COMMENTING IS CLOSED! THIS POST GOT TOO BIG! YOU CAN CONTINUE THE CONVERSATION ON THE BIGGEST LOSER CASTING TIPS (SEASON 8, PAGE 3) BLOG POST!

Okay, casting is well on it’s way for season eight of Biggest Loser. I’m reposting this entry to enable people to continue the conversation started here. There’s over a couple thousand comments worth of ideas, notes, and other information, including casting directors, and former contestants (other than myself), so if you have some time it’s worth exploring. Here are the vital links:
- NBC has posted casting information and the application here.
- Pete Thomas, the season 2 $100,000 winner has some of the best casting call advice out there, which you can find at www.WinningMan.com.
- Jen Kerns, a season three contestant like myself, and a doctor for the show for seasons four and five, has also put together some fantastic casting advice that you can read here.
- My original casting tips post with over a thousand comments worth of discussion, click here. Stacy, Adam, Phil, Amy and Coleen were all reading and posting in the discussion there – it’s fun to look back and realize they were some of the superstars of season six!
- My second post (fairly identical to this one), with well over two thousand comments worth of discussion, click here.
- If you’re dealing with disappointment about not being cast, then check out my post on Biggest Loser casting disappointment.
One of the questions I hear a lot is about money … how do contestants afford to be away from home and work for months at a time? I don’t know what it is now, but when I was a contestant there was a $500 a week stipend for cast members on the ranch. When you received the check you could cash it and spend it, send it home, save it, whatever. All airplane tickets, hotel accommodations, etc., for the contestants and potential cast members are taken care of by NBC, and during the casting process it self there was a $50 per diem to cover food costs.
Another question is timing; typically a season lasts for about 8-9 months. About four of this is spent in filming; if you last all the way until the final three or four, you could be away from home for as much as four months or so. Once the ranch filming wraps and the last few contestants are sent home, however, there is still another four or five months that all the contestants have to continue losing weight until the finale. In addition, potential cast members are flown out to California a couple weeks before filming begins for the final round of casting, medical checkups, psychological evals, etc. NBC brings out more people than what they need and the cast is not finalized until filming literally begins. People have been cut at the last minute and replacements flown in with hardly any time to spare. Nothing is in stone until it’s on camera!
When will you hear from Biggest Loser about your video? There is no way of knowing. I heard back a few weeks after I sent it in, but even after that it’s a big waiting game. If you get a phone number or email from a casting direction, definitely drop them a line/call every couple weeks to find out if you’re still in the running or what’s going on. Schedules and plans change almost every day, so it’s easy to get lost in the shuffle. If you don’t hear back within a month I would think your video didn’t make the cut. That doesn’t mean you can’t send in another or visit a casting call – it’s just up to you!
Finally, here’s my video application tips! This is by no means a recipe for success; it’s based on my video application and the conversations I had with casting directors out in LA in between things. I was pretty curious about the whole process so I was pumping them for info even after filming began. I’m such a nerd!
-
They’ve usually decided if they’re interested in you within the first 30-60 seconds of your video, so front load it with your best stuff. Make it interesting! Start off with something funny or exciting!
-
Keep in mind, if you’re going to be cast, your video is going to be watched hundreds of times by producers, executives, casting directors, etc. If it bores you or your friends the second or third time watching it … put some more time into it!
-
Special effects? Don’t bother! We’ve all got video editing software with all sorts of bells and whistles on our home computers, but fancy transitions are not going to sell you to people who do video editing for a living. In fact, it can distract from who you are. I’m a video editing nerd and I didn’t use any special effects other than putting my name and contact info on as a subtitle at the beginning.
-
Don’t bother talking about why you need to lose weight. When I first started filming my audition video I started describing all of my health reasons for losing weight – but when I was watching it back, I realized … they don’t need to hear it! One look at me was all they needed to know I needed to lose weight! Show them why you need to lose it; I said I needed to lose weight for my kids, and then I followed it with a minute or two of the best footage I could find of me with wrestling with my three boys. We probably filmed half an hour of that insanity and I grabbed the cutest, loudest, and funniest few moments for the audition video. Your physical need to lose weight is not nearly as interesting as who or what your losing the weight for.
