OKAY PEOPLE, I’VE LOCKED THIS THREAD DOWN … BECAUSE IT GOT JUST TOO DARN BIG! I’VE POSTED A NEW CASTING TIPS BLOG ENTRY AND YOU CAN CONTINUE THE CONVERSATION THERE … HERE’S THE LINK: Biggest Loser Casting Tips (season 8, page 2).
Well, it’s official!Ā Casting has begun for season eight of Biggest Loser!Ā Feel free to discuss, post questions, compare notes, etc.!Ā NBC has posted casting information and the application here.
To find my original casting tips post which contains the video application advice youāll see below as well as over a thousand comments worth of discussion, click here.Ā Stacy, Adam, Phil, Amy and Coleen were all reading and posting in the discussion there – it’s fun to look back and realize they were some of the superstars of season six!Ā To find my second post (fairly identical to this one), with well over two thousand comments worth of discussion, click here.Ā I was cast on season three because of my video – Iāve never actually been to a casting call.Ā And if youāre dealing with disappointment about not being cast, then check out my post on Biggest Loser casting disappointment.
One of the questions I hear a lot is about money ⦠how do contestants afford to be away from home and work for months at a time?Ā I donāt know what it is now, but when I was a contestant there was a $500 a week stipend for cast members on the ranch.Ā When you received the check you could cash it and spend it, send it home, save it, whatever.Ā All airplane tickets, hotel accomdations, etc., for the contestants and potential cast members are taken care of by NBC, and during the casting process it self there was a $50 per diem to cover food costs.
Another question is timing; typically a season lasts for about 8-9 months.Ā About four of this is spent in filming; if you last all the way until the final three or four, you could be away from home for as much as four months or so.Ā Once the ranch filming wraps and the last few contestants are sent home, however, there is still another four or five months that all the contestants have to continue losing weight until the finale.Ā In addition, potential cast members are flown out to California a couple weeks before filming begins for the final round of casting, medical checkups, physchological evals, etc.Ā NBC brings out more people than what they need and the cast is not finalized until filming literally begins.Ā People have been cut at the last minute and replacements flown in with hardly any time to spare.Ā Nothing is in stone until itās on camera!
When will you hear from Biggest Loser about your video?Ā There is no way of knowing.Ā I heard back a few weeks after I sent it in, but even after that itās a big waiting game.Ā If you get a phone number or email from a casting direction, definitely drop them a line/call every couple weeks to find out if youāre still in the running or whatās going on.Ā Schedules and plans change almost every day, so itās easy to get lost in the shuffle.Ā If you donāt hear back within a month I would think your video didnāt make the cut.Ā That doesnāt mean you canāt send in another or visit a casting call – itās just up to you!
Finally, hereās my video application tips!Ā This is by no means a recipe for success; itās based on my video application and the conversations I had with casting directors out in LA in between things.Ā I was pretty curious about the whole process so I was pumping them for info even after filming began.Ā Iām such a nerd!
-
Theyāve usually decided if theyāre interested in you within the first 30-60 seconds of your video, so frontload it with your best stuff.Ā Make it interesting!Ā Start off with something funny or exciting!
-
Keep in mind, if youāre going to be cast, your video is going to be watched hundreds of times by producers, executives, casting directors, etc.Ā If it bores you or your friends the second or third time watching it ⦠put some more time into it!
-
Special effects?Ā Donāt bother!Ā Weāve all got video editting software with all sorts of bells and whistles on our homeĀ computers, butĀ fancy transitions are not going to sell you to people who do video editting for a living.Ā In fact, it can distract from who you are.Ā Iām a video editting nerd and I didnāt use any special effects other than putting my name and contact info on as a subtitle at the beginning.
