Biggest Loser Casting Tips (season 8, page 2)

COMMENTING IS CLOSED! THIS POST GOT TOO BIG! YOU CAN CONTINUE THE CONVERSATION ON THE BIGGEST LOSER CASTING TIPS (SEASON 8, PAGE 3) BLOG POST!

Okay, casting is well on it’s way for season eight of Biggest Loser.  I’m reposting this entry to enable people to continue the conversation started here.  There’s over a couple thousand comments worth of ideas, notes, and other information, including casting directors, and former contestants (other than myself), so if you have some time it’s worth exploring.  Here are the vital links:

  • NBC has posted casting information and the application here.
  • Pete Thomas, the season 2 $100,000 winner has some of the best casting call advice out there, which you can find at www.WinningMan.com.
  • Jen Kerns, a season three contestant like myself, and a doctor for the show for seasons four and five, has also put together some fantastic casting advice that you can read here.
  • My original casting tips post with over a thousand comments worth of discussion, click here.  Stacy, Adam, Phil, Amy and Coleen were all reading and posting in the discussion there – it’s fun to look back and realize they were some of the superstars of season six!
  • My second post (fairly identical to this one), with well over two thousand comments worth of discussion, click here.
  • If you’re dealing with disappointment about not being cast, then check out my post on Biggest Loser casting disappointment.

One of the questions I hear a lot is about money … how do contestants afford to be away from home and work for months at a time?  I don’t know what it is now, but when I was a contestant there was a $500 a week stipend for cast members on the ranch.  When you received the check you could cash it and spend it, send it home, save it, whatever.  All airplane tickets, hotel accommodations, etc., for the contestants and potential cast members are taken care of by NBC, and during the casting process it self there was a $50 per diem to cover food costs.

Another question is timing; typically a season lasts for about 8-9 months.  About four of this is spent in filming; if you last all the way until the final three or four, you could be away from home for as much as four months or so.  Once the ranch filming wraps and the last few contestants are sent home, however, there is still another four or five months that all the contestants have to continue losing weight until the finale.  In addition, potential cast members are flown out to California a couple weeks before filming begins for the final round of casting, medical checkups, psychological evals, etc.  NBC brings out more people than what they need and the cast is not finalized until filming literally begins.  People have been cut at the last minute and replacements flown in with hardly any time to spare.  Nothing is in stone until it’s on camera!

When will you hear from Biggest Loser about your video?  There is no way of knowing.  I heard back a few weeks after I sent it in, but even after that it’s a big waiting game.  If you get a phone number or email from a casting direction, definitely drop them a line/call every couple weeks to find out if you’re still in the running or what’s going on.  Schedules and plans change almost every day, so it’s easy to get lost in the shuffle.  If you don’t hear back within a month I would think your video didn’t make the cut.  That doesn’t mean you can’t send in another or visit a casting call – it’s just up to you!

Finally, here’s my video application tips!  This is by no means a recipe for success; it’s based on my video application and the conversations I had with casting directors out in LA in between things.  I was pretty curious about the whole process so I was pumping them for info even after filming began.  I’m such a nerd!

