Biggest Loser Casting Tips (season 8, page 2)

COMMENTING IS CLOSED! THIS POST GOT TOO BIG! YOU CAN CONTINUE THE CONVERSATION ON THE BIGGEST LOSER CASTING TIPS (SEASON 8, PAGE 3) BLOG POST!

Okay, casting is well on it’s way for season eight of Biggest Loser.  I’m reposting this entry to enable people to continue the conversation started here.  There’s over a couple thousand comments worth of ideas, notes, and other information, including casting directors, and former contestants (other than myself), so if you have some time it’s worth exploring.  Here are the vital links:

  • NBC has posted casting information and the application here.
  • Pete Thomas, the season 2 $100,000 winner has some of the best casting call advice out there, which you can find at www.WinningMan.com.
  • Jen Kerns, a season three contestant like myself, and a doctor for the show for seasons four and five, has also put together some fantastic casting advice that you can read here.
  • My original casting tips post with over a thousand comments worth of discussion, click here.  Stacy, Adam, Phil, Amy and Coleen were all reading and posting in the discussion there – it’s fun to look back and realize they were some of the superstars of season six!
  • My second post (fairly identical to this one), with well over two thousand comments worth of discussion, click here.
  • If you’re dealing with disappointment about not being cast, then check out my post on Biggest Loser casting disappointment.

One of the questions I hear a lot is about money … how do contestants afford to be away from home and work for months at a time?  I don’t know what it is now, but when I was a contestant there was a $500 a week stipend for cast members on the ranch.  When you received the check you could cash it and spend it, send it home, save it, whatever.  All airplane tickets, hotel accommodations, etc., for the contestants and potential cast members are taken care of by NBC, and during the casting process it self there was a $50 per diem to cover food costs.

Another question is timing; typically a season lasts for about 8-9 months.  About four of this is spent in filming; if you last all the way until the final three or four, you could be away from home for as much as four months or so.  Once the ranch filming wraps and the last few contestants are sent home, however, there is still another four or five months that all the contestants have to continue losing weight until the finale.  In addition, potential cast members are flown out to California a couple weeks before filming begins for the final round of casting, medical checkups, psychological evals, etc.  NBC brings out more people than what they need and the cast is not finalized until filming literally begins.  People have been cut at the last minute and replacements flown in with hardly any time to spare.  Nothing is in stone until it’s on camera!

When will you hear from Biggest Loser about your video?  There is no way of knowing.  I heard back a few weeks after I sent it in, but even after that it’s a big waiting game.  If you get a phone number or email from a casting direction, definitely drop them a line/call every couple weeks to find out if you’re still in the running or what’s going on.  Schedules and plans change almost every day, so it’s easy to get lost in the shuffle.  If you don’t hear back within a month I would think your video didn’t make the cut.  That doesn’t mean you can’t send in another or visit a casting call – it’s just up to you!

Finally, here’s my video application tips!  This is by no means a recipe for success; it’s based on my video application and the conversations I had with casting directors out in LA in between things.  I was pretty curious about the whole process so I was pumping them for info even after filming began.  I’m such a nerd!