-
Donāt bother talking about why you need to lose weight.Ā When IĀ first started filming my audition video I started descibing all of my health reasons for losingĀ weight – but when I was watching it back, I realized ⦠they donāt need to hear it!Ā One look at me was all they needed to know I needed to lose weight!Ā Show them why you need to lose it; I said I needed to lose weight for my kids, and then I followed it with a minute or two of the best footage I could find of me with wrestling with my three boys.Ā We probably filmed half an hour of that insanity and I grabbed the cutest, loudest, and funniest few moments for theĀ audition video.Ā Your physical need to lose weight is not nearly as interesting as who or what your losing the weight for.
-
Live loud!Ā Reality TV is over the top, dramatic, and filled with loud personalities.Ā They need to see that on your video!Ā I wanted them to know that even though Ā I was morbidly obese I was up to the challenge of the crazy competitions and workouts – so I threw on a bunch of clips from my different youth group activities; me getting slimed, snowtubing, playing paintball, screaming at events, being on stage, running around ⦠you get the idea.Ā Other contestants did things appropriate to their lives; Tim from OregonĀ had himself spinning out on his Harley, Tim from Deleware recruited his elementary school class to do things with him, Heather Hanson filmed herself running around in a sports bra all day doing her household chores and errands.Ā The less talking and more action you can have, the better (in my opinion)!
-
If you have footage or photos of yourself thin, include those at some point on the video.Ā If you can show them what your after will be, then do it!
Pete Thomas, season 2 $100,000 champion andĀ currently a big asset in the casting processĀ left a comment in one of my other posts that I thought was worth mentioning here (to read the full comment, click here).Ā Here are few timeless highlights from his comment:
While I could give you tons of additional tips I will give you the BIG ones. They are really the only 3 that matter for the Open Call and Call Back.
#1 Your Look – Come looking beautiful or handsome. Men (and women) come shaven and looking neat, clean and beautiful. If youāre a slob this is the wrong show for you. You may be fat but you should still have a level of self confidence and respect that shows through in how you carry yourself. No need to dress for a wedding but Erik from Season 3 bought new clothes. See my site for his interview.
# 2 Your Team – Think about this. Who has a stronger team āstoryā – Two Fat Camp Counselors or two third Cousins? Get it? How you ārelateā to your teammate makes a big difference since this is part of your story. If youāre an individual all hope is not lost as they may have some twist that gets you on the show (think Bernie and Brittany from Season 4).
#3 Your Job – Assassins need not apply. Interesting or regular jobs only please.
Extra A – Have A LOT to lose. Men with āonlyā 100 lbs to lose are borderline at best this year. Women with 70 lbs to lose are borderline. 700 pounders are also a no go. You have to be able to exercise. But I have a feeling one day that may be a twist or special feature they will add to inspire those who are that size.
Extra B – Type Aās get cast on the show. And the Aās of the Type Aās (See Bullets #5 from Mattās video blog above – Live Loud)
There are even more tips I could give that have to do with interpersonal stuff which is where I see people mess up but remember what Matt said – Live Loud (not obnoxious, but Loud ![]()
Pete
Talk to you soon and remember, Thereās a Winner Wi āthinā You!

question – thanks for the info. I'll be watching for it. i only hope they have one near me.
Good luck everyone.
I hope they're coming somewhat close to where I live. Indiana, Altoona or Johnstown PA would be a GREAT place to come to.
Hey Rae-Anne…I live in Indiana..maybe we can meet at Open Casting..(just incase they decide to do teams!) š
Feliz, are you seriously? OMG….we're soooo close.
Rae-Anne : I live in Northwest Indiana 30mins (on a good day) to Down Town Chicago…
Is anyone from Louisiana???? I hope they have a casting call near me, they proablly with have a casting call either in Nashville, or New Orleans, either way I am going!!!! Heck, why not it sounds like a PARTY!!!!!!!
Feliz….Oh, you're in Indiana state? I'm close to Indiana, PA.
Rea-Anne…LOL…my mistake. I guess I need to get thicker glasses…you did have PA in big letters…lol..sorry! It would have been nice though. Still, GOOD LUCK!
