Biggest Loser casting tips (season eight)

bl-logo-bar

OKAY PEOPLE, I’VE LOCKED THIS THREAD DOWN … BECAUSE IT GOT JUST TOO DARN BIG! I’VE POSTED A NEW CASTING TIPS BLOG ENTRY AND YOU CAN CONTINUE THE CONVERSATION THERE … HERE’S THE LINK: Biggest Loser Casting Tips (season 8, page 2).

Well, it’s official!  Casting has begun for season eight of Biggest Loser!  Feel free to discuss, post questions, compare notes, etc.!  NBC has posted casting information and the application here.

To find my original casting tips post which contains the video application advice you’ll see below as well as over a thousand comments worth of discussion, click here.  Stacy, Adam, Phil, Amy and Coleen were all reading and posting in the discussion there – it’s fun to look back and realize they were some of the superstars of season six!  To find my second post (fairly identical to this one), with well over two thousand comments worth of discussion, click here.  I was cast on season three because of my video – I’ve never actually been to a casting call.  And if you’re dealing with disappointment about not being cast, then check out my post on Biggest Loser casting disappointment.

One of the questions I hear a lot is about money … how do contestants afford to be away from home and work for months at a time?  I don’t know what it is now, but when I was a contestant there was a $500 a week stipend for cast members on the ranch.  When you received the check you could cash it and spend it, send it home, save it, whatever.  All airplane tickets, hotel accomdations, etc., for the contestants and potential cast members are taken care of by NBC, and during the casting process it self there was a $50 per diem to cover food costs.

Another question is timing; typically a season lasts for about 8-9 months.  About four of this is spent in filming; if you last all the way until the final three or four, you could be away from home for as much as four months or so.  Once the ranch filming wraps and the last few contestants are sent home, however, there is still another four or five months that all the contestants have to continue losing weight until the finale.  In addition, potential cast members are flown out to California a couple weeks before filming begins for the final round of casting, medical checkups, physchological evals, etc.  NBC brings out more people than what they need and the cast is not finalized until filming literally begins.  People have been cut at the last minute and replacements flown in with hardly any time to spare.  Nothing is in stone until it’s on camera!

When will you hear from Biggest Loser about your video?  There is no way of knowing.  I heard back a few weeks after I sent it in, but even after that it’s a big waiting game.  If you get a phone number or email from a casting direction, definitely drop them a line/call every couple weeks to find out if you’re still in the running or what’s going on.  Schedules and plans change almost every day, so it’s easy to get lost in the shuffle.  If you don’t hear back within a month I would think your video didn’t make the cut.  That doesn’t mean you can’t send in another or visit a casting call – it’s just up to you!

Finally, here’s my video application tips!  This is by no means a recipe for success; it’s based on my video application and the conversations I had with casting directors out in LA in between things.  I was pretty curious about the whole process so I was pumping them for info even after filming began.  I’m such a nerd!

  • They’ve usually decided if they’re interested in you within the first 30-60 seconds of your video, so frontload it with your best stuff.  Make it interesting!  Start off with something funny or exciting!
  • Keep in mind, if you’re going to be cast, your video is going to be watched hundreds of times by producers, executives, casting directors, etc.  If it bores you or your friends the second or third time watching it … put some more time into it!
  • Special effects?  Don’t bother!  We’ve all got video editting software with all sorts of bells and whistles on our home computers, but fancy transitions are not going to sell you to people who do video editting for a living.  In fact, it can distract from who you are.  I’m a video editting nerd and I didn’t use any special effects other than putting my name and contact info on as a subtitle at the beginning.
  • Don’t bother talking about why you need to lose weight.  When I first started filming my audition video I started descibing all of my health reasons for losing weight – but when I was watching it back, I realized … they don’t need to hear it!  One look at me was all they needed to know I needed to lose weight!  Show them why you need to lose it; I said I needed to lose weight for my kids, and then I followed it with a minute or two of the best footage I could find of me with wrestling with my three boys.  We probably filmed half an hour of that insanity and I grabbed the cutest, loudest, and funniest few moments for the audition video.  Your physical need to lose weight is not nearly as interesting as who or what your losing the weight for.
  • Live loud!  Reality TV is over the top, dramatic, and filled with loud personalities.  They need to see that on your video!  I wanted them to know that even though  I was morbidly obese I was up to the challenge of the crazy competitions and workouts – so I threw on a bunch of clips from my different youth group activities; me getting slimed, snowtubing, playing paintball, screaming at events, being on stage, running around … you get the idea.  Other contestants did things appropriate to their lives; Tim from Oregon had himself spinning out on his Harley, Tim from Deleware recruited his elementary school class to do things with him, Heather Hanson filmed herself running around in a sports bra all day doing her household chores and errands.  The less talking and more action you can have, the better (in my opinion)!
  • If you have footage or photos of yourself thin, include those at some point on the video.  If you can show them what your after will be, then do it!

