Biggest Loser Casting Tips (season 8, page 2)

COMMENTING IS CLOSED! THIS POST GOT TOO BIG! YOU CAN CONTINUE THE CONVERSATION ON THE BIGGEST LOSER CASTING TIPS (SEASON 8, PAGE 3) BLOG POST!

Okay, casting is well on it’s way for season eight of Biggest Loser.  I’m reposting this entry to enable people to continue the conversation started here.  There’s over a couple thousand comments worth of ideas, notes, and other information, including casting directors, and former contestants (other than myself), so if you have some time it’s worth exploring.  Here are the vital links:

  • NBC has posted casting information and the application here.
  • Pete Thomas, the season 2 $100,000 winner has some of the best casting call advice out there, which you can find at www.WinningMan.com.
  • Jen Kerns, a season three contestant like myself, and a doctor for the show for seasons four and five, has also put together some fantastic casting advice that you can read here.
  • My original casting tips post with over a thousand comments worth of discussion, click here.  Stacy, Adam, Phil, Amy and Coleen were all reading and posting in the discussion there – it’s fun to look back and realize they were some of the superstars of season six!
  • My second post (fairly identical to this one), with well over two thousand comments worth of discussion, click here.
  • If you’re dealing with disappointment about not being cast, then check out my post on Biggest Loser casting disappointment.

One of the questions I hear a lot is about money … how do contestants afford to be away from home and work for months at a time?  I don’t know what it is now, but when I was a contestant there was a $500 a week stipend for cast members on the ranch.  When you received the check you could cash it and spend it, send it home, save it, whatever.  All airplane tickets, hotel accommodations, etc., for the contestants and potential cast members are taken care of by NBC, and during the casting process it self there was a $50 per diem to cover food costs.

Another question is timing; typically a season lasts for about 8-9 months.  About four of this is spent in filming; if you last all the way until the final three or four, you could be away from home for as much as four months or so.  Once the ranch filming wraps and the last few contestants are sent home, however, there is still another four or five months that all the contestants have to continue losing weight until the finale.  In addition, potential cast members are flown out to California a couple weeks before filming begins for the final round of casting, medical checkups, psychological evals, etc.  NBC brings out more people than what they need and the cast is not finalized until filming literally begins.  People have been cut at the last minute and replacements flown in with hardly any time to spare.  Nothing is in stone until it’s on camera!

When will you hear from Biggest Loser about your video?  There is no way of knowing.  I heard back a few weeks after I sent it in, but even after that it’s a big waiting game.  If you get a phone number or email from a casting direction, definitely drop them a line/call every couple weeks to find out if you’re still in the running or what’s going on.  Schedules and plans change almost every day, so it’s easy to get lost in the shuffle.  If you don’t hear back within a month I would think your video didn’t make the cut.  That doesn’t mean you can’t send in another or visit a casting call – it’s just up to you!

Finally, here’s my video application tips!  This is by no means a recipe for success; it’s based on my video application and the conversations I had with casting directors out in LA in between things.  I was pretty curious about the whole process so I was pumping them for info even after filming began.  I’m such a nerd!

  • They’ve usually decided if they’re interested in you within the first 30-60 seconds of your video, so front load it with your best stuff.  Make it interesting!  Start off with something funny or exciting!
  • Keep in mind, if you’re going to be cast, your video is going to be watched hundreds of times by producers, executives, casting directors, etc.  If it bores you or your friends the second or third time watching it … put some more time into it!
  • Special effects?  Don’t bother!  We’ve all got video editing software with all sorts of bells and whistles on our home computers, but fancy transitions are not going to sell you to people who do video editing for a living.  In fact, it can distract from who you are.  I’m a video editing nerd and I didn’t use any special effects other than putting my name and contact info on as a subtitle at the beginning.
  • Don’t bother talking about why you need to lose weight.  When I first started filming my audition video I started describing all of my health reasons for losing weight – but when I was watching it back, I realized … they don’t need to hear it!  One look at me was all they needed to know I needed to lose weight!  Show them why you need to lose it; I said I needed to lose weight for my kids, and then I followed it with a minute or two of the best footage I could find of me with wrestling with my three boys.  We probably filmed half an hour of that insanity and I grabbed the cutest, loudest, and funniest few moments for the audition video.  Your physical need to lose weight is not nearly as interesting as who or what your losing the weight for.
  • Live loud!  Reality TV is over the top, dramatic, and filled with loud personalities.  They need to see that on your video!  I wanted them to know that even though  I was morbidly obese I was up to the challenge of the crazy competitions and workouts – so I threw on a bunch of clips from my different youth group activities; me getting slimed, snowtubing, playing paintball, screaming at events, being on stage, running around … you get the idea.  Other contestants did things appropriate to their lives; Tim from Oregon had himself spinning out on his Harley, Tim from Delaware recruited his elementary school class to do things with him, Heather Hanson filmed herself running around in a sports bra all day doing her household chores and errands.  The less talking and more action you can have, the better (in my opinion)!
  • If you have footage or photos of yourself thin, include those at some point on the video.  If you can show them what your after will be, then do it!

