COMMENTING IS CLOSED! THIS POST GOT TOO BIG! YOU CAN CONTINUE THE CONVERSATION ON THE BIGGEST LOSER CASTING TIPS (SEASON 8, PAGE 3) BLOG POST!

Okay, casting is well on it’s way for season eight of Biggest Loser. I’m reposting this entry to enable people to continue the conversation started here. There’s over a couple thousand comments worth of ideas, notes, and other information, including casting directors, and former contestants (other than myself), so if you have some time it’s worth exploring. Here are the vital links:
- NBC has posted casting information and the application here.
- Pete Thomas, the season 2 $100,000 winner has some of the best casting call advice out there, which you can find at www.WinningMan.com.
- Jen Kerns, a season three contestant like myself, and a doctor for the show for seasons four and five, has also put together some fantastic casting advice that you can read here.
- My original casting tips post with over a thousand comments worth of discussion, click here. Stacy, Adam, Phil, Amy and Coleen were all reading and posting in the discussion there – it’s fun to look back and realize they were some of the superstars of season six!
- My second post (fairly identical to this one), with well over two thousand comments worth of discussion, click here.
- If you’re dealing with disappointment about not being cast, then check out my post on Biggest Loser casting disappointment.
One of the questions I hear a lot is about money … how do contestants afford to be away from home and work for months at a time? I don’t know what it is now, but when I was a contestant there was a $500 a week stipend for cast members on the ranch. When you received the check you could cash it and spend it, send it home, save it, whatever. All airplane tickets, hotel accommodations, etc., for the contestants and potential cast members are taken care of by NBC, and during the casting process it self there was a $50 per diem to cover food costs.
Another question is timing; typically a season lasts for about 8-9 months. About four of this is spent in filming; if you last all the way until the final three or four, you could be away from home for as much as four months or so. Once the ranch filming wraps and the last few contestants are sent home, however, there is still another four or five months that all the contestants have to continue losing weight until the finale. In addition, potential cast members are flown out to California a couple weeks before filming begins for the final round of casting, medical checkups, psychological evals, etc. NBC brings out more people than what they need and the cast is not finalized until filming literally begins. People have been cut at the last minute and replacements flown in with hardly any time to spare. Nothing is in stone until it’s on camera!
When will you hear from Biggest Loser about your video? There is no way of knowing. I heard back a few weeks after I sent it in, but even after that it’s a big waiting game. If you get a phone number or email from a casting direction, definitely drop them a line/call every couple weeks to find out if you’re still in the running or what’s going on. Schedules and plans change almost every day, so it’s easy to get lost in the shuffle. If you don’t hear back within a month I would think your video didn’t make the cut. That doesn’t mean you can’t send in another or visit a casting call – it’s just up to you!
Finally, here’s my video application tips! This is by no means a recipe for success; it’s based on my video application and the conversations I had with casting directors out in LA in between things. I was pretty curious about the whole process so I was pumping them for info even after filming began. I’m such a nerd!
-
They’ve usually decided if they’re interested in you within the first 30-60 seconds of your video, so front load it with your best stuff. Make it interesting! Start off with something funny or exciting!
-
Keep in mind, if you’re going to be cast, your video is going to be watched hundreds of times by producers, executives, casting directors, etc. If it bores you or your friends the second or third time watching it … put some more time into it!
-
Special effects? Don’t bother! We’ve all got video editing software with all sorts of bells and whistles on our home computers, but fancy transitions are not going to sell you to people who do video editing for a living. In fact, it can distract from who you are. I’m a video editing nerd and I didn’t use any special effects other than putting my name and contact info on as a subtitle at the beginning.
-
Don’t bother talking about why you need to lose weight. When I first started filming my audition video I started describing all of my health reasons for losing weight – but when I was watching it back, I realized … they don’t need to hear it! One look at me was all they needed to know I needed to lose weight! Show them why you need to lose it; I said I needed to lose weight for my kids, and then I followed it with a minute or two of the best footage I could find of me with wrestling with my three boys. We probably filmed half an hour of that insanity and I grabbed the cutest, loudest, and funniest few moments for the audition video. Your physical need to lose weight is not nearly as interesting as who or what your losing the weight for.
