Biggest Loser casting tips (season 12)

Biggest Loser is now casting for season 12!  Casting calls will be announced in January, so stay tuned.  Basically, this post is a collection of tips I’ve written based on my experience making the cast of season three, as well as some links to casting advice I don’t think you should miss:

  • NBC has posted casting information and the application here.  They have all the casting news and information on a special blog just for Biggest Loser casting, which you can find here.
  • Pete Thomas, the season 2 $100,000 winner has some of the best casting call advice out there, which you can find at his website, Winning Man.
  • Jen Kerns, a season three contestant like myself, and a doctor for the show for seasons four and five, has also put together some fantastic casting advice that you can read here.
  • Holland, a casting director for Biggest Loser sent me a bunch of great advice on how to be casted, you can find it here.  She updated them October, 2009.
  • I’ve been posting these casting tips for the last few seasons and they always seem to end up with thousands of comments; just about every season has contestants that were hanging out on here, reading and giving each other thoughts and advice.  You can find the most recent one here.
  • If you’re dealing with disappointment about not being cast, then check out my post on Biggest Loser casting disappointment.

One of the questions I hear a lot is about money … how do contestants afford to be away from home and work for months at a time? I don’t know what it is now, but when I was a contestant there was a $500 a week stipend for cast members on the ranch. When you received the check you could cash it and spend it, send it home, save it, whatever. All airplane tickets, hotel accommodations, etc., for the contestants and potential cast members are taken care of by NBC, and during the casting process it self there was a $50 per diem to cover food costs.

Another question is timing; typically a season lasts for about 8-9 months. About four of this is spent in filming; if you last all the way until the final three or four, you could be away from home for as much as four months or so. Once the ranch filming wraps and the last few contestants are sent home, however, there is still another four or five months that all the contestants have to continue losing weight until the finale. In addition, potential cast members are flown out to California a couple weeks before filming begins for the final round of casting, medical checkups, psychological evals, etc. NBC brings out more people than what they need and the cast is not finalized until filming literally begins. People have been cut at the last minute and replacements flown in with hardly any time to spare. Nothing is in stone until it’s on camera!

When will you hear from Biggest Loser about your video? There is no way of knowing. I heard back a few weeks after I sent it in, but even after that it’s a big waiting game. If you get a phone number or email from a casting direction, definitely drop them a line/call every couple weeks to find out if you’re still in the running or what’s going on. Schedules and plans change almost every day, so it’s easy to get lost in the shuffle. If you don’t hear back within a month I would think your video didn’t make the cut. That doesn’t mean you can’t send in another or visit a casting call – it’s just up to you!

Finally, here’s my video application tips! This is by no means a recipe for success; it’s based on my video application and the conversations I had with casting directors out in LA in between things. I was pretty curious about the whole process so I was pumping them for info even after filming began. I’m such a nerd!

  • They’ve usually decided if they’re interested in you within the first 30-60 seconds of your video, so front load it with your best stuff. Make it interesting! Start off with something funny or exciting!
  • Keep in mind, if you’re going to be cast, your video is going to be watched hundreds of times by producers, executives, casting directors, etc. If it bores you or your friends the second or third time watching it … put some more time into it!
  • Special effects? Don’t bother! We’ve all got video editing software with all sorts of bells and whistles on our home computers, but fancy transitions are not going to sell you to people who do video editing for a living. In fact, it can distract from who you are. I’m a video editing nerd and I didn’t use any special effects other than putting my name and contact info on as a subtitle at the beginning.
  • Don’t bother talking about why you need to lose weight. When I first started filming my audition video I started describing all of my health reasons for losing weight – but when I was watching it back, I realized … they don’t need to hear it! One look at me was all they needed to know I needed to lose weight! Show them why you need to lose it; I said I needed to lose weight for my kids, and then I followed it with a minute or two of the best footage I could find of me with wrestling with my three boys. We probably filmed half an hour of that insanity and I grabbed the cutest, loudest, and funniest few moments for the audition video. Your physical need to lose weight is not nearly as interesting as who or what your losing the weight for.
  • Live loud! Reality TV is over the top, dramatic, and filled with loud personalities. They need to see that on your video! I wanted them to know that even though I was morbidly obese I was up to the challenge of the crazy competitions and workouts – so I threw on a bunch of clips from my different youth group activities; me getting slimed, snowtubing, playing paintball, screaming at events, being on stage, running around … you get the idea. Other contestants did things appropriate to their lives; Tim from Oregon had himself spinning out on his Harley, Tim from Delaware recruited his elementary school class to do things with him, Heather Hanson filmed herself running around in a sports bra all day doing her household chores and errands. The less talking and more action you can have, the better (in my opinion)!
  • If you have footage or photos of yourself thin, include those at some point on the video. If you can show them what your after will be, then do it!