Remember, enjoy the conversation here and know that I will never compromise your anonymity – not to NBC, 3Ball, Casting Directors or anyone.  You can post anonymously, or you can leave your names and contact information … just remember that NBC likes to be the one announcing their cast for the show, so if you start identifying yourself publicly as a finalist, you’ll probably find yourself eliminated from the casting process.  Good luck to everyone … and let me know if you make the show!  Pete Thomas has more contestants on season seven than I did and I’m bitter!  😉

  1. I was told end of March is when you'll know if you're gonna be sequestered or not. Of course that's subject to change. So you tape people, I know it says March 31st as the deadline for the tape but I urge you to make it no later than the end of this week beginning of next– like Monday. Because if people are going to be notified by end of March that means packaging and pitching will happen as soon as they're done with CBs for LA/San Diego.

  2. About the multiple video debate: I was at the Phoenix CC, where Brandon told us to make a video and send it in. Then send another copy of it a few days later. Then send another copy of it a few days after that. The goal, he said, is to (hopefully) get different CDs looking at your video to increase your chances of getting in.

  3. Let me make myself perfectly clear: Ahem…

NO ONE SHOULD EVER GIVE UP IN THIS PROCESS!!!

I almost did (mentally) and TA DA!! You have to EXPECT that everything is happening as perfectly as it is supposed to and you are in this for the journey NOT the destination! Let life lead you wherever it may, but do your BEST to influence that path as you go along!

If you want anything…NEVER stop trying. 🙂

Who cares if they are taking super obese, somewhat obese or people who just think they are "fat"

YOU create your destiny with your desire and will! Don't let anyone tell you different!

    🙂

  4. Yarra, you may be my favorite "unofficial contestant" EVER.

Seriously though… I can't believe all of the amazing people here. It makes me all verklempt. 😉

  5. I think Girl scout cookies are the devil. Samoas especially. OMG I would kill for one of them right now.

Also, you gotta see a pusher off season to get them. It's horrible.

  6. MisQ…..i think you're information is wrong. The deadline for tapes is March 31, so they WILL be lookin at tapes after that date.

  7. Lele: Aw!! Thank you!! 🙂

    RealHopeful…LMAO!!
My pusher is my freezer. Thin Mints freeze REEEAAAL nice. 🙂

Although, sadly. They never last through the off season. LOL

  8. Hi everyone! I've been a lurker for several months. Thanks to all for your insight and information… it was very informative and helped to put my mind at ease during this experience.

For those who are curious about my experience:

I sent an email with a short bio & pic to Tad, Ian & Holland and asked, very nicely, for a VIP pass for the Columbus CC. Holland notified me that they would not be in Ohio but forwarded my email on and Rita responded with a very encouraging email and the famed pass. I thought, yes! I've made a connection!

I showed up to my CC feeling absolutely amazing. (If you were in Columbus I had on a black & white polka dotted dress shirt with a white patent leather belt, dress jeans & boots. I also have a 3/4 sleeve and other small tats on my wrists. I got there around 11-1130a and was seen around 230p.) After about three hours of waiting I got Paul as my CD. Of course I was disappointed but I took a few deeps breaths and put myself back into that positive & jovial state of mind I'd been in all day. I had a great time debating, actually. Paul even joked about the women 'stirring the pot' on the show. As I left I joked that I'd been reading up on his unconventional casting techniques and really didn't want him as a CD. He said, "I know what they say about me, they think I'm mean." Well, I told him that wasn't the case, thanked him and left.

EVER SINCE I walked out that door I've been running that seven minutes over and over in my mind – as we all have. I didn't receive a call back but I've been working on my tape for months and it's almost ready!

I know they said they've passed up contestants for looking too similiar to others but I thought that's what I had working FOR me. I guess not. I also work at a GLBT bar and wondered if NBC just isn't ready for someone as alternative and liberal as I am.

Anyway, just wanted to put my story out there. If you were in Columbus and recognize me, let me know! Thanks for the ear….er…eyes!

Have a fantastic night everyone and best of luck to us all!