  • They’ve usually decided if they’re interested in you within the first 30-60 seconds of your video, so front load it with your best stuff.  Make it interesting!  Start off with something funny or exciting!
  • Keep in mind, if you’re going to be cast, your video is going to be watched hundreds of times by producers, executives, casting directors, etc.  If it bores you or your friends the second or third time watching it … put some more time into it!
  • Special effects?  Don’t bother!  We’ve all got video editing software with all sorts of bells and whistles on our home computers, but fancy transitions are not going to sell you to people who do video editing for a living.  In fact, it can distract from who you are.  I’m a video editing nerd and I didn’t use any special effects other than putting my name and contact info on as a subtitle at the beginning.
  • Don’t bother talking about why you need to lose weight.  When I first started filming my audition video I started describing all of my health reasons for losing weight – but when I was watching it back, I realized … they don’t need to hear it!  One look at me was all they needed to know I needed to lose weight!  Show them why you need to lose it; I said I needed to lose weight for my kids, and then I followed it with a minute or two of the best footage I could find of me with wrestling with my three boys.  We probably filmed half an hour of that insanity and I grabbed the cutest, loudest, and funniest few moments for the audition video.  Your physical need to lose weight is not nearly as interesting as who or what your losing the weight for.
  • Live loud!  Reality TV is over the top, dramatic, and filled with loud personalities.  They need to see that on your video!  I wanted them to know that even though  I was morbidly obese I was up to the challenge of the crazy competitions and workouts – so I threw on a bunch of clips from my different youth group activities; me getting slimed, snowtubing, playing paintball, screaming at events, being on stage, running around … you get the idea.  Other contestants did things appropriate to their lives; Tim from Oregon had himself spinning out on his Harley, Tim from Delaware recruited his elementary school class to do things with him, Heather Hanson filmed herself running around in a sports bra all day doing her household chores and errands.  The less talking and more action you can have, the better (in my opinion)!
  • If you have footage or photos of yourself thin, include those at some point on the video.  If you can show them what your after will be, then do it!

Remember, enjoy the conversation here and know that I will never compromise your anonymity – not to NBC, 3Ball, Casting Directors or anyone.  You can post anonymously, or you can leave your names and contact information … just remember that NBC likes to be the one announcing their cast for the show, so if you start identifying yourself publicly as a finalist, you’ll probably find yourself eliminated from the casting process.  Good luck to everyone … and let me know if you make the show!  Pete Thomas has more contestants on season seven than I did and I’m bitter!  😉

    hmmmmlaorbust – Ah, got it.

  5. There are alot of people saying that after sending in a tape, they were called to go to a cc. What if you get a call or email after all the ccs are over? What happens then? Will a cd make a trip tp a city near you for a one on one?

On that note, if anyone coming in to LA needs some travel advice, directions, etc…I'm happy to help. I've lived here forever, lol. You can email me at biggest_loser@rocketmail.com (yes, completely anonymous email, lol)

  7. Simplyme…..What did you all say in your email? Anyway, maybe the reason why they haven't answered you could be because they are very busy right now. Don't forget this is the last weekend of CC. Really all a VIP pass entiles is that you can skip the long line. It does NOT ensure you'll make it to the ranch.

Here's my advice……If you can leave your home early Friday and relax at a hotel. Then be early for the CC. But, I wouldn't give up just because a CD won't answer your emails.

  8. will be back in a bit if you want to email simply me.

  9. headingtotheranch-

I am coming from Northern California, two hours north of Sac. How about you?

  10. ALso, will everyone recieve a notice that their video has at least been watched?

  11. simplyme- You can email me @ tllrgrl25@sbcglobal.net for the info hmmmlaorbust sent. It isn't anonymous, but I don't care. I haven't even been to a casting call yet.

    My3Sons – I live here in the LA area…

  13. armywyfe-

I have sent two videos in for past seasons and never heard one way or the other. I am sure they watch all the videos, and contact the people they are interested in. If they had to email everyone that sent one in, I am sure it would be time consuming. I might be wrong though….you never know!

Armywyfe – I don't think you hear anything unless they are interested in having you interview, or come to a casting call. I would recommend using delivery confirmation, at least that way you know it was delivered. Beyond that, they say they watch them all and I believe they do.

  15. armywife….no, you will not be notified your dvd was watched. But, I assure you all of them do get watched, that is coming from CD's. The only way you get notified is if they want you to continue the process to go on the show.

  16. A little bit of research goes along way…All I did was go to craigslist and do a biggest loser search on one of the former cities. Just an FYI: TBL wants some proactive people, not those that wait for things to come. Yes we're all overweight but it seems like some of us are more willing to spend a few extra minutes looking for answers than waiting for them. I don't say this to be mean; it's just that my pet peeves are whining and people who wait for life to happen to them.

WE ARE NOW CASTING FOR BOTH INDIVIDUALS AND TEAMS!