Pete Thomas, season 2 $100,000 champion and currently a big asset in the casting process left a comment in one of my other posts that I thought was worth mentioning here (to read the full comment, click here).  Here are few timeless highlights from his comment:

While I could give you tons of additional tips I will give you the BIG ones. They are really the only 3 that matter for the Open Call and Call Back.

#1 Your Look – Come looking beautiful or handsome. Men (and women) come shaven and looking neat, clean and beautiful. If you’re a slob this is the wrong show for you. You may be fat but you should still have a level of self confidence and respect that shows through in how you carry yourself. No need to dress for a wedding but Erik from Season 3 bought new clothes. See my site for his interview.

# 2 Your Team – Think about this. Who has a stronger team ’story’ – Two Fat Camp Counselors or two third Cousins? Get it? How you ‘relate’ to your teammate makes a big difference since this is part of your story. If you’re an individual all hope is not lost as they may have some twist that gets you on the show (think Bernie and Brittany from Season 4).

#3 Your Job – Assassins need not apply. Interesting or regular jobs only please.

Extra A – Have A LOT to lose. Men with ‘only’ 100 lbs to lose are borderline at best this year. Women with 70 lbs to lose are borderline. 700 pounders are also a no go. You have to be able to exercise. But I have a feeling one day that may be a twist or special feature they will add to inspire those who are that size.

Extra B – Type A’s get cast on the show. And the A’s of the Type A’s (See Bullets #5 from Matt’s video blog above – Live Loud)

There are even more tips I could give that have to do with interpersonal stuff which is where I see people mess up but remember what Matt said – Live Loud (not obnoxious, but Loud -)

Pete

Talk to you soon and remember, There’s a Winner Wi ‘thin’ You!

  1. Tad posted that email as well last year. That's where I emailed him. I wonder if he's giving VIP passes to all who ask for it. Wouldn't that diminish the term VIP? Oh well. I emailed him the asked for info.

  2. wow, there's a ton of action going on here.

Kat–glad the software worked out for you.

As far as CD's go, yes, they assign different CD's to different regions. Looks like Tad has some east coast action and maybe a bit of the south.

Southern Girl–do you think if they contact Tad he might pass on their information to the appropriate CD? Or you think, for sure, they shouldn't hit him up?

Whoever asked about contacting a CD that you got from a former BL contestant, I say email them and let them know that "So and so" gave you their contact information.

I can't believe they still haven't posted their open call information!! Bah!! It'll be any day now, and I keep telling myself to be patient.

Rae-Anne, don't overthink your video. Just have fun. Even if you can't come up with something clever, just be bubbly, happy, and outgoing. Take them through your typical day, that's what the casting call suggests if you don't have any better ideas. Who knows what might happen in the midst of that!

  3. Stephanie W…

I cannot express how cool you are for sharing that info with us. Thank-you so much and I hope that you get on TBL just because you are obviously a really wonderful person. You go girl!!! Thanks again! : )

  4. I was in contact with two different casting directors today and both of which said that they are still trying to finalize dates and locations for the open calls.

Just reiterating what you guys have been saying. 🙂

I am also curious about how these VIP passes work. I do wonder if they give them to everyone who emails and asks for one.

  5. question…lol about my typical day…that's where I'm having the problem. Cuz since I'm now on unemployment, my typical day is sleeping, eating, watching tv, playing around on my computer and watching my niece for my sister.

I'm the one who got a CD info from a former contestant. The thing is this former contestant is on the west coast and i'm on the east coast. Does that matter?

