Casting has begun for season TEN of Biggest Loser. Can you imagine? ย Here are some links with some great casting advice, followed by some of my own advice based on my experience getting on to season three of Biggest Loser (still the best season in my opinion!!!):
- NBC has posted casting information and the application here. ย You can download the application for season ten here.
- Pete Thomas, the season 2 $100,000 winner has some of the best casting call advice out there, which you can find at his website, Winning Man.
- Jen Kerns, a season three contestant like myself, and a doctor for the show for seasons four and five, has also put together some fantastic casting advice that you can read here.
- Holland, a casting director for Biggest Loser sent me a bunch of great advice on how to be casted, you can find itย here. ย She updated them October, 2009.
- I’ve been posting these casting tips for the last few seasons and they always seem to end up with thousands of comments; just about every season has contestants that were hanging out on here, reading and giving each other thoughts and advice. ย You can find the most reason one here.
- If youโre dealing with disappointment about not being cast, then check out my post on Biggest Loser casting disappointment.
One of the questions I hear a lot is about money โฆ how do contestants afford to be away from home and work for months at a time? I donโt know what it is now, but when I was a contestant there was a $500 a week stipend for cast members on the ranch. When you received the check you could cash it and spend it, send it home, save it, whatever. All airplane tickets, hotel accommodations, etc., for the contestants and potential cast members are taken care of by NBC, and during the casting process it self there was a $50 per diem to cover food costs.
Another question is timing; typically a season lasts for about 8-9 months. About four of this is spent in filming; if you last all the way until the final three or four, you could be away from home for as much as four months or so. Once the ranch filming wraps and the last few contestants are sent home, however, there is still another four or five months that all the contestants have to continue losing weight until the finale. In addition, potential cast members are flown out to California a couple weeks before filming begins for the final round of casting, medical checkups, psychological evals, etc. NBC brings out more people than what they need and the cast is not finalized until filming literally begins. People have been cut at the last minute and replacements flown in with hardly any time to spare. Nothing is in stone until itโs on camera!
When will you hear from Biggest Loser about your video? There is no way of knowing. I heard back a few weeks after I sent it in, but even after that itโs a big waiting game. If you get a phone number or email from a casting direction, definitely drop them a line/call every couple weeks to find out if youโre still in the running or whatโs going on. Schedules and plans change almost every day, so itโs easy to get lost in the shuffle. If you donโt hear back within a month I would think your video didnโt make the cut. That doesnโt mean you canโt send in another or visit a casting call โ itโs just up to you!
Finally, hereโs my video application tips! This is by no means a recipe for success; itโs based on my video application and the conversations I had with casting directors out in LA in between things. I was pretty curious about the whole process so I was pumping them for info even after filming began. Iโm such a nerd!
-
Theyโve usually decided if theyโre interested in you within the first 30-60 seconds of your video, so front load it with your best stuff. Make it interesting! Start off with something funny or exciting!
-
Keep in mind, if youโre going to be cast, your video is going to be watched hundreds of times by producers, executives, casting directors, etc. If it bores you or your friends the second or third time watching it โฆ put some more time into it!
-
Special effects? Donโt bother! Weโve all got video editing software with all sorts of bells and whistles on our home computers, but fancy transitions are not going to sell you to people who do video editing for a living. In fact, it can distract from who you are. Iโm a video editing nerd and I didnโt use any special effects other than putting my name and contact info on as a subtitle at the beginning.
-
Donโt bother talking about why you need to lose weight. When I first started filming my audition video I started describing all of my health reasons for losing weight โ but when I was watching it back, I realized โฆ they donโt need to hear it! One look at me was all they needed to know I needed to lose weight! Show them why you need to lose it; I said I needed to lose weight for my kids, and then I followed it with a minute or two of the best footage I could find of me with wrestling with my three boys. We probably filmed half an hour of that insanity and I grabbed the cutest, loudest, and funniest few moments for the audition video. Your physical need to lose weight is not nearly as interesting as who or what your losing the weight for.
-
Live loud! Reality TV is over the top, dramatic, and filled with loud personalities. They need to see that on your video! I wanted them to know that even though I was morbidly obese I was up to the challenge of the crazy competitions and workouts โ so I threw on a bunch of clips from my different youth group activities; me getting slimed, snowtubing, playing paintball, screaming at events, being on stage, running around โฆ you get the idea. Other contestants did things appropriate to their lives; Tim from Oregon had himself spinning out on his Harley, Tim from Delaware recruited his elementary school class to do things with him, Heather Hanson filmed herself running around in a sports bra all day doing her household chores and errands. The less talking and more action you can have, the better (in my opinion)!
-
If you have footage or photos of yourself thin, include those at some point on the video. If you can show them what your after will be, then do it!
Remember, enjoy the conversation here and know that I will never compromise your anonymity โ not to NBC, 3Ball, Casting Directors or anyone. You can post anonymously, or you can leave your names and contact information โฆ just remember that NBC likes to be the one announcing their cast for the show, so if you start identifying yourself publicly as a finalist, youโll probably find yourself eliminated from the casting process. Be aware that casting directors do check in at my blog to see what people are saying, get a feel for what questions are going on out there, and sometimes to give us updates. Good luck to everyone โฆ and let me know if you make the show! I get a kick out of hearing about the different contestants that have hung out on my blog before making the show! ![]()

