Biggest Loser Casting Tips (season 8, page 2)

COMMENTING IS CLOSED! THIS POST GOT TOO BIG! YOU CAN CONTINUE THE CONVERSATION ON THE BIGGEST LOSER CASTING TIPS (SEASON 8, PAGE 3) BLOG POST!

Okay, casting is well on it’s way for season eight of Biggest Loser.  I’m reposting this entry to enable people to continue the conversation started here.  There’s over a couple thousand comments worth of ideas, notes, and other information, including casting directors, and former contestants (other than myself), so if you have some time it’s worth exploring.  Here are the vital links:

  • NBC has posted casting information and the application here.
  • Pete Thomas, the season 2 $100,000 winner has some of the best casting call advice out there, which you can find at www.WinningMan.com.
  • Jen Kerns, a season three contestant like myself, and a doctor for the show for seasons four and five, has also put together some fantastic casting advice that you can read here.
  • My original casting tips post with over a thousand comments worth of discussion, click here.  Stacy, Adam, Phil, Amy and Coleen were all reading and posting in the discussion there – it’s fun to look back and realize they were some of the superstars of season six!
  • My second post (fairly identical to this one), with well over two thousand comments worth of discussion, click here.
  • If you’re dealing with disappointment about not being cast, then check out my post on Biggest Loser casting disappointment.

One of the questions I hear a lot is about money … how do contestants afford to be away from home and work for months at a time?  I don’t know what it is now, but when I was a contestant there was a $500 a week stipend for cast members on the ranch.  When you received the check you could cash it and spend it, send it home, save it, whatever.  All airplane tickets, hotel accommodations, etc., for the contestants and potential cast members are taken care of by NBC, and during the casting process it self there was a $50 per diem to cover food costs.

Another question is timing; typically a season lasts for about 8-9 months.  About four of this is spent in filming; if you last all the way until the final three or four, you could be away from home for as much as four months or so.  Once the ranch filming wraps and the last few contestants are sent home, however, there is still another four or five months that all the contestants have to continue losing weight until the finale.  In addition, potential cast members are flown out to California a couple weeks before filming begins for the final round of casting, medical checkups, psychological evals, etc.  NBC brings out more people than what they need and the cast is not finalized until filming literally begins.  People have been cut at the last minute and replacements flown in with hardly any time to spare.  Nothing is in stone until it’s on camera!

When will you hear from Biggest Loser about your video?  There is no way of knowing.  I heard back a few weeks after I sent it in, but even after that it’s a big waiting game.  If you get a phone number or email from a casting direction, definitely drop them a line/call every couple weeks to find out if you’re still in the running or what’s going on.  Schedules and plans change almost every day, so it’s easy to get lost in the shuffle.  If you don’t hear back within a month I would think your video didn’t make the cut.  That doesn’t mean you can’t send in another or visit a casting call – it’s just up to you!

Finally, here’s my video application tips!  This is by no means a recipe for success; it’s based on my video application and the conversations I had with casting directors out in LA in between things.  I was pretty curious about the whole process so I was pumping them for info even after filming began.  I’m such a nerd!

  • They’ve usually decided if they’re interested in you within the first 30-60 seconds of your video, so front load it with your best stuff.  Make it interesting!  Start off with something funny or exciting!
  • Keep in mind, if you’re going to be cast, your video is going to be watched hundreds of times by producers, executives, casting directors, etc.  If it bores you or your friends the second or third time watching it … put some more time into it!
  • Special effects?  Don’t bother!  We’ve all got video editing software with all sorts of bells and whistles on our home computers, but fancy transitions are not going to sell you to people who do video editing for a living.  In fact, it can distract from who you are.  I’m a video editing nerd and I didn’t use any special effects other than putting my name and contact info on as a subtitle at the beginning.
  • Don’t bother talking about why you need to lose weight.  When I first started filming my audition video I started describing all of my health reasons for losing weight – but when I was watching it back, I realized … they don’t need to hear it!  One look at me was all they needed to know I needed to lose weight!  Show them why you need to lose it; I said I needed to lose weight for my kids, and then I followed it with a minute or two of the best footage I could find of me with wrestling with my three boys.  We probably filmed half an hour of that insanity and I grabbed the cutest, loudest, and funniest few moments for the audition video.  Your physical need to lose weight is not nearly as interesting as who or what your losing the weight for.
  • Live loud!  Reality TV is over the top, dramatic, and filled with loud personalities.  They need to see that on your video!  I wanted them to know that even though  I was morbidly obese I was up to the challenge of the crazy competitions and workouts – so I threw on a bunch of clips from my different youth group activities; me getting slimed, snowtubing, playing paintball, screaming at events, being on stage, running around … you get the idea.  Other contestants did things appropriate to their lives; Tim from Oregon had himself spinning out on his Harley, Tim from Delaware recruited his elementary school class to do things with him, Heather Hanson filmed herself running around in a sports bra all day doing her household chores and errands.  The less talking and more action you can have, the better (in my opinion)!
  • If you have footage or photos of yourself thin, include those at some point on the video.  If you can show them what your after will be, then do it!