Ok so my husband tried out with me last year and even went to casting call. Now I want him to do it again and he is refusing. I dont know what to do in a video with just me and have so much cool stuff planned for us. Im glad we werent picked this season, we would have missed our sons bday. This is great timming for us
I am currently in the process of making my video and having some issues with getting footage into my editing program. I have hours of video and photos and to get it all into a 10-15 min video is hard for me because digital cameras use quicktime as their default "movie" setting. I am having trouble converting these quicktime videos over to my media movie player (Windows) for editing. I was using cool effects and transitions but after reading your article, I have taken them out. I don't have any dramatic videos of me over the years as I lost them in a home invasion. Thieves took my camera case with all my videos years ago. I never liked to have video taken of my fatness when we were out doing things. I guess I could go outside and make snow angels and shovel some snow, because that is all there is to do right now here in upstate NY. Does wrestling with your pets count?
I am a very creative person, very artistic and full of ideas and dreams. Making this audition tape has been very moving, I have incorporated things about me, that I didn't even know. I sat in front of camera and poured out my pain, but how much of that pain should I use? The loss of my father was most hardest thing I have had to contend with and it had to happen during a very hard and trying time in my life….should this be included? I want it to be perfect and full of fun and neat things. Playing peek a boo behind a pair of size 48 pants from the big and tall men's section from a department store, is my opening. Trash it?
I am 43 yrs old, 5'9" and weigh around 287, and I have been having dreams of being on the BL. This is my first time applying. But the video converting is what I am having issues with. It has to be on a DVD or Mini DV (no VHS?) right? And the deadline is in March…???? I have a whole month to shoot more stuff of me in my element then.
Well, I really appreciate all that you have written, and I am using everything to go forth and see if I can live my dream.
Good Luck to everyone.
Kat…where in upstate NY? I grew up near Rochester, though I no longer live there. I miss it. I just loved growing up and living there. I'd go back if I could!!!
hey kat. do you have quicktime player? if you do, you can easily convert your .mov files to .avi which is what windows based editing programs run on.
if you have quicktime player (you may need to upgrade to quicktime player pro. it's $30 and you can download it online. i know it's money, but it's not the worst $ spent). ok, so if you have quicktime player pro, open your .mov files into that program. then under file click "Export". Your export menu will give you several options, like what you want to name it, the destination to save it, and most importantly your export settings. i'm operating on a mac right now, and what my menu reads is "Export: Movie to Quicktime Movie" as it's default settings.
You want to change it to read "Export: Movie to AVI" which you will find under the drop down menu of your setting options.
I wish I could insert images to show you, but I can't do that here.
You can also google search "convert .mov to .avi". I found a link to software called RAD Video Tools. I think it might be a free download, so you can try that if you like. I just get iffy about unfamiliar software downloads online because of viruses and all that good stuff. But, I did some quick research for you and it kinda seems okay. Here's a link for the download.
can't give you any help on how to use it, so good luck! also, here's a link to the the company website.

hope this is somewhat helpful.
Hey guys! I just wanted to ask a quick question. Even if I didn't send in an audition tape, I can still go to an open casting call right? Just wanteed to be 100% sure!
Thanks for all the helpfull info. Good luck everyone!
Britt–
You can go to an open call without having done a tape. In fact, I'd say the majority of the people there are in that boat. If you do well at the open call, you'll move on to an interview. If you do well with the interview, they'll ask you for a few things, including a tape. Then you get to scramble and make one! š
Another option is to go to an open call with your application and tape in hand. I'd also bring a nice head shot. Then you can hand over everything. Though, if you make it to a full interview, they'll still likely have you tape some more footage.
