COMMENTING IS CLOSED! THIS POST GOT TOO BIG! YOU CAN CONTINUE THE CONVERSATION ON THE BIGGEST LOSER CASTING TIPS (SEASON 8, PAGE 3) BLOG POST!

Okay, casting is well on it’s way for season eight of Biggest Loser. I’m reposting this entry to enable people to continue the conversation started here. There’s over a couple thousand comments worth of ideas, notes, and other information, including casting directors, and former contestants (other than myself), so if you have some time it’s worth exploring. Here are the vital links:
- NBC has posted casting information and the application here.
- Pete Thomas, the season 2 $100,000 winner has some of the best casting call advice out there, which you can find at www.WinningMan.com.
- Jen Kerns, a season three contestant like myself, and a doctor for the show for seasons four and five, has also put together some fantastic casting advice that you can read here.
- My original casting tips post with over a thousand comments worth of discussion, click here. Stacy, Adam, Phil, Amy and Coleen were all reading and posting in the discussion there – it’s fun to look back and realize they were some of the superstars of season six!
- My second post (fairly identical to this one), with well over two thousand comments worth of discussion, click here.
- If you’re dealing with disappointment about not being cast, then check out my post on Biggest Loser casting disappointment.
One of the questions I hear a lot is about money … how do contestants afford to be away from home and work for months at a time? I don’t know what it is now, but when I was a contestant there was a $500 a week stipend for cast members on the ranch. When you received the check you could cash it and spend it, send it home, save it, whatever. All airplane tickets, hotel accommodations, etc., for the contestants and potential cast members are taken care of by NBC, and during the casting process it self there was a $50 per diem to cover food costs.
Another question is timing; typically a season lasts for about 8-9 months. About four of this is spent in filming; if you last all the way until the final three or four, you could be away from home for as much as four months or so. Once the ranch filming wraps and the last few contestants are sent home, however, there is still another four or five months that all the contestants have to continue losing weight until the finale. In addition, potential cast members are flown out to California a couple weeks before filming begins for the final round of casting, medical checkups, psychological evals, etc. NBC brings out more people than what they need and the cast is not finalized until filming literally begins. People have been cut at the last minute and replacements flown in with hardly any time to spare. Nothing is in stone until it’s on camera!
When will you hear from Biggest Loser about your video? There is no way of knowing. I heard back a few weeks after I sent it in, but even after that it’s a big waiting game. If you get a phone number or email from a casting direction, definitely drop them a line/call every couple weeks to find out if you’re still in the running or what’s going on. Schedules and plans change almost every day, so it’s easy to get lost in the shuffle. If you don’t hear back within a month I would think your video didn’t make the cut. That doesn’t mean you can’t send in another or visit a casting call – it’s just up to you!
Finally, here’s my video application tips! This is by no means a recipe for success; it’s based on my video application and the conversations I had with casting directors out in LA in between things. I was pretty curious about the whole process so I was pumping them for info even after filming began. I’m such a nerd!
-
They’ve usually decided if they’re interested in you within the first 30-60 seconds of your video, so front load it with your best stuff. Make it interesting! Start off with something funny or exciting!
-
Keep in mind, if you’re going to be cast, your video is going to be watched hundreds of times by producers, executives, casting directors, etc. If it bores you or your friends the second or third time watching it … put some more time into it!
-
Special effects? Don’t bother! We’ve all got video editing software with all sorts of bells and whistles on our home computers, but fancy transitions are not going to sell you to people who do video editing for a living. In fact, it can distract from who you are. I’m a video editing nerd and I didn’t use any special effects other than putting my name and contact info on as a subtitle at the beginning.
-
Don’t bother talking about why you need to lose weight. When I first started filming my audition video I started describing all of my health reasons for losing weight – but when I was watching it back, I realized … they don’t need to hear it! One look at me was all they needed to know I needed to lose weight! Show them why you need to lose it; I said I needed to lose weight for my kids, and then I followed it with a minute or two of the best footage I could find of me with wrestling with my three boys. We probably filmed half an hour of that insanity and I grabbed the cutest, loudest, and funniest few moments for the audition video. Your physical need to lose weight is not nearly as interesting as who or what your losing the weight for.