Remember, enjoy the conversation here and know that I will never compromise your anonymity – not to NBC, 3Ball, Casting Directors or anyone. You can post anonymously, or you can leave your names and contact information … just remember that NBC likes to be the one announcing their cast for the show, so if you start identifying yourself publicly as a finalist, you’ll probably find yourself eliminated from the casting process. Be aware that casting directors do check in at my blog to see what people are saying, get a feel for what questions are going on out there, and sometimes to give us updates. Good luck to everyone … and let me know if you make the show! I get a kick out of hearing about the different contestants that have hung out on my blog before making the show! ;)

No yes or no answer, I don't know how to feel about. More waiting. I'm probably out.

I don't think finalists have been called yet…BUT I KNOW atleast some dr. Requests have gone out.

  3. If finalists are only a couple days from being chosen, what use is it to send out dr. forms?? That doesn't make much sense to me…

  4. it sounds like maybe finalists will START to be called on friday and all of them will know between the 6th and the end of may? I wish it was all on the 6th

  5. @FancyNancy

By the 6th or Early next week, But WAY Before the end of May. Dont go off what Holland said, Thats when they'll announce it maybe, but not when Finalists will find out. They'll be long gone by then.

  6. @FancyNancy

The way I understand it, all finalists are decided on and called within a day or two… I could be wrong… I have a hard time thinking they do it over the course of a couple of weeks.

  7. @Hoping

I kind of think I have to agree with you on that one! I think they will make the public announcement after they can clear out and not get hounded!! 🙂

BUT, again, I say… not all late videos have been viewed which leads me to wonder about the timing of it all. I have never seen them take so long to view the late videos.

  8. @blogstalker

I always kind of wondered about those dr forms myself. The extensive testing they do during finals week surely gives them plenty more information!

  9. I'm guessing its a legal thing…

  10. No sense spending the money to get you to California if your own doctor won't approve it.

  11. @IDIDIT!

I am so sorry about your surgery. I hope you will be OK. My prayers are with you.

  12. @lurknomore

Some have gotten cleared by their own doc and then not cleared after finals week testing! How heartbreaking would THAT be?!

  13. I am not surprised. What they do in finals week most don't have have done. The doctor clearance is pretty simple and I doubt few get denied from it.

  14. The consensus of all the cd is that finalists will be selected between the 6th and the end of the month

  15. Clearly, the note from Holland to the whole world, means they will tell everyone at the end of the month (after filming has started!) that the contestants were selected. It came right after the letter that said they planned on notifying finalists by May 6th. Hello???? We are days from announcing and if there are videos that havent been watched, um…… well I think its obvious.

  16. In the past a note/email has been sent and/or posted that finalist were contacted. This is prior to filming. Once finalists get to CA there is no guarantee that they will be on the show. There have been people on this blog and other interviews that said they got to CA and never saw anyone else or they just didn't make it on the show.

I wouldn't be surprised if sometimes people get out there and then realize what a commitment it is and how long they may be away from their family and friends. It's not over once you become a finalist.

    .

So, although one piece of my submission has had a total of 9 hits to date, I've been UNWATCHED in Norway and Conneticut!

At this point I'm told I have only been watched in Sweden and Germany, so that means STILL NO VIEWERS IN CALIFORNIA!

What in the world is going on?

  18. @Girl Scout Thin Mint Cookie Blizzard Lover

I have to agree with you!!! I feel your pain! I am in the same boat. Two hits. Me and a friend.

Now, I am not necessarily holding out hope that I will be "in the running" this season, but I am feeling a bit frustrated to think that I have not been viewed! Puttung a video together is a lot of work 🙂

  19. @WTFisthat

… well, it is obvious!!! I see the writing on the wall… uh… duh!!! 🙂 Do you get the frustration of putting hours into an application and video and not even getting viewed?? 🙂

But, it is only obvious if the finalists are truly notified this week or beginning of next. If they won't be notified for 2 weeks, or even 3, well….

…then how obvious is it really?! 🙂

  20. The fact that people still haven't been viewed helps to give clues as to when finalists may be notified….

I am willing to be there are legal ramifications (not that I would pursue them!) if they finalized the season without looking at all applicants.

  21. As its been reported on Hollands site earlier this Season, Finals week is usually 7-10 days. Half the people sent make it to the Ranch, half go home. As its been reported many times on this blog, it seems to be around the 20th. Nothing has really changed from that. They usually give Finalists 10-14 days to prepare. That would mean Finalists will be notified by the 6th(As the email stated) or possibly early next week. I hate to say, if your video has not been viewed yet, youre probably out. Filming will probably begin in early June.

After a few seasons of applying, I have learned that although the CDs are seen as godlike…there is alot of deceit too!