I agree with question, I'd take your app to the open call if you go. They will be handing the apps out for you to fill out while waiting in line but it's easier to already have it filled out. You can take take a video too if you want. Here is how the open call will go:
You'll sit at a table with several others and talk to someone from casting (this will be quick), you may get a call back for a one on one interview (which will be the next day or two),
if you get a one on one they will video you there, if they still like you they will ask you to make a home video and mail it in (you will get a special code to mark on the envelope so they know someone from casting liked you).
With that said if you go to an open call and do not get called for a one on one they still recommend you send in a video, just in case.
So if you plan on going to an open call I'd wait on mailing anything in. Good luck!
I am applying for the show, though as a mother, I have a few questions about the process that I was hoping you could answer:
1. If you make it to the final round of interviews, the sequestering that keeps getting brought up, do you go directly to the show if chosen? Basically what I am wondering, is do you plan to be gone for the entire show-taping when you leave for sequestering, say goodbyes, tie up finances, etc…or do you get to go home before you go back to the ranch? How long is this final interview process?
2. I read in an interview with the Exec. rod.P that you can't have contact with "the world" during the initial immersion period, but then you can make calls off-camera, etc. What is your experience with this? How often, etc? Are you allowed to write letters home? Are you ever allowed to go off the ranch or even wander the grounds on your own, or are you always chaperoned, etc?
One last question, about the audition video. I want to have music for part of mine, though I know that someone mentioned this wasn't a great idea. Do you think its ok if I also include a non-musical version on the dvd following the musical one, with a menu feature to choose which one they watch?
I know someone that is auditioning for the show and I have noticed that she left a message on here a while ago. Her name is Cynthia and she is a great and awesome person. She just dont let anyone but a selected few of her family see that. I know she is in the process of making her audition tape and this is such a surreal thing. No one can believe she is doing it. Anyway, she has this crazy idea and kinda funny which I am hopeing you guys will give your honest opinions so I know what to say…okay so anywho, i dont know if how many of you know the movie The Pest…well the intro of that movie is pretty funny (the dancing shower scene) she wants to recreate that for her video….or she wants to do that parody of Sir Mix-A-Lots song from In Living Color….Baby Got Snacks…(horrible right)? I dont know what to think, she is a crazy girl (good way) and I know she can pull it off either way but what do some of you think…?
uh, okay. if you're her friend then you should be super supportive of her and what she's trying to do, which i'm assuming is why you're here. i think those sound like fun attention getters, but as her friend, i wouldn't post her ideas on a discussion board with other people who are also trying to do their videos and ultimately are in competition with her because people might jack her stuff. just a suggestion.
second, i left a message for cynthia on her ages ago, and she said that she didn't have any friends or support system. clearly you're concerned for her, so just help her get her tape done. if you think she's making a fatal mistake, offer her a better suggestion at least. and if this is cynthia, and perhaps you're too embarrassed to post as yourself, i say, "Do your thang girl!" get it! you can make your dreams come true and don't let the nay sayers get you down!! but again, don't post your video ideas in public forums. i'm sure no one will take them, but just be careful.
thank you xoxoxo i do support her in what ever she does thats what sisters are for. and it is true she dont have any friends. i didnt think about any of that when i first did the post. i am just seeking some kind of help for her. i havent had the problems like she has. i thought that if i took her out of her past situation she would get better but even being here in CA hasnt changed her. i try and include her in everything we do, and most of the time she goes. but only as long as its a very public place. for instance amusement parks or something. but when it gets intimate like parties or friends come over its completely different….
Michele-I live about 40 miles north of Albany, near Glens Falls in a small town called Argyle (like the socks…lol) It's nice here except for all the snow that we just dumped on…about another foot of it, want to help me shovel?
Question-I downloaded RAD Video Tools. I can now convert my mov files to avi. Thanks, I figured it out it's actually quite easy.
have a great night everyone…
Help :p – I would check out thepost above from a Casting Director. It states that they do not like gimmicks. If she was going to do this I would make it brief and make sure you are able to show a little of yourself. just a suggestion.
