Biggest Loser casting tips (season 10)

Casting has begun for season TEN of Biggest Loser. Can you imagine?  Here are some links with some great casting advice, followed by some of my own advice based on my experience getting on to season three of Biggest Loser (still the best season in my opinion!!!):

  • NBC has posted casting information and the application here.  You can download the application for season ten here.
  • Pete Thomas, the season 2 $100,000 winner has some of the best casting call advice out there, which you can find at his website, Winning Man.
  • Jen Kerns, a season three contestant like myself, and a doctor for the show for seasons four and five, has also put together some fantastic casting advice that you can read here.
  • Holland, a casting director for Biggest Loser sent me a bunch of great advice on how to be casted, you can find it here.  She updated them October, 2009.
  • I’ve been posting these casting tips for the last few seasons and they always seem to end up with thousands of comments; just about every season has contestants that were hanging out on here, reading and giving each other thoughts and advice.  You can find the most reason one here.
  • If you’re dealing with disappointment about not being cast, then check out my post on Biggest Loser casting disappointment.

One of the questions I hear a lot is about money … how do contestants afford to be away from home and work for months at a time? I don’t know what it is now, but when I was a contestant there was a $500 a week stipend for cast members on the ranch. When you received the check you could cash it and spend it, send it home, save it, whatever. All airplane tickets, hotel accommodations, etc., for the contestants and potential cast members are taken care of by NBC, and during the casting process it self there was a $50 per diem to cover food costs.

Another question is timing; typically a season lasts for about 8-9 months. About four of this is spent in filming; if you last all the way until the final three or four, you could be away from home for as much as four months or so. Once the ranch filming wraps and the last few contestants are sent home, however, there is still another four or five months that all the contestants have to continue losing weight until the finale. In addition, potential cast members are flown out to California a couple weeks before filming begins for the final round of casting, medical checkups, psychological evals, etc. NBC brings out more people than what they need and the cast is not finalized until filming literally begins. People have been cut at the last minute and replacements flown in with hardly any time to spare. Nothing is in stone until it’s on camera!

When will you hear from Biggest Loser about your video? There is no way of knowing. I heard back a few weeks after I sent it in, but even after that it’s a big waiting game. If you get a phone number or email from a casting direction, definitely drop them a line/call every couple weeks to find out if you’re still in the running or what’s going on. Schedules and plans change almost every day, so it’s easy to get lost in the shuffle. If you don’t hear back within a month I would think your video didn’t make the cut. That doesn’t mean you can’t send in another or visit a casting call – it’s just up to you!

Finally, here’s my video application tips! This is by no means a recipe for success; it’s based on my video application and the conversations I had with casting directors out in LA in between things. I was pretty curious about the whole process so I was pumping them for info even after filming began. I’m such a nerd!

  • They’ve usually decided if they’re interested in you within the first 30-60 seconds of your video, so front load it with your best stuff. Make it interesting! Start off with something funny or exciting!
  • Keep in mind, if you’re going to be cast, your video is going to be watched hundreds of times by producers, executives, casting directors, etc. If it bores you or your friends the second or third time watching it … put some more time into it!
  • Special effects? Don’t bother! We’ve all got video editing software with all sorts of bells and whistles on our home computers, but fancy transitions are not going to sell you to people who do video editing for a living. In fact, it can distract from who you are. I’m a video editing nerd and I didn’t use any special effects other than putting my name and contact info on as a subtitle at the beginning.
  • Don’t bother talking about why you need to lose weight. When I first started filming my audition video I started describing all of my health reasons for losing weight – but when I was watching it back, I realized … they don’t need to hear it! One look at me was all they needed to know I needed to lose weight! Show them why you need to lose it; I said I needed to lose weight for my kids, and then I followed it with a minute or two of the best footage I could find of me with wrestling with my three boys. We probably filmed half an hour of that insanity and I grabbed the cutest, loudest, and funniest few moments for the audition video. Your physical need to lose weight is not nearly as interesting as who or what your losing the weight for.
  • Live loud! Reality TV is over the top, dramatic, and filled with loud personalities. They need to see that on your video! I wanted them to know that even though I was morbidly obese I was up to the challenge of the crazy competitions and workouts – so I threw on a bunch of clips from my different youth group activities; me getting slimed, snowtubing, playing paintball, screaming at events, being on stage, running around … you get the idea. Other contestants did things appropriate to their lives; Tim from Oregon had himself spinning out on his Harley, Tim from Delaware recruited his elementary school class to do things with him, Heather Hanson filmed herself running around in a sports bra all day doing her household chores and errands. The less talking and more action you can have, the better (in my opinion)!
  • If you have footage or photos of yourself thin, include those at some point on the video. If you can show them what your after will be, then do it!