We are currently looking for outgoing and charismatic people who have personality along with the WANT, DESIRE and COMPETITIVE EDGE to vie for this once in a lifetime opportunity to change your lives forever and compete for $250,000!

-DO YOU WANT TO LOSE WEIGHT FOR YOUR WEDDING DAY OR TO START DATING AGAIN?

  18. hey everyone, i've been lurking for a while now, and thought i'd give my insight.

armywyfe – at this point in the process, i don't know what happens once all of the casting calls are done and they like you from what they've seen in the video. i know last season when i applied, they liked me, asked me to come to a casting call, and also asked me to send in another video. so they might just do that, so they can see more of you. i truly doubt they are going to come make a trip just to see one person.

i've also had my one on one, sent in all my of background info, bio, etc, and am now in the same boat as everyone else waiting to be notified of the next step 🙂

  19. Jillian's leaving?!? What in the world?!? I wanted her to be my trainer! http://realitytv.about.com/b/2006/05/11/biggest-l

  20. Anyone know where Holland will be this weekend? San Diego or LA? Or do you know where specific other CD's will be? Tad? Paul? Kirstin? DJ? Rita? Others?

I'm trying to decide which one to go to.

    Thanks!

  21. armywifre, from what i understand if they like you from your video they ask you for more video, then more video, then maybe even more video. that's just what i've heard.

  22. MisQ – That is dated May 11, 2006. That was from when she left BEFORE.

  23. Wow. I thought Jillian would be on the show forever(ish). She's been a staple for so many seasons…

  24. I blame Filipe!!!

  25. MissQ…..Jillian is NOT going anywhere.

If you look at that article, you will see the date on it is 2006. In which case, she did leave and Kim replaced her. The year after that Jillilan came back and there were 3 trainers. The year after that, It was just Jillian and Bob.

  26. And now I see that it's an old article. Ignore me 🙂

  27. MisQ- that is an article from 2006…

  28. Nevermind…old article. Pays to read the whole thing.

  29. I caught the date as soon as I went to the article.

  30. out of curiousity, does anyone know how many people get to the background info/video/bio stage?

  31. 174.

  32. Ok guys I never said I was on the ranch if I get a V.I.P I just want to get one. lol I am only trying to get the email addresses to try and get one. I am a goal oreanated person. I take each step as it is persented to me. I am going to L.A no matter if I get one or not. If I have to sit there all day well then I will. I am not real thrilled about a big city but I am willing. Sorry if I sould frustrated I am just trying to get ready to go.

  33. Just kidding.

Do you really think someone is going to know that? I think it will depend on how many people apply and what the CD's see. I doubt there is a certain number.

  34. Contact me at blccvip@gmail.com. I think I might be able to help a couple people get a pass. I will see what I can do.

  35. simplyme…did you see that m3sons and I have given you email addresses to help you. but if you like you can take the long way around. i'm just trying to pay it forward, i could care less who you are, honestly, its up to you,
    short cut…………………………………………………….long way
    hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

  36. Lordy this board is quiet tonight!

    🙂

  37. Sorry…I had to wait for my heart to calm down from that initial scare. There's no other trainer that would work for me like Jillian…she wouldn't take my bs and would just push me harder. Bob's never really inspired me. Then, of course, there's the unknown…the new trainers.

"174." LOL. You made me chuckle. I liked that arbitrary number. But let's do a guesstimate just from the CCs alone. If CCs start at, what, 8AM to 5PM. Say an hour for lunch in between. So, what, 9 a day for four days? In that mix are personal trainers so I'll subtract one person per day.
Soooo… 8CB x 4days x 4cities x 3 weeks (so far– not counting tapes or LA/SD CCs). Approx 384 people so far? Mind you that number is faulty because that last day of CBs is not a full day b/c that's also a travel day. Now the real question is how many of those CBs make it to the next step, the bio/bg check?

BTW: My prayers go out to Alabamans and Germans dealing with the aftermath of senseless mass shootings.