-
Live loud! Reality TV is over the top, dramatic, and filled with loud personalities. They need to see that on your video! I wanted them to know that even though I was morbidly obese I was up to the challenge of the crazy competitions and workouts – so I threw on a bunch of clips from my different youth group activities; me getting slimed, snowtubing, playing paintball, screaming at events, being on stage, running around … you get the idea. Other contestants did things appropriate to their lives; Tim from Oregon had himself spinning out on his Harley, Tim from Delaware recruited his elementary school class to do things with him, Heather Hanson filmed herself running around in a sports bra all day doing her household chores and errands. The less talking and more action you can have, the better (in my opinion)!
-
If you have footage or photos of yourself thin, include those at some point on the video. If you can show them what your after will be, then do it!
Remember, enjoy the conversation here and know that I will never compromise your anonymity – not to NBC, 3Ball, Casting Directors or anyone. You can post anonymously, or you can leave your names and contact information … just remember that NBC likes to be the one announcing their cast for the show, so if you start identifying yourself publicly as a finalist, you’ll probably find yourself eliminated from the casting process. Good luck to everyone … and let me know if you make the show! Pete Thomas has more contestants on season seven than I did and I’m bitter! 😉

RealHopeful-
Heeeyy!! I TOTALLY offered to share!! Yes you will have to wait until we get to the ranch to get one. BUT GEEZ!
🙂
Ya know Realhopeful is right by saying, "Also, casting will not tell you if you did not make it to the next round". Think of it like a job. Not every employer will call you and tell you if you're hired or not. I've had some companies send me a letter in the mail and state that at "this" time weren't interested in me, but would keep my resume on hand for future employement. Then there are those who don't contact me at all. I find those ones more upsetting. You know you're qualified for a specific job and then when you don't get called…..well, it's heartbreaking sometimes. I know for one thing, I am SICK and TIRED of rejection. I've been dealing with it for almost my whole life. I'm sure BL will yet be another rejection. But, I'm NOT giving up quite yet.
But what about BL last night…..can we say WOW???? First of all Sione and Filipe going back to train with Bob…..that was tense. I hope next week they talk to Jillian about what happened and work things out. I thought FOR sure black team would've ended up sending someone home with the way they ate and lack of a workout. I also wish Mandi would've stuck with the plan…to make it a tie vote and have black team vote out either Ron or Cathy. But, Mandi looks AMAZING! Can't wait to see what she looks like at the finale. I also keep thinking about Dan and wondering what he looks like today. Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh, I can't wait for the finale.
Oh yeah and realhopeful…..I too have some girl scout cookies. MMMMMMMMMMMM! They're soooooooooo YUMMILICIOUS!!!! lol. 🙂
Matt I understand! GOOD MORNING! FELLOW BLOGERS! WHAT IS GOING TO BE THE TOPIC FOR THE DAY!
Simplyme- Email me at lynn_carter@ymail.com ABOUT the VIP Pass I can help you!{{{ This iis NOT MY PERSONAL EMAIL! That's not EVEN my name!}}} I created this SIMPLY for SIMPLY me! I suggest you ALL get one…
I told simplyme to scroll up on this page since I had posted the requested email. I think alot of people out there do have an anonymous email….I actually have a couple of them. It's definitely a good idea so you don't give away your identity.
For the record, this is a word press blog… every time you comment, or even browse it logs who you are, and where you are. With your IP address, your ISP can then be determined and eventually your identity based off your dsl ppoe credentials, or the mac address of your cable modem and etc. So no one on here is annonymous period. Although I suppose… you could always blame your dog for posting when you werent looking.
I have a question.
Don't you think that they have a whole different set of casting directors watching the mailed in videos daily? For some reason, I keep getting it in my head that the videos won't be seen until all the casting directors that are on the road get back to LA. I'm guessing this is how it works: The casting directors that are in LA watching videos make their own selections, then when the road crew gets back, they all compare their "faves" and make their selections from all of them? Would I be correct?! LOL
Still wondering who else is going to the LA casting?
running late, it's been said by DJ I believe (or some other CD) that they have someone in LA watching the tapes. So they're being watched as we speak. Think about it, if they waited until tomorrow to begin watching tapes they would never get done.
I do believe that they get together and compare their "finds" from the road and from the tapes. I know for fact that my tape, which I sent a long time ago, has been viewed by all those in charge of making selections (this is how I got a VIP pass).
