Biggest Loser casting tips (season eight)

bl-logo-bar

OKAY PEOPLE, I’VE LOCKED THIS THREAD DOWN … BECAUSE IT GOT JUST TOO DARN BIG! I’VE POSTED A NEW CASTING TIPS BLOG ENTRY AND YOU CAN CONTINUE THE CONVERSATION THERE … HERE’S THE LINK: Biggest Loser Casting Tips (season 8, page 2).

Well, it’s official!  Casting has begun for season eight of Biggest Loser!  Feel free to discuss, post questions, compare notes, etc.!  NBC has posted casting information and the application here.

To find my original casting tips post which contains the video application advice you’ll see below as well as over a thousand comments worth of discussion, click here.  Stacy, Adam, Phil, Amy and Coleen were all reading and posting in the discussion there – it’s fun to look back and realize they were some of the superstars of season six!  To find my second post (fairly identical to this one), with well over two thousand comments worth of discussion, click here.  I was cast on season three because of my video – I’ve never actually been to a casting call.  And if you’re dealing with disappointment about not being cast, then check out my post on Biggest Loser casting disappointment.

One of the questions I hear a lot is about money … how do contestants afford to be away from home and work for months at a time?  I don’t know what it is now, but when I was a contestant there was a $500 a week stipend for cast members on the ranch.  When you received the check you could cash it and spend it, send it home, save it, whatever.  All airplane tickets, hotel accomdations, etc., for the contestants and potential cast members are taken care of by NBC, and during the casting process it self there was a $50 per diem to cover food costs.

Another question is timing; typically a season lasts for about 8-9 months.  About four of this is spent in filming; if you last all the way until the final three or four, you could be away from home for as much as four months or so.  Once the ranch filming wraps and the last few contestants are sent home, however, there is still another four or five months that all the contestants have to continue losing weight until the finale.  In addition, potential cast members are flown out to California a couple weeks before filming begins for the final round of casting, medical checkups, physchological evals, etc.  NBC brings out more people than what they need and the cast is not finalized until filming literally begins.  People have been cut at the last minute and replacements flown in with hardly any time to spare.  Nothing is in stone until it’s on camera!

When will you hear from Biggest Loser about your video?  There is no way of knowing.  I heard back a few weeks after I sent it in, but even after that it’s a big waiting game.  If you get a phone number or email from a casting direction, definitely drop them a line/call every couple weeks to find out if you’re still in the running or what’s going on.  Schedules and plans change almost every day, so it’s easy to get lost in the shuffle.  If you don’t hear back within a month I would think your video didn’t make the cut.  That doesn’t mean you can’t send in another or visit a casting call – it’s just up to you!

Finally, here’s my video application tips!  This is by no means a recipe for success; it’s based on my video application and the conversations I had with casting directors out in LA in between things.  I was pretty curious about the whole process so I was pumping them for info even after filming began.  I’m such a nerd!

  • They’ve usually decided if they’re interested in you within the first 30-60 seconds of your video, so frontload it with your best stuff.  Make it interesting!  Start off with something funny or exciting!
  • Keep in mind, if you’re going to be cast, your video is going to be watched hundreds of times by producers, executives, casting directors, etc.  If it bores you or your friends the second or third time watching it … put some more time into it!
  • Special effects?  Don’t bother!  We’ve all got video editting software with all sorts of bells and whistles on our home computers, but fancy transitions are not going to sell you to people who do video editting for a living.  In fact, it can distract from who you are.  I’m a video editting nerd and I didn’t use any special effects other than putting my name and contact info on as a subtitle at the beginning.
  • Don’t bother talking about why you need to lose weight.  When I first started filming my audition video I started descibing all of my health reasons for losing weight – but when I was watching it back, I realized … they don’t need to hear it!  One look at me was all they needed to know I needed to lose weight!  Show them why you need to lose it; I said I needed to lose weight for my kids, and then I followed it with a minute or two of the best footage I could find of me with wrestling with my three boys.  We probably filmed half an hour of that insanity and I grabbed the cutest, loudest, and funniest few moments for the audition video.  Your physical need to lose weight is not nearly as interesting as who or what your losing the weight for.
  • Live loud!  Reality TV is over the top, dramatic, and filled with loud personalities.  They need to see that on your video!  I wanted them to know that even though  I was morbidly obese I was up to the challenge of the crazy competitions and workouts – so I threw on a bunch of clips from my different youth group activities; me getting slimed, snowtubing, playing paintball, screaming at events, being on stage, running around … you get the idea.  Other contestants did things appropriate to their lives; Tim from Oregon had himself spinning out on his Harley, Tim from Deleware recruited his elementary school class to do things with him, Heather Hanson filmed herself running around in a sports bra all day doing her household chores and errands.  The less talking and more action you can have, the better (in my opinion)!
  • If you have footage or photos of yourself thin, include those at some point on the video.  If you can show them what your after will be, then do it!