I sent my video via Youtube directly to Jodi on the 12th. Nothing like waiting till the last minute. LOL
It still looks like the videos havent been watched. But I will have hope till I receive an email saying I am done….At least I dont have to turn my phone over to my friend anymore. I have learned a bit of control. Not much, but at least a little. hehehe
Do you think it is reassuring to get an email that you are in the top 40 for a specific open cast call and a request to send a video?
PS the requested video was NOT posted to youtube, but sent directly Jodi, is that a good move or a bust?

has anyone else received a request from Holland to be added as a contact on Linkedin or on Twitter saying that BLCasting searched for your email? my twitter is private but I got an email saying that they searched for my email and so I should make it public for people searching for me.
I really believe that it means nothing and am assuming they are searching for anyone they have an email for purely as a networking tool with folks who are on these social media sites because I sent in a video in February and haven’t heard a thing since so I doubt it means anything this late in the game…..still thought it was strange though with as busy as they are?
I got the email request too and on my other email address (the one I used back during season 8 casting), not the one I used for season 10. So I'm pretty sure it's nothing other than Holland joining one more technological communication avenue. She seems to love the stuff. ๐

tempted – my wishful thinking right now is maybe i haven’t heard from them yet this season b/c i already sent in my background check in season 8, extra pics, and 4 videotapes if you combine my applications from season 8 – 10…so maybe they have everything they need and will just randomly call me and say “want to come to the ranch” despite not hearing a peep from anybody this go around! that’s really wishful thinking right!
The sad thing is i was doing really well not even worrying about it since i sent my tape in back in February….until this morning! this is my first time posting even! i was so consumed by it season 8 and 9 and so this season i left it up to fate, sent in the tape, and haven’t even worried about it since….again, until today =)
We sound exactly alike. They have so much from me season 8 (including the background check) and I sent tons of pix and an almost 20 minute video for this casting that I told myself maybe they just didn't need to contact me for more. Alas, nothing more.

if you received that recently, then yes. do everything expeditiously.
I'm still hoping they decide to pick teachers for BL10. OKAY, a woman can hope. ๐

Is there ANY chance you sent your submission to Jodi's PRIVATE email account, rather than to Biggest Loser's "general" email address (thebiggestlosercasting@gmail.com)? I think I heard Jodi has moved on to another show, although I am not positive of this and thought if it's true and you didn't send yours in until the 12th, it may just be trapped in her PRIVATE email account where no one knows about it.
I'd try sending it again, because you should have received at least a receipt for a submission on deadline day.
Better they receive 2, instead of NONE.
@Girl Scout Thin Mint Cookie Blizzard Lover
My email was sent to the jodicasting email account. Do I send again? Even though Holland has said not to resubmit??
I THINK ITS OVER I GOT AN E MAIL TELLING ME THE FINALIST WOULD BE NOTIFIED BY THE 24TH AND YOU SHOULD HAVE A DR APPOINTMENTS FOR THE 26TH -29TH AND THE FIRST GROUP WILL FLY OUT ON THE 3OTH. ALSO WAS TOLD THAT EMAIL WAS SENT TO A SELECT GROUP… I WAS TOLD TO CANCELL MY DR APPOINTMENT FRIDAY……. NICE…..WILL NEVER DO THIS AGAIN……..ITS HEART BREAKING… ONLY THING I CAN THINK IS THEY ARE MAKING IT A PARTNERS SEASON.