  38. SIMPLYME…….A few of us have tried to help you out. Have you tried going back to page 1 of this blog? Go there and you will also find some email address. I just don't know them off hand.

NOTGIVINGUPHOPE……..OUTTTTTTTTTTTT so I can work on my video. I want it done and sent out by Friday or Saturday.

Speaking of sending out…….What type of envelope did you mail your application in?

  39. Hey… I will check back shortly to answer one last set of questions before the last casting call, and then I probably will not post anymore after that (until season 9 casting begins).

San Diego: Holland, Tad and myself.

Last chance to get your questions answered….

Oh, and a lot of the questions that are being posted now, I or Holland had already answered.

Lastly, there are plenty of call back interviews in each city. Remember there are over 1,000 auditioning in each city, and only a handful of people posting on here. So, just because someone on this forum was not called back does not mean we didn't call back a lot of people.

I will try to check back in an hour, and answer the last remaining questions to help.

    — DJ

  40. notgivinguphope-i sent mine in a dvd case and in a bubble envelope

  41. DJ— Please advise me on what to do ! my story is I had a cc then I had a one on one it went extremely well and the cd said that they would be pitching me .However after reading this blog i see people are doing bios should i send in a video to the same cd's or just send it in?

  42. hey DJ…

    my question is:

If we are selected as a finalist, when should we hear back by? Or…i guess at what point should we know that we're not in the running anymore?

sorry if you've already answered this. i'll scroll up and read it all again. just wanted to get the question written in time in case you hadnt answered it yet. 🙂
thanks for all of your patience with the lot of us. I know your time is very appreciated.

    thanks!

  43. Skittles….thanks. I don't think mine will be a dvd though. I can't get the camcorder to upload to my computer (like I wanted to). So, I can't do it the way I originally wanted. Therefore I'm onto plan B (recording things differently than I wanted to). I'll also be sending in a minidv instead of a dvd.

  44. Hi Dj, thanks for checking in with us. Have you guys started pitching the contestants yet or will that begin after the cc this weekend? I'm also curious to know if the cd that gave us our one on one interview are the ones that view the videos that we sent in and make the tape for the producers to watch. If so you guys have a very demanding job! Thank you for your time!

  45. notgivinguphope- well however you send it, i'd use a bubble envelope (if it will fit in one) to keep it protected. Also, I sent mine FedEx so I could track it to make sure it got there. 🙂 Hope everything works out!

  46. DJ – what is the interview/call back process for people who send in a video that cannot make it to a casting call or after the casting call dates are done. (Send in tapes before the 31st deadline.) Will they be doing another round of casting for season 9?

  47. Sup DJ,

About how many ppl do you guys normally move on to the next phase after the one on one. Say they call back 30 or so from one city, how many do you guys pick to pitch? And yea, when should we know if we're out of the running, or should I say, hopefully when will we hear if we are moving onto a semi-finalist/finalist phase, if we have already moved on to the next step?

  48. Thanks DJ for dropping in. As you know it's almost drumroll time so the questions are really starting to pour in. So here's mine:

    1) Is there any truth to season 8 and 9 being taped simultaneously? This was thrown out there by a CD at open call.

    2) Can you tell us anything about what the deal is with the trainer casting? Why?

    3) What's the approx cut-off date for making it to sequester?

    4) Can you also share approx when pitching will start?

    5) You do know it's really nice of you to visit us and answer our questions? You do know it's appreciated, right?

If I think of more before you pass through the board again, I'll post them.

  49. DJ, you rock!

Do you by any chance have the callback tally for the last round of casting calls? Are you allowed to tell us?

  50. notgivinguphope, make sure you have whatever service you're using stamp it as fragile. Otherwise it'll be tossed around like every other parcel and the tape could break. The bubble wrap is a good idea too. I used USPS and I had no problems. 2-3 day delivery is $4.95 plus like $0.50 for delivery confirmation. Overnight is $17.95. No delivery confirmation needed.
