Biggest Loser casting tips (season 12)

Biggest Loser is now casting for season 12! ย Casting calls will be announced in January, so stay tuned. ย Basically, this post is a collection of tips I’ve written based on my experience making the cast of season three, as well as some links to casting advice I don’t think you should miss:

  • NBC has posted casting information and the applicationย here. ย They have all the casting news and information on a special blog just for Biggest Loser casting, which you can findย here.
  • Pete Thomas, the season 2 $100,000 winner has some of the best casting call advice out there, which you can find at his website,ย Winning Man.
  • Jen Kerns, a season three contestant like myself, and a doctor for the show for seasons four and five, has also put together some fantastic casting advice that you can readย here.
  • Holland, a casting director for Biggest Loser sent me a bunch of great advice on how to be casted, you can find itย here. ย She updated them October, 2009.
  • I’ve been posting these casting tips for the last few seasons and they always seem to end up with thousands of comments; just about every season has contestants that were hanging out on here, reading and giving each other thoughts and advice. ย You can find the most recent oneย here.
  • If youโ€™re dealing with disappointment about not being cast, then check out my post onย Biggest Loser casting disappointment.

One of the questions I hear a lot is about money โ€ฆ how do contestants afford to be away from home and work for months at a time? I donโ€™t know what it is now, but when I was a contestant there was a $500 a week stipend for cast members on the ranch. When you received the check you could cash it and spend it, send it home, save it, whatever. All airplane tickets, hotel accommodations, etc., for the contestants and potential cast members are taken care of by NBC, and during the casting process it self there was a $50 per diem to cover food costs.

Another question is timing; typically a season lasts for about 8-9 months. About four of this is spent in filming; if you last all the way until the final three or four, you could be away from home for as much as four months or so. Once the ranch filming wraps and the last few contestants are sent home, however, there is still another four or five months that all the contestants have to continue losing weight until the finale. In addition, potential cast members are flown out to California a couple weeks before filming begins for the final round of casting, medical checkups, psychological evals, etc. NBC brings out more people than what they need and the cast is not finalized until filming literally begins. People have been cut at the last minute and replacements flown in with hardly any time to spare. Nothing is in stone until itโ€™s on camera!

When will you hear from Biggest Loser about your video? There is no way of knowing. I heard back a few weeks after I sent it in, but even after that itโ€™s a big waiting game. If you get a phone number or email from a casting direction, definitely drop them a line/call every couple weeks to find out if youโ€™re still in the running or whatโ€™s going on. Schedules and plans change almost every day, so itโ€™s easy to get lost in the shuffle. If you donโ€™t hear back within a month I would think your video didnโ€™t make the cut. That doesnโ€™t mean you canโ€™t send in another or visit a casting call โ€“ itโ€™s just up to you!

Finally, hereโ€™s my video application tips! This is by no means a recipe for success; itโ€™s based on my video application and the conversations I had with casting directors out in LA in between things. I was pretty curious about the whole process so I was pumping them for info even after filming began. Iโ€™m such a nerd!