  6. I wouldn't think it matters but do you personally know the former contestant?

  7. Stephanie W. Thanks for that update about the cities…Everyone here has been great and very informative! I am extremely anxious about open casting! I just can't wait anymore!

Any one in the chicago land area?

  8. Someone posted there would be casting calls in Ohio. I cannot find any info to support this. Anyone know about Ohio? This is so exciting!!!!!!!!!!!!

  9. Does anyone else check all the sites like I do…???lol…I'm in the process of tweeking my video…I've changed it like 100 times… Did they post the Casting locations and times yet?!?!?!

  10. Hey everyone……Does anyone know if any former contestants have been on the show w/ a torn acl or knee injuries?

  11. Have you heard if anyone has been contacted yet regarding submitted videos????

  12. Mare – there have been contestants with serious orthopedic issues over the years. The trainers and doctors worked around the injuries to lose the weight. : )

Open casting calls will probably be announced in the next week or two according to Pete Thomas, so be patient … they're coming!

Regarding the length of a video … it doesn't have to be ten minutes. If you do six minutes and it's good, leave it at that. You would only hurt yourself by adding four minutes to it and making it drag – and in the past the time limit has been as low as five minutes, so they're not fazed by a shorter video.

The CD's don't live around the country; they're all out in California. What happens is there are a couple teams of CDs that travel around the country for the open casting calls. They usually end up being in a city for several days; the first day is for the open casting call, then a couple days for follow up, on camera interviews with people they're interested in that they met at the casting call. So consequently, one CD might be putting the word out in a few different cities because that's where he or she will be going.

  13. OK, let me rephrase my statement @ contact cd's , that was just my opinion, not anything anyone has personally told me. I have no idea how they communicate with eachother. I would imagine if you have contact info on one and it's not the one you should be in contact with I would think they may direct you to the proper person.

I'm not sure how much I trust craigslist, I'd wait until the info is posted on NBC's site. Again that is just my opinion. I'm sure some stuff on craigslist is legit but I'd just be patient.
I personally think the best way to get in with is cd is to go to an open call.

  14. Thanks Matt for the info.. 🙂

  15. Thank you EVERYONE for the info…and good morning. Matt, thanks again for the site here….and I know your church is blessed to have you there for all reasons, spiritual, emotional, and physical.
I have a great idea….lets all try and promise to make this a fun adventure. If we don't get it, that is ok, because there are so many tools like on the biggest loser site, mytrainer bob site, jillian's site, etc.

Hey everyone have a great day!!!!

    Stephanie

  16. Southern girl,
Tad is one of the CDs (he was at the open call last year) and he posted the info on craigslist. Biggest Loser uses craigslist every year to post that they are taking application and then, later, to post the open call information. Craigslist is reputable in that sense. For other things, you use your good sense when on craigslist. But I've bought my cell phone, laptop, game systems, and other stuff from people who use it.

  17. FelizMonkey,
I'm in the Chicago area. I'm actually from Bloomington-Normal, but I go to school up near Chicago.

My sister and I are applying together. I want this more than I've wanted anything before. My friends keep telling me that I don't need it, but I think I do.

Questions — If you go to open calls and sent the application and video in the mail, do you have to take another application to the open casting?
Also, it's been mentioned that if you get a callback at open casting, the callback is a couple days later. Do you have to stay in the area? I go to school and my sister works so we can probably only go for a day.

  18. I live in Northwest Indiana…Maybe we could meet in the line! 🙂

I know about the wanting this more than anything..I see the shows and I just cry b/c I want that to be me!! I am taking with me an application, video (just in case) and some pictures (again just in case). I've sent all that in already, but you never know (that's my thought on that)

About how long you wait, according to the bits and pieces I have read, it'll probably be the very next day..but I am not sure – Matt and some of the nice people on here who has been through all the casting process would be able to give us a little more insite to that… 😉

  19. I cry during every single episode.

I'm just worried because I have a serious problem with emetophobia (fear of vomit), and if I were lucky enough to get on the show, that would be a huge problem. But, I guess that's something I'll have to deal with when/if the time comes.

  20. Cbus2,

No joke….I do too. I have the same fear….have had it ever since I was a little girl and it practically has run my life.
I have worried about that before too with this show b/c they love to make people puke.