-
Live loud! Reality TV is over the top, dramatic, and filled with loud personalities. They need to see that on your video! I wanted them to know that even though I was morbidly obese I was up to the challenge of the crazy competitions and workouts – so I threw on a bunch of clips from my different youth group activities; me getting slimed, snowtubing, playing paintball, screaming at events, being on stage, running around … you get the idea. Other contestants did things appropriate to their lives; Tim from Oregon had himself spinning out on his Harley, Tim from Delaware recruited his elementary school class to do things with him, Heather Hanson filmed herself running around in a sports bra all day doing her household chores and errands. The less talking and more action you can have, the better (in my opinion)!
-
If you have footage or photos of yourself thin, include those at some point on the video. If you can show them what your after will be, then do it!
Remember, enjoy the conversation here and know that I will never compromise your anonymity – not to NBC, 3Ball, Casting Directors or anyone. You can post anonymously, or you can leave your names and contact information … just remember that NBC likes to be the one announcing their cast for the show, so if you start identifying yourself publicly as a finalist, you’ll probably find yourself eliminated from the casting process. Good luck to everyone … and let me know if you make the show! Pete Thomas has more contestants on season seven than I did and I’m bitter! 😉

I still can not believe that no one from the Dallas casting call as posted that they received a call back.
Too weird.
From Confusion to Wallowing- Glad to hear you are feeling better today! When life doesn't go as planned it's okay to cry as long as we get in the boat and paddle ourselves out of the puddle of tears rather than drowning in them. Why not go for it? If your budget allows for you to attend another casting call what will it hurt to go and try again! I think you should do it. Take Holland's advice and send the tape to the CD.
Sara Kay Kay- I tried out with a wonderful partner. She ROCKED her 30 seconds at the table!
I agree with Jay Baby- Confusion to Wallowing I would definitely attend another casting call if you are able, and send in your tape to the CD you worked with. Like Jay Baby said, what can it hurt. Don't sell yourself short, everything happens for a reason, if you haven't gotten a call back yet keep giving it your all and do your best, and just be yourself. Don't let this or anything for that matter get you down, there is always an upside, and god will put you where he wants you, thats the truth! Oh, and I SO agree with you on the whole wanting to focus on weight loss as my job, and wanting to get away and just focus on me for a change. That truly would be worth it.
If you want to chat e-mail me, I posted my e-mail a few posts up ^^ =)
Jay Baby- Thanks for being supportive to the fellow hopefuls, you rock! and that's cool you have an awesome partner and you two rocked it' Im applying single, I could have a partner, but im hoping for a singles show, just for the whole Joelle and Carla outcome…I'd rather do it alone…
Keep it up guys… =) Everybody on here is so positive and helpful…it's just nice to get on here and see such positive people.
Oh, and what 6 more hours until the next Episode??…I am SO excited! Who's with me?
Sara Kay Kay- I agree I love the posivity on this board! Thank you for you encouraging words as well!
btw- I said my partner rocked it not me. ;o) I'm fine with that though I know I did my best.
Jay Baby, did your partner get a call back?
From Confusion to wallowing- I feel some of the feelings that you have. I went to the CC in Charlotte and I really was expecting a callback. I never thought that I would not get one. I did great, looked great, and Rita remembered me. I thought is was perfect..lol. I want to win at everything and this was one of those things. Instead of feeling down I started thinking of ideas for a video and went to the gym/tanning today. I need to lose weight either on the show or at home. If they can do it so can I…it just might take longer. I was also thinking about going to another CC but the closest one it about 8-9 hours away. Good Luck to you and everyone else!!!!
Le Le- My partner didn't get a call back but she is a winner in my eyes! Don't get me wrong it was a long 5 hour ride back home but she has dusted herself off and began dieting and going to the gym! She is such an inspiration.
Question for you guys and gals. Do you think there is any advantage/disadvantage in being at the 1st week of cc's? It's kind of like the glass half empty half full thing. I wondered if it would be eaiser to be seen 1st and have a CD love you that way everyone else following you are competing with you. Or is it better to go last so that they have seen all of the competition prior to meeting you and you are the last to be able to give a memorable impression giving you a chance to kick the previous hopefuls out of the competition.
