Biggest Loser is well into casting for season 16! The latest information will be posted on the Biggest Loser casting website. Basically, this post is a collection of tips I’ve written based on my experience making the cast of season three, as well as some links to casting advice I don’t think you should miss:
- NBC has posted casting information and the application here. They have all the casting news and information on a special blog just for Biggest Loser casting, which you can find here.
- Pete Thomas, the season 2 $100,000 winner has some of the best casting call advice out there, which you can find at his website, Lose It Fast, Lose It Forever.
- Holland, a casting director for Biggest Loser sent me a bunch of great advice on how to be casted, you can find it here. She updated them October, 2009.
- I’ve been posting these casting tips for the last few seasons and they always seem to end up with thousands of comments; just about every season has contestants that were hanging out on here, reading and giving each other thoughts and advice. You can find the most recent one here.
- If you’re dealing with disappointment about not being cast, then check out my post on Biggest Loser casting disappointment.
One of the questions I hear a lot is about money … how do contestants afford to be away from home and work for months at a time? I don’t know what it is now, but when I was a contestant there was a $500 a week stipend for cast members on the ranch. When you received the check you could cash it and spend it, send it home, save it, whatever. All airplane tickets, hotel accommodations, etc., for the contestants and potential cast members are taken care of by NBC, and during the casting process it self there was a $50 per diem to cover food costs.
Another question is timing; typically a season lasts for about 8-9 months. About four of this is spent in filming; if you last all the way until the final three or four, you could be away from home for as much as four months or so. Once the ranch filming wraps and the last few contestants are sent home, however, there is still another four or five months that all the contestants have to continue losing weight until the finale. In addition, potential cast members are flown out to California a couple weeks before filming begins for the final round of casting, medical checkups, psychological evals, etc. NBC brings out more people than what they need and the cast is not finalized until filming literally begins. People have been cut at the last minute and replacements flown in with hardly any time to spare. Nothing is in stone until it’s on camera!
When will you hear from Biggest Loser about your video? There is no way of knowing. I heard back a few weeks after I sent it in, but even after that it’s a big waiting game. If you get a phone number or email from a casting direction, definitely drop them a line/call every couple weeks to find out if you’re still in the running or what’s going on. Schedules and plans change almost every day, so it’s easy to get lost in the shuffle. If you don’t hear back within a month I would think your video didn’t make the cut. That doesn’t mean you can’t send in another or visit a casting call – it’s just up to you!
Finally, here’s my video application tips! This is by no means a recipe for success; it’s based on my video application and the conversations I had with casting directors out in LA in between things. I was pretty curious about the whole process so I was pumping them for info even after filming began. I’m such a nerd!
-
They’ve usually decided if they’re interested in you within the first 30-60 seconds of your video, so front load it with your best stuff. Make it interesting! Start off with something funny or exciting!
-
Keep in mind, if you’re going to be cast, your video is going to be watched hundreds of times by producers, executives, casting directors, etc. If it bores you or your friends the second or third time watching it … put some more time into it!
-
Special effects? Don’t bother! We’ve all got video editing software with all sorts of bells and whistles on our home computers, but fancy transitions are not going to sell you to people who do video editing for a living. In fact, it can distract from who you are. I’m a video editing nerd and I didn’t use any special effects other than putting my name and contact info on as a subtitle at the beginning.
-
Don’t bother talking about why you need to lose weight. When I first started filming my audition video I started describing all of my health reasons for losing weight – but when I was watching it back, I realized … they don’t need to hear it! One look at me was all they needed to know I needed to lose weight! Show them why you need to lose it; I said I needed to lose weight for my kids, and then I followed it with a minute or two of the best footage I could find of me with wrestling with my three boys. We probably filmed half an hour of that insanity and I grabbed the cutest, loudest, and funniest few moments for the audition video. Your physical need to lose weight is not nearly as interesting as who or what your losing the weight for.
-
Live loud! Reality TV is over the top, dramatic, and filled with loud personalities. They need to see that on your video! I wanted them to know that even though I was morbidly obese I was up to the challenge of the crazy competitions and workouts – so I threw on a bunch of clips from my different youth group activities; me getting slimed, snowtubing, playing paintball, screaming at events, being on stage, running around … you get the idea. Other contestants did things appropriate to their lives; Tim from Oregon had himself spinning out on his Harley, Tim from Delaware recruited his elementary school class to do things with him, Heather Hanson filmed herself running around in a sports bra all day doing her household chores and errands. The less talking and more action you can have, the better (in my opinion)!