  21. I think everyone some how, some way have fears. Mine is deep water…but when you have the support (like with teammates, family, etc…) I believe we can over come them! No matter where you are…

  22. I know it's possible to overcome fears, but I've been trying to deal with this my whole life, and it hasn't gotten any better. I get panic attacks if someone pukes, and I can't even be in the same room. I almost passed out last time I was in a room when someone got sick. It's horrible.

  23. wow…cbus2.. It just takes time!

  24. I took a look at Craigslist for Chicago and they had the casting call there.. It wsaid that they will be in Chicago but dates and times are TBA.. they did enclose an email for those who wanted to apply. casting.kristin@

  25. So here we go again lol. Round three! My best friend and I are about to work on our tape this weekend but my question for you Matt is since last year for season six they did open calls in jan and we were told that taping would start in april. Since they are starting calls in feb will that mean they will not begin taping until may. I will finish school in may and could not possibly drop all of my hard work to possibly not get selected for the show.

  26. When do yall think they will be making call backs? I sent in my should I dare say VHS TAPE! about a week ago. What is the chances they will even look at it since they changed the rules? One more thing do yall think that 6'6" 375lbs is big enough to be on the show? Or am I too tall for my weight!

  27. Budakay – I was told by a CD about a week ago that there will be open calls in OHIO but it would be one of the last three calls. No dates yet. That's all I know.

EVERYONE – Check NBC.com for info on casting dates. No one will probably know until they are posted.

  28. Someone was asking about the call backs from the open calls.

Ex: Last year the open call was on Saturday and our call back interview took place on Monday. I know they were still there interviewing people on Tuesday and Wednesday as well.

I hope that answers your question.

  29. You don't have to stay in the area but you have to be available to come back at the time they are there doing their call back interviews.

Also when you go to an open casting call, they give you a condensed one-page application to fill out while you're waiting in line. You may want to take yours to remember what all you wrote (???) but you wouldn't actually need it unless you get a call back interview a few days later. They ask for you to bring the full application then.

  30. They had a bad turn out in Miami last year (compared to other sites), like 200 people. So I think they're just trying to get people hyped by posting the new season so early. I don't recall them doing that a whole two months before having an open call. Take season 7 for example. It was announced in the beginning of June and the first call was b the end of June. But then again, I do know that at least of the CDs was doing another casting until a couple of weeks ago so maybe NBC were waiting until they got free.

  31. Thanks firegirl. I really hope they do have a casting call in Ohio, if they don't I will travel to one of the other cities, but it will be costly. I want this more than anything! I know we all do!

  32. Budakay – I just got a second confirmation from another CD that they are coming to Columbus.

  33. I have a question how many of the vip passes do they normally hand out? Do they have a set number or just give them to as many people as they want? Also how do they choose who gets a vip pass?

  34. Columbus, that sounds great. I wonder why it was listed on Craigslist? Thanks for the info.
Should we all request a VIP pass????

  35. NOT listed on craigslist, sorry.

  36. Hey ya'll! I hope you're all doing great!

I too am waiting anxiously for the open call dates/locations! I wish they'd post them already! I have a lot of things to coordinate with work and finding coverage since I work weekends. I think I have it taken care of, I just need dates/locations!!!

My partner and I haven't even started our video yet. We're going to wait until the info about open calls is posted on NBC.com to do it.

I hope you all aren't going too crazy over this. Have fun and keep hope, just don't make it an all or nothing thing. Go in with the hope that you'll make it, but don't put the rest (and biggest part) of your life on hold. That's what I did last summer and that was a HUGE mistake!

Sarah-don't give up graduation for this. Likely filming would start at the middle/end of May-so if your graduation is like most college graduations-at the beginning of the month, you should be fine.

    Best to you all!

I hope you all have a great day! Remember, its all up to you!
    ~Christi

  37. Budakay & JJsmommny – From my understanding they only give VIP's to people they are some what interested in seeing for sure. So if they viewed your video or have been corresponding with CD's for a while, that sort of thing.

Everyone – A former contestant involved with casting had told me that the percentage of people that do NOT get call backs is in the 90% (percentile). So if you have gotten a call back in the past consider yourself lucky!