  • Theyโ€™ve usually decided if theyโ€™re interested in you within the first 30-60 seconds of your video, so front load it with your best stuff. Make it interesting! Start off with something funny or exciting!
  • Keep in mind, if youโ€™re going to be cast, your video is going to be watched hundreds of times by producers, executives, casting directors, etc. If it bores you or your friends the second or third time watching it โ€ฆ put some more time into it!
  • Special effects? Donโ€™t bother! Weโ€™ve all got video editing software with all sorts of bells and whistles on our home computers, but fancy transitions are not going to sell you to people who do video editing for a living. In fact, it can distract from who you are. Iโ€™m a video editing nerd and I didnโ€™t use any special effects other than putting my name and contact info on as a subtitle at the beginning.
  • Donโ€™t bother talking about why you need to lose weight. When I first started filming my audition video I started describing all of my health reasons for losing weight โ€“ but when I was watching it back, I realized โ€ฆ they donโ€™t need to hear it! One look at me was all they needed to know I needed to lose weight! Show them why you need to lose it; I said I needed to lose weight for my kids, and then I followed it with a minute or two of the best footage I could find of me with wrestling with my three boys. We probably filmed half an hour of that insanity and I grabbed the cutest, loudest, and funniest few moments for the audition video. Your physical need to lose weight is not nearly as interesting as who or what your losing the weight for.
  • Live loud! Reality TV is over the top, dramatic, and filled with loud personalities. They need to see that on your video! I wanted them to know that even though I was morbidly obese I was up to the challenge of the crazy competitions and workouts โ€“ so I threw on a bunch of clips from my different youth group activities; me getting slimed, snowtubing, playing paintball, screaming at events, being on stage, running around โ€ฆ you get the idea. Other contestants did things appropriate to their lives; Tim from Oregon had himself spinning out on his Harley, Tim from Delaware recruited his elementary school class to do things with him, Heather Hanson filmed herself running around in a sports bra all day doing her household chores and errands. The less talking and more action you can have, the better (in my opinion)!
  • If you have footage or photos of yourself thin, include those at some point on the video. If you can show them what your after will be, then do it!

Remember, enjoy the conversation here and know that I will never compromise your anonymity โ€“ not to NBC, 3Ball, Casting Directors or anyone. You can post anonymously, or you can leave your names and contact information โ€ฆ just remember that NBC likes to be the one announcing their cast for the show, so if you start identifying yourself publicly as a finalist, youโ€™ll probably find yourself eliminated from the casting process. Be aware that casting directors do check in at my blog to see what people are saying, get a feel for what questions are going on out there, and sometimes to give us updates. Good luck to everyone โ€ฆ and let me know if you make the show! I get a kick out of hearing about the different contestants that have hung out on my blog before making the show!ย ;)

  1. YOU GUYS CRACK ME UP! I haven't been in the running since season 8 and I have faithfully followed the blog for fun:) Nerdy, I know… but it helps me live the fantasy of actually getting chosen!

    @hmmmmm

Did I ever try to say you couldn't move forward without a bio and background check??? Or are you trying to imply that videos not yet viewed have no shot of making it this season? ๐Ÿ™‚

  2. @lurknomore

Unless they are told they are going to finals, they cant count their chickens yet…trust me!

  3. @Tempted

I dont see how you could be in the running for this season if your video has yet to be watched? Ive been through this so many times and know the things that have to be done so you can move forward…thats just my opinion…

  4. I never said they know they are going to finals week, I am saying that if you don't KNOW your still in the running then you probably aren't. There seems to be a lot of people that believe they are still in the running and aren't. I am sure the list of potentials is pretty narrowed down by now.

    @tempted

I have to agree with hmmmmm right now. If your video hasn't been watched you are in a tough spot. It isn't over for you, but has to be pretty slim. You would have to have it watched sometime this month and pretty much blow the socks off the casting directors.

  5. @hmmmmm

Season 8 I got my video in just before deadline and was called 2 weeks later and asked for more video/bio/background check. Had to be in before Tues noon for Weds pitches). Finalists were notified the next day.

Now, I don't know if they are done with NBC pitches at this point, I don't know if that has been made public, but I know my video has not been viewed this season.

  6. @lurknomore

I'm not counting on making it this season– I was really hoping to get noticed for next season ๐Ÿ™‚

  7. @tempted

That's great! I hope so too.

  8. @JustWaiting

I see.. well you are a better person than me lol.. while I would be ecstatic for my family member, I think I would be too disappointed for myself to involved in this blog… lol I know its selfish!

  9. I'm definitely out as well, but keep an eye on the blog. Over the last few months, I've gotten to know some of the people here and am anxiously awaiting news that they made it. My partner is still in it and hoping to hear by Friday. I'm psyched for him and, after an hour or so of mild sulking, just trust that this wasn't meant to be the path for me. So, I'm empowering myself to do what needs to be done on my own (with a whole pile of support) not because I believed all along that I could do it on my own, but realizing that there was no other choice, I'm doing the only thing I can to have the future I want.