Pete Thomas, season 2 $100,000 champion and currently a big asset in the casting process left a comment in one of my other posts that I thought was worth mentioning here (to read the full comment, click here).  Here are few timeless highlights from his comment:

While I could give you tons of additional tips I will give you the BIG ones. They are really the only 3 that matter for the Open Call and Call Back.

#1 Your Look – Come looking beautiful or handsome. Men (and women) come shaven and looking neat, clean and beautiful. If you’re a slob this is the wrong show for you. You may be fat but you should still have a level of self confidence and respect that shows through in how you carry yourself. No need to dress for a wedding but Erik from Season 3 bought new clothes. See my site for his interview.

# 2 Your Team – Think about this. Who has a stronger team ’story’ – Two Fat Camp Counselors or two third Cousins? Get it? How you ‘relate’ to your teammate makes a big difference since this is part of your story. If you’re an individual all hope is not lost as they may have some twist that gets you on the show (think Bernie and Brittany from Season 4).

#3 Your Job – Assassins need not apply. Interesting or regular jobs only please.

Extra A – Have A LOT to lose. Men with ‘only’ 100 lbs to lose are borderline at best this year. Women with 70 lbs to lose are borderline. 700 pounders are also a no go. You have to be able to exercise. But I have a feeling one day that may be a twist or special feature they will add to inspire those who are that size.

Extra B – Type A’s get cast on the show. And the A’s of the Type A’s (See Bullets #5 from Matt’s video blog above – Live Loud)

There are even more tips I could give that have to do with interpersonal stuff which is where I see people mess up but remember what Matt said – Live Loud (not obnoxious, but Loud -)

Pete

Talk to you soon and remember, There’s a Winner Wi ‘thin’ You!

  1. I have another question: I mailed in my application yesterday, yeah me!
Anyways, if there are any open calls in my area in the next couple weeks, and I haven't heard from casting, I will probably attend. Is it important to tell them that you've submitted via mail, is there a way for them to link your audition to the submission/video?
I can burn another copy of the video, but I didn't photocopy my application, mostly because if I had it and got a call from casting, I'd probably study the heck out of it and wanted to avoid seeming unnatural or rehearsed, so I figured I would not keep a copy…now wondering if I should have for an open call…what do you think?

  2. Gonzo – I thought the same way about copying my application and now I am kinda upset that I did not! I think I will make another copy and fill it out to the best of my ability before I forget what I put on it. If you just sent it, it is probably still fresh in your mind.
Sorry I can not help with the question about linking your mail in with you at a casting call.:-)

  3. Alyfat333 – Thank you for defending me. I really know how important this whole process is for everyone. At first I thought that I would keep all the info to myself and be selfish, LOL, but then I thought, hey we are all in the same shoes here and why not share what I find. In the end the CD's are who pick the final contestants but at least we can all be prepared as much as possible!

  4. Hey Guys! I sent in my tape about two weeks ago, and I was so nervous because it took them a week before they even picked it up from the P.O. Box! I applied with a partner and we made one combined video. Was that a bad idea? Should we both have done our own videos? Has anyone heard back from a CD for Season 8 yet? I wish you all luck and hopefully we can be partners on the Ranch!

  5. BigCollegeKid – I would not worry. If they like one over the other they will call. If that other person is more dynamic than you, then it may be a problem. You can send another one of just you if you are worried and if you are close to a casting call then why not go? And if anyone has heard from a CD they are probably not going to say on here. And yea we WILL be on the ranch together!! Stay Positive!!

  6. Thanks FIREGIRL! I love you! I figured no one would say if they heard from a CD. A tear came to my eye cause I have this feeling that it is our time! ME & YOU Firegirl! I was supposed to study abroad in China starting in March, and every night when I went to sleep I saw myself on the scale and not in China. SO i canceled my trip. If I get on amazing…if not I feel no regrets! WE HAVE TO CLAIM IT! We are the NEXT BIGGEST LOSERS!