Remember, enjoy the conversation here and know that I will never compromise your anonymity – not to NBC, 3Ball, Casting Directors or anyone.  You can post anonymously, or you can leave your names and contact information … just remember that NBC likes to be the one announcing their cast for the show, so if you start identifying yourself publicly as a finalist, you’ll probably find yourself eliminated from the casting process.  Good luck to everyone … and let me know if you make the show!  Pete Thomas has more contestants on season seven than I did and I’m bitter!  😉

  1. Thank you Dj! I was also wondering how I could get a V.I.P pass for L.A casting call. I emailed tad but i am not sure if he is the right person to email. I also sent in a tape already on Monday. I would love to know.

  2. onthesideline- Is your schedule going to allow you to attend the Phoenix CC? Or did you get a call back from the Dallas CC leaving no need to attend the Phoenix CC?

I'm not nearly as nervous as I was a few days ago. Hopefully this trend continues right into Saturday. 🙂
I most definitely owe the calmness to all of the info here and on Pete's blog. Everyone is sooooo amazing!

If you're still here DJ, do you happen to know if the VIP passes are generic? I got one from Tad and it has no city listed. I am going to LA..do I need a different one or will this one work?

  7. this site is amazing, and it has helped so much! I feel like I know what I'm getting into… TOMORROW (technically)! I am super super excited and thanks to everyone for all the advice and support. I've been a creepy lurker for awhile now, and I'm so glad I finally posted! Good luck to everyone whether you make it to the ranch or not! This site is the perfect place to come for the support we need to lose this extra padding!

    Headingtotheranch:

I received two versions of the VIP pass. The one I received from a former BL contestant did not specify a city/date, but the one I received from CD did have a date/city, so that could be the discrepancy.

p.s. Anyone else having insomnia? lol.

Gettingoffthecouch – Hmm, thanks! I got mine from a current cd. I hope it's ok to use at the LA Casting..

    It's only 11:43 here in LA….not bedtime yet 🙂

Yeah 1:44am here in South Dakota (the middle of nowhere state that gets to travel 15 hours to a casting call, muwhaha). However, I got everything from my 'to do' list all done today so tomorrow is just drive drive drive.

I'm sure your VIP pass will be fine to use, especially if you got it from a current CD.

Ooh, drive safe! Where are you headed?

  13. why thank you, heading to the ranch! I am addicted to this site, and I cannot sleep, so i keep checking up every once in awhile!

  14. Hey all my fellow BL video vixen application people, looks like a deadline just went up on the NBC BL site for Season 8 videos and apps!

"PLEASE NOTE: March 31st is the deadline for submitting tapes and applications. There is no guarantee that tapes and applications received after the March 31st will be reviewed in time for season 8."

  15. Ahhhhh! It's tomorrow!! Im sooo nervous…probably just like the rest of you, lol! Anyway just want to wish you all luck…ofcoarse this morning I wake up with a cold and sore throat and Im talking all horse…just my luck 😛 I'm going anyway though, lol I won't let nothing get me down 😛

Thanks for all of the advice, and best wishes guys, keep keeping your fingers crossed for me, and I'll keep mind crossed for you as well! <3

    Miami here I come…

  16. DJ- Come back wait come back please……………. I was sleep when you were blogging. I just have one question for you…………..Can I send you a Jay Baby shirt to wear to the cc tomorrow! ;o) LOL!

Good morning everyone! It's a wonderful day let us rejoice and be glad in it! I really just came on here this morning to say GOOD LUCK to everyone tomorrow! I hope you have fun and enjoy yourselves!