This may be a dumb question but I love thinking about things like this.
I am glad to see you all are taking the no call backs thing so well.
I auditioned last year and got a call back, made 2 videos, filled out paperwork etc etc etc so when I auditioned this year I really wasn't worried about not getting a call back.
I tell myself that I am over it and I really thought I was..I mean I've stopped really thinking about it and dwelling on it but like today…I didn't get picked for something I thought I would and I was thinking "gosh, I didn't get picked for BL nor this, I'm really not worthy"
suck suck suck I hate doing this to myself!
Jay Baby – That is an excellent question! And now, I think that it's kind of like when someone is trying out for a team sport or a spot in a band or something like that. In the beginning, you have no comparison…so you think – yeah that is great! But as the weeks/tryouts go on, you compare everyone to those first "greats" you saw. So, I think going first at something like this is a good thing b/c it allows you to get through that first round and get to the one on one without comparisons other than those that were at the beginning stages with you. Just my 2 cents.
Excited – thanks for the words. It's nice to know that someone else out there feels the same way regarding not getting a call back after doing really well (at least in their minds!! lol) I am going to work on the video… I thought of going to Columbus, but I just don't feel like doing the drive again like I did last weekend (plus, I don't want my hubby to have to handle the kids alone again so soon…and flights are slightly expensive for such a "slim chance." The 16 hour roundtrip last weekend just about killed me…I'm still recovering from the exhaustion. Good luck with your video!!
AnxiousTX – I think that was ultimately how I am feeling. It's like … how many times can I not get what I want. Aren't the odds in my favor at some point??? I just watched the Oprah from yesterday about living a simple life and I have to say – I so admire the woman who chucked everything to move to a cabin in the country!!! It makes me think that I should stop worrying so much about the things that don't matter and focus more on myself so that I can ultimately focus on my family when I am healthier and happier than I am right now.
Anxious TX – The fact that you made it as far as you did doesn't count for anything in your eyes? Some people didn't make it past a 30 second breifing of their story or a 7 min screaming match. Obviously you are someone that they were interested in. Maybe your story just didn't fit the plot for that season. It scares me when we start thinking that we are not worthy as a people due to a tv show not selecting us. Your worth isn't based upon your acceptance on a 12 week television show. Your worth is based in the content of your character. I'm sure that you are a wonderful person it's just the timing for this situation isn't matching up with your desires right now. Do you desire to be on t.v. or do you desire to lose weight and be healthy? If the 2nd answer is your choice then by all means you are definetly worthy of that. So let's get up and get to working on it! What ever it takes you ARE worth it!
From Confusion to Wallowing – To play the devil's advocate, if you get a callback from a later casting call, after they've seen thousands of people and done many one-on-one interviews, I would consider those people to be really strong contenders. Despite all the great people they've seen, the cd's still want to see more of them…I think that says a lot…
Though, I'm guessing there really is no better or worse, just what they are looking for, or not what they are looking for. Everyone's story is important to them, it's up to the cd to decide who America wants to see….
headingtotheranch – totally agree with your devil's advocate position. I only meant that I would think that in the beginning, it would be easier to be picked as they haven't seen others to compare everyone. I totally agree that being picked late in the process would probably be a definite plus as they are saying that they like you…and they've seen thousands of people by that time!
After the Cb when do they ask for bio or send in a tape. if they do not ask you for that during the one on one is that a good thing ? They did however show alot of intrest and tell me the process about when they will be call me back
WOW really my interview went so well myself and the cd talked about alot of things even in his personal life they did take my photos and i had the long application as well . So they should have asked for a tape and more pics to send in?