YES! I absolutely would.
Not everyone has access, or the ability to read everything Holland writes / releases. I personally DO NOT have a Twitter account and I hear she says A LOT of things on there. Who will ever know if you saw her comment about not resubmitting a video, and besides, you haven't received ANY proof they ever saw your video. RIGHT! You only know they should certainly be thru watching the videos submitting by the original deadline.
Who's gonna know?
RE-SUBMIT IT! I've got your back. Besides, just blame me.
She made me do it!!!
I cried and cried through tonight's BL9 episode for many reasons. It touched me to the core. I really wish that I could be one of the BL team: changing my life, inspiring people, making a difference.
@Girl Scout Thin Mint Cookie Blizzard Lover and
@GivingItOneLastGo
Per one of Holland's posts she still sits next to Jodi, and Jodi is using that email for casting for other shows… I think that she got the email and forwarded to the right person… or maybe even watched it herself ๐ Either way, I don't think that you need to resend.
It is a great thing to be in the top 40, but its not such a good thing if you haven't heard from anyone in a few weeks… I wouldn't say that your journey is definitely over, only that there is a good chance that it might be… sorry ๐
@Busy
it was such a great show… and I totally agree. I think that as much as I want to lose weight, I want to help people, and this show would allow me to do both… oh well ๐
Hi!! Im Ashley and i went to a casting call for BL10 and got a call back. I then had the on camera interview with marc and jodi, did the home video, had to do a biography, sent in pictures, everything. I just got email after email moving forward in the casting process…then Friday i got an email that said i was not picked!!! I thought it would be ok but then last night when i watched BL9 i felt incredibly jealous and heart broken that i would now not be able to have this opportunity. I feel like there is no hope. I am 20 years old and have about 200 pounds to loose. I need some motivation…Im in a serious slump but i want and am ready to change!!! Thanks! Phil. 1:3
@Busy
I totally agree!! I was crying at so many points ! Many were bc I was almost jealous of the contestants. They are all soo close, such great friends, such a great support system and inspiring to so many people. I would just LOVE to be a part of the whole thing!
@ Ashley
I feel so terrible for you! I'm so sorry you weren't picked after getting that far. It is so weird that you were told you were not moving on when they are still accepting tapes for this season -if it makes you feel any better I bet they went another route like couples or something like that. We have all read a million times that so many people try out more than once and get picked so there is always next time.

I felt that, too! Heartbreaking.
@Ashley ๐
So many of us on this blog got that far and are now sad and wishing that were us. If we all lived closer, we could meet up, exercise and be that support… We all are feeling sad right now, but we need to make a plan for change.
@dreamingofbl10
Exactly my feelings.
@Ashley ๐
Welcome Ashley!
I know that right now that 200lbs seems like something that just can't be mastered, and not to sound preachy- but you can do this. It won't be easy and it won't be fast, but you can do it! God must have a reason why you didn't make the show… and I'm sure that sometime in the future you'll look back and it will all make sense
But if you're meant to be on the Biggest Loser there are more seasons to come… Stephanie made it far for season 8, but then wasn't casted… she lost some weight (something like 40lbs) and then made it for season 9… and thank goodness she did, because that's where she met Sam ๐ Everything really happens for a reason… and although I don't know you, the casting directors saw something special in you and I have a feeling that that something is that you really have what it takes to do this on the ranch or at home…. think of it as you made it but got sent home early!

