COMMENTING IS CLOSED! THIS POST GOT TOO BIG! YOU CAN CONTINUE THE CONVERSATION ON THE BIGGEST LOSER CASTING TIPS (SEASON 8, PAGE 3) BLOG POST!

Okay, casting is well on it’s way for season eight of Biggest Loser.  I’m reposting this entry to enable people to continue the conversation started here.  There’s over a couple thousand comments worth of ideas, notes, and other information, including casting directors, and former contestants (other than myself), so if you have some time it’s worth exploring.  Here are the vital links:

  • NBC has posted casting information and the application here.
  • Pete Thomas, the season 2 $100,000 winner has some of the best casting call advice out there, which you can find at www.WinningMan.com.
  • Jen Kerns, a season three contestant like myself, and a doctor for the show for seasons four and five, has also put together some fantastic casting advice that you can read here.
  • My original casting tips post with over a thousand comments worth of discussion, click here.  Stacy, Adam, Phil, Amy and Coleen were all reading and posting in the discussion there – it’s fun to look back and realize they were some of the superstars of season six!
  • My second post (fairly identical to this one), with well over two thousand comments worth of discussion, click here.
  • If you’re dealing with disappointment about not being cast, then check out my post on Biggest Loser casting disappointment.

One of the questions I hear a lot is about money … how do contestants afford to be away from home and work for months at a time?  I don’t know what it is now, but when I was a contestant there was a $500 a week stipend for cast members on the ranch.  When you received the check you could cash it and spend it, send it home, save it, whatever.  All airplane tickets, hotel accommodations, etc., for the contestants and potential cast members are taken care of by NBC, and during the casting process it self there was a $50 per diem to cover food costs.

Another question is timing; typically a season lasts for about 8-9 months.  About four of this is spent in filming; if you last all the way until the final three or four, you could be away from home for as much as four months or so.  Once the ranch filming wraps and the last few contestants are sent home, however, there is still another four or five months that all the contestants have to continue losing weight until the finale.  In addition, potential cast members are flown out to California a couple weeks before filming begins for the final round of casting, medical checkups, psychological evals, etc.  NBC brings out more people than what they need and the cast is not finalized until filming literally begins.  People have been cut at the last minute and replacements flown in with hardly any time to spare.  Nothing is in stone until it’s on camera!

When will you hear from Biggest Loser about your video?  There is no way of knowing.  I heard back a few weeks after I sent it in, but even after that it’s a big waiting game.  If you get a phone number or email from a casting direction, definitely drop them a line/call every couple weeks to find out if you’re still in the running or what’s going on.  Schedules and plans change almost every day, so it’s easy to get lost in the shuffle.  If you don’t hear back within a month I would think your video didn’t make the cut.  That doesn’t mean you can’t send in another or visit a casting call – it’s just up to you!

Finally, here’s my video application tips!  This is by no means a recipe for success; it’s based on my video application and the conversations I had with casting directors out in LA in between things.  I was pretty curious about the whole process so I was pumping them for info even after filming began.  I’m such a nerd!

  • They’ve usually decided if they’re interested in you within the first 30-60 seconds of your video, so front load it with your best stuff.  Make it interesting!  Start off with something funny or exciting!
  • Keep in mind, if you’re going to be cast, your video is going to be watched hundreds of times by producers, executives, casting directors, etc.  If it bores you or your friends the second or third time watching it … put some more time into it!
  • Special effects?  Don’t bother!  We’ve all got video editing software with all sorts of bells and whistles on our home computers, but fancy transitions are not going to sell you to people who do video editing for a living.  In fact, it can distract from who you are.  I’m a video editing nerd and I didn’t use any special effects other than putting my name and contact info on as a subtitle at the beginning.
  • Don’t bother talking about why you need to lose weight.  When I first started filming my audition video I started describing all of my health reasons for losing weight – but when I was watching it back, I realized … they don’t need to hear it!  One look at me was all they needed to know I needed to lose weight!  Show them why you need to lose it; I said I needed to lose weight for my kids, and then I followed it with a minute or two of the best footage I could find of me with wrestling with my three boys.  We probably filmed half an hour of that insanity and I grabbed the cutest, loudest, and funniest few moments for the audition video.  Your physical need to lose weight is not nearly as interesting as who or what your losing the weight for.
  • Live loud!  Reality TV is over the top, dramatic, and filled with loud personalities.  They need to see that on your video!  I wanted them to know that even though  I was morbidly obese I was up to the challenge of the crazy competitions and workouts – so I threw on a bunch of clips from my different youth group activities; me getting slimed, snowtubing, playing paintball, screaming at events, being on stage, running around … you get the idea.  Other contestants did things appropriate to their lives; Tim from Oregon had himself spinning out on his Harley, Tim from Delaware recruited his elementary school class to do things with him, Heather Hanson filmed herself running around in a sports bra all day doing her household chores and errands.  The less talking and more action you can have, the better (in my opinion)!
  • If you have footage or photos of yourself thin, include those at some point on the video.  If you can show them what your after will be, then do it!

