Biggest Loser is now casting for season 12! Casting calls will be announced in January, so stay tuned. Basically, this post is a collection of tips I’ve written based on my experience making the cast of season three, as well as some links to casting advice I don’t think you should miss:
- NBC has posted casting information and the application here. They have all the casting news and information on a special blog just for Biggest Loser casting, which you can find here.
- Pete Thomas, the season 2 $100,000 winner has some of the best casting call advice out there, which you can find at his website, Winning Man.
- Jen Kerns, a season three contestant like myself, and a doctor for the show for seasons four and five, has also put together some fantastic casting advice that you can read here.
- Holland, a casting director for Biggest Loser sent me a bunch of great advice on how to be casted, you can find it here. She updated them October, 2009.
- I’ve been posting these casting tips for the last few seasons and they always seem to end up with thousands of comments; just about every season has contestants that were hanging out on here, reading and giving each other thoughts and advice. You can find the most recent one here.
- If you’re dealing with disappointment about not being cast, then check out my post on Biggest Loser casting disappointment.
One of the questions I hear a lot is about money … how do contestants afford to be away from home and work for months at a time? I don’t know what it is now, but when I was a contestant there was a $500 a week stipend for cast members on the ranch. When you received the check you could cash it and spend it, send it home, save it, whatever. All airplane tickets, hotel accommodations, etc., for the contestants and potential cast members are taken care of by NBC, and during the casting process it self there was a $50 per diem to cover food costs.
Another question is timing; typically a season lasts for about 8-9 months. About four of this is spent in filming; if you last all the way until the final three or four, you could be away from home for as much as four months or so. Once the ranch filming wraps and the last few contestants are sent home, however, there is still another four or five months that all the contestants have to continue losing weight until the finale. In addition, potential cast members are flown out to California a couple weeks before filming begins for the final round of casting, medical checkups, psychological evals, etc. NBC brings out more people than what they need and the cast is not finalized until filming literally begins. People have been cut at the last minute and replacements flown in with hardly any time to spare. Nothing is in stone until it’s on camera!
When will you hear from Biggest Loser about your video? There is no way of knowing. I heard back a few weeks after I sent it in, but even after that it’s a big waiting game. If you get a phone number or email from a casting direction, definitely drop them a line/call every couple weeks to find out if you’re still in the running or what’s going on. Schedules and plans change almost every day, so it’s easy to get lost in the shuffle. If you don’t hear back within a month I would think your video didn’t make the cut. That doesn’t mean you can’t send in another or visit a casting call – it’s just up to you!
Finally, here’s my video application tips! This is by no means a recipe for success; it’s based on my video application and the conversations I had with casting directors out in LA in between things. I was pretty curious about the whole process so I was pumping them for info even after filming began. I’m such a nerd!
-
They’ve usually decided if they’re interested in you within the first 30-60 seconds of your video, so front load it with your best stuff. Make it interesting! Start off with something funny or exciting!
-
Keep in mind, if you’re going to be cast, your video is going to be watched hundreds of times by producers, executives, casting directors, etc. If it bores you or your friends the second or third time watching it … put some more time into it!
-
Special effects? Don’t bother! We’ve all got video editing software with all sorts of bells and whistles on our home computers, but fancy transitions are not going to sell you to people who do video editing for a living. In fact, it can distract from who you are. I’m a video editing nerd and I didn’t use any special effects other than putting my name and contact info on as a subtitle at the beginning.
-
Don’t bother talking about why you need to lose weight. When I first started filming my audition video I started describing all of my health reasons for losing weight – but when I was watching it back, I realized … they don’t need to hear it! One look at me was all they needed to know I needed to lose weight! Show them why you need to lose it; I said I needed to lose weight for my kids, and then I followed it with a minute or two of the best footage I could find of me with wrestling with my three boys. We probably filmed half an hour of that insanity and I grabbed the cutest, loudest, and funniest few moments for the audition video. Your physical need to lose weight is not nearly as interesting as who or what your losing the weight for.
-
Live loud! Reality TV is over the top, dramatic, and filled with loud personalities. They need to see that on your video! I wanted them to know that even though I was morbidly obese I was up to the challenge of the crazy competitions and workouts – so I threw on a bunch of clips from my different youth group activities; me getting slimed, snowtubing, playing paintball, screaming at events, being on stage, running around … you get the idea. Other contestants did things appropriate to their lives; Tim from Oregon had himself spinning out on his Harley, Tim from Delaware recruited his elementary school class to do things with him, Heather Hanson filmed herself running around in a sports bra all day doing her household chores and errands. The less talking and more action you can have, the better (in my opinion)!