  38. Thanks firegirl, with everyone talking about VIP passes, I wanted one too! So do you think if you previously applied you have a better chance? This is my first time due to work committments, but I am able to committ to this 100%.
I want it so bad, I see why folks could go through depression if no response from BL.
    Thanks,

  39. EVERYONE – If you are on Facebook feel free to comment on my TBL blog. Let's talk! http://apps.new.facebook.com/liveblog/entry/40390

  40. So if we decide to reple to the craigslist ad should we send a full body pic to the CD? just wondering

  41. rich – send a head shot and a full body shot. nothing professional.

  42. thanks Appreciate the advice this web site is great

  43. Ok…
I have to stay away from this board until I have seen the episode because I don't get home in time to catch the show on Tuesdays. So I have to DVR it. Just a few comments on the show: Jillian's team, although it was strategy, was very wrong for giving their word and then going against it. I am one of those guys that think that your word is the most valuable asset you have. To go against it tarnishes it. Maybe it's the southern in me and my brother says I may very well have made the same decision. I say bunk to that because I would have never put myself in that position. On the other hand. I have to say that I am glad Joelle remained for two reasons 1) Joelle needs empowering not only for her health but mentally. 2) Carla really needs someone like Bob to spend more time to help her be successful. I'm not saying that the others don't deserve the same, but Carla needs more time with Bob. Ultimately, I think the decision of Jillian's team will come back to bite them.
I'm answering things as I read them so I apologize about any thing that is repeated. What I find different about this casting as compared to others is this one isn't screaming couples like the last two auditions were. They were asking for specific things couples wise. Now it either or. Now tomorrow, they could change it up and it be all singles or all couples. It's all about how Hollywood and NBC works. I would think they would want to change things up since there has been 3 seasons of couples. Personally, I think there is more of an emotional tug when the contestants have to lean and rely on themselves and strangers.

There have been a few questions about tears and such on your vid. Here's the deal….I had a director that told me that everyone in Cali more specifically L.A., Hollywood, and such are or have been or want to be an actor. I can tell if someone if faking it within seconds. Some of the casting director may act on the side. What I am saying is if your tears are genuine and from a genuine place, it will ring true. If it is not, they will see right through you and you will be busted.

They are getting ready to shut our puters down for virus maintenance so I will be back with more.

  44. So some people may be mad that I post this but oh well they will get over it! 🙂 This is Holland Striplins Facebook Group. She is one of the main CD's for season 8. She is also the same person that has posted the call on Reality Wanted. If she is not the one coming to your town she may put the appropriate CD's in touch with you. Hope this is helpful! And as always, Good Luck! Can't wait till we can meet at the Campus!;-) http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=6183994826&…

  45. Thanks Firegirl!! Everyone on this site is SO helpful….totally appreciated, I can't wait to be helpful back!! : )

  46. Ok…I'm back. Keep in mind everyone. I am playing catch up so if I am being redundant please forgive me.

AlyFat333: I didnt have the issues it WMM that you are having. I saved the vid to my puter. THEN..I used another program called convertX to DVD to burn the program. To assure myself that it was on the dvd, I played it on my living room dvd player and my portable dvd player. I was always taught to play the vid on two mediums preferrably two separate brands of mediums.

Cynthia: I don't know where you are on the audition decision. You have been given some very good advice regarding your dark corner and auditioning for the show. I would like to chime in and say that although performing is my passion, your issue falls in line with the job that pays my bills. Here's the thing….the entertainment biz is unrelenting, unapologetic, merciless, friendly when it has to be and downright cruel because it can be. I think this is where xoxoxo is coming from. People tend to get very attached to the casting process and when the smoke doesn't blow their way, they are down. My concern with you much a repeating of xoxoxo in that if you are in this dark place, and things don't go your way, it could push you further in or if you get on the show the separation from you daughter as well as the intensity of the trainers and work out could be taxing. Like I said, you may have made the decision to audition. If so, congratulations. If not, my suggestion to you would be to sit this one out. Look to your church or even invite some of the guys here to chat with you via yahoo, aol, or msn. Build the confidence for your daughter and yourself. Then when they cast this summer, you may be in a better emotional place to do the show and reveal to the CD's the wonderful person you are. How do I know you are wonderful? Answering that is easy…god doesn't make any messes. Just an opinion.