  9. Yarra you and I are in the same boat doll! I want this so bad I can taste it. Do you have a good feeling you'll make it on the ranch this season…I have a feeling you will! I love your enthusiasm YOU RAWK! I hope to see you on the ranch… You sound like someone I could definately have an alliance with!

  10. hey guys!
I just wanted to thank you all for the posts you write. All of yor stories are so inspirational and have really helped me stay focused through all of this. This whole process is nerve-wracking, but so exciting!

  11. Hello everyone! I hope spirits are staying high! Mid April for LA? I guess we have about four plus weeks! Time flys when your having fun! The reason I say Paul is my boy, is because I just think he is one awesome dude that's all! No more than that! I appreciate peeps out there sticking up for me and all but curious is OK! I believe I am and will be just fine! ????????- I do not know who and the heck that is but he sounded like someone I would get along with just fine! Shelly- it's OK girlfriend there will all ways be bashers out there! My job is to stay focused, and to help out in any way I can! I am here to help people not to be mean or discourage! You can refer me to DR. CURIOUS from here on out! GO AHEAD! PULL UP A COUCH! and just let it all out people! Don't hold it in any longer! DR. CURIOUS IS HERE TO HELP! I know this process can be a brutal one and can play on peoples minds! I can just since a lot of anger on the board tonight! And frustration! JUST REMEMBER ONE THING PEOPLE CURIOUS IS ON YOUR SIDE I AM NOT AGAINST ANYONE BUT I AM FOR EVERYONE! I want everyone on this board to make it on that ranch! I wish we all could go! But only a few! Only the best of the best make it on that ranch! I understand that and I am willing to except that! I wish we all could except that!

  12. ???!?!?!?!!!!?????!? Avatar
    ???!?!?!?!!!!?????!?

HA HA HA!!! It's funny how you called me a HE! LoL! I'm sOOOO a SHE! LOL! But I have a BOY NAME! EVERYONE just need to KEEP IT REAL! ONLY the STRONG will SURVIVE! IF everyone one was ALL BUDDY BUDDY on the show it would be BOOOOOORRRRIIINNGG!!!! No one want to watch a PLAIN JANE! <<<<>>>> LoL! BUt loose up PEOPLE!!! I'm OUT! I'm gonna post from my normal name NOW! LoL!

  13. ???!?!?!?!!!!?????!? Avatar
    ???!?!?!?!!!!?????!?

DANG I' shouldn't have post right after you there really gonna think it you! LoL! My bad!

  14. See CURIOUS – we knew you'd be back. You just can't stay away. I think you've said twice already you weren't coming back on, but your ego won't let you stay quiet! We SOOOOO called it. Look man, I have nothing against you, I'm sure you're a nice person, but my God you are getting on almost everyone's nerves here on this board. I will be the first one to tell you because I speak my mind. You are pretty annoying, especially when you refer to yourself in 3rd person. You're not fooling anyone, and honestly you keep saying "wait until you see who the real Curious is!"….well, um, frankly we don't really care. Sorry, just truth.

  15. Curious, I am not bashing but slow down so that you use the English language correctly! If you agree with someone you believe they are "right" ; if you are jotting something down then you "write" it. Above- "since" is from a specific date- like since last year. I believe you meant "sense"- you can feel that people are angry on the blog. I have a small pet peeve- could you tell? Love ya!

  16. sorry if you think i was giving someone a hard time. all i tried to say is no background form means no chances. if someone got the email for the next step, but not the form, there is no next step for them. many of us put a lot of hours into this. i'm sorry questions if you took it the wrong way. based on your note it also sounds like the cd got back to you & said someone else would be sending. i think thats a nice rejection.

  17. but i still think questions is the only one who didn't get the actual background form

  18. yarra-thank you for the encouraging words tonight. I really need it tonight.

  19. I think a nice rejection would be "I'm sorry, but we are not going to go any further with you in the process". That would be a heck of a lot nicer than dragging someone a long. Plus dragging someone a long is going to lead to follow up emails and calls, etc. Do the CD's really have time for those games. It really does sound like the form was left off the email in error.

insideinfo – which CD did you get this info from? I'm sure the CD knows who you are because there can't be that many people contacting CD's asking that exact question, so I'm sure you wouldn't be giving anything away be revealing the CD's name.

  20. LeLe I agree with you. Why dash someone's dreams like that. They should have sent everything and then just not emailed back if they aren't interested, just like they're doing with the rest of us.

insideinfo: why do you think they would do people this way? They know they would receive a load of emails, calls, etc. because of it, so why put someone thru that?

  21. Now that I've posted I can't seem to stop. I feel the need to address insideinfo:

Can we please but this 'form' conversation to rest? You believe it was a way of rejecting in a nice way. The majority of the board disagrees. I agree that the CD's are much too busy for polite rejection at this point. It was a clerical error.