-
Live loud! Reality TV is over the top, dramatic, and filled with loud personalities. They need to see that on your video! I wanted them to know that even though I was morbidly obese I was up to the challenge of the crazy competitions and workouts – so I threw on a bunch of clips from my different youth group activities; me getting slimed, snowtubing, playing paintball, screaming at events, being on stage, running around … you get the idea. Other contestants did things appropriate to their lives; Tim from Oregon had himself spinning out on his Harley, Tim from Delaware recruited his elementary school class to do things with him, Heather Hanson filmed herself running around in a sports bra all day doing her household chores and errands. The less talking and more action you can have, the better (in my opinion)!
-
If you have footage or photos of yourself thin, include those at some point on the video. If you can show them what your after will be, then do it!
Remember, enjoy the conversation here and know that I will never compromise your anonymity – not to NBC, 3Ball, Casting Directors or anyone. You can post anonymously, or you can leave your names and contact information … just remember that NBC likes to be the one announcing their cast for the show, so if you start identifying yourself publicly as a finalist, you’ll probably find yourself eliminated from the casting process. Good luck to everyone … and let me know if you make the show! Pete Thomas has more contestants on season seven than I did and I’m bitter! 😉

BLDivah- I attended the Charlotte CC. Paul was the CD for my group. I was in total shock for the first two questions/comments that he spoke out of his mouth. I had no idea what everyone was saying. I could not understand a word of what was being said. Two people stood out in the group. One male because his hair was different (very curly/blonde color). Paul used his hair for a question – What do you think about his hair? The other person was a female that was dressed in a brown suit with a red shirt. Once again her hair was different. It had a silver streak on the front of it. She also had a beautiful complexion – her face had a glow to it. Now, I wonder if she got a CB, especially since she was the one in the group that got the last reply in on several of the questions. I know that I am not getting a CB because I was in shock the entire time. I am sending my video and application in as Paul informed us because I know I was out of the running. Oh well, I agree with you on the lack of CB from the Charlotte CC. Unless, those individuals do not read or post to this blog. I just started reading it and opted to type my two cents worth.
It is informative, entertaining, and addictive to read. Congratulations to everyone that is moving on and Good Luck, and Keep Hope Alive.
Still wondering if anyone from Chicago CC has moved past the one on one interview????
*passed not past
wheresmycb?……I'm about 2 1/2 hrs from Pittsburgh.
Jellybelly……I kinda feel the same way you do. There are times when I don't know who I really am. In MANY MANY ways Biggest Loser would be GREAT for me.
Hi guys I'm back! I haven't checked in since cc last week in Oklahoma! You guys have been busy on here! Thanks Matt for the new page! From the blog which city seems to have had the most call backs so far? My experience in Oklahoma was great. I had Ian as a CD. You could tell who he liked and who he didn't. I thought it was prety funny. It was weird to me that people could have a complete melt down in less than 30 seconds! I was the 2nd person to speak at my table and I was chipper and excited and the lady next to me was crying while I was speaking. I felt sorry for her but I was also like get a grip lady it's my time to shine. There was another lady that was so pretty all she talked about was being sooooo in love with her husband, I had to check myself to see if I was auditioning for a weight loss show or trading spouses or something LOL!
Over all it was great and I'm so excited for the rest of you to go to cc and hopefully have a wonderful experience! I would say try to relax and focus on meeting lots of people! I know if I don't make the show at least I've walked away with new friends from all over the country!
Blessme…the request for medical information came soon before finalists were notified…it was toward the end of the casting process…probably 5 weeks or so after the casting call. But of course, the timeline will depend on when your casting call is and when filming begins, etc.
Excited…I know contestants can have Type 2 Diabetes, but I don't know about Type 1. As for hypothyroidism, I think that may be a deal-breaker…I think I read that in Dr. H's book "Where Did All the Fat Go?" Things could have changed, though.
The medical documents didn't classify problems and say that people with certain health issues won't be concerned…it just asked if you have certain conditions (a medical history) and asked for your doctor to sign saying that you could participate in a program featuring moderate/intense activity and moderate calorie restriction.
Btw…"concerned" should be "considered." Sowwwy…
WOW! I have hypothyroidism. I wish they would have told us this before getting our hopes up. Should I contact my CD and let them know that I have hypothyroidism? This sucks so bad, it's hard enough for people with this issue to lose weight, you would think a show like this would want to help us not throw us to curb so we can continue to gain weight and struggle to lose. Well there goes my hopes and dreams of finally finding help. Thanks for the warning Rinse & Repeat, too bad it couldn't have come before I spent all that money and time going to a casting call.
Good Luck to everyone else. I'm leaving to go cry now.