-
If you have footage or photos of yourself thin, include those at some point on the video. If you can show them what your after will be, then do it!
Remember, enjoy the conversation here and know that I will never compromise your anonymity – not to NBC, 3Ball, Casting Directors or anyone. You can post anonymously, or you can leave your names and contact information … just remember that NBC likes to be the one announcing their cast for the show, so if you start identifying yourself publicly as a finalist, you’ll probably find yourself eliminated from the casting process. Be aware that casting directors do check in at my blog to see what people are saying, get a feel for what questions are going on out there, and sometimes to give us updates. Good luck to everyone … and let me know if you make the show! I get a kick out of hearing about the different contestants that have hung out on my blog before making the show! ![]()

@hoping, I should reread, but I don't have time AND I post over because lots of people are still thinking they are in the running, when most in it would have had some contact by now, it's time to start realizing that you might not have made it, why give BL anymore time of your life, move on and if they call out of the blue, then great but if not, why waste one more day wating on BL! 🙂
Hoping, go work out and you wont feel so exhausted 🙂 If you don't like my post dont read them, they are meant for those who are interested in what I have to say 😀
@ShawnajoyRose
I may be saying what alot are thinking. I believe it was you who said they wanted to be famous and that was one of the main reasons for Casting on BL, X Factor, and anything else you've casted for. You seem to be way too hung up on self-promotion than anything else. Sorry, it just rubs me the wrong way. Youre right, I dont have to read your long posts; but I guess I'm just looking for any benneficial new info you may have… still looking.
Who on the show right were McNutties? I know there is at least one, but I don't remember which one. Hannah?
Courtney was for sure… and Sarah had that blog many of us read before it got taken down (so I don't know if she was a part of this blog, or someone discovered her blog and shared it on here). I also think Jennifer may have been… but I'm not positive.
@tempted I've also heard what you said above and I could totally understand, up to the point that I started critiquing videos, when word got out that I was doing this for people, I got those who had been contacted by BL casting team to move forward and to submit more footage, they privately emailed me and I've kept all confidentiality but it did give me a chance to see that BL does have specifics that they are looking for and even if they gave us a general indication of what they were, this could keep many from getting their hopes up and feeling crushed, discouraged, and hitting lows at the end of the casting season when they put all they knew to put into their videos/attending casting calls and come up not making the show.
I think their casting process is causing loyal viewers to get frustrated with them and to NOT want to watch the show. I've talked to many who have contacted me saying that they have no desire to even watch BL anymore and that is not good, because BL could be a positive way to help inspire others to take their lives back and lose weight.
I wish the BL casting process could be like some of the other shows, where they give deadlines to hear by, or they tell you yes or no, when they see you.
I mean why can't they tell you "no", if you don't fit what they are looking for. They don't have to explain, but if they don't see you being a fit, tell you, "I'm sorry but it's a no".
AND, no one can tell me any different, because I've talked to enough, to know that this happenes, some have reported that the way the team talks to them, they feel like they are for sure making the show, and they get their hopes up sooooo high and that when they start realizing that no one is calling them back or responding to their emails, then they hit horrible, and depressing lows, it's very sad, and I hate to see people suffering like this.
WHY lead people on for soooooo long, we are talking months. I say post deadlines and let people know, so they can know when it is over for them.
I'm just saying that they way the casting process is working now, lots and lots of loyal followers of the show, are getting heart broken and no longer finding the show inspiring but a reminder of the pain they felt during the casting process.
@ hoping, I never said I wanted to be famous, I think that was some dumb dumb here who was trying to say mean things to me, because I was telling everyone here about other casting opportunities
Now, I recently saw a new one for overweight individuals, now, wouldn't you want to know of every opportunity you could have to get help to lose weight?
Weight was my main goal, but now I'm losing the weight and feeling great and I love to sing and X Factor is the lastest thing that any and all music artist are into! IT's fun, and crazy and it's going to be an awesome show 😀
I love and enjoy seeing what shows are out there, how many reality show stars become famous? it's just fun and after many years of having to deal with being sick, I am feeling better and I want to have some fun now
Now, I know this is a frustrating time for those in the BL casting process, AND, I know that you and other's want to hear any NEW news, but those who are in contact WILL NOT RISK TALKING HERE, THEY ARE SPECIFICALLY TOLD NOT TO, AT LEAST THOSE I'VE TALKED TO, I DON'T BREAK CONFIDENCE AND OTHERS KNOW THAT AND EMAIL ME ON FACEBOOK, I LOVE THE SHOW, BUT I HATE, HATE, AND EVEN MORE HATE, SEEING THE INDIVIDUALS HIT LOWS AFTER REALIZING THEY DIDN'T MAKE THE SHOW!