Good morning, who are the CD's for Houston tomorrow??? Do you like my name? Sound it out people! LOL

  18. gettingoffthecouch – yeah!!! I am not the only one driving 15 hours to a cc but the one I am going to is in LA. Drive carefully and be safe!!!

I have heard people say that they had the generic VIP passes and had no problem. So I do not think we need to worry about them not having a city listed on it.

Good morning to all!! I ditto the best wished to everyone for their cc tomorrow.

  19. annenoni muss – he he he he ….. I get it !!!! Very clever!

  20. Good morning everybody I am hoping to get my bio email today

  21. annenoni muss: 1) I get it, lol and 2) I think the CD's from Dallas are the same CD's for houston (I am assuming since they are in the same state) Holland Striplin and Ian Young and another person (can't remember) were the CD's in Dallas. They all are really nice, but I will say if you have Ian his facial expressions give away ALL his thoughts. You will know whether he is interested in you or not when you talk…just saying, lol.

  22. Good morning all!
I am anxiously awaiting a call from a travel agent to get an estimate for me to travel to the cc's being held next weekend. I just decided that this is a once in a lifetime opportunity and I want the best chance possible.

I finished the last of the taping of my video last night. Ooohh I am so nervous!! I need to try to get it edited on my own today. I hope I can get it to work! I hope I am what they are looking for!

What were you all mentioning about a VIP pass?? (sorry that is probably not what it is called. I tried to check the post for it, but it was like findind a needle in a haystack!)

  23. I found the needle! So it is a VIP pass. I don't have contact with any CD's…how can a person get a VIP pass?

I am praying that if God finds a way for me to make it to L.A. or San Diego next weekend, that I will actually be able to be seen. I would be crushed if I travel all the way from North Dakota and spent all that money and wasn't even seen.

JayBaby!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Good morning…wake up – YOU could be the next contestant on THE BIGGEST LOSER!

  26. Good morning!!! I am off to get my nails, feet and hair done!! Need to look HOTT for the CD in Houston tomorrow!! (well as hot as a 550lb woman can look!!)

Good luck to everyone traveling today. Be safe and enjoy the journey. I hope everyone has a wonderful experience as we prepare. My Personal Trainer from 24 hour Fitness and I are going together tomorrow, He is auditioning as well. The ironic thing….I used to work for 24hour fitness! (kids club supervisor) lol

Whatever happens, just know that everything happens for a reason, and it will all happen JUST like it is supposed to! Worrying, fretting and making yourself nervous will not help the process at all! Relax, and have confidence that YOU are enough. 🙂 No need to not be yourself when you are in front of the CD's. 🙂 (I have to keep telling myself this!)

    YAY!!

  27. annenoni muss- I could be the next contestant on TBL??????/ Do you know something I don't know?????
    BTW cute name!

Yarra- of course you can look HOT! You don't have to be a skinny mini to be J Lo, Tyra, Beyonce or Pamela Anderson (which ever you prefer)! Have fun tomorrow. I agree everything happens for a reason!

  28. Oh my! The absolute CHEAPEST I can find to get to L.A. from Bismarck ND (where I live) is $700.00! *gulp*

Honest opinion (please) do you all think it would be worth it for me to spend the money to go?

  29. My casting call cost me the last 400 of my paycheck, but it was the best 400 dollars I've ever spent!

  30. DJ – I am glad you are here for Season 8. I thought you were not doing CC's this year? Anyway thanks a bunch for all the Correct information. See you this weekend.

  31. My husband said no. 🙁

    Good morning everyone!

Annabanana – wow, you are coming far!! Poohbear is coming a long way too! As I offered her, if you need any help knowing where to stay, getting around, etc…I am happy to help. I've lived here my entire life, lol. My email is biggest_loser@rocketmail.com

  33. Annabannana – No. I think you should send a tape in. If you spend that kind of money for 27 min. and then nothing, well I think that might be hard to handle. JMO.

  34. headingtotheranch Avatar
    headingtotheranch

Jaybaby – How old are you? I'm trying to build an image of you in my head…give me a range atleast…:)

  35. headingtotheranch Avatar
    headingtotheranch

Annabanana – yikes! I don't think you should spend that much on a ticket to come out. Like Firegirl said, focus on your tape. You have a few weeks to get it in!

  36. Thanks for the advice everyone. It is making the big N-O! seem much easier to handle. I guess I will just send in my tape and pray!

headingtotheranch…thanks so much for the offer of helping w/ hotel etc. You are very kind. Best of luck to you!!