  7. YAHOOOOOO!!!!!

  8. hey everyone. i have been buried under some projects so i am a little behind on posts but being off sugar has been such a good thing for me. i lost two more pounds this past week and no longer crave sugar…i have found that i don't eat as much of any food. my husband and i went out to eat yesterday and got the lunch special at this pasta place which is a trip to the salad bar, a small plate of pasta and a bread twist and all i could eat was the salad, i was too full even for a little of the bread which is my favorite. i never would have believed i could go off sugar. my husband and i are both feeling so much better. i just wanted to encourage anyone here that feels the "need" for sugar that they can give it up and it does make a big difference.

i am still hoping to make it to the ranch since i still have well over a hundred to lose but that is still months away.

BigCollegeKid – i have dreams i am on the scale too or i wake up thinking of what i take care of before i leave for the ranch, haha!!

  9. Well since Matt has shared that more than 4 people who were regular poster/lurkers during last season made it onto the show this season, it's pretty safe to bet a good number should come off this board this next season as well.

I, too, have had a couple of dreams about this over the last year. I always saw myself boarding that bus with other finalists. I can still see the boarding area clearly in my mind. In each dream I was never with the person with whom I auditioned.

This season I'm auditioning semi-alone (I have a just-in-case partner who has sent in the app; we did it separately). That I only saw myself does not mean I won't make it on with my partner because I did not reconnect with that person until after I had those dreams. This is seriously the last time I'm applying so I know that dream has to be now. Like you said, I am CLAIMING it. We will DEFINITELY meet on campus.

As for passing up a study abroad in China, wow, I don't know. I did one in Spain and I loved it. But then again, I might have been more adventurous while there had I not been concerned with my appearance. So I guess my thoughts on that are this: if you're returning to school when filming is over and the opportunity will still be there, then go ahead with TBL. But if it won't, then I wouldn't pass it up. A study abroad is hands down the best way to do another country.

It is said in the Secret (and other places) that your mind has to fully intend something. You can not hold back, even a little bit. For instance, when I applied for season 5, I knew I had a trip to London coming up with some students. Though I really wanted to do the Biggest Loser, I felt guilty about the kids who were all signed up for London (we were 2 months away). So my mind was not fully committed to wanting the show.

This time my head is so clear. Yes, I would miss the last month of school but we'd film through the summer and I can return (or not). No guilt.

  10. Oh! About the making copies of the application. I usually make a copy of every one of them, not because I want to memorize them but because the short application you are given at the open call is compiled of some of the questions on the longer app. So it makes filling the short app go quicker.

This time however, I forgot to make a copy before I sent my application off. That turned out to be a good thing because I had to do another one.

When filling out similar questions on my realtiywanted profile, I thought of things that more defined who I am as a person– especially one BIG thing that really is who I am. I didn't realize that until I had a discussion with my dad (after I sent the app) about something totally unreality to Biggest Loser. He made an observation about me after a fun heated discussion and, I promise you, the light bulb went DING!

So last night I filled out another app in anticipation of the open calls (made a copy of this one– one to turn in at the open call and one to mail in WHEN I get that special code to put on my package) and I really had fun doing it. I'm glad they'll get a 2nd app that paints a more detailed picture of me.

I advise you to do the same, even if you kept a copy of the one you sent.

  11. 3 things: Do they weight you at the open casting call? Do the have a Chiropractior and Massage Therapist at the Ranch? is the sequester 1 week or 2?

  12. AlyFat333 I agree with what you said about Pete's comment. What a jerk.

  13. TBone,

They don't weigh you at the open calls. You meet with a casting director with a group of 8 or 9 other people. All of you have a TOTAL of 5 minutes or so to make an impression on the CD.

Sequestering is BEFORE the cameras start rolling.

I can't answer about the doctors though I do know there are doctors of some kind on campus.

  14. Hey ya'll!

The cd I interviewed with was Darren I believe. Bald guy.

I'm a bit confused…Pete's message seemed to be for "Casting Call Tips", at least that is who posted right before his message on MY screen. Firegirl wasn't on there…unless Casting Call Tips = Firegirl? I didn't think Pete's message was mean, he was just saying that we get a lot of good info from other people who have been through the process on this board.