No, one has any new news but Holland, saying that if you have not heard from someone on their team in the last few weeks then you are probably out and also for those who sent vids in the last month, you may still have a chance.
@ShawnajoyRose
I can't read your posts either, simply because it IS the same thing over and over again. And while I agree TO A POINT that it's better to just not say anything at all if what you're about to say could be construed as 'mean' neither should we be bombarded with what amounts to little more than a rambling journal entry.
You HAVE said that all you care about is getting on a reality show. That's fine, but admit it if someone deigns to call you out on it.
And PLEASE stop commenting on your video 'critiques'! Until you've made the show and can truly offer some insight, the 'critiques' mean absolutely nothing.
Sorry to be mean, but enough is enough. You've already started a blog (after stealing Holland's moniker, no less)… Can you write pages of "info" there and save this blog for real, pertinent info?
@JustWaiting
DELURKING:
I have to agree with you. Shawna has been on this blog a few Seasons in one name or another and seems like a nice caring person, but her posts do tend to drag on a bit with not a lot of pertinent new info relevant to what is going on here. Shawna, please continue posting, just keep it simple pertinent NEW facts, thats all. Dont take this bad, just take it as constructive criticism.

I would say this is a great blog "critique"
What happened to the positive energies? Though I agree with you all, I still say that the only people that truly know what is happening at 3Ball, are those still working on the show. It can be very frustrating for anyone who has ever gone through this process, whether it is the first time or the whatever number you are on. It is hours of video, splicing, filling our paperwork, deciding on pictures, etc. In all of this, despite the outcome it is important to take a look at it all and be proud of yourself if for no other reason, than that you have taken the first step towards the rest of your life. You have admitted that you need and want help to become a healthier you. Take that and run with it. When the next season comes around maybe you'll be big enough, maybe not. Don't let it stop with this season of casting. Take the next step, no matter how small it may seem. Whether it is parking further away, or just eliminating something from your current diet, something is better than nothing. No one gains all of this overnight, and it isnt gonna melt away overnight either. Good luck and God bless you all.
Got 3 more views than yesterday. Guess I'll know tomorrow if they are from Cali. I've had 8 new views in the last week (not counting the new 3) and they're all from people looking at other people's videos. Of the 8 total California views since I first uploaded my video, none of them are from the link I sent via email. So I just don't know. It's been true in past seasons that they did watch every video (idk how much of every video but I'm sure 30 seconds to a minute can tell you if you like a person or not); I hope that remains true for this season b/c I would, at least, like my submission acknowledged.
Awww-sad….. Some negativity here. We can always pass up comments if they are long or we think they are redundant. No need to be mean or hurt the feelings of those people posting. Unless you are Matt, I don't think anyone should place rules on this blog about how much can be posted or what should be posted. Just read the comments that you want to read, from the people you want. Ignore the rest. No need to be mean.
As the song says, "Where is the love?"…..
God Bless-
Today's the day…. maybe, who knows!? Good luck to everyone and hopefully someone hears some awesome news today!
Look everyone things are getting so far fetched and out of hand here! Let's face we are all FAT!! and what unfortunately comes with that is some self confidence/they won't pick me issues. None of you know why when and how they are working things out because they most likely are unsure. It's simple if you have been 1 on 1 camera interviewed, filled out the long background form, online bio asked to submit home tape and got the May 6th email you are still in the running! Let's stop driving ourselves mad conspiracy theorizing and assuming anything and just live, hope and be who we are. It is all about what they are a looking not a slight on who you are! Let's keep our heads up and smile knowing some of us still have a chance.
Just got an email from 3 ball that I am out…NBC pitches are done.
@Hmmmmmm
Post it!
@Hmmmmmm
Yes Please Do!
@Hmmmmmm
Share your full experience!
@Hmmmmmm
You're a team right? Did you email them to ask? I didn't think they were considering any teams…
@Hmmmmmm
So sorry…
I emailed and they responded that NBC passed on me. I was a team.