Remember, enjoy the conversation here and know that I will never compromise your anonymity – not to NBC, 3Ball, Casting Directors or anyone.  You can post anonymously, or you can leave your names and contact information … just remember that NBC likes to be the one announcing their cast for the show, so if you start identifying yourself publicly as a finalist, you’ll probably find yourself eliminated from the casting process.  Good luck to everyone … and let me know if you make the show!  Pete Thomas has more contestants on season seven than I did and I’m bitter!  😉

Houston traffic is terrible – give yourself enough time to get to the audition in time. Very aggressive drivers!

    …………….

headingtotheranch- I've posted this information before on page 1. It took about 6 weeks for a call back. I was asked to go to a cc. If they liked me at cc then I would have been asked to go to a one on one. I went to a one on one and now I'm in the same boat as everyone else, waiting for more information to be sent to me.

Yarra – Matt said you can bring books. I think mp3s are allowed but limited to "dark days" (no filming)…and after he said that I did realize you never see them wearing one while they work out. I'm betting this is a advertising/product placement issue, since the only name brands we see are the ones that have paid to be seen. I'm guessing if Apple decided to become a sponsor, we'd see Ipods on everyone all the time, lol.

Don't know about pictures, I've wondered that too.

  4. annenonimuss- I have a VIP pass. 🙂 I am not worried about traffic. I plan on being there with my trainer at 1200

  5. Jay Baby………are you 28??? I know that was directed to me, but I couldn't help but to try and figure it out. LOL!! 🙂

………….ok, I do remember someone from the other page saying that. I wonder what would have happened if you couldn't go to a casting call? There have got to be people out there who have no way to go to one.

    JayBaby – that would be 75-28 (assuming not a leap year) = 47, minus 31 = 16, plus 12 (I've read my Bible) = 28

That's so funny, I pictured you in your 40's

    …………….

I actually know someone that happened to one season and they were knocked out of the competition due to not being able to attend a cc. Things may be different now though.

………….. – Wow! I think Matt McNutt actually was cast from his video and didn't attend a casting call, so maybe they have different categories. Like, the people they LOVE get a pass, but the people they like enough to want to meet in person, but aren't giving a "pass" for whatever reason, they tell you to go to a casting call? That is still something to be really excited about! 1000's never get anything….

  10. LoL…you all are too funny, making me laugh when im in my panic mode…haha! I am leaving here at 2am tonight and heading to Miami…Im hoping to get there around 8am, although I have a VIP Pass, not sure if I will use it or not, depends on the line, and the people I get in line with. I as well want to do this for the experience, I just LOVE meeting new people, expecially some with personalities like yourselves! Anyway good luck to you all, If you see me drop off this board after tomorrow- keep your fingers crossed for me <3

Thanks to everyone who offered advice, and helped myself and the rest of us on this board. You all rock!

Let's hope for another big season…I have 190 lbs to lose!

    <3 <3 <3

  11. headingtotheranch and notgivinguphope- You' re correct I am 28! You thought I was in my 40's???????? Oh no, that must mean I have an old spirit or something! LOL! Maybe I should invent some Viagra for the spirit! It's tag line will be to the spirit young for lasting satisfaction.

  12. I understand about not posting the tapes. I will try to view some past season tapes on utube.

I thought I had read on here that this season they are looking for individuals that do not dwell in the past and are competitive…do you all remember what else they are lookiing for…well, besides personality?

annabanana where did you see that?

  14. I "thought" on here…but I could be losing it! LOL! Maybe I dreamt it?

Just to check if I am crazy or not…did anyone else remember seeing that info on here?

  15. Jay Baby….It would be wicked kewl if we all got on the ranch together. You seem like you would be alot of fun to be around.

annabanna, I don't recall ever reading that on here or seeing it anywhere. I've just read they are casting individuals for season 8 and couples season 9. Although, I hope they change their mind for season 9 and make it singles too.