I hope I didn't upset you, but I just had to get that out!

  22. Ok, I hate to bother anyone but I need a favor. I have tried to get a V.I.P pass. Everyone seems to be getting one. I emailed Tad three times and sent pics. I have looked throught this whole page and have not found Hollands or anyone eles email. If someone knows this information or could get this info I would sooo greatly appritiate your help.

  23. Yes, please let's put this to rest people. Questions just needs to contact his/her CD and get the info straight from them. We should not be speculating on here, just getting Questions all nervous about this. Once he/she gets the answer, then that's that.

inside info: Thank you for your inside info on the casting process, now onto the next topic of discussion.

  24. annenoni muss- I do appreciate the kind words! Do you need any advice? That is what CURIOUS is here for to help!! ???????- I guess you are a she! I thought you were a he! yankee- I am sorry! I will try to slow down! LOL!! Did you find anything this time?

  25. simply me: press CTRL+F and a find window will come up. Type in "Holland" or ".com" and it should get you all the CD's email addy's posted on here from earlier. Hope this helps! Good luck.

  26. Curious – are you selling crazy cause we're all stocked up here, thanks anyways?!? Don't need advice from a person who refers to himself in 3rd person. You, on the other hand, well that's another story…You may go far in this process, who knows, but once the psychological testing starts oh man you are out of luck! LOL I'm not saying anything more to bring attention to you now, that's what you thrive on. Have a nice day.

  27. LeLe…
"insideinfo – which CD did you get this info from? I’m sure the CD knows who you are because there can’t be that many people contacting CD’s asking that exact question, so I’m sure you wouldn’t be giving anything away be revealing the CD’s name."

LOL. I love it. 🙂 You are one sharp cookie!

Curious- I am not hatin' here. but seriously. You say you are here to help and encourage. But all any of us really see is you tooting your own horn and saying how great you will be and are at helping people. Dr. Curious/Denis Rodman, that's not helping people.

But anywho. Curious- You definitely should get cast, from what I know of you here, you would be the one America Loves to Hate, that's "fo sho'!" You drive me nuts! And I say that with a heart full of kindness. 🙂 Just keep being you! That's all you can do! If people love you, they love you. If they hate you, so what! If you show up everyday in your life being 100% you, not falling short, or overcompensating, you have NO regrets.

Simplyme – Your welcome! Just stay focused on what really matters. 🙂 Your health. 🙂

insideinfo – SO WHAT IF Questions didn't get the background info!! Let it go man!! Let them concentrate on sending in their tape, contacting their CD. It's not your job to discourage or dissuade them!

Questions – if you are worried make two copies of your video. Send one with your paperwork to your CD, send another just like you would if you were applying via video tape! Cover your bases. 🙂 Good luck!

  28. IS THERE ANY BODY OUT THERE WHO NEEDS TO TALK! Is there anything you need to get off your chest? Can anybody fill me in on the show tonight? I was attending my oldest sons play off basketball game! My son fouled out early but they won the game! MY T-SHIRT ON THE RANCH IS GOING TO SAY DO IT FOR THE BOYS!!! They are my heart and soul! My boys are who keep me going! THAT IS PART OF MY STORY! Is there anybody out there willing to discuss anything about there casting journey so far! I AM ALL EARS!

  29. Hello All,
I have been reading the postings for about two weeks now. Things are seemingly taking a crazy turn….. I have a question! I am driving 9 hours to go to the LA casting this weekend. I took the advice of many people here and emailed Tad for the ever-so-magical VIP pass. I still haven't heard back from him. I also checked my spam filter…… So what do you think? Should I email another casting director, or just let it go? I seriously wouldn't want to be a nuisance before I even try out. I sent my video and app in late last week. I'm not too concerned about the VIP pass…it would just be SUPERB to have. Any advice or words of wisdom would be welcome 🙂

  30. insideinfo Says: "i think thats a nice rejection".

OK…Just because someone says they'll have someone else email the form….DOES NOT mean it's a rejection. I had an email from someone saying something would be coming my way and guess what??? IT DID!!!!

Insideinfo….idk where you're getting your info, but I think your info could be slightly off. Stop trying to bring other people's dreams down, just so you have a better shot of making it to the ranch. Let's all be supportive of each other, ok? This process is hard enough, we don't need anyone bringing anyone down or any negative comments from anyone.

Now, with that beind said. People, DO NOT believe everything people tell you, UNLESS it's coming STRAIGHT from the horses mouth!!