  • They’ve usually decided if they’re interested in you within the first 30-60 seconds of your video, so front load it with your best stuff.  Make it interesting!  Start off with something funny or exciting!
  • Keep in mind, if you’re going to be cast, your video is going to be watched hundreds of times by producers, executives, casting directors, etc.  If it bores you or your friends the second or third time watching it … put some more time into it!
  • Special effects?  Don’t bother!  We’ve all got video editing software with all sorts of bells and whistles on our home computers, but fancy transitions are not going to sell you to people who do video editing for a living.  In fact, it can distract from who you are.  I’m a video editing nerd and I didn’t use any special effects other than putting my name and contact info on as a subtitle at the beginning.
  • Don’t bother talking about why you need to lose weight.  When I first started filming my audition video I started describing all of my health reasons for losing weight – but when I was watching it back, I realized … they don’t need to hear it!  One look at me was all they needed to know I needed to lose weight!  Show them why you need to lose it; I said I needed to lose weight for my kids, and then I followed it with a minute or two of the best footage I could find of me with wrestling with my three boys.  We probably filmed half an hour of that insanity and I grabbed the cutest, loudest, and funniest few moments for the audition video.  Your physical need to lose weight is not nearly as interesting as who or what your losing the weight for.
  • Live loud!  Reality TV is over the top, dramatic, and filled with loud personalities.  They need to see that on your video!  I wanted them to know that even though  I was morbidly obese I was up to the challenge of the crazy competitions and workouts – so I threw on a bunch of clips from my different youth group activities; me getting slimed, snowtubing, playing paintball, screaming at events, being on stage, running around … you get the idea.  Other contestants did things appropriate to their lives; Tim from Oregon had himself spinning out on his Harley, Tim from Delaware recruited his elementary school class to do things with him, Heather Hanson filmed herself running around in a sports bra all day doing her household chores and errands.  The less talking and more action you can have, the better (in my opinion)!
  • If you have footage or photos of yourself thin, include those at some point on the video.  If you can show them what your after will be, then do it!

Remember, enjoy the conversation here and know that I will never compromise your anonymity – not to NBC, 3Ball, Casting Directors or anyone.  You can post anonymously, or you can leave your names and contact information … just remember that NBC likes to be the one announcing their cast for the show, so if you start identifying yourself publicly as a finalist, you’ll probably find yourself eliminated from the casting process.  Good luck to everyone … and let me know if you make the show!  Pete Thomas has more contestants on season seven than I did and I’m bitter!  😉

  1. I finished my video lastnight, and I've had so much FUN making it, but it has been depressing watching it and seeing how my weight has truly affected me. I see myself in the mirror everyday, but to watch myself on camera, I look like a big fat cow! LOL Even if I don't make it on the show, it's TIME to do something about this weight!! I think everyone should make a video, it will truly open your eyes.

tazkewldude- were you at a table with all VIPs ?

  3. Thank you DJ for the encouragement and the tips!

  4. No I was not – there were 3 VIPS at my table and the other 7 had been waiting in line since early that morning. I was in the 3rd group to go in…

  5. any updates from dallas? 🙂

  6. JAYBABY: I had to laugh at your comment about the lady trying to steal your thunder. My buddy auditioned in Dallas. He said that everyone was smiling and chatting it up UNTIL the CD showed up. When the CD told them they were going to introduce themselves one at a time, everyone except for him went from happy go lucky to full blown balling in 2 seconds.
So how does one know if Ian likes them?

    HarleyKat,
I'm still curious on what time to arrive. How can you look and feel your best when you've been sitting around for several hours? I am hoping the VIPs we have make a difference in the wait time, but doesn't rob me of meeting the wonderful people in line.
I've heard that VIPs have had to wait several hours too, and then at other places they almost walk right in.
    Whatever happens, I'm EXCITED!!

we got there at 10 and went in with 8 other VIPs, our whole table was VIPs, i think that was probably a mistake

  9. I arrived in Nashville at 7:45 but did not stand in line – around 8:35 they let a few people in and those of use that had VIP passes were also let in. I was in the 3rd group to see the cd's and we actually went back at 9:59 (meaning they started early). It was a very quick process. 😀

  10. McFatty- I could tell because he looked really bored with certain people. Kind of ike he was thinking yeah, unh uh, okay are you done yet! LOL! Others he seemed more engaged, more eye contact, smiles and even a few extra questions. I had no idea the cd would be so fun and down to earth!

  11. Jay Baby – who was your cd?

  12. fluffychick:
I can't tell you where my CC was, I'm sorry nor can I say who my casting people were. I've been sworn to secrecy. hehehee Definately dont want to ruin my chances!

