they "dumped" you, as you called it.
I had noticed several days ago, you had made your YouTube video private, so, of course I assumed you were moving right along to the Ranch. My decision was to not mention it at the time, on here, in hope that not too many people would notice it gone.
I am thrilled with the way your life is going, but I must mention the sadness for us, not to be able to share in your journey. Of course, that is sounding extremely selfish of me to say, but I hope you realize I wouldn't want that at your expense.
My thoughts and prayers go out to you and your wife for an amazing future, of which I feel certain you will have.
Keep moving.

1. Holland "Master Caster" Striplin Sorry we've been away everyone…we really needed the weekend to clear our heads and decompress! Right now is critical decision making time so we may not be posting much for a few days! Have a great week!!

2. Holland "Master Caster" Striplin FYI, if you didn't notice on the website…the deadline for HT's has been extended to April 30th so if you were a late-comer and didn't get your tape/video link in before the previous deadline then there is still hope…sorry to all that have been waiting…we had a lot more tapes to come in so we are still watching 🙂

3. Holland "Master Caster" Striplin p.s. my page had over 21,000 hits in the last week 🙂 Thanks to all the positive people on here!!! Again, please use this page for receiving updates from us, etc. I'm not a fan of the constant self promotion on here/spamming the page…and I especially don't like it when people are being negative. Most of you are g…reat at supporting others and that's fine…just keep the spamming away 🙂

In case your original submission never got into their hands, I think you ought to consider sending in an email with all your stuff in it (prior to the extended deadline of the 30th), to "thebiggestlosercasting@gmail.com".
I can't remember whether you sent your original submission by mail or by email.
Remember, stranger things have happened. Brinks trucks have had doors fly open and money fall out. Maybe, your package fell out of the mail truck and has blown all over Los Angeles and now all the residents there have seen your video and can't wait to see you on the show in Sept. Stranger things have happened.
As far as email goes, maybe they know they sent you an email asking for more info., but for whatever reason you never got it, or maybe they never got your emailed submission. Stranger things have happened in this world. Your video may still be blowing around Los Angeles, exciting their residents. Or, it may have just been put in the wrong PO Box. With the Post Office involved, ANYTHING, and I mean ANYTHING can and most likely will, go wrong.
Don't always wonder, RE-SUBMIT, NOW!

Who are you other 2 people out here?
If you don't speak up soon, I'm going to bed…

Hey everyone.. My sister just informed me of this article and some may have already viewed it but if you haven't… Please read it!!! I think that with all the crazy roller coaster riding we have done (Funny that we can fit on an emotional roller coaster just fine??!!) this put things back into perspective for me…. I needed to read this story and I hope it has a positive impact for others.
@jepsyba
Thanks. Good article.
@jepsyba Great Article !
has anyone else received a request from Holland to be added as a contact on Linkedin or on Twitter saying that BLCasting searched for your email? my twitter is private but I got an email saying that they searched for my email and so I should make it public for people searching for me.
I really believe that it means nothing and am assuming they are searching for anyone they have an email for purely as a networking tool with folks who are on these social media sites because I sent in a video in February and haven't heard a thing since so I doubt it means anything this late in the game…..still thought it was strange though with as busy as they are?
questioning- you've got a great attitude about the request. It is a very healthy attitude and I think you should keep it!!!! BUT, play the "but " game for a minute and suppose they've changed themes. Maybe they are going back and reviewing old tapes for possible contestants! Maybe that is why they are so swamped with tapes right now. Just a thought…
i played a lot of "but" games when i applied for season 8 and 9 – LOL! and when i got the twitter email i started playing the 'but' game but dismissed it as 'i'm sure they're just looking to network and it's nothing' but then with the Linkedin request today i did start wondering. i thought if i posted on here and other people said they got the same thing i could go on dismissing it as a networking tool of BL using social media outlets and not give it a second thought….of course, here i am…haha…lots of second thoughts!
tempted – my wishful thinking right now is maybe i haven't heard from them yet this season b/c i already sent in my background check in season 8, extra pics, and 4 videotapes if you combine my applications from season 8 – 10…so maybe they have everything they need and will just randomly call me and say "want to come to the ranch" despite not hearing a peep from anybody this go around! that's really wishful thinking right!
The sad thing is i was doing really well not even worrying about it since i sent my tape in back in February….until this morning! this is my first time posting even! i was so consumed by it season 8 and 9 and so this season i left it up to fate, sent in the tape, and haven't even worried about it since….again, until today =)
questioning-
Again, keep it real- you have a healthy attitude. Probably just a networking thing, BUT… Why not let yourself get a little excited? If you have been following things the theme seems to keep changing and now they are posting some specific "types" they are still looking for. I too, have let myself become all- consumed with the possibility in the past. This season I've taken a more layed-back approach. I haven't even gotten a bite this season with a lot of success in the past so if they change themes and I fit the bill I would be thrilled!
@Tempted
Where have these "specific types" been posted and what are they?
Thx tempted – I like your perspective!!
@GirlScoutThinMintCookieBlizzardLover – Thanks, darlin! I always appreciated all of the support/kudos from all of you guys! I wish I could have made it to the show to drop some sort of secret "mcnutty" sign in front of the camera as a shout out to everyone here… Oh well… ;^>
I was a little bummed, but have hit the gym pretty hard (about 75% to avoid early injuries) with my wife that last four days and already feeling better.
You can always keep in touch via my personal journey blog at http://www.onelessfatguy.com. (I started it, then stopped after "hell" last year. Getting ready to restart.)
Cheers, peeps! Get out there. Change your life!

@questioning
I really like what @Tempted is saying and I agree completely, except, unfortunately I think there's one more "BUT" to add to the list.
I definitly hope you are being considered, BUT do we really think they have lost all ways of contacting you (phone numbers (however many you've listed on your paperwork), email address, street address, etc.).
Again, I want you to be considered, but I don't want you to fall for some sort of scam / spam.
What about emailing Holland directly at castingbyholland@gmail.com to see if she can help you?
Good Luck and if you really want it, I hope you make it to the Ranch.
@adrker
earlier someone said Ali tweeted they need females ages 18-24
@dwongu
Way to go! Keep it up! I've been working out, but I still struggle with the food. Exercise alone, however, is still doing so much for my overall well-being!
So out of the loop but I am wondering if they have chosen the cast yet? and is it couples or singles?
@dwongu – OMG – that lasagna recipe looks SOOOOO good. going to the store now! (might be a good way to get my kids to eat more veggies!) Thanks!
no, i agree that from a realistic standpoint i'm not being considered….but i was surprised to get the connection request. it is the real holland and the email associated with the linkedin account was one i've seen for her before and it's her picture. i've applied and done this 3 seasons now so unless someone swiped her pic and has it up as their linkedin pic then it's her. but like i said, more than likely i'm sure the CDs like to network on these social media sites. i got something where my email was searched on twitter as well by the official bl casting twitter account….i'm sure they just dumped all the email addresses they've gotten into these sites to get more followers and connections.
and yes, i did think that they could have called if they were actually trying to get a hold of me…..again, where realism sets in. but you gotta admit they are busy right now so it's a weird time to get the request.
and i was just wondering if other people had similar experienes =)
i just checked my linkedin account and it looks like she connected with lots of people today. adds to my theory that its just networking

You're not the only one. But I was thinking the same thing about the networking thing with linkedin and twitter. But just in case I updated both of my accounts…Can't help dreaming as long as I'm moving.