@blogstalker – don't put all your eggs in one basket, make a plan so that if you don't get on the show (and in all likelihood, you won't) you won't sabotage your dreams by crashing emotionally. There is a way to prevent that by taking action now.

  10. @DotDotDot

Oh yeah, I already have b/c I'm pretty sure we are out… haven't heard anything since the last day of March even though we received 3 emails after our HT, one requesting more info. Haven't heard anything since. So, my goal is to lose 40 lbs by the time casting for season 13 starts and ill apply one last time… in the last two weeks I'm down 7.5 lbs. That is my plan of action.. just waiting to hear its officially over… ya know?

  11. @blogstalker Great job! Yea, when I heard that I was definitely out I was relieved to know and slept like a baby that night…after many nights of fretting over whether I was in or out. Best of luck to you!

  12. @JustWaiting

I am out and my partner is still in too. Sucked at first and now I'm fine.

Decided that after this boring, annoying season if my partner doesnt get in, I won't be watching it anyway (along with all my friends who stopped watching a long time ago). This season can't end soon enough….

I found out about a program today called Couch to 5k. Sounds like a good place to start if you are like me and try to do too much too fast. That has been my problem with weight loss in the past; I always get injured after a few weeks and end up gaining all of the weight back and then some when I am recovering.

  14. OK for all you vets out there I have a question…I was called the 1st of April and was told that they loved my video, I was asked for more info (not background or bio) and potential partner info and have had some contact since then last being mid apr. but nothing like "your moving on". SOOO, I have a new development and need an opion…. I submitted 2 partners but neither were bio, my bio brother has now decided he would be interested in going on with me (he has an awesome story but only weighs 275).

Should I email the CD and give this partner info???

I know that my chances are slim and they are saying dont call me Ill call you but?? Is it worth a shot or a waste of time?

  15. @Need Help!

You won't forgive yourself if you don't give it everything you have right? I would let Angelique know if I were you, but I really think its a singles season so it may not matter. Good luck though.

    @Need Help!

It's worth a shot but FYI…they told me men have to be over 300…

  17. @blogstalker

Thanks and I really think you are right. Ok, the only email adress I have is to the CD that called me, is there an email for Angelique??

  18. Ok oops, I spelled it wrong lol.. its Angelic. You could probably send it to your CD. I'm sure they'll give it to who it should go to. I havent had much contact with Angelic, so I don't know.

  19. @wishfulthinking

I was going to get that ap! I have been looking at two of them and the reviews. We should all do it together through the blog and when whe make it to the 5K stage, we can meet up at a 5K in a couple of places and run!

    @Busy

I don't think you need to get the app. I found an outline of the program online. its not on an ipod with you, but its pretty easy to remember and basically just tells you a realistic way to progress. I don't own an ipod so I just plan on writing the plan down and bringing that to the gym. The last time I really tried to get in shape was back in the fall because I decided I wanted to run a marathon (like on BL). I started off slow but I thought I could do more so after a couple weeks I decided to run at an 8 for about a minute despite the fact I was already pretty sore. I got through it but I ended up with injuries that kept me from being able to stand for more than 5 minutes. I had to quit my job and my exercise routine and am just now fully recovering. Needless to say, I am going to try the slow and steady wins the race method and follow a set plan.

But I do think it would be a good idea to try to get a group to motivate each other. Maybe after this season is officially cast we can get something together.

i feel like you have to know someone who knows someone to get in…….it seems like alot of people have posted that they know past, present or future contestants…..or that they have become close to CD…..please tell me I'm wrong and that random" joe blows" can make it on the show…

  23. feeling pathetic Avatar
    feeling pathetic

i am sooooo embarrassed to say that I have tried out 6 or 7 times……whats wrong w/ me? I can do this w/o the show!! i have rode this roller coaster ride too many times…..I've let it(the proceess) mess w/ my head, lost sleep, became obsessed, upset, just went totally nuts! i need to have them take me off their call list and email list and any other list that exists.I need to delete everyone from FB & twitter…..I need to take back my life from" BL"casting HELL……this is BEYOND insanity.