I think you chose a great verse for you to be motivated by but keep reading…"so that you may be able to discern what is best and may be pure and blameless until the day of Christ, FILLED with the FRUIT OF RIGHTEOUSNESS that comes through Jesus Christ- to the glory and praise of God." (Philippians 1:10-11).
We (all us McNutties) need to be filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes from Christ. It is easy to see the HUGE barrier of our physical body but when we allow it to consume us and lose track of the things that truly matter, we start worshiping the wrong things and are filled with Earthly fruit which can be just as damaging to our soul.
I'll admit that I was too jealous that I wasn't on the ranch, touching lives through that unique and life changing experience. But then I was reminded that I can impact people. I can touch lives right where I am. I don't need to be on TV to be an inspiration. I can have my family, my community, and my self looking up to me as a role-model by barring the fruit of righteousness. I can see dramatic life change happen by walking close to my savior and listening to his voice. The I realized that though the weight I bare won't come off dramatically like we see on BL, I can still be a teacher, a mentor, an inspiration by simply getting off the couch, climb a few mountains (literally and figuratively) and make sure my life is barring the right kind of fruit. Hope that helps.
BTW…climbed my first Mountain on Saturday. It was AMAZING! Highly recommend it. You'll never know what you can do unless you try doing it. God Bless! Love you all.
Ok I need some advice.. So my game plan is this.. I am starting with 10%. That is my first BIG goal. I just don't know what my length goal is with that 10% however I have a family reunion at the end of May so I think I would like a 10 lb weight loss by the reunion to be my mini goal. My 10% lbs are 31.5..haha Must be accurate!! LOL So maybe I should make the 4th of July my goal to hit my 10%. I started this plan on Monday so that is what I am considering my start date. Is this unrealistic/not aggressive enough/to aggressive? I know no one can know for sure but I know you all have opinions!! Please let me know what you all think.
@preacherman
I don't know you but I have read several of your posts and you inspire me… I just wanted you to know that.
@preacherman
How did you know I needed that? I have been praying and asking for direction. I am not understanding the purpose of the BL door that has opened several times. I am sure there is a reason. I am stuck feeling that there is something that I am meant to do and I am on the verge of doing it, but I don't know what it is. As if family isn't enough. It is, but I can't help feeling I am supposed to help people. I thought BL was going to be my plaform, but that door has closed. I haven't been honest here how far I had gotten in the BL process(since I didn't want to ruin my chances), but let's just say I am sad, sad, sad…I needed your post. Thanks.
@preacherman
OOPs! "here 'ABOUT' how far.."
@preacherman
Thank you… you are changing lives and inspiring people like me!!! Just like Busy, I really needed your post and your insight. THANK YOU!!
I really need some help guys. After seeing that the deadline was extended, I went and had my video put together (because I couldn't figure out how to do it myself). I put the DVD in my computer and tried to upload it to YouTube but nothing is happening. When I select upload video I select the drive my DVD is in and then there are several choices to choose from (none of which I understand) then if I select a choice it says it's uploading and generating tags and then nothing happens.
Can someone please tell me what I am doing wrong? I have even tried to copy the video to my computer from my drive but it won't even let me do that. I am desparate. I would rather upload it to youtube because based upon what I have read here, you are sent an e-mail letting you know your video has been watched and to take it down. Which is what I want versus overnighting in and never knowing for sure it got watched.
Are there any techies out there than can help me?
@preacherman
Preacherman, thank you for the inspiration! And Congratulations on climbing a mountain! That is so awesome, I really want to run a marathon with my son, but it won't be this year.
I watched the BL last night and I have always wanted to make it to the makeover show! Last night's show was really inspirational to me, when they were helping the people of Dallas. That's one of the reasons I want to lose weight on the show. But I never got any further than I saw that they watched my video, so it's over for me.
Thank you all, I love to read your stories!
Thanks again Preacherman!
Hey does anyone know how and when they decide what they're looking for in contestants? It would be way less work for them to announce that before they asks for videos and cc's, and it would help us all know that this is not our season.
hey, how is everyone doing today? ๐ I got a lot to catch up on!!! AND, no ๐ my video hasn't been watched by the casting department yet either, so I am still waiting, ugggg. So, sorry to those who already got notice that they didn't make it this season, but don't give up hope, keep losing weight and try again and hang on till Saturday, cause I have a super suprise for everyone here, lol, just something little that may help us all lose some weight together ๐

They may have an ideal going into it, but the network could change gears at anytime. For example, they may get a whole lot of contestants that are absolutely perfect and then the network as for married couples or single parents and then everything changes. It's really hard to know, that's why they asked couples and singles to apply.

*So if your goal is 30 lbs, then try and lose 2 lbs a week. Watch what you eat and do cardio for at least 20 minutes three times a week.
30 lbs to lose in one month may be a goal that would end in defeat and disappointment, well heck, no sugar coating, that's just plain insane, lol!
Unless your on the ranch I guess ๐ Just make sure you are losing weight every week or at least not gaining. First few weeks work more on changing your habbits and including exercise and healthy eating. AND, come back Saturday :D!!! I have something that will help and I would love to work out with anyone who want to start a fitness resolution and set goals ๐ I'm 5' and 225 ๐ I desperately want to get back to 115, my perfect weight and I plan to lose it little by little eating healthy and exercising. also, too, I wonder if they don't tell us because it could ruin the surprise for the show, suspense, brings viewers and also because they everyone trying out may try and be something that they are not, in attempt to get cast, and the casting directors keep saying, just be yourself, they want to see the real us

