Biggest Loser casting tips (season 14)

Biggest Loser is getting ready to start casting for season 14!  Casting calls will be happening this summer and will be posted soon on the Biggest Loser casting website.  Basically, this post is a collection of tips I’ve written based on my experience making the cast of season three, as well as some links to casting advice I don’t think you should miss:

  • NBC has posted casting information and the application here.  They have all the casting news and information on a special blog just for Biggest Loser casting, which you can find here.
  • Pete Thomas, the season 2 $100,000 winner has some of the best casting call advice out there, which you can find at his website, Winning Man.
  • Holland, a casting director for Biggest Loser sent me a bunch of great advice on how to be casted, you can find it here.  She updated them October, 2009.
  • I’ve been posting these casting tips for the last few seasons and they always seem to end up with thousands of comments; just about every season has contestants that were hanging out on here, reading and giving each other thoughts and advice.  You can find the most recent one here.
  • If you’re dealing with disappointment about not being cast, then check out my post on Biggest Loser casting disappointment.

One of the questions I hear a lot is about money … how do contestants afford to be away from home and work for months at a time? I don’t know what it is now, but when I was a contestant there was a $500 a week stipend for cast members on the ranch. When you received the check you could cash it and spend it, send it home, save it, whatever. All airplane tickets, hotel accommodations, etc., for the contestants and potential cast members are taken care of by NBC, and during the casting process it self there was a $50 per diem to cover food costs.

Another question is timing; typically a season lasts for about 8-9 months. About four of this is spent in filming; if you last all the way until the final three or four, you could be away from home for as much as four months or so. Once the ranch filming wraps and the last few contestants are sent home, however, there is still another four or five months that all the contestants have to continue losing weight until the finale. In addition, potential cast members are flown out to California a couple weeks before filming begins for the final round of casting, medical checkups, psychological evals, etc. NBC brings out more people than what they need and the cast is not finalized until filming literally begins. People have been cut at the last minute and replacements flown in with hardly any time to spare. Nothing is in stone until it’s on camera!

When will you hear from Biggest Loser about your video? There is no way of knowing. I heard back a few weeks after I sent it in, but even after that it’s a big waiting game. If you get a phone number or email from a casting direction, definitely drop them a line/call every couple weeks to find out if you’re still in the running or what’s going on. Schedules and plans change almost every day, so it’s easy to get lost in the shuffle. If you don’t hear back within a month I would think your video didn’t make the cut. That doesn’t mean you can’t send in another or visit a casting call – it’s just up to you!

Finally, here’s my video application tips! This is by no means a recipe for success; it’s based on my video application and the conversations I had with casting directors out in LA in between things. I was pretty curious about the whole process so I was pumping them for info even after filming began. I’m such a nerd!

  • They’ve usually decided if they’re interested in you within the first 30-60 seconds of your video, so front load it with your best stuff. Make it interesting! Start off with something funny or exciting!
  • Keep in mind, if you’re going to be cast, your video is going to be watched hundreds of times by producers, executives, casting directors, etc. If it bores you or your friends the second or third time watching it … put some more time into it!
  • Special effects? Don’t bother! We’ve all got video editing software with all sorts of bells and whistles on our home computers, but fancy transitions are not going to sell you to people who do video editing for a living. In fact, it can distract from who you are. I’m a video editing nerd and I didn’t use any special effects other than putting my name and contact info on as a subtitle at the beginning.
  • Don’t bother talking about why you need to lose weight. When I first started filming my audition video I started describing all of my health reasons for losing weight – but when I was watching it back, I realized … they don’t need to hear it! One look at me was all they needed to know I needed to lose weight! Show them why you need to lose it; I said I needed to lose weight for my kids, and then I followed it with a minute or two of the best footage I could find of me with wrestling with my three boys. We probably filmed half an hour of that insanity and I grabbed the cutest, loudest, and funniest few moments for the audition video. Your physical need to lose weight is not nearly as interesting as who or what your losing the weight for.
  • Live loud! Reality TV is over the top, dramatic, and filled with loud personalities. They need to see that on your video! I wanted them to know that even though I was morbidly obese I was up to the challenge of the crazy competitions and workouts – so I threw on a bunch of clips from my different youth group activities; me getting slimed, snowtubing, playing paintball, screaming at events, being on stage, running around … you get the idea. Other contestants did things appropriate to their lives; Tim from Oregon had himself spinning out on his Harley, Tim from Delaware recruited his elementary school class to do things with him, Heather Hanson filmed herself running around in a sports bra all day doing her household chores and errands. The less talking and more action you can have, the better (in my opinion)!
  • If you have footage or photos of yourself thin, include those at some point on the video. If you can show them what your after will be, then do it!