  23. @Gettin closer

    agreed! 🙂

  24. That's because they are in the business of sales.

  25. @Hoping

I completely agree! The timeline only makes sense. The frustration is not that videos not viewed are probably out… it is that they were never considered!

  26. This season I sent in an app well before deadline and it hasn't been viewed. In the past I sent the app and video last minute and it not only got viewed but pitched to NBC!

So, do you think it is possible they weed out previous applicants videos… only view people they haven't seen before???

All through this process that is what I'm trying to determine. Have they given up on ME for one reason or another?

  27. All finalists have def been called

  28. @upupandaway

    I dont doubt it!

  29. @lurknomore

But they are messing with peoples emotions and lives! God I am so tempted to share my FULL experience!

  30. @hmmmmm

    What happened??

  31. For starters, being told, and I quote: "Do you really think we will find someone we like better than you guys"…

  32. Being contacted season after season, being STRONGLY encouraged to audition again, etc. IM SO FUCKING OVER IT!

  33. How can anyone know that ALL finalists have been called. I can see someone knowing that a finalist was called, but no way of knowing they all were.

  34. @lurknomore

The only thing I can think of is someone emailed Brandon and he told them all finalists had been contacted…

  35. I think I am only going to apply one last time after this. Things like this don't happen to me anyway.. so I'm going to make sure I'm not eligible for season 14.

  36. well shoot

  37. who is Brandon?

I think the whole "I haven't been watched issue" also brings up another issue of how much of the video actually gets watched. It has been said that videos are watched in entirety and if they light you they pass it around and watch it serveral times. It just doesn't seem realistically possible that ALL videos are watched ALL the way through. Esp when there are only a handful of people watching them and I have seen where they said they watched some 200 in a day.

Sorry, but thats just how I see it.

I don't care where someone read that they watch the whole video though for every video that they get, it just is not possible and NOT needed to cast the show.

They first look at your photos and your story, to get a quick glimps, if you fit the criteria that they are casting for that season, THEN (in my opinion, looking at it logically) they will click your vid, if they see something they like, they will send you a VIP if viewed prior to CC. If they are not interested, they will not contact you.

Your second attempt is to attend a CC, then if they like you, they will do a CB and if they like you after that, you will then be asked to submit more video footage, more photos, bio, background (all they need to pitch you). THEN you wait, for one season, possibly more, depending on if/when they realize that you are perfect for the cast. If CD's pitch you to 3Ball and they still like you, then 3Ball will pitch you to NBC, then if they still like you, you get invited to finals.

If you don't get a CC after a CB, they encourage you to send in a second Video, which again, they will view, if they have need of someone who fits your stats, for example, single, couple, mixed ethnicity, white girl, black younger contestant, mother/daughter, jewish, etc. THE Network has specific spots to fill and if they have an opening then they will use the videos to find someone to fill that opening, if they still cannot find someone, then they may extend the video deadline, like they did already or they may hold another CC in LA or somewhere else.

So, if you have not submitted your bio/background/etc, then you most likely are not in the running, UNLESS, they view your vid, think you are perfect and contact you ASAP and they will give you ASAP deadlines to get your paperwork, etc in. At this point and even weeks ago, potential hopefulls were told to rush their things in, so even more now that they are almost at the end.

If you have submitted your bio/background/etc, you are still in the running, I don't care what anyone says, they asked for that info and when it comes down to it, you never know at the last minute who they will decide to go with, so (in my opinion) if you submitted your bio/background and they have all they need to pitch you, then you should hear something, I would say between the date given May 6th and the end of May if you haven't already heard, which some may have heard news. If you don't hear my end of May, like Holland said, you most likely didn't make it.

  42. I doubt all people have been contacted.. if any at all…

from Holland a casting director… posted April 29th

Update: BL12 finalist notifications will not be complete until late May. It is simply impossible to notify all those that are not selected. If you had a one on one interview our CDs and are still in the mix then it's highly likely you have spoken to a member of our team in the last several weeks. If you haven't heard anything then it's unlikely you are still in the mix, unfortunately. If you sent in a video in the last month or so then there is still a chance we haven't viewed it yet, but certainly will. If you sent it before that and haven't been contacted then it's likely you were not selected to move forward for this particular season.

Also, I've lost track on how many videos I critiqued this season, and I am officially videos out and posted that on my website, I'm into X factor 🙂

But, I totally when nuts after watching like 5 videos in a row and my patience dwindled very quickly, you can totally tell in the first few seconds to one minute, who you like, how they would be on the ranch and if they have it in them to compete, then if you like them, you watch more, to learn more about them, to hear their story etc, to see if there is good enough footage there to pitch them or share them with other CD to get their opinion

They told me they were passing my videos around, so they do, do that, ALSO, I totally knew when they viewed my vid on YOUTUBE, it showed up 2 views from CA and only I and them had my link, from DEC to March no views at all, then all of a sudden 2 CA views on a Thursday and then they emailed me on Monday the following week, so you can know.