I have a quick question (and apologize if this has already been answered). I sent in a casting video about a month ago and haven't heard anything back….. is this bad? Has anyone sent videos in and heard anything? Thanks for any information!! 🙂
QuickQuestion – From what the cd's have indicated, there isn't a "set" timeframe to have your tape viewed and be contacted. The deadline is March 31st to send in a tape. A couple people that post on here have been contacted about their video, either telling them to go to a casting call, or directly sending them to an interview. They seem to have had about a 5-6 week lag from when they sent it in. I wouldn't use that as the timeframe, just a couple examples, assuming they are being truthful (yes, people post lies on here). Sorry, that probably isn't super helpful, but atleast lets you know what others have experienced.
Holy buckets! Miss a day on this blog and you miss a lot! I have been trying to catch up by reading the posts but I think I would be here all day if I did that.
I am STILL working on my video. I think I have put about 20 hours worth of work into it so far. Anyone else find it to be a long process?
I am not even doing anything fancy…just some cutting here and there. Uffda! I am starting to get nervous that I won't make the deadline. Then I tell myself…you have time, you have time…March 31st is like 2 weeks away.
Thanks for the info regarding season 8. I feel much better about my chances now that I know they would like someone that needs to lose 100lbs or more.
I want to wish everyone luck at the final cc's coming up this weekend! Let yourselves shine!! 🙂
Headingtotheranch – I was going to LA but my girlfriend who I was going to get to keep my stepdaughter this weekend is having some dental surgery today. I though about have my mother come drive down from Ft Worth to Houston and stay with her since her father went back to work today (he works in the oil fields), but I decided that since I wouldn’t be guaranteed a cb if I went to LA I am not going. So, I am going to pick up my girlfriend’s daughter and keep her for the weekend so she can rest post-surgery. I am going to redo my video and send it in. If it is meant to be then it will be from the video.
I think that TBL should send everyone that is blogging here tickets for the finale since we were not picked to go to the ranch.
i just sent my video in!!!!!
annabanana- it did seem to take a while, so dont stress! take your time and make sure that you'd said/shown them everything you want to. i'm sure it'll be great! 🙂
Hey all: Changed my name to add to the flav of the topics for today.
Anyhow, was Jillian just testing Filippe in the gym when she was working out everyone BUT him, or was that a mistake?
I would have been upset too…….but Jillian was right, I think Bob should have told Filippe to go talk to Jillian before the last chance workout….
What does everyone think?
Thanks Skittles! I really appreciate the encouragement!
As mentioned by someone else here…it does take a lot of courage to share yourself and your story. I just KNOW that it is being done for all the right reasons though and I CAN NOT wait to see if TBL powers that be agree! I tried to add a lot of humor to it to make it more interested…I hope I don't come across as corny. 🙂
I have not seen last night's show yet (it is on the DVR) so please don't tell me what happened! (Sorry Josie)
I am trying to stay away from that blog so I don't accidentally hear something about it! 🙂
Being that the deadline for tapes is March 31, I'm sure they'll still be viewing tapes the first week of April and then from there narrow things down. Especially since it's been said by CD's they view EVERY tape that goes through. Just make sure your tape is in before that deadline.
Josie….It might have been an error on Jillian's part and over looked him, but at the same time, maybe it was a test. But, I agree Bob should've sent him back to work things out with Jillian. I hope they do work things out. Although, I still think we're getting close to them being singles.
I know, and the suspense keeps going and going. Ya know, I heard that Dan has lost 136 lbs so far….I am wondering who will be the BL that is home.
That was the number for Dane, it was not shown on the episode that aired, but it was on the show site video – "Where are they now?" When Dan left, his said he had lost 101 lbs. since he has been gone. Umm, yeah…I am good with numbers and have been a big fan of the show since season 4. Not trying to be a jerk, just if both have lost the same amount that'd be pretty weird, but who knows, lol.
I don't know…..but IF Dan is still doing GREAT at home (and I'm sure he is)…..I can seriously see him possibly being the at home winner. Then again, we don't know in what order the other contestants went home and who the final 4 or 3 are. IF by some chance Mike was sent home and didn't make the final 4 or 3. Then it's going to be interesting as to who the at home winner will be. On that note, I think Mike is doing a GREAT job.
ok did anyone else get Jillians blog where she forgot to add Sione in the list of her team members?
