Biggest Loser casting tips (season 12)

Biggest Loser is now casting for season 12!  Casting calls will be announced in January, so stay tuned.  Basically, this post is a collection of tips I’ve written based on my experience making the cast of season three, as well as some links to casting advice I don’t think you should miss:

  • NBC has posted casting information and the application here.  They have all the casting news and information on a special blog just for Biggest Loser casting, which you can find here.
  • Pete Thomas, the season 2 $100,000 winner has some of the best casting call advice out there, which you can find at his website, Winning Man.
  • Jen Kerns, a season three contestant like myself, and a doctor for the show for seasons four and five, has also put together some fantastic casting advice that you can read here.
  • Holland, a casting director for Biggest Loser sent me a bunch of great advice on how to be casted, you can find it here.  She updated them October, 2009.
  • I’ve been posting these casting tips for the last few seasons and they always seem to end up with thousands of comments; just about every season has contestants that were hanging out on here, reading and giving each other thoughts and advice.  You can find the most recent one here.
  • If you’re dealing with disappointment about not being cast, then check out my post on Biggest Loser casting disappointment.

One of the questions I hear a lot is about money … how do contestants afford to be away from home and work for months at a time? I don’t know what it is now, but when I was a contestant there was a $500 a week stipend for cast members on the ranch. When you received the check you could cash it and spend it, send it home, save it, whatever. All airplane tickets, hotel accommodations, etc., for the contestants and potential cast members are taken care of by NBC, and during the casting process it self there was a $50 per diem to cover food costs.

Another question is timing; typically a season lasts for about 8-9 months. About four of this is spent in filming; if you last all the way until the final three or four, you could be away from home for as much as four months or so. Once the ranch filming wraps and the last few contestants are sent home, however, there is still another four or five months that all the contestants have to continue losing weight until the finale. In addition, potential cast members are flown out to California a couple weeks before filming begins for the final round of casting, medical checkups, psychological evals, etc. NBC brings out more people than what they need and the cast is not finalized until filming literally begins. People have been cut at the last minute and replacements flown in with hardly any time to spare. Nothing is in stone until it’s on camera!

When will you hear from Biggest Loser about your video? There is no way of knowing. I heard back a few weeks after I sent it in, but even after that it’s a big waiting game. If you get a phone number or email from a casting direction, definitely drop them a line/call every couple weeks to find out if you’re still in the running or what’s going on. Schedules and plans change almost every day, so it’s easy to get lost in the shuffle. If you don’t hear back within a month I would think your video didn’t make the cut. That doesn’t mean you can’t send in another or visit a casting call – it’s just up to you!

Finally, here’s my video application tips! This is by no means a recipe for success; it’s based on my video application and the conversations I had with casting directors out in LA in between things. I was pretty curious about the whole process so I was pumping them for info even after filming began. I’m such a nerd!

  • They’ve usually decided if they’re interested in you within the first 30-60 seconds of your video, so front load it with your best stuff. Make it interesting! Start off with something funny or exciting!
  • Keep in mind, if you’re going to be cast, your video is going to be watched hundreds of times by producers, executives, casting directors, etc. If it bores you or your friends the second or third time watching it … put some more time into it!
  • Special effects? Don’t bother! We’ve all got video editing software with all sorts of bells and whistles on our home computers, but fancy transitions are not going to sell you to people who do video editing for a living. In fact, it can distract from who you are. I’m a video editing nerd and I didn’t use any special effects other than putting my name and contact info on as a subtitle at the beginning.
  • Don’t bother talking about why you need to lose weight. When I first started filming my audition video I started describing all of my health reasons for losing weight – but when I was watching it back, I realized … they don’t need to hear it! One look at me was all they needed to know I needed to lose weight! Show them why you need to lose it; I said I needed to lose weight for my kids, and then I followed it with a minute or two of the best footage I could find of me with wrestling with my three boys. We probably filmed half an hour of that insanity and I grabbed the cutest, loudest, and funniest few moments for the audition video. Your physical need to lose weight is not nearly as interesting as who or what your losing the weight for.
  • Live loud! Reality TV is over the top, dramatic, and filled with loud personalities. They need to see that on your video! I wanted them to know that even though I was morbidly obese I was up to the challenge of the crazy competitions and workouts – so I threw on a bunch of clips from my different youth group activities; me getting slimed, snowtubing, playing paintball, screaming at events, being on stage, running around … you get the idea. Other contestants did things appropriate to their lives; Tim from Oregon had himself spinning out on his Harley, Tim from Delaware recruited his elementary school class to do things with him, Heather Hanson filmed herself running around in a sports bra all day doing her household chores and errands. The less talking and more action you can have, the better (in my opinion)!
  • If you have footage or photos of yourself thin, include those at some point on the video. If you can show them what your after will be, then do it!