I dunno, mebbe someone addressed this already after Pete's post, I haven't read the rest.

Hope you all have a great day! Remember-it's all up to you!

~Christi (aka: Sweethajji on NBC boards)

  15. Last summer at the Charlotte open call they had people there GIVING massages, taking blood pressure and other stuff. They were there with the "Fitness Together" people who hosted the event, not with Biggest Loser. Those massages were NICE too. 🙂

Oh well I'm STILL waiting on the open call locations to be announced!!! Somewhat impatiently too!

If you guys will do this with me, I would greatly appreciate it…let's keep each other lifted up in prayer. Prayer changes things and I believe if we will all do that for each other, it will make the wait, anticipation, and rejection (for some) more manageable. We all know what an intensely emotional process this is so let's just say a general prayer for each other as often as we think about it. I'll do it for all of you, will you do it for me as well? I appreciate those of you who do. 🙂

Hope you all have a great day! Remember-it's all up to you!

~Christi (aka: Sweethajji on NBC boards)

  16. OMG! ok I thought casting was already over soooo this is real exciting! does anybody know when filming will start? because im not turning 18 till may sooo : ( but Im kind of stuck right now because this is so important to me and i dont want to have to wait like another 8 months to get on this show Im losing now and 250,000 will pay for my education and then some sooo anybody who has info about this please respond *peace*

  17. I have a very silly question. Is there coffee or diet pepsi at the ranch OR is this something we MUST give up!!!!
    Dumb question, sorry.

  18. Good Morning everyone. Hey Viola, no casting call dates or true list as of yet, so hang in there. In my opinion, don't wait to lose the weight…..I know I can get caught all up in that.

Hey if anyone would like to know, Jillian's newsletter has a special little blurp about Jillian being at the "Radical Womens Conference". It will be in Arlington Virginia on March 28, it is 149.00, and Jillian will be speaking from 1:30, to 3:00. Additional details on newsletter link.

Everyone make it a great day, and
    EXPECT SUCCESS!!!!!!!

  19. Libbee B – Yes I posted that. I just put casting call tips as the name so people would read it. No matter who it was posting the comment it was very negative and really uncalled for. NO ONE on here is an expert unless you are a casting director from the show. Yes, some have been on the show, was there during the casting process and have even been sequestered. To say you are an expert for these reasons is totally disrespectful to the CD's who do this job. I believe that is why a few were a little perturbed about Pete's post. I will continue to post interviews that I find from CD's in order to arm everyone for this process.

Budakay – I am so with you on that! NO COFFEE? UGH!!!I may have to die!!

  20. Here is a great link from Reality Wanted. It features interviews with several Reality show CD's. I found them to be helpful, hopefully you will to! http://www.realitywanted.com/news

  21. Well I never even thought to make a copy of my original application before I sent it in. I'm printing off another copy now so I can try to refill in the blanks. 🙂
I'm so anxious for casting calls to be posted. I actually found a friend of mine who said she would be my partner if I needed one. I don't know her really well because we met online and don't get to talk too much, but she said she would go to casting calls with me if they have them in the ATL area again. I'm a little hesitant to claim her as a partner right now before casting calls but if for some reason I absolutely needed a partner…i suppose i've got one…lol
    I hate waiting! AHHHH

  22. I have seen a few people mention on here that Bob discovered Ed and Heba. What do you mean? I saw on the show that Bob was the one that went out to get them and "surprise them" that they were chosen for the show.

But what do you mean "discovered" ??

  23. oh, i am dying to find out about the open casting calls since i will most likely have to fly out to one. any ideas when they will post them??

  24. Sunshine– Not to discourage you, but many people posted last go-around their extreme disappointment for taking off many days of work//paying a lot of money for airfare and boarding just IN CASE there were to get a call back interview at an open casting call that was not near their home.

If you have the money to spend in a time like this, then more power to you!! I just know that last time at the Dallas open call they only called back 22 teams out of the hundreds of people who were there.