Ok, I am going to attempt this one.
First of all, I do not understand why your computer would have you uploading something just to watch a DVD.
1. Have you tried it in a DVD player?
2. Put the DVD in the computer, go to "My Computer" and right click on the appropriate drive you put the DVD into? Select "PROPERTIES" from the menu and verify there is something actually on the DVD. There should be a large number in the blue colored "USED SPACE" and probably a zero in the pink colored "FREE SPACE". If there is a zero in the "USED SPACE" that would mean there's nothing on the DVD.
3. Assuming the "Properties" said there IS something on the DVD, either right click on the drive again (in "My Computer") and select "PLAY" OR double click on the drive and the video should start playing.
4. As far as YouTube goes, that can only be done if you have a copy of the video either on your computer or possibly on the DVD. What you would do is to go to the YouTube website and Upload your video there (from your computer or DVD). They offer step-by-step instructions, but if you have any trouble just let us know. We'll try to help, but you need to be certain you at least have a copy of it.

Hi all. ๐
I have been laying low, I was advised it might be a good idea, until we know what was happening with me this season. Alas, no go for me. And a few other friends of mine one that I was SURE was a shoe in.
Very interesting. I wonder what they were looking for this season.
I have been reading and it's been hard to stay away, but you all have been doing so well helping each other! It's so nice to see. ๐
I have lost almost 50lbs since Feb and I am still going strong. I hope you guys continue this fight on your own and don't let this process get you down! YOU ARE WORTH THE FIGHT!!!
๐
Yarra
Sorry to hear that Yarra but congrats on the 50 pd weight loss!!
I'm thinking they must have drastically changed what they were looking for this season otherwise why the huge extenstion for tapes. Maybe they went for teams not singles. Who knows!
@Not Done Yet
None of the Upload stuff makes any sense to me at all.
Did you try it in a DVD player and did it work?
Have you signed up for a YouTube account? After you do, can you go back to the lady and have her UPLOAD it to YouTube for you?
Casting says mini DVD's need to be "FINALIZED" before taking them from the recorder or submitting them otherwise they do not work in a DVD player. That's why I ask if it works in a DVD player. That's what happened to me in Season 8. Although, I was not using a mini DVD, my submission would play in the computer, but not any DVD player.
I'm not certain, but I do not think a mini DVD will cause it not to be uploaded to YouTube.
I just pulled out my Season 8 DVD and this is what I just did.
1. Put final version of DVD in "DVD" drive
2. RIGHT click on the DVD drive in "MY COMPUTER" folder
3. Select "COPY"
4. RIGHT click on the desktop
5. Select "PASTE" – video should be copied from the DVD to the DESKTOP
6. Go to YouTube and UPLOAD the video from your DESKTOP.
Hope this works for you as mine just did.
GOOD LUCK
@Not Done Yet
Did the lady test the DVD before you left there, to make certain it worked?

Thanks! Phil. 1:3
It really does sound like they have changed direction with who they're casting.

NBC's The Biggest Loser is looking for all ethnicities! Did your upbringing play a role in your weight gain? Are your traditions and memories all surrounded by food? If so, we want to hear your story!
You must have at least 100lbs to lose.
To be considered please send an email to thebiggestlosercasting@gmail.com . You must include your name, age, occupation, contact phone number, height, weight, a photo and a description of who you are and why you want to lose the weight.

Ok, my last post is awaiting moderation.
To shorten it: looks like they are looking for a different kind of story judging by this casting post.

@Shawna Joy
Oh no, no.,… Not 30 lbs in one month!! That was the July 4th goal.. It was 10 lbs by the end of may!! HAHA Yeah that would be totally insane to try 30 lbs in 30 days. I am not sure my husband would survive that journey..HAHA

Not Done Yet :
I really need some help guys. After seeing that the deadline was extended, I went and had my video put together (because I couldn’t figure out how to do it myself). I put the DVD in my computer and tried to upload it to YouTube but nothing is happening. When I select upload video I select the drive my DVD is in and then there are several choices to choose from (none of which I understand) then if I select a choice it says it’s uploading and generating tags and then nothing happens.
Can someone please tell me what I am doing wrong? I have even tried to copy the video to my computer from my drive but it won’t even let me do that. I am desparate. I would rather upload it to youtube because based upon what I have read here, you are sent an e-mail letting you know your video has been watched and to take it down. Which is what I want versus overnighting in and never knowing for sure it got watched.
Are there any techies out there than can help me?
Why don't you just overnight the DVD?
Aw, Yarra, I'm disappointed you're back online in this capacity but I'm ecstatic about your weightloss.
I really do think they've changed course.