@justwaiting, I think some of yall are just freaking out and being mean due to the BL pressure, I can absolutely guarantee you that those who I've critiqued were VERY grateful, especially the ones whose sent in vids and got call backs, I don't really care if you believe me or not and I post because this site in the past and still now helped me transition from being a victim to obesity to living free and enjoying life, there was a huge support here and I dont post to give JUST info, I post to express myself, (support system) and also to help others, if it doesn't help you, then that's your loss
I don't know where you get that all I care about is getting on a reality show! I know what I've done my whole life, since 11 years old I've done volunter work, at 11 years old, my pastor placed me in the children's church as a helper, and since then, I've always helped people, I've been a senior pastor, children's and youth minister during interim periods, I've lead praise and worship, I've been a special education teacher, I hold a BA in Religious Studies and Humanities (that is helping people yall), I have a masters in Educational Psychology and was working on a second in School Psychology to be a school psychologist when I started writing children's books, in addition I've done theraputic foster care, I spent two years fighting for children's rights in Guatemala and adopting a child, since 11 I've been helping others and that is my heart, all I did was share with this site other opportunities to have a chance to get cast on a weight loss show or other reality shows, I don't know why some get upset at me and feel the need to be dumb and say mean things but believe I am a pretty tough girl, and the reason I don't really get into it with those who are meanies is because I have a background in psychology, I know that there is a reason for your behavior and I want everyone, including those who are negative to break free from obesity and depression and anything that controls there life.
You might only want this site for info, but to me this site has been a bridge and support over two years for me. Maybe two years ago, the meanies would have bothered me, but not now, I'm getting free, I'm winning my fight against obesity and I really just hope that everyone here can win their fight too.
In fact, I have a support group for anyone who wants to join! I also developed a healthy living program, that anyone can do, just get your doctor's approval and it just may help you fight obesity too, just like me 😀 Find me on Facebook! Master Casters Fat Blasters! 😀
@bigfatguy I can post whatever I want on this blog, just like any of you can! I'm a postive person and I've been so busy lately, I haven't even had time to really visit this site often.
I honestly feel, yall are freaking out due to the BL casting process and taking swings at me.
any time I post, anything, someone on here, lol, tries to attack me, I see that as a cry for help, why do you feel the need to say mean things to someone who is only posting post to help people? what some of you don't understand is that there are many lurkers and a lot of others who won't post here, they are in the same place as some of you, waiting, they may not know to read back over all the pages, or maybe they need to hear it again, I post when I feel the need to post and when I want to post, and when I have time, if you want to follow my blogs, go follow my blogs, or follow me on facebook, if I want to post here, I will.
@hmmmm
I'm sorry
@Hmmmmmm
Who did you e-mail?
Omg… lol! Thank you for proving our point.
@Hmmmmmm
I am so sorry to hear that! I am part of a team too….not too excited about that at this point……
@justwaiting You're Welcome 😉
First time delurker…..I just can't stay silent any longer
SJ Rose,
I'm sorry that you're feeling attacked. I'm not sure that you are, in fact, 'attacked' EVERY time you post and I'm not sure that everyone who has responded meant to make you feel attacked (though, for some it would be a stretch to find any heart in their words). It seemed to me that some of those people were attempting to offer constructive criticism for what they perceived as (my interpretation) constant self-promotion, ineffective communication style and unsophisicated social skills. My perception is low self-esteem, desperation and loneliness.
Is it possible that your communication style leaves you misinterpretted? Is it possible that there is something going on with you that you have an overwhelming need to be 'in front' of people, either through your videos or the written word? Is it possible that the helping, of which you have clearly done much of…for your whole life…is a defense mechanism to gain affirmation that you are 'good' or 'good enough'? That's how I interpretted your desire to apply for so many reality shows…a need for someone to tell you you are good enough. Is any of that possible? Or am I freaking out too…even though I already know I'm out of the running?
We all have things to work on in ourselves and to make a blanket statement that EVERYONE else is wrong, mean, freaking out, tells me that you may be trying to deflect what you already know needs to be healed in your own story.
I'm not trying to be harsh or condescending, but fear that this could come across that way. I have to admit that part of my mission (as a helper as well) is to help people see reality instead of looking at things through the dysfunction of their own perception….and it takes a community (such as this) to make that happen. Perhaps this is the next phase of your healing process. We already know, from BL at least, that the weight we all carry is not just about behaviors. You can change your behaviors all you want, but until you work on the deep-seated hurts and roots of your obesity, the change will not 'stick.' I'm hopeful that, if you let it be, this could be the key for you….but you have to choose to listen rather than to become defensive and accusing.
Honestly, I don't need or want a response…I just want you to think about the questions I posed…really think about them and take what fits and work on it and discard the rest. Please trust that I know what I"m talking about…our paths are very similar except that I completed one of those degrees that you were working toward.
Be blessed and know that you are already good enough…you don't have to prove it to anyone.
Ooops, my apologies…we have similar degrees only I specialize in working with adults.