-
If you have footage or photos of yourself thin, include those at some point on the video. If you can show them what your after will be, then do it!
Remember, enjoy the conversation here and know that I will never compromise your anonymity – not to NBC, 3Ball, Casting Directors or anyone. You can post anonymously, or you can leave your names and contact information … just remember that NBC likes to be the one announcing their cast for the show, so if you start identifying yourself publicly as a finalist, you’ll probably find yourself eliminated from the casting process. Be aware that casting directors do check in at my blog to see what people are saying, get a feel for what questions are going on out there, and sometimes to give us updates. Good luck to everyone … and let me know if you make the show! I get a kick out of hearing about the different contestants that have hung out on my blog before making the show! ![]()

@ Curious… maybe they are!! It is still early in California!
Holland posted they are looking for personal trainers in Florida. Do you suppose it is for BL? Are they changing the format away from the ranch?!
I saw that too but I saw where she was posting that she was in florida with her family last week. I was thinking she was trying to find someone for a friend or family member. But u might be right!
Well, I also got to looking at her page, and she works on EWL and they were casting engaged couples a few months ago. Maybe it is for that?
I was just looking back at some of the conversation on season 15 and saw where people recieved emails about a week before final call backs requesting a physician clearance form to be filled out. I havent heard of anyone saying that they have had that requested this season. Has anyone else? This is my first time trying out so im not so familiar with the casting process in past seasons. Im obsessing just a little.. lol
@ curious- I havent heard anyone mention it yet this season, however, a lot of things seem different this time around.
I was told at my call back interview that if I didn’t hear anything back by June 1st then join a gym. Lol. That’s why I was shocked when I got email telling me I was eliminated earlier last week. @dgcasting posted looking for a gold medal water polo player and female golfer. Big girls but pretty. I think they getting pro athletes thus year
I start to wonder about the girls they are contacting. Do the girls feel like they should be on the show OR is it more HEY YOU ARE FAT AND ARE SUPER GOOD AT YOUR SPORT! JOIN US! I think it’s pretty rude for people they have already cut due to having “so many great people” but wait…..still trolling for professionals
@ fireside- WOW! I had no idea all that was happening. What is BLs obsession with athletes? Us average Joes don’t relate to that!
If you look at who tries out….. and who (primaily) is watching- wouldn’t that be your audience? Why try to convince someone who doesn’t want it when you have thousands that are ready, willing, and able!
And did they give up on Mothers?
@ BigBoy- seriously? A gold medal water polo and golfer? If you’re going to do sports, why those ones I wonder?
It does seem ridiculous to me to have to fill a spot simply because of the sport that person plays. I mean, what makes them right for the show otherwise? A regular person has to have a great personality, decent looks, and a great story. But if you play water polo…. you’re in!!! LOL.
I looked on DGcastings twitter and FB page and didn’t see anything about looking for a golfer or waterpolo player?
https://twitter.com/dgcastingtv/with_replies
OHHHHHHH….. they are looking for specific players. That is different than an “all call” for water polo and golfers.
Still. The fact that they are trying to contact them as of last Friday means something. Means they are still working on casting. Means I have less and less of a chance going in the direction they appear to be going 🙁
To go so far as to reach out to fat athletes means BL has jumped ship.
I agree with you Tank! So why the heck have casting calls and have people go through all that stuff, if they are just going to get pro athletes? What a waste of time! These pro athletes they are reaching out to, are over weight. You can see who they’ve messaged on Twitter. So frustrating!
I just don’t think they will draw the viewers the way real people do.
I’ve heard some “real” people like us where contacted to go to California.. Just hear say though. All the PRO’s and celebs never do good on the ranch they all get elimated early unless there team wins weight ins.
When were they contacted? How accurate do u think that is?
How reliable do you think the source is? They have to be close to making an announcement soon.
Maybe they will have a “team” of athletes and a “team” of regulars.
What I guess baffles me a little is that these athletes have training and nutrition at their fingertips. Why would they choose to go on a reality show to lose the weight?