Remember, enjoy the conversation here and know that I will never compromise your anonymity – not to NBC, 3Ball, Casting Directors or anyone. You can post anonymously, or you can leave your names and contact information … just remember that NBC likes to be the one announcing their cast for the show, so if you start identifying yourself publicly as a finalist, you’ll probably find yourself eliminated from the casting process. Be aware that casting directors do check in at my blog to see what people are saying, get a feel for what questions are going on out there, and sometimes to give us updates. Good luck to everyone … and let me know if you make the show! I get a kick out of hearing about the different contestants that have hung out on my blog before making the show! ;)

  1. @ BFG – I hear ya. I have nothing to confirm this but my theory is that this whole teenage thing has delayed things. I think that whatever they plan to do with them has delayed our process which in my head makes sense. I mean they probably want contestants that can compliment the teens in whatever direction they’ve decided to go. I’m guessing things are a couple days to a week behind. Again, I know nothing just my theory. And, yes, the people who have been told they would’ve known something by now is true. If I recall no one that got any of the AM emails has been said they’re out correct? Maybe I’m just an eternal optimist – guess we shall see. Oh….and in my head that makes sense about some of the CD’s being on vaca…maybe a select few are narrowing down the teens and when that’s done (deadline was 15th I think) they’ll hit the floor running? Thoughts?

  2. I don’t know. Since the Teen thing has to be at home, has nothing to do with the Ranch or prizes offered, and thus has a lot more time to set up, I don’t think it would run interference on the regular process. It seems to me as an extra tie in to the regular show. But then again, why no FN?

  3. @BFG i agree : ( I think that the level uppers need to come forward there are clearly 60 of you guys out there 2 that have leveld up so let’s hear it!
I second these statements ” Someone that has leveled up needs to let us know what they leveled up to. Ya dont even need to be specific and youre obviously not the only one, so annonymity is safe. Just let us know if youre being told youre a Finalist, or just another level in the process”

@ vet lurker: I also agree about the kiddos delaying the process…. I havens feeling there going with mother daghter or something along those lines or the adults that can mentor these kids too… I don’t fall into either of those categories … Shame because they wasted so much time with all of us…..

Please let us know level uppers 🙂 Or corn dawg for this matter

  4. I’m still giggling cuz no one believed me that there would be more casting this season.

Anyhoo, I snailed my video to Ivar, was told to send it directly to BN attention and I seriously doubt it was watched.

Like many of you I will try to do this on my own. If I qualify I will retry. If not than woot.

  5. Why the “Level Uppers” havent said anything only leads to more speculation. I do know the letters now openly forbid any discussion of the contents on emails, blogs, or anything online. The language itself is usually pretty strong; maybe this time it was even stronger? I don’t know. Still, if they’re Finalists, there’s 50-60 of them, and if its just another level up; there’s still 100-200, at least. The silience really doesnt make any sense, so I’m thinking its gotta be the language used.

  6. I agree @BFG

    where is corndawgie dawg?

I wonder if they would go as far as screwing us that bad, with, as you suggested, mother daughter teams or something like that, after they wasted so much of our time and them heavily advertising, IN ADVANCE (I might say for the 1st time ever), they were looking for INDIVIDUALS).

I could certainly understand the mentoring A STRANGER idea (I believe I made that suggestion earlier on these pages) – I suggested matching contestants up with a local school, for example.

That would be really awful if they returned to their usual teams, screwing all of us singles who put so much time and energy into applying.

    WHY, Ivar?

“MAIL YOUR APPLICATION, PHOTO & VIDEO TO:
    The Biggest Loser Casting
    P.O. Box 2210
    Los Angeles, CA 90078”

Oh, that may have been a direct route to BN, vs. getting trapped in with all us nobodys (just hoping for a chance).

@PI- Yeah, I’m up at 5 and leave for crossfit around 5:30. Then I’m back around 7:30. Today I upped my strict press by almost 10 lbs, upped my kettle bells and jumped rope!! It was a good workout…. I pretended I was at the ranch.