Le Le – I think we were in the same group in PHX. It was interesting to say the least. The debate format was the worst case scenario for me because like you I was not raised to be rude. I was trying like a crazy woman to be heard, but it was tough in that group. I am so disappointed because like everyone else here I think I'd be perfect for the show. I'm gonna send in a video and pray for the best!
I don’t blame Jillian he did not want to workout with her and it showed in his attitude. Why should she put herself out and he did not respect what she was doing for him.
But I was so mad at the black team for going crazy just because they were not at the ranch. I would have gone and worked out, came back and got a massage and relaxed.
So how many of you are going to the casting calls this weeekend?
i couldnt believe all of the food that they ate! I mean…chicken tenders, really? As much as I love the black team, I kind of wish that they had lost the weigh in so they could really learn the lesson. they got lucky.
Good luck to all going to cc this weekend.
headingtotheranch and annabanana-
I will be going to the LA casting this weekend. Haven't both of you already been contacted by casting? Should I be concerned at all that LA is the "acting" capital of America? 🙂 I am NOT an actor….just my weird self!
Hey all! Quick question: I have been thinking of auditioning for a while, and just today decided to just do it! I know the deadline for the video is March 31, but I am concerned about cutting it too close. Will videos that are received on the 31st actually get seen? Thanks!
nervous but hopeful: there's some discussion about this if you scroll up. I think you should trust them that a deadline is a deadline and that they'll do their best to watch all of the videos that come in. that being said, it doesnt hurt to send it in before. So have fun making the video and just show as much of your personality as you can! 🙂
good luck!
Is anyone here 18 or 19??? Just asking because everyone on the show has been 21-100 LoL! Except for MiKe this season…
I'm 20…
also Dan from this season is 19
My3Sons….good luck this weekend!
I have not been able to make it to a CC. I live in the frozen tundra and it would have been around $700 for me to get to one. I REALLY wanted to though.
I am just sending in a video and praying. I have been working on the video for what feels like weeks and am hoping to complete it by the end of this week.
I don't know if I would be worried about the actors in LA…after all, my impression is that they want real people. Just be yourself and speak from the heart and I am sure you will do great! Show them how much you ROCK! 🙂
oh ok…. you're a women??
P.S. I WISH I was somewhere NEAR 18-20 years old! LOL!
Kiki….what blog are you talking about?
I wouldn't care who I was working out with Bob or Jillian I would be put 110% into my workout.
Annabanana – I will be there!
annabanana-
I totally get why you aren't going! Money was a concern for me too….It is less for me to go (around $300). I just decided that this my time to go! Plus…it gives me a 3 day break to be by myself! My name says it all….MY 3 SONS….I am tired 🙂
headingtotheranch- See you there maybe!
My3Sons: did you get a V.I.P. pass for L.A.?
I am still trying to get a V.I.P and can not find all the casting directors names. Please can someone help me?
simplyme- No I haven't gotten a VIP pass. I emailed Tad over the weekend and still haven't heard back. I was going to email some of the other CD's, but I don't want to harrass them. Have you emailed anyone, or looked on Craigslist? I haven't been able to find ANYTHING on the LA Craigslist.
hey m3sons and simplyme do you have facebook???? If you do, look on there for the cds or for some of the contestants past and present, and ask them for one or how to get one.
hmmmlaorbust-
This is probably a REALLY dumb question, but don't you have to have the person's whole name to find them on Facebook? I DO have facebook though! I actually just finished emailing Erik Chopin's wife on Myspace. I'm not sure she would know anything….what do you think?
I have emailed tad 3 times and holland 2 time. Its hard because I am driving 10 hours to get their. I know there is D.J. & Rita but I do not know there email address yet. I dont know what to do now. I guess I will just go anyway and hope for the best.
simplyme-
I am driving 9 hours to get to the LA casting. Do you live in Norcal?
Also, I think that reverting back to my teenage stalking days (ask my ex-boyfriend..NOT kidding 🙂 ) would not be a good thing for me. I am just hoping for the best. Obviously I emailed too late. If I could get one on the LOCK down….that would be great. If not…..12 hours in the chilly tundra will be fun!
m3sons
look for can you email me dianafburke@cox.net, simply me you can too if you'd like to.
sorry i meant just email me, lol, i have some info i dont want to post about. thanks
if you dont get back to me within the next 15 mins i will email you when i get home in a couple of hours, but it will be worth it.