Gonzo – From what I have read from Matt and others once you are sequestered and if you are chosen you go straight to the ranch. No time at home before. You have to pack like you could be there for the duration. But Southern Girl made a great comment before about us getting a little ahead of ourselves by thinking about sequestering. Live in the now and take it one step at a time. They will give you all the details you need.
Does anyone know where the casting calls are yet? When does the application process close?
Wow I hope they plan to do one in the Atlanta area at the same place they have the past 2 times. Anyone here ever been to that one? I am planning to go if they do. If it's at the same place…it will be right down the street from my mom's house! (keeping fingers crossed)
OK, my question is….if I have already sent in my video and application, should I take another copy with me to the casting call? Also when I sent in my application and video, I didn't know what kind of picture to send in, so I just sent in this goofy picture of me my husband took a day we were filming. Should I have a headshot instead? Is that something you would do professionally or can I just take a really nice picture on my own?
I also read here that it's better not to have too much music in the video? Music was an integral part of my video, but anytime I was talking I pretty much turned the volume as low as it would go. Do you think I should remake it? I really love how it came out but I can take the music out easily and just have the original sound.
Sorry about all the questions…lol
Firegirl –
Oh, I know…I just hoped to get some info to help decide if its feasible for me to see it through…no sense in applying if I had to drop out somewhere during the casting process due to not being able to work out the arrangements. You are completely right, living in the now…just trying to get the full picture..:)
WOW!!!!what a site…I am totally loving this site. I would like you all to know that you have helped me tremendously. Right now as I am typing, my head hurts, its 11:21 at night, my feet are really swollen…and I need to get to bed. Our weather is such that for the third straight day in a row, there is no school, so I get to play all day with my 9 year old again:)
I will talk again real soon.
God bless,
Steph
Stephanie,
I'm glad you love the site! It gets addicting…fyi!
You're comment made my night! Good luck with the snow!
I know this question has been asked multiple times, but is it OK, since I'm applying alone, that my video would be 5 minutes or between 5-10, since I don't think mine will be 10? Thanks!
Brandi – I live in the metro-Atl area. I attended the casting call at Wild Bills last February. There were people who brought Videos, but the casting director I was grouped with just asked that they mail them in. They will take photos along with your applications. Maybe you could do a head shot, and a full body shot on the same page? Just an idea.
Just remember, you only have 2 minutes TOPS with the Casting Director….hopefully you don't have a time hog in your group. Be really honest, but not boring, and when they ask why you should be chosen, or why you need to lose weight don't have the same answer as everyone else.
I think the doors opened last year at 10, and we got in line at 7:30 a.m., and we were out of there by 11:00, and there was no one in line outside of the building. (Just trying to help with timing)
Good Luck! – I'll be there if it's at Wild Bills again this year too! Maybe I'll see you there!
Thanks Lucky! I was worried I was going to have to stand in line forever lol. Its good to know someone who has already done it! I appreciate the info!
Those of you on Reality Wanted… where do you see the casting directors names? I am a member, but have looked at the post and do not see them anywhere!
Bud – Holland posted the casting call on reality wanted. I have not seen anything posted persay on the website as to the CD's, but for your info check out the following link. http://www.hollywood.com/tv/The_Biggest_Loser/510…
SJ – It does not matter if you are alone or with a partner. It is imperative to follow the directions given. I would get as close to ten as possible. The way I look at it is if you cannot fill 10 min. of stuff about yourself then maybe you are not interesting, obviously not singling you out, this would be for anybody. Also maybe it is a way to see how well you follow direction. This is just my opinion!;-)
I think I would shoot for between 5 and 10. It was 5 when they were doing singles, but was bumped to 10 when they started looking for doubles, which makes sense- two people, double the footage.