Remember, enjoy the conversation here and know that I will never compromise your anonymity – not to NBC, 3Ball, Casting Directors or anyone. You can post anonymously, or you can leave your names and contact information … just remember that NBC likes to be the one announcing their cast for the show, so if you start identifying yourself publicly as a finalist, you’ll probably find yourself eliminated from the casting process. Be aware that casting directors do check in at my blog to see what people are saying, get a feel for what questions are going on out there, and sometimes to give us updates. Good luck to everyone … and let me know if you make the show! I get a kick out of hearing about the different contestants that have hung out on my blog before making the show! ;)

    Hey Everyone,

As a previous finalist for another season i can say that when i made finals i received the call Thursday night and was flown out 2 Monday's later. Now i don't know how different the process is for everyone, so i don't want people assuming that if they didn't get the call last night then they are out. I do remember that they posted that finalists would be contacted between friday and saturday of one weekend but i found out on that Thursday.

Good luck to everyone this weekend, if this is the weekend you should find out!!!!

I am not sure I could watch a show with ShawnajoyRose on it. No offense.

  3. @ponderponder

I'm guessing you you speak for the majority lol

  4. I don't think she got it to be honest with you

  5. Can she do X factor and biggest loser at the same time??? I wouldn't think so…

  6. Also, she may have simply gotten some contact … not necessarily a finalist call.

  7. There is nothing on FB or twitter about anyone being contacted today.

  8. ponderponder Avatar

No all finalists have not been contacted yet. Yes we are still making decisions. Yes its true @JillianMichaels last season with BL is #BL11

    thats from twitter……

  9. Holland shared, on twitter, that all finalists have NOT been notified and that they are still watching videos.

@curious…doubtful. Finalists are instructed not to make their selection known and could set themselves up to be disqualified if they do.

  10. Whoops sorry…didn't realize I was sharing redundant information.

Well…I've now been UNWATCHED in Sweden too.

At this point, I've had a total of 10 hits and they're only recording Florida and Germany.

    .

Does anyone happen to know how one goes about UNWATCHING a YouTube video? Just curious…

  13. @rubinmytub

She did NOT make finals… she was nowhere in the 'process' and has said as much many times. And she did NOT get anywhere with X Factor either… she said the casting guy was nice but said no. The casting people on BL are not idiots… anyone that… shall we say 'outspoken'??… will simply not make the show. You can't force your way into the spotlight. And really, someone who actually makes finals will disappear without a word – if they have half a brain.

And my guess is her two 'master's degrees' are a figment of her imagination, as well. I'd be will to bet my master's degree on it..lol

  14. Finalists will know on monday

  15. @JustWaiting

    Mine too! Lol

    @Hmmmmmm

How do you know, precisely? I believe you indicated you were not in the running, so can you disclose why you are so certain? If you cannot for fear of future casting opportunities, I'll understand, but you've made a number of "certain" statements without additional information. Any information would be appreciated.

  17. @JustWaiting

She did not claim that she made finals, guys!!!!She just can't talk about BL any more. 🙂 I think she is trying to say she was contacted and is all of a sudden "in the process".

Her greatest asset to BL is her ethnicity. They struggle (almost) every season to get good people of different ethnicities. They have way too many white female applicants, and unfortunately need more of all the others! IMO.

  18. @Tempted

I teach social skills (don't worry, I'm much nicer to kids..lol)… so my inferential skills are intact. She was 'letting us know' that she's in the running, and at this point I think it's pretty clear that any notifications are finals-related. So, no… she didn't come right out and say, "I made finals!", but that's definitely what she was indicating. I, personally, do not believe it for a split sec!

As for ethnicity, I could make a very long list of all the non-white women they've had on the show! Carla, Joelle, Irene, Nicole, Kaylee, Shay, Ada, Miggy (and her anger-management-needing daughter)… that's just off the top of my head. I'm not saying what's needed or lacking, but I do think the execs at NBC are very aware of their demographics and cater to that.