  16. Okay, I can breathe a sigh of relief at this point regarding the video! I was freakin' out about the length! At first I thought… 10 minutes?! I can't fit my life in 10 minutes, but now that it comes down to it… I can totally fit my life in about 4 minutes! HA!

I am hoping to get the video finished this weekend and overnight it Monday! My parents are looking for pictures of me when I was young and skinny and played tennis and softball. eeeeeeeeekkkk I'm SO EXCITED!!!

Also, I read somewhere on here that someone saw an 11 page application. The one I printed was only 9 pages…. am I missing something here?!

  17. notgivinguphope- believe me, when I get on the ranch… I'm gonna ask every contestant if they used the Matthew McNutt Casting Tips Blog… and ya'll better give up your screen names so we can figure out who is who and use all of this awesome encouragement at the ranch!

Shelly – good point about Matt, though certainly not taking anything away from his being cast.

I'm wondering if anyone else who has already been to a casting is willing to share what some of the answers at their tables were? You don't have to share your own, just a few from your table, if you'd be so willing??? 😉

  19. Someone gave the definition of type A personality. I think that is what you are referring to. Jay Baby, I have to say you are quite amusing and i love your personality. Curious -that is not what DJ was trying to say, it is exactly what he said. I find you totally annoying!

  20. I am so nervous tomorrow is my cc….

motsy – what do you mean about it being a con?

  22. negative

  23. running late….i think that was a typing error. The application that you print off is 9 pages. A 11 page application doesn't exist. Of course I'll tell you my name on here when we make it to the ranch. I know my chances of making it are slim to none. But, you have to have faith you will make it. I've been posting on this site for awhile now and I hope we ALL make it to the ranch.

  24. I love you ……….. (come on think of a clever name)

Julie Haden – stay at home mom

    Other names escaped me 🙂

  25. Shelly – I will leave you alone, I like your name 😉

  26. Tracey-

Detroit had 1132 people show up and be seen! They only called back 28 (including the trainers).

I'm curious about some people's CC experience. My table last week was so polite there was no need to get loud. The only real questions I was asked had the answer on my app! (Height, weight, etc). Do they all do it the same way?

  27. Notgivinguphope- Your chances are slim to none????????? Why would you say such a thing? Miracles happen everyday and this miracle may just come true for you!

  28. I have a question. There was someone who posted saying they took their camcorder and taped somethin on their computer. I was wondering how that worked out for you and if you got a CB from it. I forget who that was though.

If you read this message, did get a CB and don't want to post it here, please email me. blnotgivinguphope@yahoo.com

Kiki – are you sure? I think Julie worked. If you watch her tape, she is seen at a desk, like in a cubicle. I know they adopted a baby just after the show, so maybe she is now, but I think she worked….though, again…I could be totally wrong. Unless that is the wrong Julie.

Gonna have to tear myself away for a few hours, things to do…but look forward to later when I get to read all the stuff you all will post between now and then, lol!!!

  30. I am going to the cc in phoenix i think i can hang…If i stood in line at best buy from 5 p.m till 5 a.m. next day for black friday i can do this….LOl

  31. Jay Baby, I guess I'm trying to be realistic about the whole thing. You're right though, micracles do happen every day. Maybe this is mine, especially with not working. I had an interview last week and I'm assuming I didn't get it, since I didn't get called. So, I'm DETERMINED to make it to the ranch, as long as the CD like me and I'm what they're looking for.

  32. No Julie was a stay at home mom. she didnt have a car and drove a golf cart to her sons school.

    About me:
Julie Hadden is a 35 year old stay-at-home mom from Jacksonville, FL. She struggled with weight issues and low self esteem for most of her life. Her bubbly personality and humor served as the perfect camouflage for the pain she kept inside. Only those very closest to her knew of the internal struggles she endured for years. Then in April of 2007 she was cast – along with 17 other incredible individuals – to be part of Season Four of the NBC Hit Reality Show “The Biggest Loser.” Through equal parts hard work and strategy, Julie persevered and made it to the end at a member of the “Final Four.” Her journey on “The Biggest Loser” chronicled her emotional battle with obesity on national television for all of America to see. It was a private struggle that became very public – but in the process it has transformed Julie’s life and to her own amazement has provided inspiration for others as well. On December 18, 2007, Julie became the “Biggest Female Loser of Season Four” and finished in second place for the overall title to Bill Germanakos; Losing a staggering 44.5% of her body weight. Even after the wrapping of Season 5 of the Biggest Loser, Julie remains among the top four women with the highest percentage of weight loss in the history of the Show. Her participation in the Biggest Loser opened many doors for her. She has appeared on Access Hollywood, Entertainment Tonight, The Larry King Live Show and in numerous other magazines and print publications throughout the U.S. She promoted the Million Pound Match Up in Wichita KS and often addresses groups within her own community providing inspiration on healthy living, fitness and how extraordinary things really do happen to ordinary people. One of the big motivators for Julie losing weight and taking control of her health and her life was her desire to have another baby. That prayer was recently answered – though not quite as she expected. She and her husband adopted a beautiful baby boy a little over a month after the Season 4 Finale. Now her workout routine includes late night feedings and diaper changes. But she wouldn’t have it any other way. For more about Julie, visit her Web site at http://www.JulieHadden.com