For me, a large part of my desire is simply that I can’t afford to finance my weight loss. I need the support that comes from the ranch and can’t afford to create it here at home.
I am shocked that they haven’t made an announcement yet. I’m still holding out hope, but I would really just like to know one way or the other!
Taken from The Biggest Loser facebook page
“The journey continues Thursdays this fall.
SEASON PREMIERE
SEPTEMBER 11
THURSDAYS 8/7c”
Apparently they’ll be airing the season that supposedly still hasn’t begun filming. I wonder if they’ll be airing 2 seasons a year again.
Holland just tweeted that we should know all finalist by next week. Do you think that means that they haven’t contacted ppl yet?
@CURIOUS
“We” or “They” should know them?
Well….. considering they haven’t even viewed my video, I guess there is time (HA!) I say that sarcastically.
Holland said “we should know all bl16 finalist by next week” so I guess she means “they”, so maybe they haven’t contacted anyone yet?
I’m new at this.. Is it odd that they haven’t posted that they have notified the ppl that are going to LA? I thought for sure they would have posted this week. It kind of worries me that they are already posting when the show will air. Is this normal? Do y’all think they have already flown ppl out to LA?
@CURIOUS
YES, Everything about this is odd.
That being said, I do believe:
1. this would be the very 1st time they never posted when they finished watching ALL the audition videos, ALL the way thru (the FULL video)
2. they never posted when the majority of the CD’s had moved on to other projects / shows, leaving 1 or 2 of them to finish the process with the higher ups
3. they never posted when EVERYTHING was in the hands of the Producers and ALL the CD’s are gone
4. they’ve never posted when a season will begin airing, before they even began taping the season
@Curious- “finalists” are the people headed to California for finals week. I’ve never seen them notify us when they will know all finalists. I don’t know for sure, but I don’t think they typically notify finalists until they decide who they are bring out for casting week. Just my guess. And I don’t recall ever seeing a poster for the new season before they started filming!
Oh… but I will say this. I am not niave enough to believe that they notify us at the exact moment things happen. I would not be at all suprised to think that they are holding off the crowds with their declaration this evening.
Gah this is driving me nuts! I just hope by next week they don’t mean like friday. I hope it’s early in the week!
@CURIOUS
Usually it’s a Friday, but that means it will probably be a Monday or maybe a Tuesday (whereas NOTHING has been the usual).
Tomorrow is Friday. That would work for me. Ha! If not let’s hope they shoot for Monday or Tuesday! I just wish they would post something more detailed with where they are at. Nothing has even been posted on the bl FB or twitter page. The post today was only on Holland’s personal account.
I actually remember a season where the announcement came on a Tuesday. So I think it is possible, but typically it is end of the week. If they really have already started to contact finalists, then I am guessing it will be earlier in the week next week.
For me at this point the fat lady has sung. No hits on my video must mean they watched, it didn’t register and they didn’t like it. So frustrating!
It appears to me that they are still watching videos. I got a load from Israel that just last night. Hang on to hope!
…now to obsess….
I showed a load from Israel this morning at what would have been 4am California timeline _. I am assuming it must have been really late last night. Do you think if they are interested it will get loaded/ embedded again? Or do they call me today 🙂
can’t be a bad thing…
Biggest Loser Casting just announced the premier, and said all finalists will be NOTIFIED next week. She also said all videos submitted by the deadline were watched. (I wonder which deadline?and are they watching those submitted after the deadline, because they said they still wanted them 🙂 ) and that sometimes it doesn’t show up on the counter as viewed.
Maybe mine was the last video they watched! LOL. Can’t be a good thing. They wrere tired and over it! It was the middle of the night. They haven’t called for more info. Have to assume its over for me, too. But at least I know they saw it.
From Biggest Loser’s facebook page (1 hr ago)
“Premiere Date announced! All Finalists should be notified by next week! All videos submitted by the deadline were watched. Sometimes we download them before viewing them which causes the video to not show up as “viewed” on the counters. Have a healthy and happy summer! Good Luck Everyone!!!! Believe in yourself! It starts with YOU! Please don’t wait on us, start your journey today!! We LOVE to hear “at-home” success stories!”
I’m just venting a little. Sorry to dump my feelings on y’all….