Now, get this, I've deleated my vids a while ago and I add new vids here and there and I still have CA as a state that views my vids the most and these are not even my BL vids, not that is weired, I wonder if they are still checking out my vids, probably not, but it is interested to see CA hits that are viewed virally/someone sharing links to my vid

AND BTW, thanks for all the view of my vids from this site, I love to see all the Matthewmcnutt views and yes, I know I'm crazy, but I'm definately NOT BORING!!! 😀

I'm finally feeling free after having obesity hold me down for so long, and I have a lot to make up for, I'm a happy person and living with depression for so long and finally breaking free from it, is amazing and it's like nothing can hold me back now 😀

I wish everyone here can feel what I feel, to be free and be losing weight and not letting BL casting process consume you.

  44. It doesn't matter if the CD's loved you or not… even if you're the best thing since sliced bread, the execs and NBC big whigs have to love you too, or it ain't happening. We were told after the CB interview that we were their FAVORITE interview ever… in the eight seasons they'd been casting. Favorite. EVER. But it doesn't mean a darn thing if you don't fit the puzzle in juuuust the right way!

  45. I think DonnieD/UpUpAndAway is trying to tell us he/she was called. Whether or not it's true, who knows. But the upupandaway avatar would suggest he's trying to tell us he's flying somewhere.

  46. @J

Hollands post doesnt mean anything, IMO.

-justwaiting, that is soooo true, I got picked from Holland's table and at my CB, they were so awesome and told me before I left the interview that I was moving on and I was so worried about not having a partner but they were like that wasn't a big deal at all that they would wait till this season to pitch me, I really think Holland and the casting team for that city LOVED ME, but I think that when it go to Brandon, he didn't 🙁

The reason I think this is because my very first season, I had a VIP, sat at Brandon's table and it seemed like he had alrady had his mind made up that no one at our table was moving on, I think, he really goes by what they are looking for and if you are not it, it's over, doesn't matter story or what.

Then last season had Holland and things went extrememly quick!

Then this season, went to two CC one with BARB, who I think had someone contact me after my CC to request my video links again, because she talked to me a lot doing the CC, even with a table full of people there

Then I drove straight to Nashville with a VIP and got Brandon and again sit at his table and he seemed cordially nice to everyone but agian, I felt that as soon as he saw me, he did not like me for the show, so, in my personal opinion, I feel I got pitched to 3Ball, but Brandon, didn't like me (for the show) and that was the end of my journey

AND, I also feel that yes, they do maybe pitch you and then 3 Ball or the Network says no and then they don't want to see the same people each season, THEY WANT NEW FACES TO LOOK THOUGH AND MAKE DECISIONS ON, this is why, I think this casting season, they decided to focus on new applicants more, for example, at my table the first question Brandon asked after asking us if we had applied before WAS, "This question is for those who have never applied before, WHY NOW?"

AND after letting everyone talk and not feeling I could talk because the question was Directed specifically NOT to me, since he asked only for those new applicants to answer the quesiton, I head the guy tell us we only had a couple minutes left and I knew, weather he wanted to hear from me or now, I had to say something, cause I made the trip with huge expenses and sacrifice and it wasn't fair to me to turn me down, at the table without getting even a few seconds to plead my case.

It is a show, I think they need lot's of people to show up for CCs, to keep it pumped, up, unfortunately, I could be wrong but I think that there casting process, may be NOW turning people away from the show, because they get frustrated, spending time on money for to make a CC and to go and not feel that they even had a chance to get cast, this is the problem with them having a list of what they are looking for and opening it to everyone, but really if you do not fit the list, your chances could be zero.

If we knew what they wanted that wouldn't ruin the show/suspenses, and it would give us the opportunity to make an informed decision, you wants to put time and energy into a dream when their is no real hope to reach that dream, I for one, would rather prusue dreams that I had more control over reaching 😀

  48. @ShawnajoyRose

Not to be mean; BUT…As usual, a lot of words, poor punctuation, and not much said that hasnt been stated 1000x already. Even your posts are exhausting to read.

  49. @ShawnajoyRose

I was told once that they don't publish what they are looking for, because all of a sudden everyone would be THAT… and they would have trouble seeing the authentic person.

I also think they open it up enough to get some of the new faces in there…

When Abby showed up I doubt they were looking specifically for a white female in her mid-thirties who lost her family in a car crash, but she and her story were compelling enough to pitch and maybe even switch the gears on the season a little. That season ended up being called "second chances" so they started looking for other stories that would help build the concept.

  50. @Hoping

Not to be mean… BUT… if you don't have something nice to say, why say it? No one is forcing you to read her posts!