Hey guys…just reading the blogs today and it's all a little overwhelming I guess. The thing we all must remember and remind ourselves is that God is ultimately in control. Your destiny isn't tied to what Holland, Ian or any other casting director says. You not being called back or getting a call back is up to God. There is a PEACE in knowing that your steps have been ordered. So I just trust in Him knowing that if I go one step further it's because the Lord allowed it and if I don't, then it's because God has something different instore. It's so much easier to believe what God says about me, then what the CD's say about me. The CD's are great and their encouragement and belief in us is so much fun to hear but regardless if you get chosen, don't let your worth be found in that. You are awesome. Every single person on this site are very special people and we are all wanting the same thing and not many slots to be put all in. But just rest in Him knowing He's all knowing and all seeing and He won't withold ANY good thing from you.
Hey everyone. THis is my first time on the website and found it very interesting and it gives alot of usefull information. I went to the Michigan open casting calls on sat. This was my second. I did not however get a call back. And need to say that I still am disappointed. Anyone can tell me that there are thousands of people trying out and I know that but still my heart doesn't fell happy. I know we only spoke briefly but I am a good judge of character and I believe he is a great person in normal life. BUT TAD IF YOUR LISTENING I AM WAITING STILL!!!!!!
We talked a lot with Shellay form last season, she looks GOOOOOD! She gave us some information about the ranch that was really cool. I saw pete again this year and he still looks the same. Good!! I had a very positive experience this year. Last year I was with a group of five loud men and couldn't be heard. That was really dissapointing. Go guys need to check out pets's website … winningman.com he has a lot of usefull information. Good luck to everyone on there upcoming casting calls and videos.

Toblessed2Bstressed – oh wow, I guess I won't be a BLer because I am atheist. But I do believe in casting directors and executive producers. I didn't see on the application where you had to pronounce your religion, was that a qualification? The real truth is that our fate is in the hands of the executive producers.
Overly – that's just crazy
Clt – I think you still have a good chance. The process is different for everyone.
Clt – did he/she say you were going to be pitched or they will contact you or anything?
If that is how u choose to have hope then I'm happy for you! This isn't about religion at all. I just see a lot of people here confused, upset and worrying and I hate that. I just choose to have peace! I wish u the best of luck though!!!
Overly overwieght- please don't try to start a debate over religion. We all have our own beliefs and we should be adult enough to respect that. No one ever said that you wil or will not make it based on your beliefs so please don't put words in others mouths. We are here for support, information and encouragment. If you believe your fate is in the hands of the producers good for you, what ever works for you. The people that get on the show will become role models for America and America is diversity, so if you can't handle diversity you may want to reconsider your decision to apply for this show.
I don't know about you guys but this was a little heavy for me, can we lighten the mood back up….pweeeez! ;o)
EXCITED–I'm in the same boat as you. I have contemplated going to another CC this weekend, but the closest one is 8-9 hours away. I don't want to go if I get the same results as last weekend's CC, but I want to go if it could mean I get a CB. Maybe I should go to another CC AND work on my video. Decisons, decisions…
Jay Baby – I'm curious about your CC…. where people dressed crazy/gimicky? Where there any people that totally stood out to you as people you'd like to see on the show? Where there people at the other end of the spectrum that didn't 'look' like they stood a chance?
yeah! Thanks Jay Baby! That got a little to deep for me! I am just choosing to rest and not worry..maybe that's all I should have put! 🙂
Wow… *Were* and *were* and *Were*. Back to 3rd grade English class for me!
If anyone wants a really good laugh – you all have to check out the BL outtakes on you tube…funny funny and it lightens up the stress of waiting
LeLe- I didn't see anyone dressed crazy/gimicky. They all looked like regular midwest country people. ;o) The only person that stood out that I could see on the show was none other than……………………. you got it …………………………….JAY BABY!!!! Joking, I'm joking! I had a VIP and got in and out with in 20 min so I didn't get to see a lot of people. The ones that I did see were not dressed up, just jeans and tee-shirts. The crying woman that tried to steal my thunder had on a little frillie flower shirt.
I must confess we drove back to the site about 3 hours after we left to check out the competition in the line and said no Brad Pitts or Jennifer Lopez' and gave each other a five and left. So to answer your question I didn't see people that stood out.
"no Brad Pitts or Jennifer Lopez’ and gave each other a five" LOVE IT! You do have quite the personality.