Remember, enjoy the conversation here and know that I will never compromise your anonymity – not to NBC, 3Ball, Casting Directors or anyone. You can post anonymously, or you can leave your names and contact information … just remember that NBC likes to be the one announcing their cast for the show, so if you start identifying yourself publicly as a finalist, you’ll probably find yourself eliminated from the casting process. Be aware that casting directors do check in at my blog to see what people are saying, get a feel for what questions are going on out there, and sometimes to give us updates. Good luck to everyone … and let me know if you make the show! I get a kick out of hearing about the different contestants that have hung out on my blog before making the show! ;)

  1. I'm just guessing but since the 3 interview teams are still interviewing through tomorrow, I would assume CC pitching hasn't started yet, just a guess…..there are no cc's this weekend….so maybe next week they'll start that piece…..????

  2. Hey guys! I have not been on this site since this time last year. I've really enjoyed reading all of the posts. I've actually been through this process for season 6, 7, 9 and now 11. I've gotten all the way to the end each time, even being told when and what time I'm flying out….only to get a call a few days later saying the network changed their minds once again. I decided to swallow my pride and try out again for season 11 but I feel so much different this time around. I know how things work now and the best advice I can give is try not to get your hopes up too much until you actually get to LA and tell as little people as possible. I mean, you can even get to LA and have to come back home, but at least you get to meet the execs face to face and you have your hance to make an impression in person. It's so much easier said than done to not get your hopes up, but it is the biggest let down to be told you haven't made the show, so if you try to keep your expectations to a minimum…you won't be as upset. Trying out again brings back soo many emotions that I thought were over, but I feel like I have nothing to lose by trying again (except weight of course hehe). I have no idea if 3Ball is even thinking of pitching me and my partner again, but hopefully we'll see what happends. My call back interview went really well and I've sent in all of the requested info, so I guess I just wait now. I have a great relationship with several of the people there at 3Ball–so I hope I hear something soon as to whether or not they will even pitch us to the network. It's so easy to think "why wouldn't they want me–I'm everything this show is about", but really—its all about a puzzle to NBC and there are just certain folks they feel fit with others and thats how they make up their minds on the casts. Good luck to everyone who wants this and try to keep your heads up!

  4. Thanks for that Southern Bell, I try to keep it real by doing the math, somewhere I read they give 30 call backs per city(don't even know if that's true but that's how I'm doing the math. So that makes me one of 390 to get an interview and 40-50 people(I'm still going on what I've heard) make it to the ranch so thats a 1 in 8 shot, then after that you have a 1 in 4 shot of making it on the show, still not good odds……..I can still hope though-and not talking about it is hard……hard…..hard……because I am sooooo excited about the possibilities…..I've tried out 3 times and this was my first call back……

  5. I think the math is wrong there. So lets say they interviewed 390 people and only 40 get moved on. If you are chosen then you had a 1 out of 351 chance of making it, not 1 out of 8. I think this is true because it is not a random choosing and you are competing against everyone. So you you have to be one they like the most out of 351 others.

I still think that is pretty good considering thousands applied. But I just think sometimes we trick ourselves into becoming overly optimistic. 1 of 8 sounds way better than 1 of 351.

On an even more positive note: I just finished my screenplay! Yay! I was up to 4:30 in the morning writing intensely, putting the ending on a on the writing project my friends and I began a month ago (truly 3 years ago if you count when the idea was conceived). I finished just in time to get selected for TBL. lol We're filming in October but, should I get chosen for TBL, I won't be there to see it unfold but, at least I'll be here for the beginning process.

It's a 40 minute short in case you were wondering how I finished in that small space of time. I sent it out to some honest critics before I wrote the ending and the reviews were very good.

I don't want to be a downer here, but you are not competing for all 16 or 20 spots on the ranch. It is like a giant puzzle, and you may only fit the profile of one or two of the spots that they have.

I am a teacher as well and with the start of the school year approaching I am trying to keep focused and busy with that. I sent in a video of my husband and I. So I will wait an see what happens. I always believe in my heart that I'm too good not to get better. So I will keep fighting my way through my obesity and infertility, hoping that I can make small changes to get me to the results I want.

Oh! And they may change their minds at any time about the profiles or story lines they are going with! Also, you don't know how many others have a similar profile or story line that have been called back. One season they may have 10 male former athletes in a certain age range, the next they may only have 2- I think you can drive yourself nuts with trying to figure it all out, just relax and keep busy 🙂 Easy to say… I know 🙂

I'll let you know if I get on. If I write it here, it will not only give me away, but it will also lead to a bunch more doing it. I'll need the edge again if I dont get on. I hope you can understand.

  12. Whats good and bad about this forum(Depending on the way you take it), It really lets you know the reality of the situation. While some are on here for advice on Casting Calls and Vids, a lot have made it past the Casting Call, 1st one on one interview, sent in the video, bgc, bio and are waiting to go to level 4(Flying out to LA). For me its good because we can trade ideas and also know how things are progressing, but bad because I thought my chances were way better before I read all the people on here and how close they are, and have been in past seasons.