I understand what Firegirl is saying, and maybe i'm totally off base, but if you think you have a really solid video that is around 6 minutes, i wouldnt add 4 minutes of unnecessary filler. If you're bored watching it, they will be too, and this is about selling yourself. I think you'd be doing yourself a disservice by sending in a 10 minutes snooze-fest rather than sending a 6 minutes attention grabber…
You want to find that perfect amount of footage where they can totally get a feel for your personality, but they're still left wanting more.
firegirl, what link is that? cuz that's not reality wanted.
Bud, if you're a member of reality wanted, you can see the casting director's name. There is also a place you can apply for the show.
Here's my question. The head shot I have on reality wanted was taken a couple years ago, because my hair is totally different that what it is now. Should I upload a new pic on there?
Just the idea of all the people applying is overwhelming! I think I am going to stick to what someone else said, Send it and forget it!!!! LOL That is the best advice ever….I know this has nothing to do with casting, but BL was so sad Tue. night….I hated that Dan had to go home…but he lost 100 pounds!!!!! What an inspiration!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am not a member of "reality wanted" should I be? Is there any advantage. I just want to be on the biggest loser like everyone else. Should I join?
Thanks
Rae – Anne: Did you follow the link? It gives all past casting directors of seasons. Some are repeats of 7. No it is not reality wanted. I do not believe it has a detailed listing like the link I posted. I have been able to get in contact with several CD's using this link.
Budakay – Being a member on reality wanted is free. Why not? It cannot hurt. The one of the CD's that is casting 8 posted it there.
firegirl….after i asked the question, yeah I did go to that site. So, if you contact a CD, they might contact you back?
It's possible, however you have to make sure you have the right CD's for this season. That is where it gets tricky and you kinda have to do your research.
Attention all hopefuls for this season!!!!!I will post something I found on Craigslist, NYC today…..I hope it helps all who utilize it….hopefully its not old info.

Its on the Miami Craigslist also. Same post as above. Quick question, if you met the casting director and emailed him several times last season is it stupid to contact him again? Meaning I met Tad at a casting call last year and then we emailed for a few, do you think he might remember me and overlook me this year? Only asking cause he is the one who posted the info on craigslist. Its crazy if you ask me cause last year it was a generic email address this year he posted his email address. How do you think he is able to go through all of the emails he is going to get?
Okay I am confused. So is the same CD working NYC and Miami? So if you're not in either states should you just not contact him with a picture and what not? I just looked on NBC.com and there aren't dates for the open calls yet. š
I would not contact a cd that you just randomly find their contact info, if however you have an email that has been given to you or is on a site asking for applicants by all means send a message letting them know you are interested.
Southern Girl…what about contacting a CD who's info you got from a former contestant on TBL?
I know I posted about this before, but I'm STILL having a hard time coming up with an idea for a video. I keep running things through my head, but I have no idea what I'm doing. It's going to be hard when I'm the one taping myself. I REALLY want to do this even though there's a HUGE chance I won't make it.
Hi everyone: I was checking alot of different craigslist cities: Here is what I found:
Houston, NYC, Dallas, Chicago, Miami, Phoenix. All of them say dates to be announced.
Good luck to all…..Southern girl, will there usually be more places for Open Calls?
Thanks,
Stephanie
Go to craigslist and find your city or the nearest big city and then go to tv. when in there see if there is a post for the biggest loser. Yes Tad posted the listing for both New York and Miami. They probably split them up and he just happens to do those.
I didnt see where it says dates to be announced though. Obviously that is the case but I just didnt see it
Rae-Anne:
Hi you know what? This is going to be my first time submitting my information. I have been going to bed with all of the information still on my mind, and am not sleeping well.
This is my suggestion: I am going to just try and have fun with the video. Also, is there someone perhaps at church who could video you? Someone like that? You don't have to divulge why you need it, that way things can be hush hush.
Stephanie
Everyone on here….you all are offering awesome tips….it is totally up to us to check it out and utilize what tools we have. Everyone that has had experience in this process, please know you are appreciated for sharing your experience, strength, and hope.
Stephanie