  33. no its not. I just have met a lot of shelleys and I have loved them all

  34. crazyyellowwife……I agree. I seriously think Tara can win it. That girl is unstopable. This VERY well could be another season a girl wins it. Then season 8 will have another female winner….ME!!!

When I lost my job, my pastor's wife told me God had something special in mind for me. I can't help but wonder if this is it, especially since I can't find another job.

Jay Baby….your math problem was FLIPPIN hilarious!!!! I sure pulled my calculator out and started punchin numbers…made me chuckle big time!!!

  36. Notgivinguphope- That a girl or guy! ;o) I love when people tell me to be realistic. What is realistic to one may not be a reality for another. If there is a chance in your mind that you could actually be picked for BL, then your hope in being on the show is REALISTIC! It may be hard to get on but not impossible and anything that is possible should be looked at as realism, IMO!

  37. DJ- I recieved a call two weeks ago and set up an interview time…..but I have not recieved any email on where to go this Sunday. Does that mean while setting up the interview the CD IY decided that he didn't like me? I guess I am just confused. Could you help me out?

  38. I agree about Tara, she is fan-freakin-tastic! I don't think she and I would butt heads, I think we would probably become best buds. She seems like that kind of person, very genuine, but move out of her way! I think it would become a game with us, to see who would win which competition. WHAT CONTESTANT ARE YOU MOST LIKE???

  39. If ANYONE says Joelle, I'm gonna scream! hahahahaha I would have been up in her face, words flying. 🙂

  40. Tara is my favorite!

  41. Ok…how about a "What if" question?

If you are chosen as a contestant and could choose your trainer (Bob or Jillian), who would you choose?

  42. Jillian. Bob seems to be letting this show get the best of him. I mean come on he tries to control the voting, he tells Kristen she will be Sione. Im just not feeling him. Hands down Jillian!

  43. ***beat***oops

  44. I think Jillian and I would definately butt heads. If she cusses in my face, not every time, but if she really gets me rowled up, I may cuss back at her. I can't stand to be yelled at, but HEY, if it helps me get my butt in gear and lose this weight, I'm ALL IN!

  45. Ahhh! I can say I am most like Kristin. I think she rocks! Tara is tough competition, but thats what I'm all about…

although…I'd love to be the next Julie Hadden…I weigh like 100 lbs more than her starting out, but her story is almost exactly like mine, I even have the red-headed son to match <3

    Wish me luck <3

and oh…I so hope Bob pick's me when we are on the Ranch…then again Jillian is amazing too…who knows??

  46. i would choose bob cuz he's fyyyyyyne! just kiddin, I would choose him cuz he's a sweetheart. okay, um I mean because he has a nice smile. ugh, I'm not going anywhere with this…. *sigh*

  47. I think they are both awesome trainers but I think I would connect more with Jillian because I have always had female trainers. Plus, I don't mind the "tough-love" she dishes out. She sure can be scary sometimes though! LOL!

  48. I'm all for Jills!!! I want my boodie kicked and I know she'll be the one to kick it!

  49. jay baby…..I am a girl (31) and like my name says, I'm NOT giving up.

annenoni muss …… I TOTALLY agree with you. Not only is Bob fyyyyyne like you said, he's also a sweetheart. I think he could reach me on an emotional level. Whereas with Jillian, I would need the tough love she dishes out. Yes she's hard on people, but only because she wants you to succeed. Actually they both do, I would be happy with either trainer. Heck, I would also be happy with Kim. I didn't have a problem with her on the show.

Oh…this is totally RANDOM….but I'm HIGHLY addicted to Farm Town on Facebook. :))))

  50. Even though I would WANT to be on Bob's team, I actually NEED to be on Jillian's because she WILL put me in my place and get me off my booty!