Curious: Regarding the tattoos…keep in mind…during season 5 of the show, Bob's team got tattoos on their excursion to Vegas!

RaeAnne: Your comment about some people whom apply for the show whom aren't big enough. I have to say AMEN! to that. I got a call back this past summer. While waiting in line, there was a team of beautiful blondes that weren't big enough to be on the show. At the most, each could have stood to lose maybe 40lbs. I thought to myself "they don't have a shot". Cut to me at the hotel and those girls sitting across from me in the lobby. I was like how?

MAILING YOUR ENTRIES: Someone said that priority mail was no better than regular mail. I beg to differ. We have a mail depot minutes from my home and I asked the mgr if this was true. He said not at all. There are things called last on first off which means that priority packages are sent from one place to another quicker than regular mail. He also said that sometimes if a truck is full of priorities, they have dropped a few in the overnight bin to make weight or quota or something like that.

REALITYWANTED: One of the guys that run that site is a friend of mine on Myspace. I know for a fact that he knows and talks to casting directors in both L.A. and N.Y. I will admit that they seem more interested in CBS shows than the other channels. Never the less, I want to think that Evil Dick on Big Bro was cast via that site.

Budakay: Casting directors and talent agents look for and cast people from all places. Keep in mind that R&B vocalist Toni Braxton was discovered pumping gas. Bob discovered Heba and Ed. At my casting call, one of the guys at our table was discovered because he fell down in the restaurant where the CD was eating the night before.

GIMMICKS: I think there is a difference between doing a little something to get attention and make the CD's chuckle and dressing up like a chicken or doing something that has no connection to the show. This is the thing about Idol. People come in with the weird outfits thinking that it will shock the judges and such and are unrelenting with it. Those whom have good voices are eventually told that they didnt need the costume or the gimmick to get noticed. Heather did a vid in her bra and underwear and she got on. That could be seen as gimmicky but it really wasn't. It was her day in a bra.

Gonzo: I wondered about the same thing regarding heading to the ranch as soon as you are chosen. Rmember, in season 6, Bob and Jillian visited their teams and picked them up. So maybe they will switch it up.

MUSIC IN THE VIDS: Once again…I'm only sharing what I have learned in my performance history. The problem with music in a vid are vast. 1) You run into copywrights. If they can't lift the music off you vid, they may not be able to use the footage because they aren't going to pay for the copywrights. 2) Different machines will change the volume automatically. We had a vid during part of our show where in a rap track was played at a moderate volume behind the spoken words. We took it to competition and when the vid played on their uber teched out machine, it was all f-bombs and other things I care not to mention here. No words at all.
    3) For those of you using more intense editing programs, some programs require that you put the music on another track on the timeline. Some equipment will recognize the loudest track and cut the rest. So you will be talking about something uber important and the cornerstone of your tape and then your background of soft music takes over. That's just a few things. If you are going to use music, I suggest you don't place it over anything important.

VIP PASSES: You can get passes in many ways. Every time I auditioned, I had a pass given to me by a CD. I have been to other casting calls wherein passes were given out via radio competitions and at gyms. VIP passes are given to people they are interested in seeing more of. They don't give these out to everyone. I got a pass last summer. The guys at QT didn't and they emailed the same CD that I did.

Cbus2: The way it worked for me last year was I went to the casting call. That afternoon, I got a call from the CD and was told that he had emailed me all the info. My meeting with them was at 11am two days later. Also I would take the long form app with you because there are more questions on it than on the short form they give you at the casting call. The CD can get a better idea of who you are.

Ok..now that I have ran my mouth, I have a question. What do you all know about the CD's? Have any of you interviewed with Holland Striplin or the others? What were your impressions?

  47. As always McF, chockful of information. Thanks!

As for CDs, I interviewed with Tad.

  49. Hopefully that previous entry was not a human being who was too lazy to take 3 minutes to see that this board has EXPERTS giving tips on it and not generic info.

  50. No Pete, just trying to give all the help I can to everyone!!!!!
Most of the info I have researched is from Casting Directors. No need to be mean.