  19. @Hmmmmmm How do you know they will be called Monday?

  20. @JustWaiting

I strongly disagree with you that the only notifications at this point are for finals.

And you are helping make my point– they need the ethnicity for their demographics. I am willing to bet they have gone back and "re-visited" her videos and decided to pitch her because NBC didn't like who they brought to the table initially.

I don't think you have a full understanding of the process or how they operate based on what you post!

  21. @Tempted

Feel free to enlighten me with your 'full understanding' then. By all means 🙂

  22. @NotSureWhatToThink

People still in the running have already received the dr. Notes and their tentative travel plans…guys, if u don't have these, it's not good!!!

  23. @JustWaiting

🙂 The information is all over the place…

And I am not an author… no intention of writing a book!

  24. @Hmmmmmm

You are still making claims and not backing them up. What up with that??

  25. @Hmmmmmm

seriously, you need to start backing up your claims. I know for a fact not everyone has to see their personal doctor to be a finalist. My partner was a season 8 finalist and she was flown out without it. I think those applicants with moderate to severe medical issues need to see their own doc first.

  26. Oh well, I guess the decisions have been made. As you will all see…life will go on. I would never watch anything with that woman who is obsessed with posting here or on Holands fb page. I quit looking on the fb page bc of her annoying posts. Maybe they gired her to work in casting or critique videos since she knows so much.

Good luck everyone. Signing off forever.

  27. @Tempted

You guys: what more can I say other than I know two people who were given dr. requests and tentative travel plans and were told they would have decisions by Monday! I'm sorry I can't send the emails because I didn't get them!! I'm just trying to let you guys know that things are coming to a wrap!!!!

  28. @Hmmmmmm

We already know things are coming to a wrap! Like it has been said a thousand times… casting goes differently for everyone.

Knowing 2 people who have gotten requests and tentative travel plans does not mean all finalists have been notified. Have they been told they are finalists? Also… were they told a decision would be made about THEM or about all finalists?

  29. Its really getting nasty on this blog — it aint over until they make the announcement that everyone has been called, until then just a lot of BS and conjecture

  30. @Tempted

I think Hmmmmmm is right. I heard it from a friend of mine who is still in. All will be known on Monday…

He probably cannot say more because of they read this…

  31. I've had a spike in video views over the last 24-48 hours, 11 new views. Only 2 can be accounted for right now using the insight option and those 2 are from Massachusetts. I wonder how many, if any, of the other 9 views are the coveted California hit b/c, as of now, that still hasn't happened. :/

  32. Hmmmmmm has been a trusted participant on this board so I am inclined to believe what's being said. This season's casting has stretched longer than most of the previous Spring castings. People are usually on the ranch by now, taping not sequestering. It makes sense that finalists will know they are finalists by next week and w/in 2 weeks be either on the ranch or on a plane going home. That still falls in line w/ what Holland said earlier, finalist will know by the end of May. Two weeks from the 9th is the 23rd. I'd say that constitutes as the end of May (shy of a week).

  33. I have been an avid "lurker" of this blog and consider myself a mcnuttie or maybe have gone a lil nutty but I have enjoyed the speculation and insights and would like to share my story and journey.

I was called on 3/31/11 and was told that they LOVED my video and I was asked to send in potential partner info and was told that if it was a singles season I was "in the mix". I sent in the info and was asked for a little more (not background or bio) and that was it. I emailed the CD on 4/15 and asked if there was anything else they needed and received the response "I will let you know…nothing needed right now!" SOO with that I have moved on…

The reason I shared this is because I was told by the CD that she wished she could use this video as an example, it grabbed their attention and contained all of the info that they needed and kept their attention. GOOD LUCK to EVERYONE on your journey whatever it may be!!

    @Need Help!

I sure hope you really know you are "OUT", cause I thought your video was so AWESOME and the last thing I would want is to see you eliminated because you jumped the gun and introduced yourself to us.

Have you ever heard, it's NOT over until the cameras start taping?

    You've got a great story…

    Please, protect yourself.

  35. Insight just updated. & of the 11 new hits were from my students (I'm sure) and the other 4 were from random states. No Cali hit yet. 🙁

  36. @Need Help!