And I assumed the same thing when I read Corndawgs post. Very frustrating if it is true. But it may also be a clue to the future of TBL.

    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Awesome job. That is cool that you pushed yourself that much more. Hopefully, you will keep pushing on and will not need the ranch when the next season of casting comes around (if it ever does).

    Keep moving…

“it may also be a clue to the future of TBL” OR THE LACK OF…A FUTURE!

I was told to send it there

    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

I thought that may be the case.

I’m just glad it wasn’t an accident.

  12. Accident? Lol what do you mean?

  13. What did corn doggie dog say that got everyone in a tizzy? My iPhone makes this site hard to navigate 🙁

  14. I find it very unlikely that an intern is on here posting insider info … especially given that the casting people/bosses check in from time to time and wouldn’t be happy about it. I ran an IP search and the location that came up was no where near California.

Unless you hear it from the casting team, and they won’t beat around the bush about their identity, then don’t believe any of it. 🙂

    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Only that you didn’t send it to the wrong address.

  17. I’ve been told each year to send it there…might as well just keep sending it in there.

  18. “Ivar ave” is Shine America…Thats where all the CD’s work (even if they are freelance)….AM, BN, DJ, Barb, Vanessa, Ian, Ashley, Jen Rosen, Kristen, ETC the BL mail goes to a P.O. Box in town so people do not just show up and hand deliver it … but once you get to the level up at get asked to send Bio/BGC then they just ask you to send your video to them directly

  19. WOO! Facebook drama! Have ya’ll read the comments on the casting facebook page this morning???? Judgment is a-flyin’!

  20. @bigmamalove – no fill us in

  21. It’s a much better read! 🙂 Go check it out!

  22. @Bigmamlove

Maybe I wasnt looking in the right place, but I didn see anything too dramatic or outrageous…

  23. BFG, the post with 28 comments on it? That’s the one I was referring to 🙂

  24. @bigmamalove
can’t look right now because I’m at work. What was the drama about? People not hearing back from CDs, the fact that they’re casting for teens??

  25. It sounds to me like the age old argument…”You don’t need TBL, you can do it on your own!” said by either the skinny people, Obese people who just lost a little weight and havent hit their “Wall” yet(Usually around 10%), or ticked off Obese people who are “Trying” to self motivate after realizin they are not getting “The Call”.

They may be right, but it is obviously not reality. If it was, they’d all be skinny now. None of them just woke up this morning, passed by a mirror and said”Wholly shit! I weigh 500lbs! When did that happen!” Its been a lifelong struggle and TBL is more or less an intervention and synonymous with being sent to rehab….

  26. Some dude publicly called out everyone who is still waiting for the show before they start their weight loss efforts. He called them weak. A girl called HIM out on what he said, and there are now 30 comments worth of back and forths. Sounds like everyone’s getting uptight.

  27. @BFG, I think someone posted what you just said about TBL being an intervention. I looked further back into the original poster’s older wall posts, and it most definitely sounds what you said…angry that he didn’t get a call back.

  28. someone just posted on blcasting the they received email that they are done with casting

  29. huh my vimeo was just watched this weekend! Weird!

  30. perhaps said person sent an email to the orginal place to send casting submissions and they email was referring to subissions no longer being accepted…Or maybe they are done. Wont know for sure until a CD posts.

  32. @justsayin- congrats! is that your first view?

@Mister- I saw that, too…. it is hard to imagine they would “leak” that kind of information without an announcement. What do y’all think?

  33. I was thinking the same thing! @ just sayin

  34. my new number one reason I want to be on BL14..smaller thumbs = less typos when posting from mobile device… 😛

  35. Like I’ve said a number of times, if the FM has not been sent, they are not done yet. In the past, the FN was sent out just a few hours after casting was completed. Unless they have gone waaaaaay off the reservation this Season, this is still the case. I’m not trying to instill any hope in anyone, the odds are overwhelmingly stacked against you, but the “Fat Lady” hasnt sung yet…

  36. * Meant to say FN……

    She’s blaring in my ear!

It almost seems like they are sending personally addressed blanket emails so that may be the reason for the delay. I don’t know. In either case, it is official.

  42. Well, I emailed them to see if finalist had been chose. I had made it up through the AM email and hadnt heard anything for a few weeks. They said all finalist have been called and notified. Bummed.