You know, I just thought of something. Not all people are big because they eat alot. I had a cousin who was big, but didn't eat much at all. He gained ALOT of weight because of the medication he was on. He was so big that he had an electric wheel chair to get around. Unfortunately he died a couple years again. I'm still not 100% sure what killed him.
Blessme!- Please don't cry hun. You are going to make me cry. Things are going to be okay. Biggest loser or not I'm sure God has already designed a path for you and your weight loss. Don't be discouraged. Keep the faith! Maybe you will be the person that makes the producers change their mind about hypothyroidism. Maybe one season will be dedicated to helping people with this issue.
On a flip side I looked up what you said about Hollie and thyroid and it appears to be true! If they gave her a chance I'm sure you'll get one too! I'll add you to my prayers tonight. Here is the link about Hollie. http://www.dingorue.com/2007/12/01/the-biggest-lo…
I read pretty much every post on this board, and Im curious if anyone from dallas got a callback. Im also curious, what happens after you do get a call back interview. How much longer after that point do you wait?
Wow. I had no intention of upsetting anyone. In his book, Dr. H said that he ruled out people who had hypothyroidism, but that was the policy YEARS ago. As the show has progressed and as others have pointed out, that may not be the way it is anymore.
rinse & repeat – i read that too.
DONT CRY PEOPLE! Both Hollie and Nicole from season 4 had Hypothyroidism! It makes things harder, but Hollie made the finals, so i'm sure they arent afraid to work with you!
forgot to subscribe
Camcorders – anyone in the market to purchase a camcorder, take a look at JVC Everio S Series. It doesn't run on tape or DVD, it runs on SD/SDHC cards. I'm sure the other brands have something similar, this just happens to be the one I chose. It worked perfectly and I am 100% happy with it. It is also very easy to tranfer video directly to the computer. They run around 299, but well worth the money if you are in the market to purchase one.
Good luck everyone.
Have all the BL finalist been discovered at casting calls or have some been discovered from the video sent in?
Do you have to bring the application to the casting call as well as a picture?
I would like to add my two cents/tips since I have worked on the show over the past 5 seasons as a Casting Director. Matthew runs a great site here, and I think his hometape suggestions are great!
HOMETAPES:
(Matthew has mapped it out so well and I always send his link out to those who are interested in making a tape for ANY show I do).
Sure creativity is a good thing, but at the end of the day, it's YOU and your personality that make the show. Odds are you will have make a follow up tape as well, if you get further in the process. Don't overthink it. Turn the camera on, and be you! You've seen the show, it's a bunch of real people on there, not actors. I will be honest, if you are uncomfortable making a home video, how will you be able to be on tv every week for as many as 14 weeks?
Make sure you can hear yourself and SEE yourself (and partner when applicable) on the tape. Because if you can't then we can't. Keep a copy of it as well, in case it gets lost.
For those who don't own cameras, you can always borrow or rent them. I even tell people to check in w/ local universities and craigslist as there are always aspiring students/filmakers out there looking to get better at their craft too.
Quick note on lighting. If you have the lighting behind you, you only end up as a silhouette, so the light should be in front of you. Honestly, a good hometape may be as brief as 3 mins. If it shows who YOU are. Simple is best.
OPEN CASTING CALLS (Again, more great insight on Matthew's site from Dr. Jen Kerns)
With the show becoming more popular than ever, and more people out of work these days, the open calls have grown in number. I think it's best to start by going to an open call.
After reading this board, I see some of you are concerned with which Casting Director will be in what city. We are all looking for the same thing. That said, don't give up, b/c like anything else, the more you do something the more comfortable you get, and you may find a better way to present yourself, etc. Coleen went to several open calls, and look where she is now! And sure, one Director might see/hear something from you in one city that you didn't do/say in another.
(The hardest thing for actors in LA are the auditions! and you get better/more comfortable with each one.)
Have fun at the open call, so many people over the years have told me they have made friends, formed their own Biggest Loser clubs, and have become each others support group. At the end of the day, this is still a TV show, and an upbeat positive attitude is certainly going to get noticed.
Where else will you find a 1,000 people with the same common bond than a Saturday Biggest Loser casting call!?!?
People have asked how to dress. Don't you want to look your best when you make a first impression on someone? I do suggest bringing a photo too. Makes it SO much easier for us to remember you.
Face Painters this note goes to you! DO NOT DO IT FOR ANY SHOW.
a) I cannot see who you are
b) you will not be able to paint your face on the show, so why do it for the open call????