I hope for you that if you are flying out there, you will get a call back. Good luck!! Where are you looking to fly to?? Have you been in contact with a CD for a VIP pass? 🙂 🙂

  25. Anxious – I am a stay at home mom so I wouldn't need to take any work off and I am from a big family and my siblings live all over from California to Virginia and a few places in between so I am hoping that there is an open casting call somewhere close to one of them and then I would go and stay with them. it would be a fun excuse to see them and get our kids together and stuff so i wouldn't feel like i wasted my money if i didn't get a call back but of course i would be disappointed. i just want to have the opportunity to meet a CD and sell myself you know?

i hope they post them soon!

  26. I am Back,
Are you saying you heard from a CD about your video?
    That is so exciting.

  27. Sunshine- keep in mind you have maybe 2 minutes to "sell "youself at the casting call- it goes very quickly. Make sure you have something memorable to say and speak up no matter what, because others will try to hog all the conversation!

  28. hi umm well im super nervous…im working on my video right now. whats sag/aftra? how can i get in touch with a cd? is it important to right now? anyone heard back? anyone from the los angeles area?

  29. ohh and i recently dyed half of my hair will that ruin my chances?

  30. Southern Girl – thanks for the advice. I have an idea of what i am going to say but I will think about it some more.

  31. Do they give a couple of weeks notice before the casting calls? Or do they give a couple of days

  32. Does anyone here have a profile on realitywanted.com? You guys are more than welcome to check mine out and vote for me if you'd like!

Justgo to the main pages and then to Browse Members and just type my name: Valerie F

Thanks, look forward to seeing your pages too! 😉

  33. Melissa, I wondered the same thing so I googled it.

    SAG – Screen Actors Guild
AFTRA – The American Federation of Television and Radio Artistis

    Good luck on your video.

  34. Melissa – SAG and AFTRA are the actors unions. From what I have read on here, nobody will say if they've been contacted, so chances are anyone that has isn't on here anymore, or they aren't saying. I am wondering the same thing about contacting a casting director. I mailed in my app/video on Sat, it was received yesterday. I am not sure if I should also contact a casting director, or just wait it out and see if they contact me first??? What do you all think?

  35. It sounds like "I am Back" got contacted. How long ago did you send in your video prior to being contacted? Just trying to get a timeframe?
    Thanks,

    good for you!!!!!!!!1

  36. i emailed one of the casting directors my pictures, name, age weight…etc. and he emailed me 1 minute later asking me questions and told me he would email me about the casting call later this week……hope this helps : )

  37. anxious did u mail it too? how can i get in touch with a cd?
    thnks:-)

    gonzo goodluck!
    thakns for answering my questions

  38. no i just emailed it last night and he responded his email is tadpatrick@gmail.com there was an ad for it on craigslist….

  39. I give up…I was so excited in the beginning…now well, as usually nothing goes my way!!!!!!

  40. Tressie: Don't give up so quickly. The "stress", the feeling of being anxious is not your, my problem…it's the waiting to know – is what's driving us crazy…just hang on..don't give up quite yet!!!

  41. Well I emailed Holland Striplin as she mentioned to do on her facebook page and she said she'll pass on my info to the CD who handles my state. I guess that must be Mr. Tad Patrick.

  42. Applied again,
why dont you just email him directly like I did and I got a response within a minute. tadpatrick @gmail.com

  43. I'm trying to email him. I keep getting an error. I had emailed her on Sunday and I just checked my inbox.

  44. really? cuz i got a response from him within a minute……hmmmmmm

  45. Yeah, it's the way things are working for me right now I guess.

  46. hey at least your eligible to compete im 17 and wont be until may15 and he told me filming starts may 4th sooo
but im going to audition anyways, there is always a chance that production is delayed for some reason right?

  47. Does anyone know if there will be a casting call in PA yet or what CD to contact?

  48. I see someone else took my name…so I had to alter it a bit.

That is great that someone mentioned that Holland said she would "pass their information along" to someone who was doing their state..and that someone turned out to be Tad.

I was in contact with Holland….so hopefully that means Tad isn't coming anywhere near Texas.

  49. is there a different cd for california or can i email tad patrick? my fiance took the camera so im waiting so i can take a pick and email thanks guys

  50. hey guys um iwas reading petes post from season 2 and well he said they look for people with interesting or reagular jobs…well im curently a stay at home mom because i got fires from my job beacause i wasnt able to go in on my dayoff because i had no one to watch my kids and ithey wanted me to go to a city 30 minutes away for four hours and traffic was killer. well anyways my question is will it affect my chances because im currently bot working?