I know of several teams who have gotten split up. CD's contacted the teams and requested specific video footage of one member of the groups. Not saying I have any more info beyond that, or that they are going couples only or groups only, just that there have been several teams that have been split up.
OMG DelurkerII, you had me laughing my butt off, LOL! 😀 You guys are crazy, LOL, OMG!
I'm sure if you were really worried about little ole me, you wouldn't be so condescending, lol 🙂
counseling 101, lol, is empathy (rapport), LOL, all you said, OMG, this is hillarious is an attack to try and sound professional, OMG, I can't stop laughing, honey bee, I can see right through that 😀
I'm very satisfied with my life, and love to help others 🙂
Why are you lurking if you are already out? I'm the only one here, I think that has a face with my name?
Sounds like you need a little fresher upper, so here it is, "Rapport is a term used to describe, in common terms, that two or more people feel in sync or on the same wavelength because they feel alike"
Your ummm comment, was a comment to swing at someone, to prove your point, etc, not to try and find common ground with someone, that common ground/empathy/rapport is what is used if you really care about someone, want to help them
Empathy and rapport are not the same thing.
But I'm glad to see you took a full 13 minutes to really think about what was said. I think DelurkerII nailed it.
@justwaiting, did I say that empathy and rapport are the same thing? they are both used in counseling when you want to help people
just teaching a lesson that's it 😉
So, just waiting what is your story, are you a couple or single?
@Hmmmmmm
I was passed by NBC as well….I was a single.
@ShawnajoyRose
I am getting frustrated by the things people are saying to you.. you have nothing but good intentions on here and offer so much support that I can't understand why people have the need to criticize what you are writing on a blog that should be ELECTIVE in their lives. It's really ridiculous and childish to me. If people spent half of the time and effort figuring out their own problems as they do trying to figure out yours, they probably wouldn't be needing to apply to BL. If this is any foreshadowing of what people at the ranch will be like this season it will be a huge disappointment.
Sorry guys…didn't mean to be short. I'm just irritated. I had emailed a CD a few weeks ago and they just responded to that email…not sure if all finalists have been called yet, but I gave a feeling the calls have been made! Good luck to all and @shawna…girl, u need a different hobby… Peace out fellow fatties!!!!
@sugar + @Hmmmmmm — assuming you were both "well along in the typical casting progress" and have just heard back that you weren't chosen, was this a result of an inquiry initiated by you, or did you receive notice from one of the known decision makers? I'm just curious.
@sugar
Did you contact them? If so who did you e-mail?
If not what did the e-mail say? Can you post it here? Who was it from
thanks and sorry you didnt make it
For those of you starting to get word that you are out, I am very sorry to hear that. Its getting down to the wire so I am sure most of what we hear will be "sorry" or nothing at all. This season (more than ever) I am so anxious to see who the Decision Makers at NBC decided to go with. I think that after all the criticism for Season 11 the cast of BL12 is sooooo important in the outcome of the show. I know that we will prob not hear from any of our fellow Mcnutties that make the show but it sure is fun to wonder.
@ShawnajoyRose
Most of it was only constructive critisism. Something it seems you have a tough time accepting. You even went after BFG and he was actually nice about it. I'm not a psycholisgt, but perhaps this is something you should look into.
Awfully quiet today. Wonder if its happened for anyone?
Holy Cow!!! I was just thinking the same thing!! 🙂
@Tempted
Maybe we are the only two that didn't make it.
🙂 Possible:) Can't make it if they don't view your video, and mine still hasn't been viewed!!!
….I kinda feel like we're all sitting around waiting for the ball to drop…
I don't know why I'm even frequenting this sight, as I am not even being considered at this point! And if I pretend for a minute that they watch my video this afternoon… think I am amazing and absolutely have to be on the show (which is not very likely) the chances of making this season are next to NOTHING!!! NBC must be at least leaning toward a select few.
I feel you guys.. i been lookin on here but haven't posted anything until now… hopefully we all hear back today or soon so that the whole situation can finally be laid to rest… Good luck to all my fellow fatties out there… im planning on making a lifestyle change if i dont make it to the show starting this monday and hope that every1 on here has success in trying to drop some poundage… Good luck to everybody!!
As of this morning, I officially cannot talk about BL anymore and things are now starting to pick up pace! Shocked to say the least!
I can't say much but I will say this, remember what Holland said, move on with your life and if you get a call, then that will be a great surprise!
Wish you all luck, I won't forget about this site or the positive people here or Matthew! Yall were awesome 😀
@ShawnajoyRose
so you got a call I assume
I have a friend that got contacted and said that Monday they would be contacting the finalists.