CALLBACKS:
Some of the Casting Directors begin booking their callback interviews at the open call, sometimes it takes a few days to really narrow down everyone. (That's where we vary a bit).
Callback interview length, I have seen this debated for years. Honestly it could be anywhere from 15 mins to 1 hour. The length of time means N-O-T-H-I-N-G. Some of my favorite cast members were 15 minute interviews, some were 1 hr.
Obviously the more you hear from our office, the further you are getting in the process, and it is exciting, but, I suggest you don't post on the boards, as you get further along.
We try our absolute best to get it right, and please everyone out there. Imagine any job out there with over 200,000 applicants (many of whom are worthy), and less than 20 spots available.
I cannot tell you how many people have emailed me over the years to share their own success stories with me. Remember the show is a just that, a TV show. Of course the message is fantastic and uplifting, but, at the end of the day we can only select a few for this opportunity, please don't let it stop you from achieving your goals on your own. I really do wish you the best, and am so glad the show has had such a positive impact on weight loss and improved overall health.
Just know, we all take this show very seriously and realize how important this show is to all of you out there! We appreciate that you share a sensitive subject like weight loss, we know it's hard.
I hope this helps, and clears up some of the misinformation out there.
One last thing. DO NOT PAY FOR THE FOLLOWING:
– Applications
– Websites asking for your money to take photos for you and submit you for the show
Best of luck, and hope you keep enjoying the show!
— DJ
mimi–An assistant will have a short application for you to fill out. It is only one page…not 9 pages. It sounds like all the CDs want a picture of you except for Paul. Good luck!
DJ–Wow! Thank you SO MUCH for taking your time and givng us all of this information.
Since my casting call is the 14th, sounds like things will move a lot faster for anyone getting called back from that one, if filming starts the first week of May, we'll only have 6-7 weeks from casting call to shooting!!
THANKS DJ!!!! It's so nice to have casting people come by and leave tips for us! It gives us hope and confidence going into the casting process, and hopefully helps you guys find what you're looking for, too.
I hope you're enjoying your stay in Dallas!
A few more quick things as I see people are reading some of the stuff I wrote.
PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE do not call our office to "check in", I promise if we want you for the show, we will find you. We have been on for 7 seasons and NEVER started and said, "oh my gosh, we forgot to call so and so, I wish he/she had just checked in."
Yes, sometimes the dates get moved a bit, remember EVERYTHING is subject to change, and this is not the ONLY show on NBC's lineup. So, sometimes dates of things get moved around here and there.
So, if you are hearing dates you will hear by/show starting, look at that a general timeframe, with the possibility of dates shifting here and there.
Wow, thank you DJ. We all can speculate about every inch of the process, but at the end of the day, it's you, the experts that really give us the facts. It's greatly appreciated and super helpful!!
thanks for the info lilacdaisy!
Just figures I got the CD who DOESN'T want the picture…lol I feel so unmemorable….
Seriously though…anyone who got a call back last week do their CC with Paul? I'm just curious how long it took to hear back from his….if any
BLDivah–I hear ya! Do you remember Paul's last name? I thought would send my video in to his attention, but I don't remember his last name.
hohohogreengiant: did you get an email????
lilacdaisey – I think Paul's last name is Gordon.
Back from Louisville–Thanks!
Okay my thought here.
First – Thank you DJ for taking out time and setting it straight – Thank you to Holland and any other CD that have been helping us all in this crazy process! Also thanks to Matt and Dr Jen, Pete and well everyone here! If it wasn't for everyone we all would be a mess! So again, Thank You!!
Okay this has been a crazy, exciting, memorable journey for all of us here. I want this opportunity to be on the BL just like the next person but it's not the end of my life if I do not get chosen. I have done my best to 'sell' myself including submitting 3 yucky videos (mind you – they were bad) …lol..sorry to those CD's that had to sit and watch that..lol to attending a CC in Chicago and going to Columbus on Sat. I do,however, leave with the satisfaction that I did my best and have met/interact with/emailed/help/and learned from some AMAZING PEOPLE!
My question to you all is: What are you going to do with your life Post BL casting? Will you waste another moment of breath? Will you allow this weight issue take over who you really are? Or sit and watch and cry b/c you want to be that person on the show that loses? (Watch and cheer, but do not dwell on 'I'm chubby – I've been there and have done that while eating my cheetos 🙁 )
Applied Again – Does it make a difference if I take I-95 of the Turnpike?