I'm realizing now, I think getting on w/ my life is the best advice; act like you didnt make it, then it will be a surprise if you do. If you've truly done all you can do, its just a matter of whether or not you fit into the mold of this particular season. Its totally out of your hands and no reflection on you, your personality, or your particular situation. As the old addage goes, "It's nothing personal, just business"

This season, I am trying not to get as obsessed as I have in the past about BL. I am reading the posts, but trying hard not to post as much as in thepast. Gun-shy….=)lol!

I was so obsessed with BL! I wanted BL to save me! Many of you know that I got called for BL9 and told I was being considered for BL10 since I had no partner. I then had to still re-apply to BL 10. I got a call that I was being pitched and to make sure I could be at such and such weight and I thought I was going for sure. I gained the weight and then nothing.

Unless you read about it, there is no way of knowing that it all means very little until you are actally on the ranch and in front of the camera. I was so into it and thinking I was there- I was going to the ranch. I read this blog religiously and I lost a lot of sleep. This time, I am backing off. If I go, I go. If not, I had better do something to get my life back. It seems impossible to lose the weight we need to, but I am taking it a pound at a time. At least I am home with my family.

I come here and read a lot and it is still fun, but I don't post as much so I will not invest as much of myself into this whole thing. I keep hearing that song that has the lines, "It's your life, whatch gonna do?…" and there is one line that talks about waiting for someone else to fix you up…That is me. I need to change…a lot on the inside…a lot on the outside….

  23. It's Your Life – Lyrics

    Artist: Francesca Battistelli

    This is the moment

    It’s on the line

    Which way you gonna fall?

    In the middle between

    Wrong and right

    But you know after all

    (Chorus)

    It’s your life

    What you gonna do?

    The world is watching you

Every day the choices you make

Say what you are and who

    Your heart beats for

    It’s an open door

    It’s your life

Are you who you always said you would be?

With a sinking feeling in your chest

*****Always waiting for someone else to fix you

Tell me when did you forget

    (Chorus)

To live the way that you believe

    This is your opportunity

To let your life be one that lights the way

    (Chorus)

One part of me tells me "They called you, they wouldn't of called you if you are not what they have in mind for the show". The other part tells me " They call Hundreds and hundreds back and get all the info they can to expand their options on what they want". You definitely don't want to give them a break from your face. Both of you, if you have even an inkling of trying again, should go ahead and give your all in applying. Why? Because you might regret not applying more than you did applying in the first place.

I felt the same way for season 9. I half a$$ed an application/tape on the last day of submission and knew I wouldn't be called. Season 10, I submitted way too much information that they didn't have to contact me at all so I have no idea if I was even in the running up to a certain point– I redid everything I did for season 8 – I had a blank copy of the background check– filled that out, sent it in, sent in answers to the list of questions, redid my bio, gave them TONS of pictures, made a 20 minute video, and, of course, filled out the application. I obsessed over the YouTube views, checking several times a day to see if there was any view from California. There was nothing they needed to contact and ask me for and I felt that was my big mistake.

So this time, I just sent in the app and tape, which I pared down to 10 minutes so that it would fit on just one link, and forgot about it until they contacted me.

knowing :@Big Fat Guy Level four is not LA. LA is way at the end. There are still a ton of cuts before LA. More info will be requested

With all due respect Knowing, the CD's told me there were 5 levels.

    1. Casting Call

    2. Call Back Interview

    3. DVD, Bio, BGC and Being Pitched

    4. Flown out to LA

    5. Excepted Onto Show

Of course each one of these may have many extra items needed and subsets; but I wouldnt say its a level. And the last step(From what I read so far) is when the cameras actually start rolling. I've read alot about others having the carpet pulled out from under their feet even after being told theyre on. As far as requesting all that extra info, I think its just part of the Being Pitched Level.

BTW, since begining this process last month, I have gain 15-20lbs. Not a lot on my frame, but enough to put me at the highest I've ever been. I'm having problems with my back and other physical things that are definetly weight related.

I think I'm gonna lose the 15-20 lbs for now, then put it back on if I get called up. In the past, I have gained 28lbs in 2 weeks, without even trying. I can do the same again. But what I'm at now is seriously getting bad and I can feel it.

I joke around with my family, but I know deep down its not a joke. Anyone else have this problem?

After my interview, I really thought it was a done deal and just a matter of time and have been eating what ever I want. I had no idea it was such a roller coaster. Now after reading all this, I see its still a longshot to get on and if I don't, all I'll be left with is a bigger belly than when I started.

I can only urge caution for any of you experiencing this too.

  34. I really think its all part of the "Being Pitched" step. You didnt mention what the email was asking for, but sounds like they wanted some more info. I dont think I'm gonna count everytime they send me an email as a "Step" per se, but it does indicate theyre still interested, which is all we can ask for at this point.

and "The waiting is the hardest part"….as the old Tom Petty song goes

From all I read Justwaitin, next is Step 4, going to LA. But you really cant count that step as being reached until you land in LA. I have read some accounts where the potential contestant is told they are flying them, only to be told 3 days before the flight they are not.