Viewing my video so late in the game, and in fact in the wee hours of the night just makez me feel like I wasn’t really considered. It kind of feels like it was only loaded so they could say they were done watching. Hard pill to swallow when they called and asked me for a video, and I gave up so much time and energy on it. I was well passed the disappointment of no callback after the casting call- and moving on with my life- then they call and throw me back onto it- just to not really consider it.
Thanks for letting me vent. I know it is how things go in TV land.
@TANK
I feel so bad for you, especially because you were so led on.
I have just one thought and I’ve thought it before about the request you received for a video. Are you really sure the request really came from BL Casting and not from one of those scammers who have taken advantage of BL applicants in the past. I know the multiple times I’ve heard about these scammers trolling around us, it was early on in the process (like just after casting calls and around the callback timeframe).
Again, I feel really bad about how so many of the applicants are led on and set up for a huge letdown.
I hope you’ll be able to move on from this soon.
@ PI- You are so sweet! I’m positive it was a CD. I will also say, it was several weeks after the Casting Call…. Like I said, I got the call out of the blue. I was over the disappointment of not getting a callback. This will probably give me away if a CD reads this blog, but at this point I guess it doesn’t really matter! I have my doubts about a BL17, and I doubt I would apply anyway 🙂
I went to a casting call that was held at a BL Resort. When I got in line, of course people were coming around to promote the resort, and enter us for a drawing to win a free week. I was reluctant to sign up, because I was sure I would end up getting solicitation….. so I gave them my home phone (I save my cell number for the important stuff!). Had a wonderful time at the CC, felt confident at the table, connected with the CD, and moved on. Waited for the cell to ring, and when it didn’t I decided I just wasn’t what they were looking for. Fine. Move on. 2-3 weeks later I was in the middle of making dinner, helping with homework, texting my sister, kicking the neighbor kids out of the house and getting 2 of my 4 kids ready for their sports activities….. when the HOME phone rang. The caller ID said HULA POST. Almost didn’t answer. In fact, I believe a kid answered. When I got on the phone the guy said something about being from BL… and my mind went to the BL Resort (thinking they are going to try to sell me a week at the resort). He asked leading questions like “Did you have fun at the Casting Call” , and “You applied as a busy parent of athletes” (you know how solicitors do. trying to keep you on the phone) and I was only half listening because I was waiting for the solicitation and had soooooooo much going on around me. I was rude. I was short with him, and after he started talking about e-mailing me information on where to send a video I slowly came to realize he wasn’t from the resort, but in fact I was actually talking to a CD. At that point it started to dawn on me that I was probably blowing the opportunity of a lifetime. I never got that e-mail. I later found out that others got skype interviews after such phone calls. So, really, PI, I think my frustration needs to be with myself! But I made the video, sent it in, and felt hopeful. REALLY. My venting yesterday was probably un-called-for. I did it to myself. It is just hard because I wanted it so bad. And today I feel over it 🙂 Thanks so much for your support!
OH! I also know it was a real CD because I Private Messaged on facebook to the Biggest Loser Casting and they confirmed the phone call.
I just think he gave up on me after that phone call, and it was a total misunderstanding 🙂 I should have been real about my chances after that, but I wanted so badly to believe they were looking for me.
@ TANK- I feel for you. 🙁

Wardrobe fitting for BL16
What do you think that means? Do you think that they have already called people? They have to be flying ppl out soon!
I heard it through the grapevine that filming starts in July. So I would think that casting week would be (at the earliest) that last week in June. I would say it is very likely they have contacted people.
The casting director and associate casting director told me that they don’t do Skype interview anyone except for in extreme cases. If the person you talked to wasn’t mentioned on the original casting team, they may nit have been legit. All calls also come from an 818 area code from BL.
@Bigboy- Yes, it was an 818 number, and I was not asked for a skype interview. I was called the day before the deadline for video tapes. The call was confirmed by whoever manages the Biggest Loser Casting page on facebook, and I spoike with someone else who had the same experience. That person was given a skype interview.
The thing that baffles me the most is that I didn’t think I put my home phone number on my application. (but obviously I must have). I thought I only gave them my cell. That is a huge part of why I thought I was being solicited. We only give our home phone to doctors and solicitation.