I know of 2 more people who were sent the dr. Form…

  25. Both singles?

  26. I have read on here that a lot of teams have been split up…..does anyone know any teams that are moving forward?

    Yep

  28. So it's just coincidence that so many of you know or know of each other?Puhleeez…. Really?

  29. @Gettin closer

Are you saying yep to me or to Need Help! ?

  30. @pathetic

I don't know anybody on here. I met some current contestants on a walk that they hosted.

  31. @pathetic

Many of us have met on here, and people get to know past contestants at BL events (ie casting calls, walks, and as the go through the casting process). You get to know the CD when you get somewhere in the process.

  32. @pathetic

    DELURKING:

There is no inside track to getting on. Youre either right for the show they are casting or youre not. Its not a "Who you know" thing, more like a "Who you are" thing. If you've applied for many Seasons, you get to know the CD's and other Hopefuls in your area and on blogs such as this. Many on this blog have changed their names this Season (I have not) and weve become Mcnutty Friends. This may be why you think it's a "Who you know" thing, but it really isnt. Its all about what they are casting and if you are what theyre looking for for that particular Season. Nothing personal, just business.

    RELURKING

  33. finalists have been called

  34. @DonnieD

    how do ya know this?

  35. i know

  36. @Need Help!

my teammate and I haven't heard that we are split with only one of us going (so we assume we are still together) and we both got the email about the 6th….so I would like to think we are both moving on! haha

  37. @DonnieD

weiiiiiiiird how do you know though? I thought they said they would put it on twitter if they had been contacted?

  38. @DonnieD

    It's not April…. can't be an April Fools joke…

But, again, not all videos that were in before deadline have been viewed, so I have some very serious doubts about your claim! ๐Ÿ™‚

If it is in fact true, then I have some very serious doubts about the credibility of the show. ๐Ÿ™‚

Come find me on FACEBOOK, "MASTER CASTERS FAT BLASTERS" and give us an update on your weight loss progress or just share an encouraging word ๐Ÿ˜€

I still need to weigh today but now still trying to exercise everyday and eating when hungry and providing myself lots of great, healthy choices!

My pants were falling off, lol, the other day while watering the horses, I had my cell phone in one pocket and the keys in the other and they weighed them down, lol and I had to keep pulling them up ๐Ÿ˜€

These pants were a cute pair with zipper pockets that were too small on me at the beginning of my weight loss program. I had a single pair that were large enought to fit!

So, gotta say that I am very excited to have a pair that were too tight, now almost too big, and what a bummer too, because I really, really liked these pants, but that's ok, I will just get a smaller size!!!

    Yahooo!!! Yahoo!!!! Yahooo!!!

  41. …getting anxious…

  42. I am still keepin my fingers crossed for the 6th to hear something even though it says on Hollands facebook it wont be until the end of may. anyone else feelin that way?

  43. @donnied you don't know! I know for a fact that they will be contacted between friday the sixth and the end of may. They are in fact still watching last minute videos. So nothing at all is set in stone. In addition no one is guranteed they are keeping this season very hush hush ๐Ÿ˜‰

  44. Hey!!! I resemble that remark!! ๐Ÿ™‚ @Gettin closer

  45. I was talking out of pure exhaustion and frustration… I'm leaving Friday for a 9 day much needed vacation….. No, not to LA…. To the mountains… Time to regroup!!!@Big Fat Guy

  46. Well I am out. Just found out today that I have to have surgery and will be facing 4-6 wks recovery. ๐Ÿ™ Wasn't meant to be… Going to take care of me no matter what though. That was the best thing I got from this process.

  49. Has anyone e-mail AM to see if they are still in the running?

  50. @curious

I did on 4/27. She said end of this week Finalist would know. The next day I got the Generic email.