  31. Curious….email me at blnotgivinguphope@yahoo.com and I'll fill ya in if you want. That is if you're nice!

  32. my3sons: don't get too nervous about it…you have to remember these CD's are still interviewing from their last CC, probably up until tomorrow, so they may not be checking their emails or getting back to people just yet. I'm sure they're up to their ears in trying to get these one on ones done and onto the next stop. Keep believing, keep the faith, maybe you'll get an email. If not, check craigslist. Good luck!

  33. YARRA- IT'S ALL GOOD DUDE! I am here to help! I do care! I am a lova not a fighta! I just don't understand why people don't like me what did I do or say about anyone that was negative or mean or discouraging? I don't think there is nothing of the sort! I am just being me! THIS IS THE REAL ME! What does everyone say to do when you go in to your interview? THEY TELL YOU TO BE YOURSELF! SHOW THE CD'S WHO YOU ARE! Well that is what I do all the time! I am always myself! I AM REAL! THERE IS NOTHING FAKE ABOUT ME! WHAT YOU SEE IS WHAT YOU GET! You either love me or love to hate me! What happened tonight on the TBL??

  34. CURIOUS…..email me and I'll fill ya in on it. I don't want to spoil it for anyone who hasn't watched it yet.

    blnotgivinguphope@yahoo.com

  35. NOTGIVINGUPHOPE-I would rather not! But thank you for offering! that was very kind of you!

  36. That email works like a caller ID thing! Not willing to give away who I am just yet!!

  37. Curious….are you afraid I might reveal who I am? or you might reveal who you are? You wouldn't have to worry about that my email is strictly anonymous (my name is no where in it, not even in my outgoing name). I'm not gonna give anyone my name, cuz I don't want to jeopardize my chances of making it to the ranch.

  38. I UNDERSTAND! BUT……. MY EMAIL DOES HAVE MY NAME IN IT!! SORRY!!

  39. Ah, I gotcha. Tthat's why I created a special account. Just so I would be able to stay anonymous.

  40. By the way, you have to yell at me.

  41. Oops…..didn't…..sorry

  42. annenoni muss-
Thanks for the encouraging words! I really am going into this casting with a realistic view. I am figuring my odds are about a million to one, but I have to try. I tried out three years ago in NYC. I honestly had NO clue what the casting procedure was. Now I feel prepared and excited. I am not the same person I was then.. and I think that will help. I think you are right though….I will not email them. I am sure they have a TON on their plates. I did check the LA Craigslist… and couldn't find anything. But honestly….it could be the problem of the internet savey person typing this 🙂 Thanks again!

  43. Hey where are the CD'S at! HOLLAND? DJ? Whats up? Its been awhile! What do you all think of my postings? Can you chime in? I miss all of the great advice! You two are awesome! Really! Keep up the good work! I think we all fail to realize sometimes how hard your job really is! This will be the eighth season for TBL and still going strong! I absolutely love this show! Every cast every season all ways come strong! There is never a weak link! And you two are a big part of why that is so! I hope to here some more casting tips from the professionals! I am looking forward to it!

  44. MATT YOU TO BROTHER! WHERE YOU BEEN? MISS YA!

  45. I'm around … things have been crazy hectic for me the last week or two and I've gotten waaaaaay behind on all things digital; email, blog, facebook, myspace, twitter … probably some other social medias that I'm forgetting at the moment … I'm behind on all of 'em!!! Argh!

  46. i welcome a visit from cds to clear up the advice

  47. Everyone needs to slow down and chill out. I understand we are all nervous and anxious, but seriously, let's not let information being posted here get the best of you. Right now there are many cooks in this kitchen, and the heat is really high. I think we need to pump the breaks here. lol

Regarding the person who did not get an attached background check… I am a little perplexed because I know in the email (containing the background check, bio, etc.) had specific directions (that I will NOT repeat) on how to ask your CD and the LA office a question via email. At least mine did. If you really got the email, you would know. Others who got the email can verify. 🙂 It does not hurt to email the CD with one email to ask your question, regardless. Just don't bombard them – they are busy enough.

Also, casting will not tell you if you did not make it to the next round. They only contact those who they are interested in. Yes, it's harsh, but that is the way most of the industry does casting for any venue. You need to chalk it up and keep your head high, no matter how much the rejection hurts you. And, believe me, I have been through this before and know this process and rejection very well.

insideinfo just got my vote off the ranch tonight 😉 So did Yarra on the sole reason of having Girl Scout cookies when I don't. lol

  48. does anyone know if i can send in a video of myself and partner together or do i have to send in a seperate video for each of us????

  49. insideinfo which cd told you that they do that as a polite rejection?