  13. budakay1- Ian was my CD! He's GREAT!

annenoni- are you serious? You've already been sworn to secrecy based off of a casting call? I guess there is a 1st time for everything! Interesting.

  14. Jay Baby – you took the words right out of my mouth…lol…
    😉

  15. fluffychick- They say everyones experience is different, I guess they are telling the truth. fluffychick have you been to a casting call yet?

  16. Jay Baby – I guess but, they also say don't believe everything you read on these blogs. 😉
Not yet, I'm going this weekend. I'm so excited. I'm going to the Columbus one.

  17. I'm saying that because I'm past the CC, past the one on one, and now onto the next step, so yes, I would be ruining my chances if I started blabbing about who my CD was, where the CC was – depending on the # of people they chose from my CC city to move on this far, it could be revealing.

  18. Plus, the CD's told us not to reveal anything – don't tell people what they ask, all questions are different for everyone, they way the CD's choose to do their callbacks, emails, etc., and they said don't tell people who you are and how far you've gotten because your chance for being on the show could be ruined.

I was answering a question from someone who asked me where my CC was, so I responded with a cute comment saying I was "sworn to secrecy". I had no idea that some of you would take what I said the wrong way.

  19. Jay Baby — YEAH RIGHT I'm pretty sure annenoni hasn't been "sworn to secrecy".

A lot of people come on here wanting all of your information so that they can get a "leg up" on you and in the end, don't return the favor of answering people's questions .

  20. annenoni- I see what you are saying, that's understandable. Congrats on your success thus far! When you make it to the ranch and get on camera be sure to give me a shout out! You know like the football players usually say "Hi MOM"! you can say Hi Jay Baby hope your kicking butt on the tredmill at home!!!!! ;o)

fluffychick- I'm excited for you! I'm sure you'll have a great experience! Are you auditioning alone or with a partner?

  21. There are thousands of people going to these casting calls, saying which one you went to isn't going to blow your chances.

OR better yet, saying who your casting directors were isn't going to blow your chances either especially since they travel around to multiple cities ……….

I get the idea from what DJ says. There will be no question if you are continuing in the process. That makes sense, they are probably just as interested in making sure they keep in touch with promising contestants than we would be as those potential contestants. Their job (and probably lending to their job security) is to find the best candidates and present them for consideration. If they find people they really like and think would be great, they will probably become those people's biggest fan! I doubt they would do anything that could let someone slip through the crack, or leave someone hanging that they really want. I'm sure they know that people have lives and can't just get a call one day after weeks of hearing nothing to head to LA. I'm sure if you are close to making it, you will know.

Having said that, I am an over-analyzer just like so many others on here. The fact that we're on here, lol, says a lot. I'm really trying to just relax and not get to stressed about my upcoming casting call. Like one of the cd's said in an interiew, they will know within the 30 seconds we talk if they could see us on the show, or if people would be interested in watching us. If they don't think that about me, there is no amount of worrying, stressing, emailing, begging, etc that will change it. Period. It would be time to move on and take all my reasons for wanting this in the first place and put them into action on my own. If my true motivation for going on BL is to get this weight off, then it should be my priority with or without the show. I'm sure there are people that just want to be on tv, or get the money, or what the BL can do for them in life, but those of us that really want to get the weight off, if we don't make the show, we have to do it on our own…

  23. annenoni- I'm not taking it the wrong way I was just surprised. i think some people may feel like you are on here to get information from others but are not willing to help others out with the info you know. I'm not worried about it. Though this site has helped me a great deal in the end I know my chances of being on the show don't rely on the casting tips but on the Divine favor and will of my savior Jesus Christ. I've completed my casting and I'm here to meet people and encourage others that haven't been to their casting calls yet. I'm not here to pass judgement on anyone. If you don't feel comfortable sharing your information by all means don't. I'm not sure I would log on here telling people that you made it so far but not be willing to help them out, kind seems as if you are bragging. That's just me though! As I said before I wish you the best of luck! Go get em tiger!