Iwanttobealoser :
I will be going to CC in Columbus. I live 4 – 5 hours away. Do you have a pass or will you be a like trooper?
lilacdaisy: Yeah I thought of doing the same thing…making it to his attention since Holland gave that little tip….all the good it might do…he didn't even want our pictures…Maybe we should consider making it to Rita's attention…hmmmm
Oops…I meant * line trooper….
LoL…i think some of us should meet in Orlando and carpool to the Miami CC! HaHa! I want to go so bad, but I just know I will get lost down there, and I have no clue what the best time to get there is lol! I don't think I have ever wanted anything so badly. I have been going to the gym daily, and coming home and watching BL re-runs, and I SO look forward to Tuesday nights, lol! Who else is excited about tomorrow night?!?!?
Anyway thank you DJ and Holland and Matt and Tad and everybody who makes this thread go round' and helps all of us hopeful's sleep at night! LoL I start my video making process tomorrow- and am just going to do my thing, and be real and be Sara Kay! I wish you all luck, and thanks again to you all! If you want to car-pool…lol e-mail me at justbeingmommy@yahoo.com =)
I'm off to bed to sit there awake for 5 hours to think about what I don't want to forget in my video, haha!
<3 Sara K. Mundy
any news from dallas?
Sara Kay Kay! You HAVE to go to a CC. You are adorable and every message you've left here has been positive and a joy to read. I think you NEED to go to a CC and meet a CD and be seen.
Good luck Girl!
Yeah, ANY news from Dallas? Please speak up if you have had any callbacks.
WHAT NUMBERS WERE PEOPLE AT THE DALLAS CC? I WAS #147
For the Columbus CC, is there a train station or bus stop near the venue?? I was thinking IF I can't drive there and depending on how much tickets are and IF I can afford it (since Im not working), maybe I'll go by train or bus. Any advice in that situation??? Like I feel bad, I want to go to a casting call and Ohio may be my last hope of that.
Thank you so much LeLe! It's people like you that make me want to do this more and more! I am so tired of the "we'll if you don't make it" line…I WILL make it, and so will all of you others who don't back down, and put all you have in this. This show changes lives, and I want to be a part of the change.
As you see I didn't go to bed- Im too nervous about what to do with my video- then again, I think I might just turn the camera on, and go with it like I said before, they want real and raw, and thats what I'm all about =D
Thanks to you all who have e-mailed me with your positive notes, you all are amazing, and I hope to see some of you on the ranch =)
Positive thinking is the only way to think in my opinion.
<3 Sara Mundy
I just want to second the thank you's to the CD's that have taken the time to stop in and post. You guys have been so generous and please know how much it is appreciated!
I love this page. I am so excited. Even if I don't make it, I think this whole experience is moving me in the right direction. I think I'm seeing all the potential I have. This show is great. I cry every week….. I need this inspiration.
Thanks to all of you who have shared your stories and made me feel a little less alone in the world.
I have never heard of casting directors who give so much helpful hints. It's really amazing.
Thanks for reading. I honestly wish everyone goodluck…. try not to show me up too much.
Hey all, hope everyone is holding up OK, the next few months are going to be painful – I have full-on BL fever, and I can’t wait until tomorrow night to get a new fix of the show!
I finally have a video done, but like many people I feel like I can do better, so I am thinking of shooting more and more stuff. I’ve never taken so many photos or video of me ever. In a way it’s making me feel better about myself!
I am hoping for some good BL video karma, so here are a few things that I found that really helped me out with my video, that I want to share with everyone on the board!
First, to type on your pdf application w/o screwing it up, there is a free trial download called FoxIt PDF Reader that has a text tool: http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/rd_intro.php
I also found a free trial for Sony Vegas Movie Studio, that is great to use for editing, and exporting to mpegs: http://www.sonycreativesoftware.com/moviestudio
I am so glad I could try them before buying them … rather going down to Best Buy and coming back with some crap software that I can’t work! Both programs are really easy to use, and I didn’t even have to look up instructions to get them going.
I am definitely going to buy/keep both of these when the 30 days is up!!!
Hope this helps – See you at the ranch! =D
LG
I will be at the Phoenix CC on Saturday, cousins! I am going with a good friend of mine, and we are super stoked! I honestly can't wait. The weather here is fantastic right now.
I was number #31 in Nashville.
Well, I never recieved an email back from my taped intereview so work on the 10 minute video has begun. Wish me luck! lol