Best of luck to you all!

So did everyone make the whole 10 mins with their tapes?

I am nervous I don't have enough taped to cover that. I will need to be creative to make it all work together too. Ugh.
With the tape being my only shot, I am getting super nervous about it!

  37. headingtotheranch Avatar
    headingtotheranch

Annabanana – I think the tape length should be as long as it NEEDS to be. I wouldn't fill it with stuff just to make it longer. I bet a 3-4 minute tape with great content is much better than a 10 minute boring video. They get 1000's of tapes. If it were me watching these tapes, and someone just filled 10 minutes with nothing to make it longer, I'd want my 10 minutes back, and I probably wouldn't call that person in for an interview, lol.

  38. LOL! Thanks headingtotheranch!

I think I should view some more tapes to use as a guideline for mine. Do any of you have your tapes posted on utube or anything?

  39. Annabanana….I agree. Don't spend that much money for a ticket. Deadline for tapes is March 31, so we still have A LITTLE time left to get the tapes in. I myself am working on a tape. But, I would've rather have went to a CC. I figure if I spend all that money to go to a CC and not make it, I'll be very disappointed. However, if I make a tape and don't make it, I won't feel so bad becuase it's not a whole lot of money I'm losing out on. Plus with making my tape I can show more of my personality and what I do on a daily basis.

  40. STILL WAITING!!

  41. Annabanana! What I would do if I were you?? Take that motivation and commitment you have…send in an awesome tape, and with the $700 you saved, get your self quite a few sessions with a Personal Trainer!

That way, if you make it onto the show GREAT!! If not, you have still used your motivation and determination to your advantage and are well on the way to a better you by getting healthy with the help of your trainer!! You can do it! 🙂

  42. headingtotheranch- I'm sure I look nothing like you think! LOL! My age is drumroll please…………………

75 minus the amount of days in Feb. and Oct. plus the number of disciples! Lets see if you get it! Heeee Heeee

  43. Thanks notgivinguphope and yarra.

Notgivinguphope…I am sure your tape will ROCK! You are right, we will just have to WOW them with our personality via tape. 🙂

Yarra, you have a GREAT idea about the personal trainer! Thank you for helping me see the forest through the trees. It is about getting the weight off and keeping it that way! And I LOVE personal training!! Now…do you think my husband will agree with the plan? lol!

  44. DJ- HELP A BROTHER OUT HERE! So what you are saying is if you are in the game lay low be patient and wait. It might be a while! One more thing! Under what circumstances are we allowed to contact someone on our status? If at all! Good luck this weekend in Columbus!

  45. headingtotheranch Avatar
    headingtotheranch

Annabanana – I don't think anyone from this group would have a tape posted…they really discourage that, and it can really hurt your chances. If you google or search youtube, you might find some from past seasons.

    …………….

    annabanana
My tape was 5 min and I got a call back from it.

  47. Annabanana! He BETTER support you! If not, the he is just holding you back an part of the problem! I say this ONLY because my husband IS part of the problem. BUT even with the obstacles our spouses can throw at us, we still can prevail. 🙂

Ask him how much he is willing to let you spend on a ticket, then take that amount and spend it on a trainer! If he is still resistant to you spending money, ask him "How important is it to you that I get healthy? That I am here for you (and kids if you have them), for a long, long time?" He shouldn't be able to put a price on that, but definitely should allow you to work within SOME kind of budget to help get you there!! (take the money you spend on eating out and put it to a trainer. 🙂 )

  48. headingtotheranch Avatar
    headingtotheranch

…………… – I think you're the first one we've heard that got a call from their tape. If you don't mind sharing, when did you mail it and about when did they call? Also, how are they doing your interview? I understand you can't be too specific so you don't give yourself away, but if you can shed some light…a lot of people on here would appreciate it!!

  49. Does anyone know what the contestants are allowed to bring with them on the show?? This is a serious question. 🙂 I can't find anything on the net about past contestants. I want to start imagining what I would pack for the trip. 🙂 Creative visualization baby!!

I wonder if they would let me bring my cat. I am going to miss him terribly and my husband is not going to cut it for him. He will be so sad that I am gone. Not to mention, he could stand to lose a few pounds too. He is leash/harness trained…I could tie him up to the treadmill next to me! (jk about the cat…i am going to miss him though)

But seriously, what are they allowed to bring? Pictures? Books? MP3 Players?