  24. Yeah Right: I'm sorry you don't believe me. Just like everyone on this board, I certainly don't wish to get a "leg up" on anyone. I'm here to make friends, share tips, but at the same time, not compromise my identity. I'm sure you can understand that. And, either way you look at it – I did just give you some tips as well. Information straight from the CD's mouth, so hopefully we can all take that into consideration.

  25. Jay Baby – I opted to do it by myself. I'm looking forward to the experience. From what I have read it seems like a quite unique experience. If I make it great, if not I can say I tried.

Yeah right – I just am laughing because if a person didn't want to share info, why get on the blog and say how far you have made it. It's like eating a big mac in front of someone with their jaw wired shut. lol

  26. Jay Baby: I understand what you're saying – I hope you read my post above to Yeah Right. There have been some who have come on to say they are moving on, there have been many who have not. I've come forward to say I've moved on, but that doesn't mean I'm bragging – it's just answering the inquiring posters who wanted to know if anyone has gotten that far. I hope YOU get that far, I hope EVERYONE on this board gets a callback – so we can encourage one another in the process. 🙂

  27. blah blah blah

  28. Annenoni – Congrats!! Hope you make it all the way. Can I have a shout out also…you can do a mass shoutout to all your fellow bloggers…lol

  29. fluffychick: I hope you get the chance to get a taste of that big mac. Good luck at your CC!

  30. If I even make it on the show, that would be a dream come true…I would definately say a shoutout. I'm crossing my fingers and yes, I will let you know if I get the call for sequester!

  31. Fluffy Chick — I agree. OH SNAP

  32. Annenoni – just curious, without revealing too much info, was this your first time auditioning either for BL or in general?

  33. TMI TMI TMI TMI the casting directors do know that stuff fluffy

  34. Yeah right – I don't recall seeing you on the blog before. Have u gone to your cc yet?

  35. Yeah right – you are making me laugh so hard!

Fluffychick- What is going on with people trying to steal my thunder? Didn't you read above the crying lady tried to steal my sunshine at the cc and now I've recruited a BL contestant to give me a shout out on national tv and you come stealing my shout out! You biggest losers are something else I tell you! heeee heeeeeee ;O)

annenoni- if you get a call to the sequester I think you should run as far away from this board as possible. That's when the real confidentiality comes in (according to previous posters). Don't risk your chances, if you've made it to that point then there is no more advice to be given because the choices will have been made by then.

Don't forget my shout out…..I want it personalized to Jay Baby and you can shout out to fluffy chick the next day. Sorry fluffy I'm greedy! ;o)

  36. I'm not auditioning this go-around, there is no way I could get off of work and it is not worth it to jeopardize my job in this economy. I am lucky to have a job.

It would be so heartbreaking to actually be moving along in this process only to have to pick between job and the ranch. I know which I'd LIKE to pick but I know what I'd have to pick for my family's sake.

  37. Yes, it was my 1st time auditioning, it is so much fun. At my CC there were so many nice people, lots of laughing, dancing, and acting up. There was nothing else to do but wait!

  38. Jay Baby – you are too funny…sorry about stealing the thunder…if I make it to the rannch I will give you a daily shoutout and personalize it each time. And yes I read your crying lady story, it had me in stiches laughing. :-p

  39. Jay Baby: thanks for the heads up!! I guess if you don't hear from me after April, then you'll know! I'm just praying for God's will and if He wants me to be on the ranch it will happen and if not, then I will be dedicated to losing this weight either way.

  40. yeah right: i'm worried about my job too, especially in this economy where jobs are hard to come by right now. Just knowing there is a stipend definately helps because the money could be sent home to help pay the bills. It would be a difficult decision though for sure!

  41. You guys are great! You are going to make Jay Baby famous, even though no one will ever know who I really am! LOL! annenoni and fluffy you'll have to send me the address to the ranch and I'll have tee shirts made for you that say JAY BABY for president! I'll order them in every size so you can have one as you drop dress sizes.