I agree w/ @Girl Scout Thin Mint Cookie Blizzard Lover , unless you've been told you're out, you're not out, especially considering that you have been in contact w/ them w/in the last 3 weeks. Go on w/ your life, yes, but to hold tight to the string dangling from that balloon of hope.

  37. @Need Help!

You stated "…she wish she could use "This" video as an example". Just to make clear, is this your video or someone elses you and the CD found? If it is yours it is really good. If youre not in the running I have no idea what the hell theyre looking for…excellant!

  38. @Need Help!

I agree w/ @Girl Scout Thin Mint Cookie Blizzard Lover , unless you’ve been told you’re out, you’re not out, especially considering that you have been in contact w/ them w/in the last 3 weeks. Go on w/ your life, yes, but to hold tight to the string dangling from that balloon of hope.

  39. @ hoping, yes this is my video (:

@wanna see and Girl scout thanks and yes I am holding on to a glimmer of hope but given the fact that it has been said many times on this blog, twitter and on a discussion on Hollands FB that if you have not been asked for background/bio then "more than likely you are not being considered for this season". I have been realistic and drawn to this conclusion to keep from being devastated.

BUT….should I receive that coveted phone call I will be more than overwhelmed and VERY discreet with this information. I have shared this so that the ones who plan on trying out in future season would have at least an idea of what grabs their attention!

Well, I do believe the time has come. A friend was on season 8 of the Biggest Loser. She said she left on Mothers day flying out from Dallas for finals. They are already behind that schedule. My partner and

    continued…

My partner and I were pitched to NBC last season and had been verbally told we were going to finals (to find out in the end they passed on us) and they were about a week later than they had originally said.

When we did call back interview we were told this time at the hotel they would be notifying the last week of April, then just like last year thats been pushed back. I dont see how it could be any later than this week. (we were split and only my partner was pitched).

  42. However, they're still watching video. For this S12 or S13, I don't know. But Holland/The BL Casting Team did say yesterday that they were STILL watching video, which is so hard to believe b/c they received the last of them a month ago tomorrow. But it is true that they do watch them all and mine has yet to be watched.

  43. Is everyone ready with a backup plan? In past seasons, McNutties have planned to get together via FB to do their own competition. I don't know if that ever happened. I'm going to start my own competition in a couple weeks if I don't make it on the show.

I am still hoping I am in it. I'll live, of course, if I am not chosen. Just gutting up and admitting I do not know how to extricate myself from my own weight gain, and I need help was huge for me. I thank my past BL casting partner for asking me last year — as pissed as I was that I was the only colleague "fat enough" for the game.

I was on a plane today. It is crazy that all I wish is that I had my FLIP camera out to catch the looks of the people as they passed my tall, fat ass squeezed in the aisle seat and the woman with the infant on the bulkhead seat. What a cliche, and I was a part of it! I was more amused than embarrassed, and then embarrassed again as I realized I thought of it as more of a casting opportunity, rather than a warning. It was interesting that I did not need the seatbelt extension — a slice of Chicago deep dish away from needing one, but still a small victory.

    I wish you all luck.

  46. The Biggest Loser is my Plan B. I'm currently working on my Plan A and have been doing so since late December. I get in, at least, half an hour of cardio 3-5 times a week. And have managed to shed 30+lbs since. But I've been hitting a plateau, gaining and losing the same 3 or 4lbs for over a month now.

Just this past week, I got involved in a 30/30/30 30 Day Challenge on FaceBook. It is where you do any 3 exercises for 30 reps for 30 straight days. I mix it up and often do more than 3 exercises. The different exercises include: lunges, squats, 30 minutes of walking, pushups, situps, crunches, leg lifts, jumping jacks, toe raises, bicep curls, tricep curls, lateral arm raises, 30 second plank, etc. Cardio is where you burn fat so I try to incorporate that during most days.

When these 30 days are over, if I'm not on the ranch, I plan to then move on to Jillian Michael's 30 Day Shred or Jeanette Jenkins: Hollywood Trainer 21 Day Total Body Circuit. And then switch for the next month.

What's interesting is that I shrunk and I don't know how. I used to be 5'7" but now I've measured at 5' 5 1/2". So now I'm not supposed to weigh 135lbs but 125lbs. Great. I have exactly 100lbs to lose to get there. In truth, I would be really happy with being 150lbs.

Interesting claim… views show up from every other computer…

    suddenly doesn't work?…. hmmmmm…. 🙂