Since you didn't get a call back, you are SENDING IN A TAPE, RIGHT?
It's funny…. Of course I want to be on the show, but I'm totally rooting for some people on here too. I guess I'm nota all bad. 😉
I would love to know if they are sending the request for bio/background/tape to only certain states at a time because I haven't seen anyone from NY or Chi post anything about the bio or background check stuff. You know like when they do callbacks, they do the out of towners first then call back the ones in state…I know that sounds confusing but not sure how else to word it to make more sense…anyone know what I mean?
People- WHY?????????? Can't we all just get along! We don't want to debate about religion, please take that else where.
Le Le- I've already sent in a tape before the casting call.
I'm like you I'm routing for people too! I just love people and love to see them succsessful! So I'm excited for the cc to be over and to start hearing about peoples weight loss stories!
lilacdaisy – where are you coming from? It's about 8-9 hours from me, as well. I cannot decide whether I should go or not. ugg….
People/Screwed/Anonymous/OverlyOverweight/WhoKnowsWhoElse is trolling and trying to start crap. Just ignore them. It's really sad that some people have nothing better to do than try to start crap on the internet. Get a life!
Jay Baby, I want to become a member of the Jay Baby fan club! 😉
as far as getting a request for bio/background, some people have shared their experience on here, I think over on page 1. From what I recall, it varied from a few hours after their interview to a couple days, but no longer than that. If they tell you that they will let you know in a few weeks, I wouldn't get to hopeful that you will hear something. It sounds like they are really moving quickly with the people they are interested in. One person mentioned they only had 7 days to get theirs in. I really doubt they would wait a couple weeks to contact someone, though I could be wrong…just doesn't seem to fit the pattern, even with the variance among casting directors.
I also don't recall anyone actually being told at the one-on-one that they would need to do the next step, someone correct me if I am wrong.
FROM CONFUSION TO WALLOWING–I am coming from Augusta, Ga. I went to Charlotte last saturday, but now I would do some things differently if I went to another CC this saturday. What are you thinking about doing?
I am def a Jay Baby Fan!!!
Lele that is so sweet of you! That made me smile! Oh tear drop don't fall! Okay okay not that I got done with the mushy stuff can you email the cd and tell them you are in my fan club! Haa haaaaa! I'm kidding I'm kidding!
Have you been to casting yet? If so how did it go?
I'm going to the Phoenix CC this weekend. I'm so excited. And nervous!
No need to be nervous sis! You'll do GREAT! Relax and have fun! Do you know who the CD will be?
hey ya'll my cc is on the 14th im super nervous….. im sending good luck vibes to everyone on this site i just wanted to tell everyone to keep their chin up and that whether we get chosen or not it has nothing to do with our worthiness it has to do with us fitting a certain criteria for the specific season…… i hope i fit it as we all do
but with or with out the biggest loser we all can accomplish this this will be my first and last time applying i cant sit here and wait for next season i wish everyone goodluck.

" reach for the stars"
headingtotheranch – yeah people have shared but, i thought the ones I have seen who shared were from charlotte and louisville…just was wondering about the NYC and CHI and Dallas?? They seem to be real quiet lol
Also I thought I may have read from last season that a person didn't hear anything for 2.5 months after the one on one…I might have read it wrong though 🙂 All we can do is hope
I got my VIP pass from Kristin. I believe she has been teamed with Brandon for the past few weekends, but I don't know if that will hold true for this weekend or not.
I haven't sent my video in yet. I've started it, but now I'm waiting to see how the CC goes. I so appreciate the advice and support I've found here!!!
ello!
Jay Baby that was hysterical!
The line about Brad Pitt and Angelina! Haha.
jay baby i just wanted to tell you YOURE AWSOME! 🙂 i look foward to your post
So…… seriously, no one from Dallas is stepping up and saying they got a callback? Surely, one of us from Dallas got a callback. That is just crazy!!!!
DJ, You NEED to contact Jay Baby and give him a 2nd chance. He would make for EXCELLENT TV. We're ready to start a Jay Baby fan club over here!
anonymous yes they said i would be pitched around the 23rd of march