Now Now Now annenoni one minute you trust God to get you to the ranch and the next minute you are worried about your job. If it's his will that you are on the ranch don't you think He's already got your job covered? All things work together for the good of them who love the Lord! Try to stop worrying and enjoy the ride along the way!!

Oh and Fluffy, you are forgiven!

  42. You're so right Jay Baby! I should trust Him with everything in my life. Sometimes I have a hard time "letting go and letting GOD!"

  43. Annenoni- Me too!

  44. If I get on the ranch, T-shirts will eventually be banned from my wardrobe. I wear T-shirts every to work because I can, I mean it's the only thing long enough to cover my big butt and pooching belly!! 🙂

Ok…so I wasn't going to post, but I think that you all are just so incredibly supportive and understanding that I feel as if someone may be able to relate to my feelings the past 4 days. After the CC, I was actually feeling pretty good. I did well in terms of getting my "time" and I was able to talk a lot (PS I was at a "just throw out your ideas" table…oh, the screaming!). However, as the time dragged on and I realized that I was not getting a CB, I began to get upset. Not angry upset…more of a "depressed" upset. I have a serious Type A personality and I hate to lose or fail. So, I had a hard time getting over what I felt was like a failure last Saturday.

However, my husband (who is super-supportive, thinks I would do great on the show, but doesn't think I really have that much to lose – I told him he's blinded with love or something!) said that I should get started on making a kick-a** video. It's been hard to get the energy up to really want to do the video b/c I feel like it would just be another waste/failure. I had some great ideas, but have just been feeling a little down lately. Also, although my motivation for wanting to be on the show is definitely to lose weight, I am also the type of person that would do better focusing on just weight loss, as if it's my job. I have so many distractions in my house and my life here that getting to focus on myself and only myself for once would truly be like a G-dsend. I'm sure my feelings are similar to others!

So, I have been moping around for the days. Then, I woke up this morning and decided that I was just wallowing in my own self-pity and it was time to just get over that. So, now I am brainstorming video ideas and going to work hard core on that part of the process.

So, my questions? I am not so sure about sending my video directly to the CD's attention. Also, I'm wondering if I should go to another CC this weekend for another shot at the CDs first. Any thoughts would be appreciated!!

  46. Last season I was here every day under a different name.. but i cant remember what I used… lol. Really. Anyways, I just sent in a video last time.. and didnt hear anything, but it was late in the process.

This time I went to the Dallas CC. So I just decided to come back and see what peeps had to say. I was not going to post anything. BUT I just had to say… Holland and DJ THANK YOU! That was a great to have a post from y'all. My sister and I got there about 8:15am… no VIP so we were outside in the COLD till about 1pm… once inside we were able to thaw out. Finally, got to the CD about 4:20. Got to sit at Holland's table. I met some great people. Though I wanted to take a trumpet and…. well, I wont say, but if you were there with the trumpter you know!

I am going to be sending in a video this week…. i really want this, but I promised myself NOT to get as wrapped up into the waiting as I did last time.

PS – sorry for the long post!! 🙂

  48. I believe it is in the cards and my Goddess has a path for me. If I meant to be on the ranch then she will let me know.

  49. Gotta get back to work! This site is so dang addicting…I have to tear myself away until this evening. Tata for now my friends!

  50. LoL, you guys are my favorite…heck I wouldn't mind dropping T-Shirt sizes at this point, haha! Congrats Annenoni on making it this far, I'll keep my fingers crossed for you making it to Season 8!
Jay Baby, you are too funny btw- you definitely have the personality. Did you guys have parners or are you auditioning as individuals? (that is if you don't mind answering =P)
Anyway now that im addicted to this thread I check it as much as myspace. HaHa!
Hope all is well with all of you! I know I am so sleep deprived & nervous about how my video will turn out and if I can make it to Miami, LoL!
    Good Luck again Annenoni!
